As far as I know everything will be the same, including the raised baskets. Haven't heard of anything else yet about changes for the actual courses but that is Dano's area.

Our current registration is now at 93 for the National Tour side and 101 for Am's on the A-tier side! We will be updating the registration list twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays. If you don't see your name after signing up give it a couple of days. Be sure and sign up quick though, more than half full for Am's and almost half full for Pro's!

We have now closed online registration but are taking people on the wait list through pdgasignup.com. Just sign up as you normally would but know that your card won't be charged unless we get you in. Already have a few on there and I did squeeze in a bunch in 2010 so get on "The List" and you may have a chance to play one of the best events you will play all year!

I can not wait for this. It is something I look forward to every year as a way to unwind from all the work we put in to run the GCC here in Vegas. Thank you to Keith and all his staff that make this such an enjoyable event every year. I think the set up of finishing in Fountain Hills should be great, especially with all the festivities on Saturday......wait, is there a Dukes in Fountain yet....

OK. I searched the PDGA site for about 10 minutes and cannot find how to take the NT Proficiency Exam...which is now the same as the Certified Officials Exam...right?

So...200 PDGA Pro Memorial players need to pass this exam in about 3 weeks, but it isn't up yet...right? Also, all the TD for other PDGA events before the Memorial needs to take this exam ASAP, but it isn't up yet...right?

Just secured a block of rooms at the Comfort Inn Fountain Hills! Toured the place and it is nice, with a fridge and microwave in every room. Not to mention a FREE full hot breakfast every morning and FREE wifi!

It's just down the street from Fountain Hills DGC and they have a shuttle to take you to the course or wherever else around Fountain, like the Casino maybe? With everything wrapping up on Saturday in Fountain Hills, I think this will be the place to be.

The rate is $112.99 per night for king or double queen rooms and roll-a-ways are available too. Just call 480-837-5343 and mention the Memorial Disc Golf Tournament to get this deal!

Keith;

Are you getting PDGA membership renewal info from PDGA direct or do you have to wait for them to post? There is still 27.46% (53) ams and 33.83% (66) open players not current with only one week left. How many are on the waitlists? If someone hasn't signed up on a waitlist yet do you think they stand a chance at getting in?

Just curious.

Discraft_Keith
Jan 24 2011, 02:12 PM
We do have to wait for the PDGA to tell us who is current and who has passed the test. The Am side has a smaller wait list then the Pros for sure. I would say anyone who signs up online for the wait list could have a pretty good chance of getting in. It is crunch time and folks like to wait to the last minute so you never know.

Keith;

I am really hoping that the layout for the last four holes at fountain that we played for the thrills is how it will be set up for memorial. Hole 16 makes for such a more exciting finishing hole that hole 18. No one needs to say anything else to defend this after how the open division finished this past weekend. Seriously a 402 ft ace to tie for the lead.......insane! I loved it and even though I personally played/putted aweful I can not wait for march!

Keith,

Can you fill in the rest of us that don't know what you and John are talking about with how the layout at the fountain is changing please?

I'm looking forward to playing 2 rounds there and I'm wondering how the layout will change if you end on 16 as there isn't much room there to add in other holes without severely making the course more jammed together.

Thanks for the info guys - I agree and had mentioned that to the filming guys while I was spotting on the hole for 6 hours that day - maybe they listened - as there was some great drama with almost every group of Open players - especially with the concrete/grass walkway OB situation (I loved calling those! :) )as if they tried to not be wet, they went across the line the other way - making it a GREAT risk/reward hole.

Can't wait to play in less than a month!

The tee-time posting option isn't working on the PDGA site right now. A quick fix was attempted for the Am weekend of the GCC, but it really didn't work. We had to post tee-time on our local website, and will likely have to do the same thing Pro weekend.

Looks like around $9,000 added to the GCC pro payout...if the Pros buy some plastic!!!

It would be interesting to hear the rules discussion they had regarding Barry's shot on hole 5 that was caught and dropped inbounds by the spectator protecting his car. Looks like if the guy didn't catch it, it would have bounced off the car back inbounds maybe 30-40 feet closer to the pin. I was thinking it could maybe have been called intentional interference where Barry could have had a free do-over tee shot.

Mar 06 2011, 08:09 PM
Yeah and didn't Nate throw his second shot on that hole from OB?

Patrick P
Mar 06 2011, 09:05 PM
I believe they made the right call on the spot as the spectator stopped Barry's drive on 5, it would of smacked the SUV and more than likely come to rest inbounds. However, Barry had the option to rethrow his drive as it was clearly intentional interference. As far as Nate's drive on 5, the announcers were incorrect in stating the particular sidewalk, behind the basket, and beyond as OB. Only the sidewalk left and beyond is OB (see caddybook).

jconnell
Mar 07 2011, 10:10 AM
Yeah, I figured Terry and Dave were mistaken on Doss's putt. It's a tough thing to do, calling the action from a monitor and not being able to see exactly where the players are. Granted, they're visually familiar with the course and I'm not, but I was a bit disoriented as far as which way was which as the camera changed positions. No way I could say for certain which sidewalk that was.

But the Barry thing...I was most disappointed that in a group like that, with former World Champs and US Champs and years of experience, none of them seemed to have a good idea of what to do even after consulting the rulebook. I got the impression that Barry was looking for a way to change/improve his lie (but as stated, didn't take the re-throw or even seem to argue for it). I also got the impression that the others in the group might have thought a penalty of some sort might be in order since he could have gone OB without the interference (though they'd have been wrong).

Hopefully this is something they can improve upon in future live coverage. They had "field" reporters that they cut to occasionally, but I'm pretty sure most of those interviews were pre-taped. It would be great if they've got Crazy and Dave in the booth calling the action, and someone like Terry walking along with the featured card who can fill them in during a situation like that one. Someone who can clue the viewing audience in on exactly what the question or discussion is about on the course. This situation wasn't the only one in which everyone had to guess what was going on, including Crazy and Dave.

In the same vein, keeping the hosts more up to date with the scores on the course would be great. Poor Crazy and Dave were calling the last 3-4 holes of the Masters leaders and had no clue who was leading, only that George Smith was the leader entering the round. It wasn't until George putted out on 18 and raised his hands in victory that we knew. Then there were the last few holes of the lead Open cards where Crazy and Dave didn't seem to realize that McBeth had opened up a 2 then 3 stroke lead, or that Anthon had already birdied 18 and Nikko's birdie was to tie for second, not to move into 2nd alone. Minor thing, but odd to watch the video and know more than the announcers do just by watching PDGA.com's live leaderboard.

All in all though, great to watch live disc golf when there's still two feet of snow on the ground and it's raining.

I think if I were a player throwing Barry's shot that was interfered with, I might have argued for a rethrow citing intentional interference. However, as a marshal I might have felt that it was reflexive interference where the shot virtually landed in the spectator's hands as he reflexively defended his vehicle versus jumping out of the way. Reflexive interference is covered as the last paragraph and photo in the Interference Rules School story: http://www.pdga.com/interference-rule We might need to borrow the video clip of this incident to use as a teaching example for a video version of the Rules Q&A.

Only the sidewalk left and beyond is OB (see caddybook).

if you look at hole 5 in the caddybook, it clearly has the area where Doss putted from as OB. He was beyond the sidewalk left of the hole.

Not that it matters now.... I'm just saying....

Doss was in the grass left of the cement walkway that led to the shelter. Just the shelter and the cement walkway itself were OB according to the caddy book. The main sidewalk that was further to the left was OB but Doss wasn't across that one. You couldn't really have the grass to the left side of the cement walkway to the shelter as OB anyway since that grass area was connected to the main fairway. They would have needed a string line from the shelter to the main sidewalk on the left so it could have potentially been an enclosed OB area. It's weird but apparently if the player went long and across the walkway behind the basket, they were inbounds even though landing on the walkway like Nikko did was OB.

Here's the hole map from the caddy book. I marked what I understand to be roughly where Nate's lie was with an X. Appears to be in bounds to me.

Got it...now... kind of not clear use of the word Beyond in the caddie book... the color however tells it all.

Thanks for the clarification!!!

The PDGALive twitter was doing a great job of updating everyone throw by throw for the women's and men's lead cards on top of all the video...

As for the situation on hole 5, Barry just wanted it where it was, McBeth and Nikko seemed to think there was a penalty involved. The front passenger closed the door to let the disc go by, had the rear passenger not stopped the disc, there was a good chance that disc was going long ob without hitting the suv, but we will never know and the right play was called, play it as it lies. Doss's drive was safe by a foot and yes I agree going over the sidewalk long or the path left should be OB but it's been that way for years.
Personally, I think the biggest discussion should be the wall on hole 1, many players were hitting the wall and according to the rules or whatever, they get to mark their disc as inbounds where it last hit the wall, I think it should be ob since it never really "crosses" inbounds.

The rule for marking an OB shot is where the disc last was over or touching inbounds. If the TD wanted to, he could have said the grass side of the wall was the line so hitting the wall wouldn't be enough to be considered IB. However, that may have had its own issues defining how the line works at either end of the wall. It would also mean more discs would likely be lost on rethrows.

This is closer to what happened. Barry's shot actually almost made the guy sterile. It hit him square on and dropped right in front of him inbounds. The argument was that they thought it was going to carry ob if it hadn't hit him. The added problem of the guy then picking it up, and dropping in literally the same spot added to the confusion.

I have been replaying the Memorial video from discgolfplanet.tv and really enjoy watching disc golf in this format. I hope this helps to broaden more events in the future to be filmed. I would espicially like to see all Major and NTs events on live broadcast. It would be espicially great if a disc golf video game was created that incorporates actual courses with real run-time events, so video gamers can play alongside Pros in actual events with live score updating.

I realize there is tremendous amount of work that goes into live broadcasting and I'm sure the team is looking at ways to make improvements on their next broadcast. I think it would make a great addition if they could add replays, slow motion, and simlutaneously two-angle shots in future broadcasts. Maybe will see a disc golf channel on tv someday. Rather watch disc golf on TV than bass fishing.
