What is going on with the PDGA website and message board?

It always takes a long time to load this website (it frequently times out) and even longer these days to load up the discussion board.

Is anyone else noticing this?

Does anyone have an explanation about what is going on? Is it a "feature" of Drupal? Is it going to be fixed any time soon?

i don't care for the sound either, not everyone has a 'mute' button they can push instantly, most people have to click a few places to get to the volume control.

The whole site is moving slow lately as well, not sure if its related or not.

Ive noticed it too

yes, the website is now moving very slow, and it wasn't the quickest before... hope pdga splurges on the technology needed to speed things up on here...

Yes, the site is SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW.

As for the traffic, most have moved over to Face Book. No membership required to post and much easier to access, especially with FB mobile. This site is great for checking on Tournaments, ratings and other things but for conversation or just staying in touch with other golfers FB is where it is at now.

The PDGA hasn't kept up and just the traffic alone shows that.
Just look at the bottom of the discussion board at any time and compare the registered users to the guests. When guests want to chime in they go to FB.

Worse and worse. It's particularly frustrating when trying to transfer within the site, as when looking through the Tour Calendar or a set of Board meeting minutes. Most of the time the system half (or totally) hangs and you're spending most of your time staring at ads. Maybe that's what they want.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I helped broker the initial agreement with Ciphent in 2008. Now I cringe whenever I look at what has become of our website. One important feature of that agreement is that the Board (not Ciphent) retains ultimate control of website content. So the Board, if it cared, could alter the quantity and nature of the advertisements. I wonder if they realize that.

I never have any problems at all, except when the board was down for maintenance the other week.

I've just spent 5 minutes doing a like-for-like compare clicking around the bbc.co.uk site and this one, and there's no appreciable difference in load times.

Maybe the flavour of internet we get over here is better :)

Slow is an understatement.
While attempting to make this post, the site dumped me.
Had to start over and reenter.
Those free sites (Southern Nationals, DGR and DGCR)
leave this sad bored in the dust.

As the PDGA moves to a new tour manager over the next 2 months, Dave Gentry will be transitioning into his IT position in which he will manage increased investment in the PDGA website and other IT initiatives. He may already be doing some serious retooling of the PDGA website which could be the cause for some occasional downtime and slowness in the past few weeks. I don't know, but a novel idea might be to contact Dave directly to ask him? But of course, that's never as easy as creating yet another whiner/complainer thread on the DISCussion Board, of which said threads increasingly (and bizarrely) include lots of arguably non-constructive criticism from a former BoD member.

Hey Jeff. I started this thread mostly to find out if other people were experiencing the same issues that I have been. I'm not a former BoD member but I guess you might view it as a non-productive criticism. I'm just tring to figure out whether anyone else is having the issue (apparently lots of other folks are having an issue too) and to see if Gentry was aware of it. It has gotten better in that I haven't timed out trying to start up the discussion board, but it is still taking a LOT longer than it should.

Sorry to have polluted this message board with non-productive questions. I shall try to limit my non-productiveness in the future.

Jeff's post is a bit indirect, which might lead to suspicion of innocent parties. I am almost certainly the former Board member to whom he refers.

My apologies, Peter; I should have said former BoD member AND Communications Director to ward off any "suspicion of innocent parties."

I don't know who kicked your dog or whizzed in your Cheerios, Peter, but it's just bizarre to see someone who has played in a bazillion PDGA events, was World Champion for how many years in a row, formed a Senior Committee, and obviously cared about the PDGA and the growth of the sport of disc golf so much to run for and serve on the Board of Directors, now publicly picks nits on an ever increasing basis over such trivial things as water bottle sponsorships, posting of BoD minutes, the website performance or lack thereof, etc.

The regular cynicism from the normal cast of characters is one thing, Peter, but it's just downright depressing seeing it coming more and more from you. :(

I have a strong distaste for the griping and whining and PDGA-bashing I often read.....but I think those griping about the PDGA website have a legitimate gripe. Now, I don't know much about web design beyond simple websites, but from the user end this is one of the slowest and buggiest places I go on the internet. For me it's one of the core functions of the PDGA, and I sure hope the problems get solved at some point.

Who is the new Tour Manager?
I don't think they've necessarily filled the spot yet (I imagine they'd have made a formal announcement if they had). But considering they posted the job opening with a projected start date of March 7, I imagine we'll find out soon enough.

Plus there will be a new member manager as well since the previous one stepped down. So looking forward to seeing who made it through the vigorous process for both positions.

Jeff, I have to agree with the crowd that you are over-apologizing yet again. The DISCussion board performance is simply terrible, and has been for a long long time. There's no denying that, and trying to write it off as "more of the same whining" is disingenuous.

Accessing or posting on this site with any consitancy has become a JOKE!

Just getting pages to load remind me of dial up days. I'm all over the internet everyday and this is the worst performing site of any I have ever seen. Half the time it won't even load or times out trying to load a simple page.
Just plain worthless!!!!!!!!!!!

Check out the performance now. They did some tweaking on the new server this morning and it should be working much better. There's still a snag being able to see event round ratings if you're using IE. However, the "Show Ratings" link does work with Chrome and Firefox.

Maybe he noticed things while on the BoD that the general public has no knowledge of and feels a need to bring light to such issues?

The fact he seems to criticize the PDGA after being a BoD member makes me think there is a lot of inefficiency within the organization and the way it is operated.

Don't bother fixing the current site... put your time and money into a mobile/smart phone friendly site. Most of the time all we want to see is registration lists and round ratings.

I've received two timeouts trying to load up the Discussion board this morning and once instance where the main pdga website page didn't complete its loading.

I timed a couple of my typical operations. 25 seconds to load the Tournament thread and about 15 seconds to pull up the TS-US Masters thread. It took another 15 seconds to go back to the tournaments thread again.

I did notice that early this morning (6:00 am CST) that it seemed to be "fixed" but it has slowed to a crawl again for me.

First off, not whining, just want to throw my facts in...

Fresh instance of Firefox. Typed www.pdga.com/discussion/, 43 seconds to load (not normal, but something happened?!). Checked my current downlink speed, 61Mbps (yes "61", it's fast!). Opened another tab and reopened the discussion board, 13 seconds.

Other sites...
dgscene.com - less than a second
dgcoursereview.com - less than 2 seconds
playfantasydiscgolf.com - less than 3 seconds

One more time at www.pdga.com/discussion/ - 9 seconds
pdga.com/tour_schedule - 18 seconds

Transferring from the discussion board to the "member search" page - 15 seconds

maybe with all the extra $10 the pdga is stealing - from it's paid members who take the rules test this year - they can invest in a real website IT person who will maintain/upkeep the board and make the tweaks it takes to make a board run efficiently...in 2011 it is sad that this board has any delay and i have a fiber optic connection...
