Howdy from the Hill Country. I wanted to start a new thread that deals specifically with upcoming events and news about the disc golf course at Galloway-Hammond Recreation Center in Burnet, TX., as the old one was basically to announce its progress and is poorly titled for those who don't know what the thread's about.
On that note, I'd like to announce that the 1st competitive event for our lovely little course is now scheduled. Saturday, January 17th, HCF will be hosting a one-day kick off tournament to welcome folks to our new course, called the HCF Winter Warm-Up.
Hopefully, our new tee signs will be in by then, and with a little luck, a couple of creek crossings will be cleared and have at least temporary bridges in place as well.
We will play 2 rounds of 18 holes, using the 9 hole layout and playing it twice each round. I'm working on lunch for the players and perhaps some activities at the Rec Center as well. Keep an eye on this thread for those updates.
With the fact that we're limited on holes combined with the fact that the current 9 hole design is too small to allow ghost cards, we're forced to limit the field to 45 players.
Along those lines, we'll also have to impose some divisional size restrictions and will only offer 3 divisions: Open ($30 entry - 20 players), Advanced and Intermediate ($20 entry, total of 25 players combined). There will also be a $5 ace pot, which I can almost guarantee to fall. Five of our 9 holes are aceable and #3 has already been hit. All aces will split the pot. In the event that there are no aces (unlikely) we'll throw off and split it between the 3 closest in a CTP.
Not sure about added money for Pros at this time, but you never know.
As for signups, with the limited field size, I doubt we'll have spots available on the morning of. Here's what I'm planning. You may, starting today, send a money order or a check (payable to Mark Atwood) to secure your spot to, 305 W. 4th St., Burnet, TX. 78611. Mail-in entries must be postmarked no later than 1-10-04. Also, I'll have a current list of entries and available spots with me at our monthly 1st Sunday Lago Vista HCF Mini on 1-4-04. If you'd like to sign up with me at the mini, I'll have a list of what's available and entry forms. Spots in the event will be awarded in the order in which they are received and any mail in entries that come in late, should the event fill before the dealine, as I expect it will, of course will be refunded with our apologies. (Keep in mind that we're already short one Am spot since I an't missing this my own self. :) )
If you have any questions that you don't see the answers to here, feel free to call the HCF Hotline at 830-385-9682.
I look forward to having you all over at my place, for a change. Plenty of floor space, couch space and sleeper sofa space will be available if a few of you want to hang at Casa de Martyr for some cards, dvd watching or adult beverage consumption on Friday night. :)
Don't forget that Gimp's Gulf Coast Series Live Oak event is the following day. Barring a miraculous appearance of my beloved Cowboys in the NFC Conference Championship game, I'll be waking up that morning and driving to Live Oak to play. The sleeping quarters will also be available to those planning to do the same, on a first call, first served basis. :)

Yes I will be there. Just toying with you Mark, I can't take the usual double digits wins all the time. The PPS has to take a break sometimes. Do I feel a bet on your home course?
Wow that means I will be playing 2 days in a row. Burnet Saturday and Live Oak Sunday. Bring the crutches.
if you ever beat me by double digits on THIS course, i'll retire from DG!

18 Holes, 10 stroke win :) Just a matter of time. PPS will be there to haunt you. I couldn't have you retire, all the Rec players in Texas would lynch me.
Sounds great but how much time would it take to get to Burnett from Temple?
for that to happen, you're pretty much gonna have to shoot a -10 or better. you forget, i've seen you play this course before, remember? :)
you're arm only helps you on one hole and even that one isn't gonna be a birdie for you most of the time. the only other hole where your d might give you an advantge is the same hole where you can't seem to stay outta the trees. ha!
how 'bout next time you come out here, we go 18, no strokes for me, and if you beat me by 10 or more, I'll pay your entry to the Winter Warm-Up? And, if you beat me by 3 or less (or not at all), you pay mine? put your money where your discs are.
btw, a local fished some of your discs out of the creek. you know, that thing with the water in it where you're not supposed to throw?
SMACK!
1st of all its burnet, with one t. :)
i think the trip from here to temple usually takes me about an hour or an hour 15 minutes, something like that. i know it takes me about an hour and 45 mintues to get to whacko and thats about half an hour further north, right?
Mark, count one more RR member in as well! Looking forward to seeing the course, as I am from Llano. Good luck to the bulldogs tonight in Dallas, will be rootin for them.

Just played 9 holes against Mark. I won by 4 shots. You do the math. Getting close to a free entry for me.
great B, love to have you out. i'm like a proud daddy with all these folks coming out to see our little course. of course, that means be gentle in your criticism or i may cry. :)
look, you darn foreigner, you know **** good and well that if i'd have been playing with anything on the line i would've taken the easy 3 on # 9, instead of trying for the birdie and getting wet. -2 and bogey free through 8 holes and ending with a freakin +1. disgusting! argh!
nice shot on #4 by the way. ha ha ha!
SMACK!
anyone come out this weekend to get a look?
i wasn't at the rec center saturday, because my kids couldn't go swimming as planned. all the lifegaurds and most of the staff was in dallas for the state championship game. wtg burnet bulldogs on getting to the state final 2 years in a row. you'll get 'em next year. :(

Congrats to the BHS Bulldogs is right. That's some tough stuff getting that far two years in a row!
Thanks ReddMan, the community is still a little down, but we'll bounce back. My 2nd graders took it hard, but they'll live. :)
Okay, here's some Burnet course news that Im actually a little late on. I'm working on a map and scorecards, but I was trying to borrow a range finder to measure distances. Well, thanks to GnDuke, I now have distances for our first 9 holes. The following is a brief hole description with distances. Yeah!!!
#1 216': The first 153' are flat and open, but the last 63' are on the other side of a steep drop-off and blind as a bat. The basket is situated about 20' short of the creek, between two live oaks. Short hole, but tricky.
#2 171': This hole is very reminiscent of #18 at Lago Vista. The entire length of the fairway is steeply sloped up to the basket, but unlike Lago, a bad shot can mean more trouble. If you catch an edge, you can roll a long way from where you want to be. The basket is actually planted on the slope itself, in front of a large live oak, which offers some protection to #3's tee area.
#3 276': This is the most picturesque hole on the course, imho. It measures that distance from tee straight to basket, but there isnt a straight line to the pin from the tee. The only straight line is probably a tomahawk. Teeing off from the highest point on the course to one of the lowest, and requiring a throw over the creekbed (cmon, dont be scared), the low hyzer is your best bet here. The green is protected by large trees and a wide swinging hyzer shot is protected by #2s live oak off the box. its not as scary as it sounds, since most everyone, other than possibly a first time thrower can probably reach the other side of the creek.
#4 228: Im gonna have to go back out and re-measure this one, because this sounds a bit short. Its not a long hole though, so that may be right, it just occurs to me that I may have written it down wrong. At any rate, its not off by more than 30-50, if at all. The teebox here gives you three options and only the annie (or lefty hyzer) keeps you away from the trees. Of course that option puts you parallel to the creek. Pick your poison. The straight shot has to go between two trees that are only about 6 apart and sitting around 30 in front of the box. the hyzer skip shot (your best option) still requires you to needle through two other tree trunks and hit the right landing zone to skip to the basket without going into the schule on the left. Its a birdie hole thats not an easy birdie. Fun, fun, fun.
#5 435: The distance means that its only a birdie chance for our big arm friends, but the fact that the green is fairly protected by large trees on the front and schule behind the basket will keep this from happening most of the time. Other than a small and thin young tree, the fairway is wide open until you get about 390 down it. Unfortunately for some, that one thin tree is right in the middle of the fairway. Sorry.
#6 192: This hole offers the best combination of short birdie length and risk/reward. If you take the straight line or the hyzer line, youre threading your shot through or around trees and exposing yourself to the creek. If you take the two-finger or annie route, there are plenty of trees you must get through and/or under. The baste is situated between three tree trunks a that are very close together, so being on the wrong side of it on your drive is, wellnot good.
#7 276: Pretty much a straightforward hole, except for the fact that you cant go straight at it. There are a couple of trees pretty much right in the middle of the fairway pretty close (50-60) to the box. You can fly the annie route fairly worry-free (unless your annie bails out early and goes left or long over the ob fence) and the hyzer route is plenty open, but has a low ceiling. This basket sits about 20 from the edge of the droop-off to the creek.
#8 354: It wouldnt be too hard to reach this in the air if not for the celing provided by a large tree on the left side of the fairway. The right side of the fairway is also protected by a good size tree, not to mention the creek. A low turnver that you can count on to come back is a good choice here. Its also a great roller hole.
#9 291: This is both an easy hole and the most treacherous hole on the course. Its easy because its a fairly simple straight line drive with a hyzer fade that will take you right to the basket. Its treacherous because youd better put that shot right where it needs to be and make sure it breaks back when it needs to or youre gonna be bouncing off the tree-lined creek and probably in it. This part of Hamilton Creek is about the only part that has water in it right now and its full enough and wide enough that you dont want to be there. There will also be a mando here to keep folks from throwing a big annie over the basketball courts. You can always bail out and land safe left to get your 3, but if you want the birdie, youre gonna have to flirt with the water. Ive also seen a big knife hyzer thrown here, but its kind of a low percentage shot.
There you have it. I look forward to hearing your comments.

Having played the course I can say this is a pretty darn good description. The course is a blast. Lots of birdies to be made, but lots of discs to be lost. I know I threw 2 in the creek during the Thanksgiving holidays and was only able to recover 1 of them.
#6 will find a lot of discs in the water. The hyzer route is the way to get close and make your 2 but it's guarded by quiet a few trees. Hit any of them and you're going for a swim. If you do go for a swim...your drop area is only about 10" in front of the original teebox! hello circle 5
#9 is also a disc eater, especially once he puts in that mando. Pull a little to much to the right and you might as well call Mark on the phone so you can go purchase a replacement disc from him like I had to do. That being said, the next time I played it and threw the shot right I almost skip aced it so it's a really fun hole.
Scoring wise look for some low ones. 1-5 are all birdieable pretty easily, unless you hit one of the many trees (or are as bad a putter as I am) 6 can be as low as a birdie and as high as you're willing to throw discs in the water trying that hyzer route. 7 and 8 are pretty tough holes, though not extremely long, neither has an easy line to the basket. I've yet to have a shot at 2 from less than 60ft or so (granted I suck)
Bottom line, get out to Burnet, you'll love the course.
Speaking of...Mark, I'll be out there next week and most of the following week. Lets get together and play a few rounds!
sounds great, slowmo, i look forward to it.
besides, i want you to show me how 435' #5 qualifies as "birdieable pretty easily." :)

Good course description Mark. I have played the course a few times and really enjoyed it. It's one of those courses you want to keep playing becasue you know you can do better. Just when you think you have a good score you have to play hole #9. I plan on taking a 2 on Holes 5 and 8 that day. An ace on Hole 2 would be nice as well.
I look forward to the first event there on January 17. It will be a fun day getting to play the course four times.

yeah Mark, I'll be in town until Monday at the earliest. probably more like tuesday. There sure have been a lot of folks out playing the course the last few days.
I'm sure I'll be out there pretty much every day for at least a quick 9. I took my sister out to play today for her very first time (yes I'm trying to spread the addiction by giving her discs for Christmas). Her only comment..."This is hard!"
alright slowmo, that's good news. i'll try to go out there today and get in at least 9, if not more. got some errands to run so it might be after 3 before i can break away. gimme a holla.
btw, let's hear more about all these people out at the course. regular players? newbies? anyone we know? do tell. :)
is it time for me to repost all the Winter Warm-Up info again? :)
missed you out there today slowmo. you could of gotten me on a day when i couldn't seem to shoot more birdies than bogeys. two of each for me today. missed a 15' birdie putt on #9 that really steamed me. :( also missed a 20' birdie putt on #4. man that hole gives me more problems than it should.
seems my earlier info on the first ace back in november was inaccurate. met a guy out there today that hit #2 (which we all thought should've been the 1st one to fall anyway) back on october 28th. guy named charles, a long time circle c/searight austin golfer who now lives in burnet, hit it with a spider. heck, he almost showed me a repeat performance out there today. straight and flat up the hill with a fade to the basket and just missed hitting his second one on the hole on the exact same type of throw. it was pretty.
so who all's coming to the Winter Warm-Up and then going to GCCS in Liiiiiiiiive Ooooak the next day?

Spots in the event will be awarded in the order in which they are received and any mail in entries that come in late, should the event fill before the dealine, as I expect it will, of course will be refunded with our apologies. (Keep in mind that we're already short one Am spot since I an't missing this my own self. )
Don't forget that Gimp's Gulf Coast Series Live Oak event is the following day. Barring a miraculous appearance of my beloved Cowboys in the NFC Conference Championship game, I'll be waking up that morning and driving to Live Oak to play.

Even with the short and the long version I don't see the time.
Chris Sandman and I took our first trip to Burnet Sunday. We played 2 rounds of 9. Sandman birdied # 8, Mark said the first one, and I shot 2 under the second nine. I really had to work and play safe to shot that good. We liked the layout and thought it was challenging. Mark's cell isn't working so how do we get a hold of him?
Metal, the LV mini is in the AM and the Super Bowl is in the pm.

Chris S was 4 down the 1st 9 with 6 birds and 1 down the second nine. He was gonna whip up on the second round but that is what makes it a fun course. The Challange! To see in your mind an improvement is easy but to improve on an already good round is tough. I shot +2 the first round and -2 the second. So I shall now boast about beating Sandman for 9. :DYeah!
Altough there and scary on a few holes we had no water or tree penalties. JP

welcome to the board you LURKER!!! :D
Just wanted to make sure you guys all know that the announcement I've posted in other places on the board today will in no way affect my Lago Vista Minis or whatever we do here in Burnet. (For more on Lago, see that thread in a few)
Regarding our first event in Burnet last Saturday, all those of you who didn't make it missed an awful lot of fun on an extraordinarily beautiful January Hill Country day.
Five of us played open (and I'll have you know I was tied with Chile after the 1st 18!) and got to watch Thunder shoot an absofreakinlutely SICK -12 in the first round. After shorting his drive on #1, during the second round of 9 that was half of the first of two full 18 hole rounds, he proceeded to reel off 8 straight birdies, which included #5, #8 and #9. These are three of the toughest holes out there and this was the first time anyone has ever birdied all 3 in the same round. He even birdied #8 twice that day. It was an amazing display of disc golf.
I hope you all plan to make it out to our little short, fun but still quite challenging course real soon. The directions are now listed in the online Course Directory on this site.
I'm planning to start Monthly Minis here and I'm thinking about the 4th Sundays of each month. I'm awaiting a call back from the good folks at the Galloway Hammond Rec Center to be sure its okay, but I don't anticipate any problems. If all goes well, we'll have our first one Feb. 29th.
Our tee signs are up now and hopefully by the time our first mini rolls around, our bridges will be in place also. we've been given the go ahead on tee pads too. In fact, we may even be able to start putting some of the remaining 9 permanent holes in very soon.
Stay tuned to this thread for updates and I hope to see you here soon.

Speaking of which...went out there today and the clean-up crews have been back at work on the course. The creekside edge of the fairway of #6 is now clean as a whistle. All the weeds and brush are completely gone, leaving the straight and/or hyzer line as an even greater temptation for you bold souls. :)

Has the creek gone down yet? :o
It's not a challenging, beat-you-into-submission course like Cameron East, but there's plenty of trouble if you're not careful.....one of my Spiders found the creek right off the bat.
My sister (a newbie) enjoyed it because the holes weren't really long but still had stuff to negotiate.
By the way, I shoulda put a flag where my disc landed OB on #3....impressively OB. Musta been due to the el-uh-vay-shun. I think that what it's called. Whatever it is, we in Houston don't have it.
Hopefully the next we get up there bridges will be installed at 3 and at 8 (so we don't have to cross the RR bridge).
C'mon TB, don't let a little water scare ya! Just because you can go ob in the creek on every hole (yes, even #2 and #5, your shot just has to really, reallly $uck), is no reason for you to wait on a dry spell.
Yes, the creek is passable on #3 and #8 (actually it was on the day of the tournament, the day after y'all were here). Hopefully, the bridges will get done soon, although I think I'm gonna have to do a lot of the footwork and the real work myself. :)
Tee signs are up, although all the decals on 'em aren't complete yet. I'll get on that.

Oh, and something new to frighten you, on #5. You remember above where I said it was possible (albeit unlikely) to go o.b. in the creek behind the basket? Well, it ain't unlikely anymore! The cleanup crews have been rockin' the course, and all the brush and crap behind #5's green is completely gone! Its as smooth as a baby's...well, you know. :) So now Justin's air shots and Chris' rollers have nothing to stop 'em safe. :)

I want to try to squeeze in a round out there. :D:D:D
Thanks. :cool::cool::cool:
i haven't gotten one drawn up yet, but i'm working on it. if you're gonna be in town, ask cindy (i'm pretty sure that's who still runs the office there, and maybe still teaches the classes) to hand you a burnet phone book. i'm in it, although the first name listed is the ex's. gimme a call and i'll meet you out there. it only takes about 45 minutes to play the 9-hole layout we have in place, so squeezing in a round won't be too hard.
if you just happen to make it out there by yourself, the course is really pretty easy to figure out without a map. #1 is blind, but after that its pretty simple. make sure you walk up from #1's tee to see the basket before you throw at it. the water may get in your way otherwise. :)
come to think of it, i'm gonna go get in 9 real quick myself. see ya.
Okay folks, what we have here is a schedule for all the remaining Hill Country Flyers events for '04. As you can see, there's a new mini in town! :)
Unlike our regularly scheduled Lago Vista 1st Sunday Monthlies, the brand spanking new monthlies in Burnet could not be held on a static day each month. With all the conflicts these days, I decided (after some sage advice) to take a look at the calendar (that LSDGA site (http://lsdga.com/) is way cool) and try to come up with a monthly date for the rest of the year that would conflict the least, or at least conflict less, geographically speaking.
Below is what I came up with. I realize its not perfect, and there are still some unfortunate conflicts, but its the best I could come up with.
Also, you'll notice that unlike Lago, Burnet minis are scheduled entirely on Saturdays rather than Sundays. This is out of respect to my Round Rock brothers and sisters, who have already cancelled one of their weekly Sunday minis to support me at Lago for the last year. Their support has been critical to our success out there and I didn't want to burden them further.
So, without further ado:

Mark,
Do you have a start time and cost for the Burnet Mini's?
Also I purchased some blue strobe lights that I thought would work well on discs but they are a little heavy. They would work great on the baskets for the night portion of the 24 hr deal. Get with me! JP
Yes JP, thanks for asking.
The HCF Burnet Monthlies will be virtually the same as 1st Sundays at Lago Vista. The only main difference will be the Pro divisions entry fees.
After much feedback and long consideration of suggestions I have received after running the LV 1st Sundays for over a year, I've decided to bump up the Pro entry to $10, from $8 (Burnet only for the time being LV will stay at $8, for now). The reason for this is that I've heard from a lot of my Open players (which we average great Open numbers at LV - around 20/month) that since its a drive to come out there, they'd enjoy having a few more dollars to play for to make it worth their while.
Well, I've hesitated to change anything at LV since I believe in the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," theory. However, we'll try it out here for a while and see if it makes those guys happy. Burnet is a drive and since the number of players we can accomodate here is slightly less than what we average each month at LV, maybe this will encourage more of our LV Open and Pro Masters players to make the trip to the Big B. :)
Everything else will be the same. Register by 9 a.m. (pleeeeeeeeaaaaaaase?), brief players meetings at 9:30 and tee off as quickly as possible after that. AMs will still be $5 entry, Ace Pot will still be $2 and we'll roll it like we always have (CTP's for half each time if there are no aces) and include it with the LV pot like we used to do when we ran Waco monthlies. This will help it get built up a little higher and both courses offer plenty of Ace runs.
Pros get 100% cash payout and Ams get plastic and prizes from the HCF stock as always.
BTW, if you haven't been out to the course here in a few weeks, it looks amazing. The creek and all the brush is cleaned and cleared. The place looks awesome.
No word yet on a date for the back 9, but the committment is there and hopefully by the summer sometime we'll be playing a SUHWEET 18-hole layout here.
Y'all come, ya heer?

Alrighty, let's get this Burnet ball rolling.
Saturday, March 13th will be the date for this month's HCF Burnet Monthly Mini. For the most part, the details will be the same as the HCF 1st Sunday at Lago Vista. There are 2 main differences.
First, the Pro entry fees will be $10 instead of $8. Secondly, although this is a monthly, the dates will jump around a bit to try (at least as much as is feasible) to reduce conflicts with other area events. It ain't perfect, but with the schedule in Texas what it is these days, its the best we could come up with. The full '04 schedule is posted upthread, and I'll post the dates for each month here with the reminder. We've chosen Saturdays, so as not to burden our RR Dragon friends, since they have shown us so much support at HCF events.
Here is all the pertinent info:
Register by 9 a.m.
Tee-off 9:30 a.m.
All Pro Divisions - $10
Al Am Divisions - $5
Ace Pot - $2
CTP for 1/2 Ace Pot if no Aces are hit.
Other 1/2 will be rolled into a travelling Ace Pot that will be for both Burnet and Lago Vista (currently $40)
1 Round of 18 will be played using the 9-hole
layout and playing it twice straight through
Meet in the far back parking lot to register
As in Lago Vista, there is a $50 HCF Course Record
Bounty. The record in competition is currently
sitting at -12, held by Chris Himing (who reeled
off 8 straight birds, including $5 and $8)
If you haven't seen our beautiful little course here yet, you're missing a real good time. We have dirt tees, but good signage, along with new DISCatchers with the latest chain configuration. The holes are short on average (one of 435', one over 350' and one just under 300'), but offer great risk/reward and shot options. You wanna go for the birdie? Well, its your plastic pal, do as you like. :) The creek comes into play directly on #1, #3, #6 (depending on your bravery) and #9. You can also flirt with, get kicked to, or otherwise find yourself in it on #2 (ask TBender how to do that), #4, #5, #7 and #8.
So what I'm trying to say is STAY OUTTA THE CREEK and you'll be golden. :)
As always, I'll have plastic and merch for sale and we'll payout the Pros in cash at 100%, while those placing in the Am divisions will take home a variety of Pick-Your-Own merchandise.
Any questions, or if you just wanna come get in a round out here with the Course Pro ( :D), gimme a call at 830-385-9682.

And now I'll bite, what did Mark do that would be worth $10,000? He didn't make a putt, did he?
Chris, I'm not sure what "spanking the kangaroo" means out in the bush, but I can assure you I ain't doing it. So don't even ask! Spank your own kangaroo and we don't want to hear about it.
Tony, I'll let Chris or Justin, or Chile or MatMan tell the story, but suffice it to say that even though it happened to me, it was still funny enough to make me laugh as hard as everyone else.* :)
I just got my vengence though. My personal best in an 18 hole round out there had been the -3 I shot in the 1st round that day. I just bested that by one with -4. Didn't see the creek anywhere close to my shots either, Chris. I don't know what Tony's talking about.

WOW.....definitely the top 3, but I woudnt want to put them in an order.....
Caddyshack started it all, Happy was a good followup, 20 years later, and Tin Cup was great, for a semi serious comedy.
ALL CLASSICS!!!
(Happy may be my personal favorite) :o
Okay, my $.02. All three, as SD points out are great. All three have some truly memorable golf-related moments.
Having said that, one of my favorite "movie" moments, golf or otherwise, is seeing the beaten down look on Cheech's face as Costner stares straight ahead, holds out his hand and reiterates, "Ball!" Priceless.
And yes, the funny story that started this discussion is similar to that scene, only my "caddies" were urging me to re-tee, rather than advising against it. :)
****, sounds like I definitely missed a classic Martyr Moment....
I promise ill make it up there at some point this year!!!

very nice course for the amount of land they have to work with. This dragon was a little of afraid of the water (MUDDY). so shot a safe even par for the front 9. I can see someone easily getting a 2 on every hole. They are all reacheable. : ) thanks Mark for the tour. How's the kid's leg?
With the help of modern science, he'll walk again someday. :) He's fine, but he's gonna be freakin sore and swollen. Guess he won't try any daring balancing acts for awhile. :)
Thanks for coming out. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Maybe next time I can play like I've done it before. :)
I'll agree with C-Dub that the Pros and top Adv. guys should be able to two any hole we have in the ground on this 1st 9. Whether you will or not, is another story. #5 and #8 (#5 435 and with the basket somewhat covered by trees and #8 354 with trees to go under or over) are never gonna be what you'd call birdie holes, but they've both been birdied. #9 (297 with creek on right side of tight fairway) is certainly birdieable, but it takes some testicles to ignore the water.
March 13th I'm looking forward to hearing more about what Central Texas golfers think about our little birdie course with teeth.
So far, Himing's the only one who's actually tamed it for 18 holes with a -12. Maybe someone can break that next Saturday and walk away with an extra $50 for thier efforts. :)
Just a tease for you guys that aren't going to Pro WD or PIAC this weekend. Come out to the 1st ever Burnet Monthly Mini and see if you can beat the personal best of the Course *cough* Pro. I shot a -5 through 18 holes yesterday, with 2 birdies on #9 and only one silly bogey (played for a 3 on #1 and missed an easy par putt).
If you guys can't beat my score out there you're weak! :)
(Maybe I should play Open on Saturday?)

oh sure Mark, just tease me by reminding me that you have a mini out there this weekend. At least I'll be playing in the PIAC and have a reason for missing it. I'll hope to make your mini out there in June though. I'm looking forward to playing the course again
Thanks Doug, maybe we can actually get in a round together out here someday. :)
Well folks, that's one State Champ who won't be here this Saturday. :) Who's in?
I'm debating about whether to have the newspaper out or just take some pics myself. If I have folks out to look at what we're doing, I'd like for it to be a day when we have a good turnout. If you're not going to WD or PIAC, come see one of the prettiest and most fun little 9-hole courses around and play in an HCF Mini.
If you've seen it before all the last round of cleaning was done, you'll be impressed by what the area looks like now. Very picturesque.
So, who all's coming? :)

Don't think I'm going to make the 600 mile round-trip to PA this weekend afterall. So I'll most likely make my first trip to Burnet this weekend and play your little course.
Is the Rec Center south of the Burnet Municipal Airfield? What time are sign-ups and tee-off?

-5? You? Isn't this like the whole "Mark" and "cash" thing we went over previously?
Robbie, not "little course," "water-infested weenie-arm course." Not that I'm bitter about losing my Spider right out of the car or anything. Actually, I should blame Doug. He told me the course is short and easy. ;)
By the way, it's tempting to skip out of Centex in Austin Saturday morning just to play Bur-NET, since I'm missing my chance to play PIAC.
PS: Mark miss a putt? Nah, never. He's a good putter. Look at all the practice he gets... :)
<font size=1>For those who have a chance to play the course, do it! It's a great, fun course, even when the creek is raging (like Mark during a 3-putt).</font>
Great Rooster. It was nice to officially meet ya Sunday at Lago! :)
Yes, the center is about a half mile south of the airport on the east side of Hwy 281.
All the times and such are exactly the same as Lago Minis (sign up by 9 tee-off at 9:30, ect.). Here's all the info, cut and pasted from a prior post:
Posted 2-25-04
Register by 9 a.m. (pleeeeeeeeaaaaaaase?), brief players meetings at 9:30 and tee off as quickly as possible after that. AMs will still be $5 entry, (Pro divisions will be $10, explained upthread) Ace Pot will still be $2 and we'll roll it like we always have (CTP's for half each time if there are no aces) and include it with the LV pot like we used to do when we ran Waco monthlies. This will help it get built up a little higher and both courses offer plenty of Ace runs. Pros get 100% cash payout and Ams get plastic and prizes from the HCF stock as always.
Look forward to seeing you and a lot of my fellow Tejas golfers out at this beautiful little park Saturday morning.
BTW, we'll be headquartered in the far back parking lot by hole #7, unless there's a big softball thing going on. I think we should have the lot to ourselves, but if not, we'll be up by hole #1.
Y'all come, ya heer?
I tell you what Tony, If you do make it out on Saturday, I'll play whatever division you're brave enough to and teach you how to play this "weenie arm, water infested course." :)
I'm on my way out there in a few minutes to finish putting the distances on the tee signs. I'm trying to get the city to mow too, since we've had enough rain to take away all my skip shots. :)
The creek is passable though Tony, don't be afraid. :)
The following is a post from the Lago thread, regarding the status of our little water hazard. :)
Rocco, The creek is currently sitting at the level where it spends most of the year. In fact, earlier this winter was the first time I've ever seen it bone dry in the four years I've spent on the grounds of the Rec Center project.
What this means to golfers is that if you go in the water below #2 (rare), on #3 (unless you overshoot and are wet behind the green), behind #5, on #7 or along the fairway of #8 (unless you're too far past the actual basket), retreiving your discs should be no problem.
However, being wet on #1, #4, #6 or #9 likely means you won't get your disc out right away at best. The creek in those areas is deep and full enough (and currently kinda murky from the previous rains and runoff) that you can't spot your plastic in the water. As for getting in it, well, people do. Some discs do come back as we have a couple of local water dogs who have been taught good karma practices by a local golfer.
Finished the signs out there yesterday, with all distances posted, along with those fun little decals (sheesh, that was tedious). Its a definite improvement.
Can't wait for a lot of you to get your first look at the course on Saturday.
Played 9 holes yesterday after finishing the signs. All I can say is that this course turns tough with some stiff wind.

Mark is probably working on rake he brings out to retieve the discs and return them after you have purchased some new ones from him. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
I am going to try and make it. It depends on the weather? I'll bring some regular plastic to donate to the creek. :cool:JP
Hadn't thought of that rake idea, Jon. Thanks! :)
Man, we just can't buy a break from the weather here at the prettiest lil' 9-hole course in CenTex, can we? Our first event we held had a very low turnout due to the fact that heavy rains the day before scared people away. Even so, the course drains beautifully and that day the conditions were great for golf.
As of now we are having a slight but steady drizzle, which is expected to continue on and off through part of tomorrow. Still, its not expected to be cold with temps in the mid 60's, so it won't be insufferable.
Come out, have some fun, see a great new course...and don't be skeert! :)
Hi All. Well, the wet stuff has let up a little here. We're gonna have fun in the a.m. regardless at the first ever Burnet Monthly Mini.
Bobby Logan is here from Lubbock staying overnight at Casa de Martyr. He's looking forward to seeing all this "scary" water y'all keep referring to.
See ya in the morning.
Who's coming?
F-it. I'm in. Can't let no rain scare me plus doesn't look like i'll be getting drunk tonight so I will be able to get up early in the morning. Hope you have some max weight champion plastic cobras just in case I blow a hole.
My brother says he wants to come too so tell the creek that it will definately be recieving a couple new discs.
If you were up posting at 1:30, will you still be getting up early Rocco? :)
Its not raining this morning. I'll be optimistic.
See y'all out there for HCF Monthly Burnet Mini #1 in about an hour.
God bless coffee. :)
Well, from humble beginnings, and all that... :)
We had decent weather for the first ever HCF Burnet Monthly Mini this morning. Even with all the rain over the last couple of days (including quite a lot late last night) the course was in great shape. The temps were in the mid 50's and the rain stayed away. Hamilton Creek was running, but the crossings on #3 and #8 were fine, no problems. This course shapes up very well after a rain.
We only had 7 players, but hey, our first Lago Mini only had 10. :) If we have half the interest out here that we have there, all will be well.
At any rate, here are your scores:
<table border="1"><tr><td> DivCode</td><td>Place</td><td>First Name</td><td>Last Name</td><td>Rd1</td><td>Total</td><td>Cash/Value

Yes, that's right. No typo. Mine was the only under par score.
I'd like to thank everyone who came out from Austin, Lago, Lubbock, Temple and yes, even Burnet. :)
If you want a fun and challenging course to experience, be sure to make our April monthly, Saturday, April 10.
Check the course directory for directions. We had a Lago player who got to the course too late to play the mini. He stopped at the convenience store right across the street from us and asked for directions. They sent him back to the middle of town. Not everyone here knows about our little birdie course with teeth, apparently. :)
Y'all come, ya heer?
Oh, I almost forgot. Jon Peacock walked away with half of our Ace Pot, which from Lago and this morning's entries was worth $43.50. (JP, I owe ya $.50 :D)
Had a good time out in Burnet. Hole #9 swalloed up my 160g. Orc that was so new it didn't have a name on it. If anybody goes after it dries up and finds it I will be willing to give a reward for it.

Bye Bye confidience Champion Valk, :o! I did park the CTP so all is good. :D! Mark get to work on that creek rake. JP
Yeah Jon, I'm gonna get to work on that. :)
In the meantime, let's stop talking so much about the creek. Everyone is getting too SCARED to come play our little birdie course. Evidently, CenTex DG'ers have a severe case of hydrophobia. :D

I will be back for sure.
My brother and I went out to the course today with some wadders to try to retrieve the discs we lost on Saturday but first we decided to play a round. Bad idea. :( He threw a disc in on one and I threw two discs in, one on six and one on nine. The good news is we were able to retrieve his disc on one and mine on six. The bad news is that was the only discs of ours that we found (sorry, nobody elses discs were found either). The creek was still deep around hole nine and a three foot mocasin was laying on the trees in the water gaurding deeper access to the water on hole one.
So in summary, we have an orange/red z-mrv with a Kansas City Chiefs dye in the water in hole one (name Armand and number is on it), a purple champion viking with the name and number of $imon on it (he sold me the disc), and a blue champion 160 gram orc w/o name and number on it. :( If anyone finds these discs please call 254-773-3694. I will reward with some discs. In turn, next time we go out to the course we will look for/return all discs found with names and numbers on them.
For those who have not yet been out to this course and are reading this thread, don't let the water scare you away. You really have to marka.....I mean blow a shot to put one in the water. Play safe and not only will you keep all the discs you came with but you will still have a good chance to shoot well at this course.
I also had the pleasure of meeting and shooting a round with Burnet local Kenny. Just thought I would like to thank him for helping us retrieve our discs back. Mark, if you see him please let him know we were thankful.
John Peacock, we found your confidence building valkyrie on hole one. :D I will give you a call if I play the course out a Lago soon or will return it to you at the next Lago mini.

Boy, did we ever! I'd say here at the house we were pretty lucky. Usually with winds like that I can count on some big pieces of my backyard trees laying on the ground to greet me the next day. No probs though. Haven't been out to the course yet, but I'll go take a look at it later.

Some advice for lefty's who plan to play the Burnet course: bring plenty of extra discs, lol. Nice short course, definitely tests your skills...esp if you are a lefty. Thanks to Mark and Chris Himing for playing a round with me, I had alot of fun.
C'mon John, you're scaring the poor folks. :)
You didn't lose any discs when WE were playing with ya, what happened? :)
Seriously, for leftys, I'd think only #9 is too scary, but it scares us all. And as straight as you were throwing that MS yesterday, you should have no probs, whichever hand you're using. :)
Enjoyed it. Thanks for coming out.

come on now...9 has a nice little lefty route as long as you haven't gone out and put up a mando somewhere. :)
Actually Doug, they're putting up a fence around the basketball courts there and the corner of that fenced off area (corner post on left) will be a mando. Thanks for asking. :)
And while we're talking about #9, I'm curious what you guys think the best hole out there is. #9 is certainly memorable, but I kinda think that #3 is the shiznit. :)
What do you guys think that have played the 9 we have in the ground now?

personally I like 6 quite a bit. I have to admit I've only played it in winter conditions so far. That scary hyzer route over the creek might not even exist when there are leaevs on the trees. 8 is also a great hole...I'm in the creek there more than any other hole out there.
Can't wait to see the next 9...any ideas when it might be going in?
I'm still hoping for by the end of summer for the rest of the course to be completed.
Yeah, #6 is cool and with all the clearing they've done on the edge of the creekside of the fairway there, the hyzer should still be available when its all green. You'll just have to take it a little lower.

I played 1-6 and 9 again. Lost an MS on #3, QJLS and Z-XL on #9. Fortunately, the only one I cared about getting back was the QJLS.....and we found it thanks to...can't remember his name.....the guy that walked on with us when we got to #7. Thanks alot <insert name>!
(and that spike shot on #1 you saw right before leaving was PARKED 2' from pole...no lost disc there, hehe)
#9 isn't scary....I mean, its all about throwing a slow hook (lefty), which is something everyone should be able to do. I just didn't do it yesterday. ;-)
Let me rephrase: this course is challenging enough that to learn it well, you'll have to flirt with the water alot...no pain no gain. :-)
I like hole 3 as well. Hole 9 runs a close second.
Well, Chris must really be feeling poorly. He didn't manage to get me out here by double digits today through 18 holes. :)

Is that creek down any? I'm itching to get my orc out.
Its down in places Rocco, like the usual low spots, but not on #9 where your Orc is resting. Kenny went in the other day and I know he found some stuff. I'll check with him to see if your Orc is among those recovered.
BTW, The next mini is slated for April 10th, which I just remembered is Bluebonnet Festival Weekend. For those with families, you could make a fun day out of it. There's a parade, a flea market on the square, and a badass airshow put on by the Confederate Air Force (much of which you'll be able to see from the course since the airport is basically across the street).
There's also a softball tourney that weekend, so we'll be parking up by #1 instead of #7.

Kind of avenged myself out there today. Missed a makeable 25' birdie putt on #8 (sweet drive) and a 12 footer for bird on #9 on my last two holes and still tied my personal best 49 through 18. Birds on #1 (x2), #2, #3, #4 (x2) and #6, with two bogeys - #5 and #9 (yes Tony, it was my last hole birdie try that I three-putted, thanks for asking).

No golf in the Big B today. Its raining like crazy.
I have to say that yesterday when I went out there, there were two groups of casuals on the course. They don't live in town either (although Megan Smith, who some of you may know, is now working here). Makes me feel good to see folks out there playing.
It was so much fun designing this course and trying to make fun and challenging holes with the property I had to work with. I'm all fired up to design another one.
Why shoudl I know Megan Smith?
Okay, I should have said that some of you CenTex area golfers may know her. She's a Rec Women's player who doesn't play tourneys too often (played RRS this weekend and told me that SueMac kicked her butt) but plays golf a lot in the Austin area. We see her out at Lago quite a bit too.
I wish she had more time to play. She can throw far, although not as accurately as she'd like, and if her short game and putting got some work, she could be a much better player. She just doesn't get to play enough.

Mark we have a few free weekends coming up and might just take you up on that offer!!
Sounds great guys, you'd be welcomed.
Played a round with the assistant director of the Rec Center today. He's gone from saying things like, "**** hippie golf," to calling me up in the middle of the day and whining until I agree to go play with him. He's really a cool guy that's been instrumental in helping us get things going out there, even if he is a bit of a redneck. :)
I told him today that one of the main complaints I've had from folks who have come to see the course is that there's a lack of trash cans (hey, if that's the biggest complaint, we're doing pretty good). He said, no sweat, we'll have 'em right away. :)
Moral? Take a city employee golfing today, you'll be glad you did. :)
Well, its a beautiful day in the Big B. Gonna get in 18 today. Anyone down?
I'm gonna take that as a NO. :)
I'll be out there by 1 if there are any takers.
No, the big news isn't my round today (although -2 in a vicious wind ain't too shabby).
Talked to the director of the City's PARD today and...the land purchase we've been waiting on to start the final 9 holes is a done deal!
Hopefully, I'll get to walk this area of the property tomorrow and start laying out the 4 holes that have been causing the holdup. 18 Holes by the end of summer (if not sooner) looks like a very real probability now! WooHoo!

Actually Tony, I've often spoken of the plan to try to get an 18-hole course out at Inks Lake State Park. The former honcho there was an aquaintance of mine and the new honchette is the mom of a friend of the squid's. Its been talked about and they were receptive to the concept in the past. What about the dogs ?
Other than the 130 lb. ball of fur probably wanting to sleep in his tent with him, they shouldn't be a problem. :)
Little news. I had posted upthread that we would be parking up by #1 for the April 10th mini, due to a softball tourney. I've now been told that the softball folks will be outta there before then and the upper areas will be filled due to the big festival and airshow that day. So, we'll be parking down by #7 in the back as usual.
Who all is coming out for this second Burnet mini? Get your name in the paper. :)
The course is looking sooooo sweet all green and purty. #3's Big trees have definitely ended the hopes of lucky shots that fail to go wide enough and the greening up of the trees on and in the creek on the hyzer line for #6 have made taking that route even more of a cheek squeezer (credit to James McCaine for that line).
Y'all come, ya heer?

Mark, has anyone found my 2 disc in the creek along hole 9?
We do have one local waterdog, who pulls discs out now and then and tries to get them back to their owners. I'll check with him today and see what he has.
He won't hold you hostage to get your discs back when he has them, but he does like to trade occasionally your discs back for any spare plastic you have laying around. He gives them to his kids, who go out and play with him a lot. His two boys are actually developing into players, so I always try to give him something for them if the disc he finds of mine is one I want or need back. Otherwise I tell him to give it to them.
One was a purple Omega, right? What was the other one?

Mark, thanks for the round today, let your local river rat know I would gladly offer up a reward for that Starfire in the creek on #9.
As Mark says, "A bridie course with teeth" and also "Karma is real". I was commenting how well he was representing the School of Back and Forth Putting on hole #8, When it was my turn, I showed him how I should be eligable for advanced placement in said school. :o

Open mouth, insert 4. Classic!
Thanks Allan. It was great to be able to get in a round today since I wasn't gonna make it to Lago. Its always fun playing that course for 18 with a fun guy to golf with.
Not to mention we got to see some of the weirdest putting displays one round could possibly offer.
How 'bout 3 different groups playing our lil' ole' course by mid-morning on a weekday? Nice to see, makes me proud.

Hey Mark. I'll be in town this weekend for 4 days. Want to get together and play a bit?
Doug
Definitely! Always up for a round in the Big B. :) Maybe this time we'll actually get to play. :)
Besides, I gotta get ready to represent TE at the mini on Saturday. You're probably in town for Bluebonnet Festival? Tell the folks you'll be at the Airshow after the round on Saturday. :)

really just comming because it's Easter and we have a 4 day weekend at the school. Seems like a good time to get in lots of golf. Might have to try to go into Austin and play a few courses there sometime too.
Count me in for Burnet this Saturday. I'll be bringing the waders and the super rake to try to reclaim my lost discs. Any others found will be given back if name and number is on back or you can tell me what the disc was as well as what the color/weight is.

Mark, I didn't know someone else that played golf moved into town?
Hehe. I expect a better showing from myself this month. I won't be playing timid this time.

Mark, I am sure it is posted somewhere, but what time does the mini start on Sat????
Sign up by 9 tee off by 9:30. That's what I'm shooting for. Hopefully we'll always get it done here, not like in late arriving Lago. :)
BTW, James, very funny. :)
I did beat the field last month. Only under par score. HA!
Of course, there were no Pros. :)

Viva la Rebelution ?
Isn't that what they say about a movement after it has died, usually in a violent and painful manner ?
Don't give up hope yet Bobby, the tournament hasn't even happened yet.

Was thinking of coming over to play the burNET Disc-Eatin' Mini since I have Friday off, but Kat has decided to buy a car on Saturday and insists I attend that instead.
