Any update on the courses down at Jack Brooks?!
All the courses are mapped out. Big workday this saturday to get some more teeboxes poured. Also 97 people signed up already as of saturday. So don't wait or you will be left as the crying little kid that didn't heed the warnings. Sign up or Staff. Two great options to be part of this tourney. (I guess option 3 would be be caddying for Matt Hall, but most wouldn't consider that a viable option)

252 to be exact. Trying to fit a larger MPO field this year. Lots of other cool this happening around this tourney as well. There will be a big players party at the Greyhound Park down the street:
On March 31st DG ProShop & Birdshot are teaming up to bring you the biggest Ace prize to hit Texas Disc Golf, ever. Please join us for a pre-Texas States Party at Gulf Greyhound Park, just down the street from Jack Brooks Park on Thursday night. The party is open to anyone competing at Texas States and their families and friends.
Between the races 100 disc golfers will have the opportunity to throw for a $10,000 hole-in-one across the greyhound track pond. Entry into the DG ProShop/Birdshot $10,000 Hole-in-One Challenge will be limited to registered players at Texas States. We will have sign-up details available soon.
If you're in town, join us for disc golf, dog racing, food, drinks and more before the tournament begins. Wed love to see you.

Thanks for that. Somehow I think limiting the division to 30 players at an NT would have not been well received....especially when one day B-tiers in the state pull that many MPOs.
A-tier cool.....NT/A-tier....Pro and ADV divisions only although I don't mind the Int division being offered.
Basically we get stuck a playing sub-par temporary course when it isn't necessary. You can still have 3 pools just have the A-pool play the best 2 courses.
Sorry for that but there was a big discussion in Waco about why tournaments always involve having to birdie (2) almost every hole just to place well. It was more depressing than just that when we talked about the avg course and how they get about being installed with the best intentions but not the best planning.
BTW the 100 player raffle is a pretty sweet idea/fundraiser

Matt, if you had looked at the schedule/pools you would see that the A Pool doesn't play the temp course. The JB boys have been box building bulldogs, I know they knocked out a bunch yesterday.
Time to see this glass half full.
Come in early and walk away with $10M Matt.

Well that is a good thing! That is assuming that the temp course isn't as good as the Meadows/original course.
The post earlier was basically venting frustration from the last 4 tournaments being on courses where you need to shoot at least -7 per round to place well. Throw and putt often favors those who can putt more than those who can throw and it would be nice to have holes challenge all aspects of a person's game.
Feeling like you have to birdie every hole gets old real quick.
chris vandagriff
Feb 28 2011, 09:31 AM
concrete is in on about half of both permanent courses and the pads themselves came out great, there has also been alot of changes as far as tee placement on the original course making it more fun and challenging. holes 3, 12,13,14 and 18 are not just longer but have different (and better) lines.alot more risk/reward. 7 down is possible, but you'll feel like you did somethin' if you come in with a 47.

48 open slots. 34 are reg'd and there are 10 reserved for touring pro's until saturday. FPO is at 7/8, MPM is full, MPG at 14/20, FW1 at 1/4, MA1 at 36/44, MG1 at 7/8, MM1 full at 12/12, MA2 at 29/32....
johnbiscoe
Mar 08 2011, 09:31 PM
48 open slots seems pretty slim for a NT... filling pro divisions while there are still am spots available also seems kind of counter to the idea of the NT.
i know this sounds like i'm bashing the tournament but that is really not the case...it's your event to do with as you like and is obviously successful from the total player numbers...
i'm more curious how the georgia mafia wound up making an event with a history of moderate open fields a NT to begin with...

i have run a ton of events and understand "constraints" in terms of both demand and necessary economics... what i really don't understand is how the event could be considered for NT status with a maximum open field of 48...
again, i'm not bashing the event, it is obviously above and beyond anything i've ever done or would consider doing- i'd like to hear from the georgia mafia...

We were asked to consider this event to become an NT. This is year 16 of this event and has a pretty decent reputation, so we don't want to completely change the formula, but we did add 12 MPO spots to make it the biggest division and took them straight from the Ams that have been such big supporters of the event for many years. We would love to have an unlimited potential MPO field, but without running tee times and starting on wednesday it just isn't feasible.

You could just decide to no longer crown a Recreational State Champion......
Either that or........Make the pools Int/rec, Adv/Age protected pros(GMs and such), and MPO/FPO/MPM in the A-pool
I am not sure why the event was bumped up to an NT but it is close to home and that part is nice. The last time it was an NT it was towards the bottom of the list in payout/players compared to the others and I assume this year will be no different. Basically if you expect 90 MPOs you are going to have to look elsewhere.
My registration was sent in earlier today since I could never figure out exactly how many spots were left in MPO and was real scared of it filling.

Hell if the MPO's dont sign up or wait until the last minute then they should be left out. They are NOT special so get signed up. everyone has they same amount of time to get registered. MPO should be treated just like all the other divisions.

MPO's are the best. The only reason you have an NT is to attract more OPEN players.
I'm sure after this year, Houston won't host an NT again.
More room for the Am's in 2012, it all works out.

The only reason it's an NT is because for 16 years it has been a very successful tournament. What happens when we cater to the pro's and hose the ams and then the next year it's not an NT? We have tried to compromise to make this the best for everyone that wants to be involved.

I think Am's wouldn't mind being hosed after a long day of frisbee golf. It's dirty in the rough. :)

ATTENTION!!!!!!!!! This is important, so pay attention! Jake, Neal & myself have been conferencing on this & here's what's going to happen. Instead of re-opening online registration for pros on Disc Nation on the 19th (after the touring pro deadline to get registered) all players wanting to play in the Open divisions must contact me...Billy Gilbert gbmugwump@aol.com or at 832-659-8449....to either register or be put on a waiting list for those divisions. As of today, we have shuffled the pool around a bit to allow more FPO spots....so if you are interested in playing in that division ladies, contact me ASAP! There are still a few Pro Grandmaster spots available & two spots each for both Advanced & Recreational women....everything else is full & a waiting list has already started. Anyone wishing to get on the waiting list must contact me (my life is about to get crazy!)...all online registrations will shut down on Disc Nation on March 28 (if we don't fill before then). On Tuesday March 29th I will start calling people in the order they got on the wait list to fill any remaining spots. If we have players drop out before tournament day I will be contacting all players in each division on the wait list in the order they came in to see if you still want in. There's also always a possiblity of no shows on the day of the event....if you are on the waiting list & want to come out & take your chances of that happening, then be there. If you don't get in, we can always use your help as a volunteer for one of the biggest tournaments the Houston area has ever had! Hoping that we can work it out that the other FW2 currently will move down to FW3 since she doesn't have a rating yet. That would make for two cards of 3 in FW3 and would help with pacing and give them a bigger division. So keep the faith brother. Together we can make this happen.

When she's unrated and most likely signed up for INT just to get a spot? Kristina is moving up to open, and so there is a two division gap, so it's seems like FPO or FW3 is the way to go. So the ones that should move up are.

OK, I see that there are two courses at JBP, Cedar Hills and Gulf Meadows. But we are playing "Valley", Meadows, and "South". What are South and Valley? Is Valley actually Cedar Hills? What are South and North? Is there a way to figure out what these courses are? Please list which holes are on the South and North courses if those are in fact different layouts of the two courses. If not, is there a link to a course layout for them?

There are two courses that are always there, Meadows and Cedar hills. The Valley course is a new temp course to help keep the pools large. The sunday rounds are played on a combination of those three courses. I'll see if I can find the config for sunday, but i haven't seen a final layout yet.

Heads up: The schedule, i.e. divisions per pool, posted on the texasstates.org site will almost certainly be changing from what was posted there as of 3/24 morning.
Saturday
"Hills" is the 18 permanent holes on the Cedar Hills course plus three temp holes.
"Meadow" is the 18 permanent holes on the Gulf Meadows course plus three temp holes.
"Valley" is 21 temp holes.
All Saturday rounds are 21 holes, shotgun starts.
Sunday
"South" is the "Hills" 21 holes plus three more temp holes.
"North" is a combination of the "Valley" and "Meadows" holes.
The Sunday round is 24 holes, tee time start.

Anyway I came on here to post that I would be sending in the Officials info on monday......couldn't get the code for a free test until then.

I think we should do what Mighty Matt says, because he talks alot on these message boards, and he should know what's best for our tournament....any howwww... all teeboxes on the Cedar Hills and Gulf Meadows courses are in, and they are sweet! I do believe EVERYONE will enjoy these courses...they are still rough, but they will test your skills...The final pin placements for these courses will be done tommorrow ... I believe the course map links will be up tomm...the final sched will up tomm... Its like an ANNIE movie. I hope Everybody can chill and have a good time. Valley course is gonna be sweet ... for a temp course it still has the Texas States feel..., when will baskets be in ??? We'll see. Late Hills TD:eek:

Whatever......just letting you know that most of the Pro guys like to play the best course twice and only allowing one round on it is a shame since everyone likes to get redemption on a hard course. Not everyone will like any course no matter how good it is and the same will hold true this weekend. Heard a lot about other layouts that were proposed before the Hills course went in and if the design was as good as I was made to believe it is sad to see few of the suggestions taken.
I just hope this will work out better than Victoria but you guys already are ahead when it comes to staffers.

I don't like throwing names out all the time...sorry
Like I said I hope this event works out and I already know it will be the best event for Open players of the whole swing.
Practicing three courses is difficult and I am just voicing how the players who travel to NTs feel. Two good courses are plenty.....and even one at some of the top events.

Mainly because I just decided, Flex start DUBS on Friday starting at 12 noon and last card out at 5:00pm. 20$/team, Divisions: Pro's cash payout, Ams 900+, and Ams <900. Results will be posted by the end of Saturday this year.(we're working on getting better at this stuff) Bring your own partner. No whining cause I don't have time to hear it. We'll be playing the Meadows as most people will be practicing the other two courses. Better hit some birdies.

On review of the contract from the insurance company I just noticed that they gave us an additional 10 spots for the hole-in-one challenge in the AM category. I'm going to have these ten spots available at the park as a fundraiser for Texas States payout. If you missed the deadline and still want to throw be one of the first ten folks to bring me $10 and you're in, ams only unfortunately.

Excellent job, Texas States staff. A well run tourney with very little tourney administration that anyone could complain about.
I do have a question about the last round though...did something get input wrong? Nikko's 72 should be much higher than a 1052. That was a very difficult course in terrible wind conditions. I gotta believe that some element is missing in the equation.

I hadn't looked at the numbers before it was mentioned, but it does seem a bit light.
I know that in 2003, with a smaller field and lower entry fees, we still paid top MPO $1,500 and top MPM $1,000. You math wizards do the homework and see what you come up with.

Is there going to be a write up on this tourney on PDGA.com? There was an article for day one, but then no follow up for the final round. I'd love to hear what happened and how Nikko came from behind to win. We really need to step up the media coverage for these NT events. Memorial was great, but it isn't consistant enough. Thoughts?

FYI, In my experience the PDGA doesn't do the write ups, its up to the tourney to handle that. They write up and send to the PDGA and the PDGA posts to the web. Not saying they shouldn't do a better job of media coverage, just stating how it worked for our A Tier last year.

Anyone can do a writeup about a tournament and send it in for publication. Depending on what else is happening with the PDGA calendar, even lower level 'B' tier events (http://www.pdga.com/pleasant-valley) could get published. Of course, all articles are subject to review and approval for appropriate content.
PDGA members may have gotten spoiled because the Marketing Director was on hand for many National Tour events the last few years and was able to do these writeups. But it's also up to the individual tournament directors to coordinate these things, and when they have a thousand other tournament details to work on, I'm sure that a writeup on PDGA.com is probably one of their lower priorities. And who wants to write a final round and event wrap-up after the fact on Sunday night or Monday when they are totally spent? Sorry to burst the bubble of conspiracy theorists, but I'd be willing to wager that an article didn't written because of sheer exhaustion by the tournament staff, not because 'the poster boy' didn't prevail. That idea is ludicrous, really.
And for those who suggest that PDGA Office employees should be handling these details, I can only imagine the howls of protest if membership money were used to send staff to every single NT to ensure writeups of each day and provide better media coverage. People would cry bloody murder on what a waste it would be and how it keeps paid staff from performing more important tasks at the home office.

Look at the PDGA finances, they can afford it, we want this sport to be more consisent in at least the NT and majors in the department of marketing/media, this is where we need to do it... We have plenty of paid staff including a position that is responsible for all these tournaments, especially major ones to be doing this kind of thing. If the PDGA really does not have someone responsible for the media part of all the major/NT tournaments, then we need one, and I want it....

For my upcoming A Tier in December (Fly Ink Open) with over $4000 in added cash to Open (shameless plug), I am going to assign a resource as the Media Director to do just this thing. Do PDGA.com write ups, blog/facebook about the event as its going on, post on the boards, etc. I actually like this better as it gives me a chance to control my own message.
