I just want to point out that right behind that polehole where the high grass starts is another drop-off of about 20-feet. A shot with a little too much mustard could easily fly and roll well past.

Being about 100 feet away from the basket and with the steep elevation change, that is one helluva shot, Goocher!!!

Indeed. I played the course for the first time in December and threw an absolute bomb (for me) with a Destroyer that skipped off the road and ended up just short of the last big tree before the long pin, and gave me an easy upshot for a birdie 3 - probably my highlight of the round.

It's a tough one. Throw in some wind and yer just playing "position golf" and hoping for a three.

The following images were taken at Deer Lakes Park on March 15, 2009. Members of the Pittsburgh Flying Disc Society are working with Allegheny County Parks to build 54 concrete tee pads on the 18-hole course which was installed in late 2006. Located in Russellton, PA (just outside of Pittsbugh), the challenging par 66 layout at Deer Lakes is a perfect compliment to the championship designs found at the other local courses, Knob Hill and Moraine State Park. The current tee project will be completed this summer.

Pad work looks great, but it seems like alot of overkill and expense to build those elevated tees. Is the flooding issue 6 feet away where the white blocks or the blue blocks are that bad that a 1-2 foot elevation wouldn't have worked?

The white and blue tee blocks are temporary tee placements until the construction is completed. Retaining wall height is necessary for proper drainage as well as the required space needed for the installation of level pads measuring 5' x 13'. Approximately 4-5 of the eighteen holes will require this type of retaining wall due to the angle of the slope. The remainder of the tee pad installation at Deer Lakes will seem like a cake-walk once we finish these monsters. :)

As for the expense, the county is paying for all materials while we provide the labor.

It's a lot of work, but well worth it and the tees are going to be so awesome. They already built one a few months back, and it was a major improvement over the original tee.

These tee pads are so nice, can't wait til thye concrete comes in!!

Next project, Moraine.

Wow! How great to have such high quality material and built it so stout. Deadmen to anchor the wall and drainage and the whole 10 yards. Hats off to you guys for setting a high standard for workmanship and quality. Most of us have to scrounge for used railroad ties and power poles to do our projects. Okay, I am envious! Those timbers are huge and look like pain! Seriously, though, how did you get J Gary to work? hahahahah. Keep up the great work. I've never seen pad shoring that looked better.

good stuff! was that pressure treated as well? if so then good call using the leftover wood blocks as backfill/filler but if not then that could cause issues a while down the road when the filler blocks rot and the dirt starts to cave in those areas underneath the pad.

either way though its going to make a great teepad and I def. don't think overkill... if you have the resources and manpower then do it right eh?!

and i'm sure Stan's mouth is still hanging open in awe over the materials! Renny would be a country club if Stan had resources like that!

Stan has done an amazing job with Renny. I played there back in 98 when it was just getting started and I was not impressed back in those days. Now 10 years later I can see what his vision was. Renny looks amazing!!!!

And I'm not sure if those wood pieces will be fill or not. We may use them for directional signs for next tees and what-not.

I see Mela was involved, he better do it right his peers are watching!

That photo was taken back in the early 2000's when the Saturday afternoon Wolf Pack at Veterans Park was highly attended. Ace pot was over $1000 that day which explains the size of the field. I think there were 21+ people there that day and the round lasted approximately 4.5 hours! I was lucky enough to draw the 19th position so after all eighteen holes pushed, I got to pick the ctp throwers. Worked out nicely, too.......even though it cost me about $38 to buy into the ace pot (one had to be fully vested for 100% payout), my small team won the 19th hole CTP and we each walked away with $67! Johnny....if I remember correctly, I think you might have been on that small team. :D

Nice looking disc golf hole. Does that skinny tree on the right prevent a right-handed thrower from throwing a wide hyzer? (And basically force a straight shot to the peninsula)

if i recall correctly, that's not a peninsula but a true island hole with a bridge and everything. that pic makes it look a lot longer than it really is.

I can see on the tee sign that it says 315 ft, so it's probably like 290 to clear the water, right?

Which is why I ask about the tree - if available, it would probably be fairly straightforward to throw a wide hyzer with a driver on to the island. But if you have to throw straight at it, I'd like to use a midrange disc, but that's at the upper range that I'm comfortable throwing a midrange.

A pretty intimidating hole. Played it in the Barnett Park 08 tournament. Got a 2 and a circle 4. Threw overhands so never even saw that tree when I was playing it! Just saw a LOT of water! Yup, a true island (with a bridge). Saw MANY shots hit the island only to roll back into the OB water. Yup, just about 290' to clear but that's to the closest 'dry land'; the island's an oval and a bit wider than it is deep. Bring wind into the equation and... Nasty.

Jeff it is 290 to clear the water. I'm not sure if the tree was in the way of a big hyzer or not since I was throwing sidearm. This ended up being my best hole of the tournament carding 2 birdie 2's!!! WOOHOOO!!

And yes it is a true island green, and it is a fairly long shot to make it to the island.

The following images are from the 2009 Timberlink Open in Ligonier, PA. This Fly 18 course was installed in 2007 atop the existing par-3 exective ball golf course. Course par is 55 and each hole includes two sets of disc golf tee in addition to the original golf tees. Greens and bunkers are O.B. Recreation tees are beginner friendly. Course is located across the road from Idlewild, a family amusement park plus water park. Perfect place to drop off mom and the kids while dad enjoys a round of cart golf. :)

In the last pic, it looks like Jim Myers is using a cane. Did he have some past physical problem. Sure couldn't tell it as he came within a stroke of the GM title.

Dan Sauers & J Gary Dropcho, two of the three Deer Lakes course designers, building walls in preparation for another concrete pour this Saturday! All in all, this par-66 gem of a course is going to have a total of 54 concrete tees (5' x 13'). We're getting close to completion!

And in case any of you were wondering, the bench near the basket will be removed. :)

This dude is THE MAN! I really enjoyed watching him play the USDGC this year in the last round with Jesper Lundmark, Justin Jernigan, and Blaine Kinkel. One smooth form from years of refining his skills.

Everybody went wild and gave him a huge celebration after he crushed a drive over 5's water hazard squeaking it onto the peninsula ish area.

The following images were taken during the summer of 2009 at a super-secret, undisclosed location somewhere in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This privately-owned course is currently under construction with only the front nine designed/installed at the time of this posting. Keep your eyes and ears for an upcoming tournament announcement within the next year or two.....the tournament will probably be your only opportunity to play this gem of a disc golf course! :)

Hmmmmm...is there an Echo Lake in the PGH area?

Nice looking area - but I would hope the Course designer would NOT put a permanent basket location 15-25 feet (hard to tell from picture) from a bench, and a fairway that threw over at least 4 benches. :(

Unless of course being a private course the benches take the place of trees and never have people sitting on them. :)

Since it is a private course, I doubt the benches and baskets would be used at the same time.
