I've been throwing around the idea of holding a golf tournament that involves disc and ball golf. This would most likely be a 1 day event. At first I was thinking make it a 2 day tourney by having 2 rounds of disc played on a saturday and 1 round of ball golf on Sunday.

After talking with some local golfers last weekend (which is a complete blurr due to excessive cold beers friday and saturday night) I got some pretty good interest and some good input.

This is roughly how I am seeing it work:

Summer Time
Saturday
2 rounds of golf
1st round at Haikey Creek
2nd round at Lit'l Links Golf Course --
-18hole par 3 course (if you have played lafortune par 3 than this one is very similiar)
-1 mile from Haikey
-Rentals available
-Nice driving range

Morning round could be at either course and I'm thinking total entry would be around $15 not including CTP for both courses.

I'm thinking if just 10 people signed up to play it would be a total success, atleast for the first ever ball/disc event. It's just an idea at this point but I'm seriously considering doing it for those who like to throw AND swing. :D

What format are you thinking about? All that is mentioned is CTP.

m_conners
Jan 02 2004, 08:52 PM
lms: First time to do this so i'm keeping it as simple as possible.

I'm thinking of having players rate themselves by skill, as an A or B golfer. We have a few months before this happens so nothing is set in stone.

A rated golfer: Shooting even or better at Haikey Creek
-AND- have played atleast 10 rounds of golf in your life (this is obviously flexible)

B rated golfer: Shooting consistently over par at Haikey -AND- played only a few rounds of golf in your life.

We will take the total scores from both rounds, the low total determines the winner. This is a chance for disc golfers who have never played ball golf to see the beauty of sticking a 150 yard shot right next to the pin. There are a lot of people in our sport who have never played a round of ball golf and they can experience it with people they know.

Basically if you shoot pretty good ball golf and are an average disc golfer you can WIN this tournament. I know a guy who is a novice disc golfer but has the ability to shoot around par at a par 3 ball golf course, he could win this event.

I will put this event on even if it's just 4 competing. I know enough guys who play both to have atleast 5 players right now. Most likely there will only be one division, anybody who does not play "ball" golf most likely would not be interested anyway.

I am in. I typically shoot a 96 from the white tees at Sapulpa. So, I do not think I would have much of a chance at winning this thing but I think it would be a blast and fitting it in all in one day would be great.

What about the A- or B+ folks. Consistently over par at DG, but single digit handicap. Or the one always in the red at DG, but never picked up a golf club before.

Official format is being finalized...will be posted thereafter.

Texas players are welcome to come up to T-Town and play. The ball course we are playing is a par 3 course. The longest hole is about 175 yards. Some of the greens slope a whole lot. Maybe next year we can play McClure and Mohawk or something??

m_conners
Jan 16 2004, 04:37 PM
April 10th is the date this tourney happens.

The disc course we are playing is Haikey Creek, you can find info on this course through the pdga.com course directory.

Haikey Creek and Lit'l Links courses are 1 mile apart.

We will meet at Haikey in the morning around 930, and tee off by 10am. Take lunch break (i might provide lunch not sure yet). Players can hit the golf range if they want and we will start the next round to determine a winner. Ball Golf round will tee off at 1pm or before.

m_conners
Jan 16 2004, 05:05 PM
Yes, overall score will determine the winner.

There will be 2 divisions, A & B. I still have some wrinkles to iron out as far as what type of player should fall under the A pool or B pool.

Most likely this is how it's going to happen. If you play Open or Advanced you will play in the A pool. If you play Novice or Amateur you play in B pool. There will be an A pool winner, a B pool winner and an overall winner. If a novice player breaks out a LOW ball golf score than he could potentially win the overall.

I almost want to have just one division. We'll see

m_conners
Jan 16 2004, 05:09 PM
DP: Mulligans are a good idea, whatever additional $$$ is made from this tournament will be donated to the TDSA, maybe we can replace some stolen baskets??

Watch out for Carl - I know for a fact that he was on the Mannford High golf team.

Also, I hear that Steve Neagle is a stud golfer.

My stepdad will make some people sweat on the golf course only if he can stay close to everyone at Haikey.

As for myself you might as well just mark me down for a 72 at Lil' Links and a 49 at Haikey. I rarely call my scores but there it is a +13 overall. Not a great score but we will just have to see how it plays.

m_conners
Mar 09 2004, 10:23 PM
Carl, Neagle, Jose's stepdad??? This is what I like to see! Disc golfers with ball golf skills!

I hope to shoot around +10 overall. Even par at Haikey with bogeys and pars scattered on the card at Lit'l Links. I plan on buying enough mulligans to use atleast one on every other hole at the ball golf course. I know there are some ball golfers out there in the Tulsa disc golf community. If you like both versions of golf than you will enjoy yourself at this tournament!

Former Tulsa golfer Justin Archambo has a good ball golf game. I've played ball golf with K-mac and he is probably the favorite to win in this one.

Any other ball golfers in town??

Mar 09 2004, 11:00 PM
It is golf so there for I can dig it. Beware of my spoon!

Mar 09 2004, 11:13 PM

And what will be the limit on those mulligans, 50cents a piece, some people could by a whole lot of them.

What's up Aleksy, there will be a limit on Mulligans i decided. I don't want us playing golf for 4 hours know what i'm sayin.

Players meeting at 945 Haikey Creek...I know everyone on this board has discs, bring you own clubs if you got em' otherwise you can rent them for $10 at the clubhouse (limited number of rentals)

This tournament will take place unless we get rained on so bad that the Lit'l Links Golf Club close the course.

My fingers are crossed for good weather.

Hey Wise, I hope you were hitting your irons well big fella.

Thanks for negotiating a great deal on green fees, $2 WOW.
That just left alot more for prizes.
You did a good job.
Sorry about the weather, nothing you could do about that.
Congrats to all who were brave enough to come out who either had never played or who had not played in quite a while, that would include myself.
Congrats to Kev. on a solid finish in ball golf, I was two up with four to play and just ran out of gas.
Carts, Two somes, Tees #1 and #10 will be in effect next time!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Aaron for helping with cards before the first round
Thank you Julie for helping with mulligans and cards for the second round
Thank you Michael Barr for assisting me with payouts.

And thanks to everyone who came out to play

And for those who missed it...Bud Johnson walked up to the hole #1 tee box, examined the hole and proceeded to stick an orange ball just behind the pin...IT WAS AWESOME!

Thanks to Mike Conners for putting this event together - it was big fun. It got a little cold and sprinkled some but other than that it really just looked worse than it really was. Thanks again for getting me off early - I would have been able to finish if we would not have gotten behind a slow 4-some that jumped on hole 10 in front of us. I did get 15 holes in. Jerry Stacey has some game on the golf course and that was the first time I have played with a cross-handed golfer in Howard. Wise was hanging in there real good also. Overall I had great cards both rounds and can't wait for the next one.

The "tentative" date is set for June 19th...I checked out the Oklahoma Disc Golf Calendar and saw no conflicts. I did check out the PDGA calendar and the Big Arms on the Brazo is that weekend in TX. Discraft is having a huge tournament that weekend also, so the B&G defending champ (K-Mac) might have to sit this one out.

Bring your partner doubles will be in effect. If you are looking for a partner email me, I can most likely find you a partner.

Oh I almost forgot, the 2nd Quarter Baskets and Greens will take place in SAND SPRINGS, OK...Ray Brown Park (The Bunker) was recently designed by Tulsa's own Jose Mendoza and it will serve as our Disc Golf course, he has 3 tee boxes set-up on all 9 holes, that gives us 27 playable holes! I'm considering playing all 27. There are some really cool short tees out there.

The ball golf round will be at Sand Springs Public Course, better known as "Goat Hill". I am doing my best to work out the most reasonable entry fee.

June 19th should be good to go...expect a flyer at local minis next week.
