On behalf of the Pittsburgh Flying Disc Society, I want to apologize for the lack of information on our website about our upcoming National Tour event. We are going through a transitional phase as a club and have run into a couple issues. None the less the majority of us are doing everything we can to make this the best event Pittsburgh has ever hosted! The 2011 Scholls Bicycle Centers Pittsburgh Flying Disc Open is currently taking registrations. Please visit the Official SBCPFDO website at the link below. It is a very good idea to register now. You will notice that each division has its own preset maximum players. If you want to be sure to get in the division you want register early. The player packs for the AMs are looking pretty sweet and our courses are in great shape too. After the Pro finals we will be having the players picnic as always. See you there!

Last August, volunteers from the Pittsburgh Flying Disc Society put the final touches on a disc golf course at Deer Lakes County Park. The course has over time attracted much attention, becoming a top ten-rated course in the country (according to www.dgcoursereview.com) and increas-ingly popular with local recreational players.

This year, the PFDS will host some of the worlds best players at its Scholls Bicycle Centers Pittsburgh Flying Disc Open, which for the first time comes to Deer Lakes. You can be a part of this prestigious Professional Disc Golf Association National Tour tournament by sponsoring a hole for $50. Your sponsorship, for which your name will be prominently displayed on that holes tee sign during the tournament, will help us make this event better for players and spectators. It will also link you or your business to such an exciting event at one of the worlds best disc golf courses.

If anyone is on the fence about signing up for the Scholl’s Bicycle Centers Pittsburgh Flying Disc Open this year, I just wanted the AMs to know that the player’s package will be well worth the entry fee. This is what you will be getting so far, and a few more items are in the works!

Innova or Discraft Disc w/ logo of Champion quality or better
32oz Nalgene style Water Bottle w/ logo
Golf Towel w/ logo
Pittsburgh Flying Disc Society sticker
Player’s picnic after the final round at Knob Hill
Closest to the Pin Contests, etc
A chance to watch the World’s best Players play for the biggest purse the PFDS has ever offered!

Due to the pro side being a National Tour Event, we had to make the Amateur side an A tier. Meaning it draws more people from further away and creates some really good competition. A tier basically means that you have to be a current PDGA membership to play. Membership to the PDGA has some nice privileges and also shows your support for the organization that is really pushing and promoting our sport. Thanks for your time.

Layouts have been finalized, baskets have been moved and all three courses (Deer Lakes, Knob Hill and Moraine State Park) are now set up in PFDO configuration. Get your practice on. The big dance is just around the corner. ;)

I'm looking for about five people to help for the morning and/or afternoon rounds on certain holes for which blind/controversial OB or lost discs are a possibility, such as Holes 3,6,8,13,and 18. Your role would be to use your best judgment to identify where a disc was last in bounds and to let players know when a hole is clear to throw. Also, I would appreciate help with a couple other smaller tasks, such as verifying scorecard math is correct.

If you can help, please confirm by emailing me at [email protected] or calling me at 412-450-0705. All spotters will meet at 8:40am on Saturday morning (immediately after the players' meeting) in Anglers Pavilion to get any last-minute details. If you have a preferred hole among 3,6,8,13,and 18, let me know and I'll try to accomodate. I'll also try to change up the hole assignments for morning and afternoon rounds.

Thank you for your help. I hope to see you Saturday!

Vince,

The spotters would be used on holes#6, 8 and 18 for OB lines.

The spotters would be used on holes#3 & 13 for blind shots/lost discs.

There is no additional OB on holes#3 & 13, correct?

Hole 13 has an OB hillside below the dogleg. Very steep slope. Excellent hole for a spotter.

Very productive day at MSP today. Most of the course is now cut and the park maintenance crew focused on laying gravel. We now have a gravel walking path from 17s green to 18s tees (all the mud and roots are covered). Gravel was spread around the tee areas of 18 and we raised the rubber Flypads on 13 blue, 18 blue and 18 white. We even layed gravel beneath the drop zone Flypad on hole 18. Park crew will be back tomorrow to fill-in eroded areas around select tees throughout the course and they plan to remove a few large patches of briars in key locations. Lakeview DGC looks like a country club right now. It will surely make someone's "favorites" list this weekend.

Thanks to KB Clark, Josh Deily and Tom Stephenson for coming out to work on the course. Much appreciated.

I'm tired. :)

Yes, except on 13 there is OB as Jerry mentioned, but it's not blind like the others potentially are. Also, someone mentioned it might be useful to have a spotter on 15 to save a couple unnecessary provisional throws, and maybe to identify where an errant throw to the right lands. Any reason you ask?

Just curious on whether additional OB was added.

One of the things that I love about many world class courses and especially the Pittsburgh courses is that they are fortunate to have the land available as well as a master designer behind them to achieve their world class challenge primarily without the use of OB, natural or artificial. Frankly, despite how cut and dry OB situations are supposed to play, I observe that we get nothing but headaches from strange situations and rulings that arise from them. Every Pro Worlds seems to get worse in this regard, and being involved with scoring and in close contact with the Marshals and the PDGA Tour Manager, I hear about all of them. The situation is also compounded by players who try to argue their way out of rulings even when the answer is typically common sense and/or spelled out explicitly in the tournament program.

Sorry to make a short story long, but the bottom line is that the less OB, the better. http://www.pdga.com/discussion/images/icons/icon14.gif

Well the A pool (Open Men & Pro Women) is full and the board is set up, the B pool (Pro Master, Pro Grandmaster, & Advanced Men) is also full and board is set. We still have some room in the C pool(Intermediate, Recreational, Advanced Masters, and any AM women division). Come out to Knob Hill on Friday after1PM to check in. There will also be a NT Pro clinic with some of the top pros. Check the PFDS calander for detail.

Great weekend.

Here are a few things that I think we can improve on next time.

1. No driving from course to course on Sunday.
2. No 8:00 start times.
3. Signs directing people to the parks.
4. A few pin placements on the par 3's at Moraine were perhaps in too hard of positions and did not yield a good scoring spread.
5. No Ams in the finals, that way the awards can be done quicker.

These are a few of the valid complaints that I heard that are easily remedied. Any other ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I just wanted to say thank you to the entire PFDO staff and all the volunteers who made the weekend what it was. There were many familiar faces who were not playing to ensure the weekend went smoothly and I appreciate it! I am sure you all didn't hear enough thank you's after the event, but just know it was the best PFDO yet! You will never please everyone as hard as you try so I hope you let the negative comments you heard not overshadow all the great things your club did.

I hope you all are getting some much needed rest....

1. it was the only way to get in all 3 courses
2. again.. only way to get in all 3 courses, worked out perfectly
3. would be nice to have a volunteer do this. any suggestions?
4. the scorecards show otherwise. The Par 3s at moraine ranged from 2s to 5s. with a good # of each. The short places usually split 50/50 with 2s and 3s. = less range or spread
5. Guess that will be up to the TD
Overall I agree though 3 courses in 2 days was too much. Will be fine with it going back to knob and Moraine.

Elaine King of Durham, N.C., throws her disc during the Flying Disc Open at Knob Hill Park in Marshall on Sunday afternoon.

The North Hills attracted a national sports group for the three-day Scholl's Bicycle Centers Pittsburgh Flying Disc Open sponsored by the Professional Disc Golf Association.

The local event was one of eight on a national tour.

Starting Friday, men and women disc golfers began competing for the title of Pittsburgh Flying Disc Open champion and $15,000 in prize money.

The tournament was played on the Lakeview Course at Moraine State Park in Butler County, the Knob Hill Community Park at Marshall and Deer Lakes Park in Frazer. The final round was Sunday at Knob Hill.

The object of the game is for players (arranged in groups of four) to throw discs into buckets. There are 18 "holes" in each round.

Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc, or Frisbee.

According to the Professional Disc Golf Association website, the sport was formalized in the 1970s and shares with "ball golf" the object of completing each hole in the fewest number of throws.

A golf disc is thrown from a tee area to a target which is the hole. The hole can be one of a number of disc golf targets, the most common being an elevated metal basket. As a player progresses down the fairway, he or she must make each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw landed.

J. Gary Dropcho, who serves as course superintendant for the Pittsburgh Flying Disc Society, said 187 people competed.

Rounds were played at each of the three courses on Friday and Saturday. The top 72 players made the finals for the Sunday competition, Mr. Dropcho explained.

Mr. Dropcho said participants, who he said were some of the top players in the world, came from as far away as California, Arizona, Washington, Texas, Michigan, Iowa, New York and Florida.

There also were about 25 people from the Pittsburgh area.

Almost all the top winners were out-of-towners. But Mr. Dropcho of Pine placed third in the grand masters professional division for men over 50, and Tim Foley of Pittsburgh placed third in the men's intermediate amateur division.

Mr. Dropcho has been involved for each of the 23 years that the tournament has come to the Pittsburgh region but said this one was special.

"It was a lot of fun. This one went very well. We had the highest number of participants we've ever had in Pittsburgh," he said.

I guess Deitz wants to go back to using only Knob Hill for the PFDO. Yeah...bring back the flights, baby....where no one can practice the course during the three hour rounds and the last flight of the day has a really good chance of finishing their round in the dark! Oh wait....when running four flights a day, you kind of have to start at 8:00 am (or earlier). So much for next year's improvements....

None of the things I listed were things I thought of. These were the main complaints/suggestions I heard from the other players that were here. Things that seemed like they could be easily remedied.

As for pins at Moraine. I liked all except 7,11, and 13

7 is a good pin for the blue tee, but after the long par 5 hole, it would be nice to have a chance for an easy 2.
11...I really do not like this new pin. I don't think it is visually appealing from the gold tee and I imagine that there were very few 2's from gold. But the more I play this hole, the more I am upset with the way we designed it. Could be reworked into a better hole I believe.
13....the pins outside of the woods are ok, but a nice drive can easily kick a tree near the pin and roll 100 feet away. When it is in the woods there are no obstructions at the end of the discs flight.

I had no problem with the tee time. Perhaps tee times would be nice?

Flights were cool. We used to raise a TON of money with the bike throw.

I vote PFDO at Knob, Linbrook and Old Economy

Signs to the course...one person told me this was like a C-tier without signs to the park. While I don't think it made it a c-tier, I do think that some signs would be cool, and maybe attract some spectators.

Ams not playing finals. Most ams last year and this year were upset to be playing finals and wished that they could watch the pros play the finals. Having no ams playing the finals would get more spectators as well. And we could do the am payout earlier since we would not need to calculate their scores for the finals and it would make the payout go more smoothly.

Like I said, all things I posted were things that were commented to me. I could care less what we do next year or who runs it. These were just a few things that came up that seemed like they could be easily addressed.

Now things we can't improve on are:
No Scuba diver on 15...and no we can't make the spotter go in the water.
