Mark,
How much rain did Big B get with that storm the other night? Is the creek up? Did it flush some, (my), discs down stream? I had over 4" in Lago. There was water running over the new bridge on 10 at the Resort but it held steady.

Apr 08 2004, 08:09 PM
The creek is up, but don't be scared. The course pro will be here to give you lessons.

I finally made it to Burnet and EXPerienced their course. From Austin it is a scenic drive that will take you about an hour. I only played the course with a roc and an EXP. And this course will require many different shots to beat this course. The course has dirt tee boxes and tee signs that help you navigate a fairly easy course to follow. This is located around a Rec center that has many activates to enjoy from a RV park, in town amenities, a future pavilion to music piped across the grounds. A creek runs through the course making for a must accurate shot. The course is not a long course, but with the creek and I suggested creative O.B would make for a very challenging course. Many of the holes have natural fairways that have many options to take a risk and get rewarded. There is some elevation and many options to find water. The REC center and city are very engaged in the idea of a well maintained 18 holes course. As it is now there are only 9 holes and plenty of quality land to extend to an 18 hole lay out. The things I see that need improvement is the two creek crossings, which I have been told are being considered for bridges. And hole #2 (a wee hole) needs some irrigation and a safer path to the hole. The city and the course are inline to run a P.D.G.A. tournament that could easily become one of the must schedule for all you Texas boys.
"till next time see you in the middle of the fairway!"

Good review Vinnie. I think #2 would be very interesting if it were terraced. Maybe a couple of 2' retaining walls.

Apr 09 2004, 11:34 AM
Thanks Vinnie. I'm very glad that you enjoyed the course as I enjoyed the company.

It was nice that the first time you got to see it was in all its glory with everything green and water in Hamilton Creek. I'm like a proud poppa, since that course and getting it in the ground, is what got me into disc golf in the first place.

Now, bring your whole bag next time and come get that $50 bounty for a new course record. :)

Hey Mark, what happened to #8? I just came back from the course and they are putting in a road right where the basket used to be.

Jun 03 2004, 05:11 PM
Nothing to worry about there Doug. What's happening is there is an LCRA retention area being put in the fairway of #8. According to the LCRA, the hole won't be permanently affected. The rention "pond" won't actually hold any water, but will instead catch the runoff from the ballfields and the RV park. There will be drain lines underneath it and everything it catches will drain into the creek. When they have it finished, they will plant grass and landscaping bushes back on the fairway and it will look better than ever. The basket will probably be moved about 25' or so to the right up on a high spot. The little dirt road that's there is a temporary one for construction.

Never fear. I'm on it. :)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy about it, but it will all get worked out and we'll still be able to have a hole there. Hopefully it will look even better than before with the landscaping.

Whats up Markus, had a great time at Lago the past two weekends and the ace sure eased a pretty bad round last weekend. The retention pond is being added at your course to protect the creek from silt build up and silt runoff from every thing down stream. I'm sure it seems like a waste of money but will benefit the course in the long run. The silting of our waterways is a major problem and if it can be helped by retention ponds bring em on. These have become a standard pain in the *** for all our new developments so I'm quiet familar with them. Keep up the good work Mark.

Jun 09 2004, 12:45 PM
Hey Ricky, as always thanks for the support and thanks for the retention pond explantion.

As it has been explained to me, it will be turned into a beautiful little area in the middle of our fairway. Its just a minor and temporary inconvenience right now.

I sure hope we don't have to change that hole up too much though. It was the most natural and challenging fairway we had on the course. I would've like a little more communication with the City and the LCRA, but I'm used to it. I've had to be a huge pest to get anything done out there.

The City is slowly starting to get on board though, since its obvious even to our skeptics now that the disc golf course gets more use than anything outdoors out there except possibly the ballfields.

Hope to have the other 9 in soon. We'll keep y'all updated.

Jun 29 2004, 06:53 PM
Updated weather report for the Big B:

RAIN UNTIL THE END OF THE F'N WORLD. Immediately following the world's end, there will be a 1 round mini.

AARRRRGGGGG!!!!!!!! Its never gonna freakin' stop!

Just to update, all planned activities at the Burnet course are on temporary hold.

Hole #8 is currently out of the ground so that a retention pond can be built and we're still waiting to get into the new land to design part of the next 9.

I hope to have the full course up and running by August.

The 8 holes that are in the ground look better and greener than ever and the city is mowing it like crazy.

I'm gonna go see my old buddies at the city council at a meeting in July to try and ask that all this work be expedited and just to say hi. I'll keep y'all apprised of our progress.

Jun 30 2004, 01:15 AM
I guess that means I wont have to worry about them draining the creek and getting my discs back in this lifetime. :(

esalazar
Jul 01 2004, 01:49 PM
hey mark, when you planning on a mini at your course? im sure we can comr up with temp baskets to temporarily replace the one removed!!!

Jul 01 2004, 03:09 PM
As I said above, Efrain, all planned activities are on hold out there for right now.

A temp basket isn't a problem (I do have some), but the fairway of #8 is pretty much unplayable when its even partially wet, since its nothing but muddy clay right now.

I'm trying to get the city to expedite this work so we can get back on track. But, its hard to ask people to drive out here to play a mini on an 8 hole course.

Hopefully, all 18 will be in the ground in a couple of months and we can start having some real fun on what I hope will be one of the most fun courses in Central Texas.

Of course, if you wanna come out here and play the 8 we've got, I'd love to have ya out.

On second thought, maybe I should start a campaign to push me to a 5-star guy. :)

Vote for the Rev. in '04! Vote with your stars! C'mon, let's get behind a 5-star candidate that everyone can hate equally.

Jul 01 2004, 05:50 PM
And now, from the good news/bad news department.

Good News:
A new hole #8, albeit altered, should be in the ground within 2-3 weeks. The LCRA is talking like they don't want the original position, because they feel it would interfere with their retention pond landscaping, but a new hole is a priority for the city, as is the finishing of the pond project.

Bad News:
(And this is making me sick) The other 9 holes may be put on hold until Spring '05. I won't post the details yet, since its possible they could change their minds, but optimism is low. Who knows, living next door to a councilman may finally come in handy. :)

Possible Good News:
Not letting any grass grow under my feet in a desire to get a quality 18-hole course in the area, I've been speaking with the City of Marble Falls and they are receptive. More details as I get them, but it looks like my course design resume may get an expansion. :)

Aug 03 2004, 01:52 PM
Just in case anyone within driving distance is reading this, I'm headed out to the Big B course for a couple hours of practice.

Yes, I'll be in Bowling Green and I think I could arrange for the skirt to be in Bowling Green as well.

Of course, when it comes to my golf game, public humiliation is **** near redundant.

:D True... but I'm all for redundancy! :D

I'll bring The Skirt to Kentucky, BUT you guys HAVE to make him WEAR IT!!! (Like I couldn't the first time, but if he ever gives me another shot - it's shaved legs for MarkA ;))

There it is, I'll even get a shirt made up that says in large letters "I've Never Beaten Mark Atwood".

and in really small letters "on his home course".

By my count, just knowing the skirt is in the same state will add 3-4 strokes to his score.

OK, no wager, forget I mentioned anything about the skirt. I didn't realize the severe trauma just mentioning it would cause you.

I'll just drop by for a round of fun competition. You there ?

You didn't scare me off, I haven't been able to look at the board for days.

I'm considering your offer of the wager.

Right now all I'm considering is blasting outta here for the rest of this freakin' gorgeous day and going to play golf. :)

It hardly seems fair that Mark should accept a challenge from just a couple of players. It seems only right that if Mark is going to play a wagered round that it should be open to any and all comers. Furthermore, it seems that the wager should be that if Mark comes in DFL he should agree to wear the "skirt." It also seems appropriate that something of this much entertainment value should cost a nominal fee, say $10. Then, all of the proceeds could be used to accomplish something important, say... support of The RRAS foundation who's sole purpose is the elimination of debt for retired third world disc golf organizers - or some such.

I'd pay $10 to see Mark in a skirt.

Just wanted to share a couple of things with y'all (for our Texican impaired Aussie friend, that means "you all"). :)

I was out at the course today teaching a group of kids from the Boys & Girls Club about disc golf. It was a blast to watch them play and hear their questions and see their reactions. Reminded me that this sport is supposed to be fun.

Also, before the kids got there, I talked to the director of the rec center. He said we're ready to start laying out the rest of the course and they're going ahead and ordering the other nine baskets. Wow, only took about six years. Maybe by the time good summer weather gets here, we'll have a fun, challenging and pretty full 18 to play in the Big B.

That's good news about the city's interest in the course, Mark.

Where in Burnet is the course located? I never spent much time directly in the city, but used to drive Hwy 29 from N. Austin area out to Llano quite a bit, so I'm vaguely familiar with the terrain.

Bam Bam, the course is just off of 281 behind the rec center near the airport. Better directions up thread.

This is falling by the wayside.

Mark, are we still one for the 17th ?

Apr 07 2005, 01:17 PM
Sunday, April 17th. I'll be there. You best bring your game because I'm...I'm....ah, screw it. I got nothing. :)

But yeah, definitely come out to the Big B for a round and a visit.

Don't really get to see folks anymore due to work and geography.

Just thought I'd let you guys know about this.

Last year I asked for some disc donations for the Boys and Girls Club. They had wanted to start playing golf at the Burnet course. That was really before the club here was up and running, as they were still using only the club in Marble Falls.

Well, they told me to hang on to them, although we did use them with a couple of groups, until they could get their program up and running in Burnet.

Well, I'm about to leave the house for the regular Friday Disc Golf Day of the Burnet Boys and Girls Club. It is now a regular part of their summer program.

I counted up all those donated discs, plus went through a lot of my old ones that I don't use anymore (as if I use any of them, right?), and I'm taking a box of 108 discs with me to hand over to the club today.

Big thanks to all who gave and remember that when you pass the game on to a kid, you strengthen the whole sport.

Anybody know if the hole that was gone August of last year is back? Seems like I read a while back that this course may be extended to a full 18 has that been done yet?

I am going to be at the boat races in Aug. and wanted to go play a round on the friday. Just wanted to know if there were 9 baskets now or still 8, or possibly 18.

thanks

Hole 8 was there, so all 9 baskets are in.

Sep 29 2005, 08:41 PM
FYI - The Big B is ALL IN! WooHoo!!!!

All 18 baskets are planted, and it only took me 6 years of red tape, fundraising, fighting city hall and p-a-t-i-e-n-c-e.

Now, before you fill up your tanks at $3/gal. and make the trek to Burnet, there are a couple of things I need to alert everyone too.

First, tee placements for the new holes have not been marked yet, and the city has not bought the other 9 signs that they owe us. They will, I'll make sure of it, but I can't say exactly when. What I can say is that this weekend if at all possible, Amie and I will hopefully get to spend some time out there marking tees.

Secondly, some of the new holes are in the long awaited acquisitioned property behind #4 and #5, and will require some clearing of brush before they are easily playable. I know that won't stop some people from playing them, but they won't play the way I've designed them until this clearing is done. So, don't fall in love with any of those lines just yet, because they WILL change slightly.

And lastly, and this is the real bummer, for now there are two holes that are complete crap, with a third that was far less than optimum. This was necessary because the State, due to the grant process, will not allow any part of the Rec Center project to be on any land that is not contiguous with the property. After Texas Parks & Wildlife's inspection of the property and the release of the final check, we will be allowed to move around onto the land on the other side, underneath the railroad bridge, where I had originally designed what will be two, maybe three, of the best and most scenic holes of the entire course. As for when that will be, all I can say is soon. The final TP&W inspection was supposed to be last month, so maybe even real soon.

That's the news for now. As always, I'll keep you guys up to date on the project. After 4 years to get the first 9 in, I'd say this final phase is moving at lightning speed. LOL :)

Just wanted to say thank you to Des Reading for allowing me to add a multiple time World Champ to the growing list of top pros who I've had the pleasure and good fortune to beat on my home course. :)

She and Jay and Thunder came out for a fun round of the original 9 +1.

It was great to see you guys and to show you around the "Birdie Course with Teeth" today.

I can't believe I blew my best ever chance to beat Himing, but he got me in the last couple of holes...as usual. :(

Enjoyed it guys. Have a fun vacation.
