This could spark a large debate, however, I hope not. I am graduating from college this year, planning on going pro next year, and need to move out of the midwest. I would agree with Charlotte or somewhere between Baltimore and Philly. If you locate between Charlotte and Augusta (Greenville?), you're close to both the new NDGC and Charlotte. The west has a few great courses but not many concentrated in a fairly small radius. But DFW or between DFW and Austin gets you reasonably close to some great courses.

Don't let the Texas boys try to fool you. They don't read so well. Your question was "where are the best courses" not the most courses. If you want quantity move to Texas. Bunch of so-so courses and golfers. :DYou could probally thrive there with a 980 player rating.

Now if you want quality no one can touch North Carolina. Charlotte in particular. Toughest public course in the country - Renny and Winthrop Gold 20 minutes south. Plus 3 more championship courses in the city. Quality of players? More 1000 rated pros than any other state. 2 of the last 3 Am Worlds Champions live here also.

Add in Innova East and you know you've got quality merchandise a mere 20 minutes away. Plus you can get on a highway and drive in any direction and hit some of the toughest courses around with the best golfers out there all within a couple of hours.

You'd have to drive at least 3 hours in Texas just to see another longhorn let alone another disc golf course. There's a reason golfers from around the world flock here every year in October. And there's a reason some of them decide to stay.

I think Bowling Green has some of the best variety in just four of there courses.

Hobson Grove, Keriakes, White, and Lovers combined require almost everyshot a player could have. Everything from short overhands, elevation changes, sidearms, and long crushes. Combined with the almost constant wind, it can train you to be a top pro. Especially if you play the OB at White.

Just my two cents.

I have played over 50 courses throughout the East Coast (not just in one secluded area) and I would have to say Charlotte NC is the best area for courses. I agree with a previous poster that Renaissance Park is the hardest course I have ever played. (not necessarily the best) And the other top courses in the area are pretty darn good.

Apr 05 2005, 10:46 AM
My vote goes to the Charlotte, NC area as well. I visited there in Feburary an played many of the courses and had a great time. They ranged from very long to a really, really short course, very challenging to nice novelty courses, and even had 2 that were very confusing for first timers. There are like 15 courses within a 45 min drive of central Charlotte. Eastern Ohio has some really nice courses, but they are not as concentrated in one spot.

Apr 05 2005, 11:36 AM
Well since the original poster said he wanted to get out of the midwest that eliminates the obvious answer of Des Moines. It also eliminates strong contenders Twin Cities, Michigan, and Ohio and anything in the northeast.

Given all that...Charlotte is a pretty good recommendation. But come on guys (rickb) -- 3 championship courses in addition to Renaissance and Winthrop? Cripes where have you played? :p The Raleigh area also has several nice but not outstanding courses and seems to be a pretty nice place to live.

Central Texas is also pretty solid and better weather than Charlotte if you can stand the heat. DFW is nice with Zboaz, Vets, and Lewisville approaching Charlotte with numerous other courses that the NC boyz would apparently call "championship". :D Austin is okay but greatly enhanced by all the private ranch courses just south of the city. Houston is certainly servicable. All offer lots of courses of a reasonable caliber.

Phoneix is a good town and you get used to the boringness of the courses. It would help if the fountain were not messed up.

Lots of other nonmidwest climate type places just seem to be really spread out as far as courses go. Sure Cali has some nice ones and FL too but not too many concentrated spots. :(

If it were me which its not I would live on the south side of Austin. That gets you to Moodys and Circle R and Twin Parks and the allegedly new and improved Circle C. Plus a shortish drive to see the crazy necks at Live Oak. And does the San Marcos co-ed course still exist? :D And then if your bored you can venture into Austin for Round Rock or Pease or Bartholomew or Lago or Rivery. Plus you can't beat the ladies and the nightlife is rockin and the weather is truly year round.

You can't go wrong with Charlotte/Rock Hill. Course Directory lists 84 courses within 150 miles of Charlotte. They span from near the beach to the mountains, with huge variety, including the aforementioned 5-star courses in Charlotte. When the PDGA headquarters is finished, nearby Augusta, Georgia will have at least 7 quality courses, as well.

Plus, there's an event for you to compete in virtually every weekend, year-round. Not to mention the USDGC, right there in Rock Hill, a premier spectator event if you can't manage to play yourself into an invite.

I think we'll discover Mighigan's top 5 might not get MI in the top 10 states. We'll just have to see once the evaluations start coming in. I really think PA has a shot as the state with the highest ranked top 5, especially when you take variety into account. Traveling pros know it and others will soon find out if they head to Pro Worlds this year. They won't get to see the two near Pittsburgh though unless they stop along the way.

I'm not as familiar with other states as I am with Pennsylvania, so I can't comment on them.

But as the person who (to my knowledge) has played the most courses in Pennsylvania, which is 26, I'll agree with Chuck's assessment. Competitors in this year's Pro Worlds 2005 will get a great look at two outstanding courses at Little Lehigh Parkway and Nockamixon State Park, and two courses that are almost just as world class - Tinicum Park and Jordan Creek Park. As Chuck mentioned, there are two courses near Pittsburgh (Knob Hill and Moraine State Park) that make my top 20 out of 127 played lifetime around the country. There's also three other courses scattered about the state with stunningly scenic views - IUP College Lodge in Indiana, Prompton Dam in Honesdale (near Scranton), and Codorus State Park in Hanover.

I'm not sure if it would fit your definition of moving out of the midwest (we are a lot warmer though than Wisconsin), but the greater Cincinnati area has a great disc golf scene with 19 courses on the Kentucky and Ohio sides of the river. Idlewild and Mt. Airy are as good as it gets.
see -- http://www.cincinnatidiscgolf.com/courses/index.htm

Also within a few hours of the greater Cincinnati area are Dayton, Columbus, Lexington, Louisville, and Indianapolis.

Tyler can vary from bland mediocrity to world-class depending on the pin positions and the condition of the course - my interest and opinion of it tends to wax and wane along with the course conditions. For a good part of the year, Tyler is in immaculate condition. However, there are times in the late spring when heavy growth can make this course a jungle and the park service (understaffed from budget constraints, Im sure) will get lax with the grass mowing on the open holes and weed-wacking on the wooded holes.

I'll also chime in on the elevated terraces they've recently added to the pin position of a few holes which are very aesthetically pleasing and challenging as well. Ditto for the combining of shorter holes into excellent par four holes.

ck34
Apr 08 2005, 11:35 AM
I'm just referring to the fact that Tyler has been evaluated and currently is one of our top ranked courses of those evaluated (but you wouldn't know that). So, it may not remain at the top once other course evals get completed. We just don't know yet.

Moderator005
Apr 08 2005, 12:18 PM
Actually I do know that, I'm on the PDGA Disc Golf Course Evaluation team. However there's only 18 courses currently rated as well as a concern that we're rating courses too highly.

ck34
Apr 08 2005, 12:28 PM
Sorry, I hadn't seen you post in a while to the Eval group, so wasn't sure. Even given the likely inflated ratings, having played Tyler even before some of the new changes, I think it will still rival the best courses in PA and the country once the evaluations fall in line.

Apr 08 2005, 01:07 PM
Where do you think Idlewild will fall in? Being designed as an 18-hole, pro-par 72 course that challenges even the best to shoot under par rounds, there are several am.s who dislike the course due to its degree of difficulty. For them it's like being little leaguers trying to hit home runs and run the bases in a major league ballpark.. There are also players who've been playign for 25 years who dislike the course because they are so unfamiliar with ever taking a 7 on a hole that has no yellow string. Leaving the course after having shot an 80 or even higher leaves them unhappy.

ck34
Apr 08 2005, 01:22 PM
The design of the course is only part of the score. Not sure how Idlewild does on other factors since I haven't been there for 7 years.

Does Idlewild have shorter cement tees? At Highbridge, we suspect that more players will play rec rounds from the White tees vs Gold tees on our Championship Gold course. It's nice to have a championship course among several rec courses in an area, but the majority of the action will not likely be on the championship course unless it also has nice cement shorter tees for Blue or White level players.

Moderator005
Apr 08 2005, 01:29 PM
Anybody would be unhappy taking a seven on a hole, because currently the highest we have are pro par fives. That's a double bogey 7.

Players that are unhappy about shooting 80 are really just narrow-visioned and entrenched in the "every hole is par 3" mentality. People just don't get that if Barry Schultz and Ken Climo both shoot 65, that could be a 1020-rated round at Idlewild. If in the same round I shoot 75, that's a 961-rated round. For my player rating, that's a good round of golf for me. If in the same round someone shoots 80, that's a 931-rated round. If, for example, that someone has a player rating of 900 or less, that may very well be a hot round of golf for them!

Apr 08 2005, 01:54 PM

Does Idlewild have shorter cement tees?

Yes, there are extra-long cement long & short tees on holes 3, and 14 and permanent long and short pins on 2, 13, and 16. Idlewild has changed immensely since I started playing 3 years ago -- the parks maintenance crew cuts the grass regularly, and the holes have become groomed (thorns and honeysuckle lining the tightly wooded fairways and greens removed which makes finding discs which wander off fairway easy to find), gravel has been added betwen pins, and other improvements have ocurred as well. There is now a "Walk of Fame" leading up to hole 4 where PDGA members may sign their name and numbers on the vertically placed cement cores lining the steps, and an OB wall alongside the creek that defines the beginning of the green on the 1001' hole 15. This year the long pin placement was added for hole 2 where you now have to go across a lake/pond on your second shot to reach the pin for a shot at a birdie.

I would love to play a course like this. I think alot of people like DGolf for recreational play because it's quick and cheap [compared to BGolf]. That could be why some people that have played a while and have become accustomed to 5400-ft par 54 courses are reluctant to see the value in a long, challenging course. The toughest layout I've played in Texas (or anywhere so far) is Crowley, TX gold tees. There are some wacky, long lines that must be hit to shoot a 3, 4, or 5 on some holes. That's what I like when I really want to be challenged.

As for the original post, I haven't played much outside of Texas, so I couldn't give an honest answer. I would say that I would not base where I live just because there are many DG courses nearby. I kind of lucked out in that all along I wanted to live near Dallas, where there were already many courses, and championship ones being installed as we speak. If you know you're going to live in a specific area, I see no harm in looking for a place that is literally minutes from a course. Make sure you've got good, steady work first! If that's not a problem, by all means, move to NC/SC, TX, or wherever!

Too bad we can't get a touring pro to chime in...I'd think their opinions would be the best since they've probably seen the best variety of courses.

I would say that the worst state relative to its population is New York. 20 million people and only 20 courses, of which only about 3 are world class (Warwick, Ellison, and the almost defunct Chili if it doesn't get pulled).

Actually Hawaii is the worst. There's one course in Maui, with rubber tires and wood haging things. That's about it. The other two in Hawaii are object courses where you aim at coconut trees.

Apr 10 2005, 09:33 PM
While not in the national top 5, I think that Portland, OR would be a spot to consider, especially for a recent college grad. Many courses and more going in every year due to excellent backing from the State Parks Department, an increasing involvement in the NT series (Beaver State Fling NT) and a huge player base make the golf side formidable.

Lots of big industry out here for the job market side of things: Nike, adidas, Intel, Columbia, Solomon, Hewlett Packard just to name a few. Check out the scene on odsa.com

I dunno... What about central coast California? Between Monterey and Santa Cruz (about 40 min. apart)... You have Delaveaga, one of the best 27 hole courses in the world, 3 great courses at CSUMB campus in Monterey, Pebble Beach which has 27 holes almost as challenging as Dela, Old Capital, Black Mouse (Felton), Carmel Valley has 2 courses. Dave McCormacks Ozark course was enjoyed by lots of touring pro's, not just his players, at par 71. We just had the St Louis Open and Sioux played over 9300 feet par 68 for 18 holes. I got all compliments from all levels of players from George Smith and Justin Bunnell down to Rec guys in their 1st tourney. I redesigned a bit to accomodate easier flow from pins to tees with more to come before pads go in this fall and will keep the longest pins a minimum of 8500 feet and the shorts around 5500 - 6000. We have such a variety of courses here its sick.

The best state to live in for a disc golfer is without a doubt North Carolina. Between the internationally recognized courses in Charlotte, the National Tour event on the wooded courses of Raleigh and the almost overwhelming numbers of golfers in this state. To top it off, being a Southern State, the climate allows year round play, which is a major plus. Id almost say that North Carolina has two state sports: Disc Golf and Stock Car racing.

Jun 12 2005, 01:46 AM
I have played a couple of the courses in NC (it's been awhile) and found them to be challenging and the scenery was great. I'm sure they have added more and made them even better. TX is also adding more courses with Cedar Hill (x2) and Crawford Park which should dispell the TX image of long dusty courses. These are very challenging and hopefully someday be considered championship courses. We'll see how the PDGA ranking system goes. :D

Toekneej5: I have to say that Bowling Green, KY is a place you should check out. There are currently 8 courses in Bowling Green with two more under construction. Some of the top pros reside in Bowling Green - Rick Voakes, Shawn Sinclair, Juliana Korver etc. Also, there are weekly doubles and handicap rounds that are always competitive. There is a large variety of courses in Bowling Green as well. There are heavily wooded courses (Hobson Groove), short and technical courses (Keriakas), and long courses (Ephram White) to test your distance. You can check out Bowling Green Disc Golf (http://www.bgdg.org) for more info.

Yeah,
I have to second sidearm.
Bowling Green has really got their ducks lined up with Disc Golf. I like their Courses but strangely enough there is none that makes my top 10.

But its just the general feel there that Disc Golf is really growing among mainstream society. Just recently they finished with their 8th DG Course at an Elementary School. Its for kids and families.

Now that is what I call great marketing and effectively growing the game for the betterment of all those to enjoy.

These can be courses best of the best, and other attractions (disc-golf related)... then a courses link to the Charlotte, NC area... Cincinatti...etc.
I can use custom Icon's so I figure there would be link to the courses and tournament's of the PDGA major tournament event's and also charity events....
Any place there was a past years World's event, and a little trivia history on those event's would be awesome.... such as where was the 1986 World's held and who won for example ;)
Give me at least your top 3 major attractions anywhere in the USA and I'll get them added as well as links to club websites, out of this world large disc golf retailer's... you name it!
Thanks for any help on this one.

Horeshoe Canyon in Jasper, Arkansas. This place is the total package. 2 disc golf courses (one easy and the other put a king size spanking on me), hiking, repelling, horseback riding and other cool stuff. They have plenty of cabins for rent and cook your meals for you, just listen for the bell to be rung. This is by far the best disc golf package that I have seen, and can't wait to go back. The website is horseshoecanyon.com if you'd like to check it out. If you need anymore info on it you can post on the Arkansas disc golf room and they'll be glad to help you. They ran an Ice Bowl out there this past year.

Warwick, New York.
Features two courses. One is world class with two sets of tees and two permanent baskets on every hole, which allows you to play any mix of shorter birdieable holes to very difficult par 4 and 5s.The area is especially scenic in the fall with the bright colorful foliage. If you're into camping I'd reccomend Bear Mountain state park which is about 35 minutes away. Or if you prefer staying at a hotel, I'd recommend the Continental situated along the beautiful Greenwood Lake (20 minutes away). There's also some nightlife and neat coffeehouses and bistros with live music in "downtown" Warwick at night.

Also there's Paw Paw WV. Two killer courses on the Thurman Plantation. Call Spence and Gabby in advance to book your "stay". Camping available on the premises. If you're not into roughing it, there's the Paw Paw Patch, a B&B with hospitable proprieters. Or stay in Berkely Springs (20 miles away). I personally can recommend staying at Tari's Cafe in BS. They have sleep and dine specials. They are an upscale restaurant with a few victorian style suites upstairs.

Both of these destinations offer challenging world class golf.(Warwick is host of the 2005 Skylands NT and Paw Paw host of the famous WVO A-tier). Both have camping available on premises or nearby. They both have pampering hotel accomodations if bringing the wife or girlfriend.

Research turns up the Top 10 states w/ the most courses, in case you haven't checked the score lately.....
oops data got DISCombobulated (an hour of work down the drain) :( Anybody know how to work MS excel...lol.
The states on the map will be colored to represent how many courses... 30 states have less then 30 courses currently. [trivia fans]!

thanks for the info!!! Horseshoe canyon sounds good really didn't find disc golf info on that website though... that the place w/ the camel jockey/caddies... if I remember right from seeing the ads?

That's Moab, Utah www.camelotlodge.com (http://www.camelotlodge.com)

I think you might want to include Highbridge Hills Sports Complex in the directory with four 18s and one 9 on one site: www.highbridgehillssc.com (http://www.highbridgehillssc.com)

yeah, I didn't see disc golf on the Horseshoe Canyon website, but did play an ice bowl there. 2 courses like I said, down in the canyon, absolutely awesome to be surrounded by a couple hundred feet of canyon rock wall....until the flood comes through :D

Ty,

Good idea for a thread. I will have to second Chuck Kennedy and say that Highbridge Hills should be included. Highbridge has been under development less than a hear and a half and it's already amazing. The exciting part is going to be watching the place grow and add amenities.

Horseshoe sounds really nice.

Sandy Point Resort and Disc Golf Ranch (an hour South of Highbridge) has 24 holes, sandy beach and a dozen private cabins and it's all nestled inside the Chequamegon National Forest. Very pretty place!

Can you make gas prices go back to $1.00/gallon. I paid about that when I went to Worlds in Nashville a couple years ago. There was a course at some guys house called Stonehenge. Unbelievable! It was the ultimate in custom/tricked out disc golf courses. There was a hole spanning a 150 ft. ravine that had stadium seats in the side of the hill behind the t-pad for players/spectators. That was just one hole. I guess the guy moved on and the course is no longer there....shame!

I don't know if this would count, but I would seriously recommend coming to Hawaii in January for the back to back PDGA events. The courses that get set up are world class, the scenery speaks for itself. First weekend is on Oahu, 2nd weekend is on the Big Island, and you have a whole week inbetween to tour the islands. If I was on the mainland and wanted to do a 1 week disc golf vacation, this is where I'd want to go.

Wisconsin !!!! Within 2 hours of the Milwaukee area you can play numerous great courses. I have played 19 courses in Sconny and have NEVER played a bad one.

Northern California is also another place where you can play many challenging courses, and see many Great Vistic Views while you are playing them or traveling to them. Only draw back is the traffic that you have to deal with. Well worth it though.

Jul 15 2005, 11:44 AM
All good...
Is Camelot Lodge recommended... anyone been there, had a good time?

HighbridgeHills, was on the list, forgot the name though (read the article in the "Disc Golf News" this spring)... Asked johnnie "D" to fill in a post for me... knew that was gonna be his pick for one.

Trip to Hawaii'ld never be a bad thing, the double PDGA events makes it a "Go". Making it @ least a 10-14 day'er, flying all that way for 1 week would be insanity.
What about Innova USA area... do they give factory tour's at all, or is that a guarded trade secret, to see the disc making machine chuggin' away?
Great stuff so far... I think I might even make the toss across the stonehenge ravine... (once in awhile, or fabricate a disc parachute)

Come to the Twin Cities to play the Pro Worlds courses and non-players in your household can live at the Mall of America (MOA) for a few days. The new ski hill course just down the road from MOA opens today with food, snacks plus beer available in the chalet and a beer cart on busy days.

As the designer and course contractor, I'm quite biased, but I haven't heard anyone complain about Camelot.

I've also heard that there will be an article, with photos, in the upcoming DGWN, written by two top PDGA touring pros. I've not seen the article, but suffice it to say that the smiles I saw on the faces of these two were validation enough for me that Camelot is a totally incredible disc golf experience.

Now if that darn magazine would only show up in my mailbox.

New permanent course at the Hyland Hills Ski Area listed under the city of Bloomington in the PDGA Course Directory. Worlds moves from place to place each year. We hosted the Pro Worlds in 2001 on four permanent courses on the east side of the Twin Cities. None are in Worlds configs for daily play but are still challenging, nice courses.

Jul 15 2005, 07:24 PM
I think there's room on my full-screen map, for all of the World's locations since the beginning to highlight as many of those courses as possible, Is there a website link w/ details on all the worlds?
Not sure I can find it on the PDGA site... there's a list for the champions though: [ PDF Here (http://www.pdga.com/documents/ProChampions.pdf) ] this link shows winner's year and city, but not specific about which courses were played...
Oh well getting ahead of myself... gonna add all the World's locations then... sweet...

Shweb mentioned Santa Cruz, if youre in cen to nor california deffenitly go spend a couple days there. great challenging course, awsome scenery, totaly laid back town "surf city USA", great beachs (waters a little chilly untill you get used to it). weathers almost always perfect (warm, but not to hot. no humidity). trust me you'll like the town almost as much as the course... SC 4 LIFE!

Jul 17 2005, 05:11 PM
I would add the ski resorts in Colorado (summertime of course). I've played Aspen and it was a really cool experience ... especially since I don't ski and have never been up a gondola before. I hear they also have a course on top of Vail now ... I'm sure someone from that part of the country can verify.

Since Warwick and Paw Paw have already been mentioned, I will throw in one of my other favorite spots ... the Spotsylvania, VA area. You can play some awesome private courses at The Grange (36 championship caliber holes and 18 'Tiki' holes) and at Hawk Hollow (elevation, scenery, challenge, water, cows ). There is also Loriella disc golf course nearby.

Jul 18 2005, 12:00 PM
If the World's courses used some Temp DGC's feel free to mention some other nearby premier courses... should be room, even if I have to make extra pages for good local details. What's near Tom Bass, that's happening.. or I can just go w/ Tom Bass... I'll do some research once I iron-out the details.... and try to link to local Disc Golf Club webpages, for people to get in-touch w/ the local's for current info.

It doesn't matter what side of Iowa you want to start on you will find courses. DesMoines has the highest profile but if you head east on I 80 you will find Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, the Quad Cities and pass many fine courses along the way. Then you can head south and play all the courses in Southeast Iowa. Several western Ill courses are very close the the Iowa state line just in case you want more.

Well, Nashvilles three courses from 2001 AM Worlds are still alive and kicking. Thats Cedar Hill, Three Rivers, and Seven Oakes !! And the perverts are still running around like chickens with their heads cut off at Cedar Hill Park !!

Its hard to fathom how a progressive and wealthy State like Connecticut has only 6 DG Courses !!

Jul 19 2005, 07:50 PM
Cool discinD the map data's adding up now...
Hot orange states have the most DGcourses(60+), we know who they are... The po' po' manilla colored state inhabitants only have 20 or less courses to go to [where's the cryingSmiley], sure they're working on more though.
goDiscGolf.com Disc Golf USA Travel Highlights (http://www.godiscgolf.com/flash_mx/TravelMap/index.htm) posting the link since it's way back at the beginning...

Any club websites around Nashville or anything to link that up w/not sure I'm finding anything... maybe the main Nashville Visitor Bureau site then, or a parks website?
10-Q mang!
There's still some bogus content on the map, I'll rip that away once I know what I'm doing...lol!#!

It's not hard to fathom when you consider that CT is a rather small state in area and land can be quite expensive. The same problems exist all over the tri-state area around NYC, as well as much of southern New England: very little open land that's available or suitable for use. But it's growing at an incredible rate, so I don't doubt that CT and other northeastern states will have many more courses in the years to come, crammed into every available space they can find.

For how few courses there are in Connecticut at the moment, they are for the most part quality courses. Quality over quantity is definitely a good thing, IMO.

Jul 19 2005, 11:35 PM
Ha Josh, good point !! Did not even think about that.
It makes sense.

Such a beautiful area are up there. I just hope some more Courses can be squeezed in. I can only imagine how awesome it would be to play DG up in NE in Autumn with the leaves changing and all

I know in Tennessee we don't have quite the beautiful Fall days you have. But its still pretty nice down here.

Nothing like playing DG in Oct. with the smell of burning leaves in the air and orange all around /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Jul 19 2005, 11:43 PM
Ha Godiscgolf, its really ashame but Nashville's Disc Golf Club is pretty much nonexistant. The Website is no longer around and it seems to have disbanded. Apparently, a group still keeps the Courses up but there is NO cohesive group of DG ers that would be considered a viable club in Nashville.

This seems to have happened right after the Worlds in 2001.
Plus, the incident a few years ago where TD and other Nashville Club players were visibly smoking some hooters during a PDGA event didn't help the cause.

Its a shame though with a city the size of Nashville and the great courses it has ,it does not have a current DG Club :(

Me says a couple of states are cheating by having a ton of 9 hole courses...LOL. Is there a chance you can rate states by the number of holes they have instead of the number of courses. I'm intersted to see if that changes the state rankings by much.

I have gone to your map and when I click, zoom in and click again, I get some State Senators web site. What gives with that.

Great thread you have going....best in a long time.

Great work!!!

I have to say something:

NJ maybe has the lowest course / pop ration but NJ is actually a hotbed for disc golf because the states right around NJ have disc golf courses right on the state line. So you can take those 7 courses in NJ and add about 15 more in Pennsylvania right near the NJ line, and Delaware, Maryland are right there, and Warwick is actually in NY state but it's about 2 miles from NJ and the majority of the people who play it are from NJ

Jul 20 2005, 11:18 AM
Sorry about the bogus link's and data John D. that's still leftover's from the original map layout demo, it had a contact your senator thing built into it...(you could always contact them, and tell them you want more courses/parks in your state /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif )
Trying to decide whether to leave each state linked to anything at all, no use linking to PDGA course directory, one click and your there anyways... any other ideas?

Hey Hank trying to figure out a few things about your data, is area represented in square miles then... if so that'ld be area/course would represent every X square mi. to a course also?
Excellent job... any more demographic data?

I had thought about the per capita, I may make another version of the map then just strictly to show more demographic data. [later project]
The map will develop slowly, this weekend I'm in a LAF 24-hour DG-a-thon at Upper Sandusky, OH! Sweet little course, I frequently see bald eagles flying nearby...

Thanks, Hank. :)

Jul 21 2005, 11:26 AM
Thanks again Hank,
I barely even noticed you had the 2-tables...
Ther first one ordered by the lowest POPULATION per COURSE,
and the second ordered by lowest AREA per COURSE...
In both cases the states at the top, showing the best results, for anyone having a hard time w/ that :)
Thinking of making that into a demographic's pdf downloadable document, if it's not available elsewhere, I got the full-version Adobe product PDF maker... Have you got that in a word doc or something if you do could you email it... PM me for details if my email's not listed. Maybe I'll make a new demographic map, and call it Golf Geek Info for Disc Heads...lmao, somone's probably got Disc Heads'ld hee hee hee
Tanx Hank

Great work!

Couple of ideas:

Have links to club websites on the map. Make your top 50 destinations a different colored link. Also have a top 10 cities list (again a different color), with the the ten cities that have the most courses say within 30 miles.........Houston, Detroit, Des Moines, Cincinnati, etc.

Jul 21 2005, 01:54 PM
Great ideas... I'm planning a special icon for Past World's hosts... maybe a gold cup w/globe behind it, just hit me put the year right on that...schmackO :)
Is there a graphic used for all of the World's, think it changes every year?
The World's locations may no doubt be some of the places w/ the most courses as well... it's nice that the PDGA got around to building a directory w/ search from zipCode radius... I tried beating them to the punch... Mine was never really finished, had some of the best 18 states though and was up nearly a year or so before the PDGA got the bug's worked out of theirs :)
They one upped what I had, some of my map links esp. for Ohio are as accurate as can be... but now PDGA has GPS points.... nice work guys.
GoDiscGolf.com/find Disc Golf Courses (http://godiscgolf.com/find/) missing a few of the most recent courses added to the states I had completed... it's a relic now.
GoDiscGolf out to Rule the World.... if I could only be a dominating competitive force in the event's I enter.... wouldn't we all...
Thanks NEngle... still can't figure a way to have more text/picture/info show up on the same map page for a point clicked though...

Jul 25 2005, 12:50 PM
Sweet bit of news on the PDGA.com homepage...
They're implementing a course ratings program... courses will be rated 1,2,3,4, or 5 Links (chainLinks)...
Not sure of the details...
Check it Here... (http://pdga.com/course/eval/intro.php)
Sooooo... I can just add all the 5 link courses then...
Have to wait and see, but great work there gang.
They're cooking up new goodie's all the time!

Jul 29 2005, 04:00 PM
Got all my points on the map representing the World's location's of the past 25 years...
Gathering content for best courses things to do in those areas now...
Right off the bat come up w/ a toughie...
Irvine, CA the city course there not sure it was one used in the 1982 World's or not; suspect it was... but... the course is maybe not a premier course by today's standards... so I got shout-out's to Rhett in SOcal for one... happened across Emerald Isle looks pretty cool, ball-golf course also... waiting to hear from Rhett or somebody then... what's up in SoCal Irvine area...
Any other avid DGer's want to take a stab at this or some of the other previous world's locations that haven't been covered yet, give it a go... courses to play, courses played in the event, if known(is there a website of world's history???) other thing's to see and do... give or take couple hundred mile's I suppose for a driving tour of the area. Especially the city's that don't even have a club website.
thanks ty
It's all good... but some of it's better... :)

I have been a lot of places some of them I could recommend
Highbridge hills(good but still very rough but nice and very challenging. Also nearby is Sandy point, which is my favorite course in wisconsin. and fiddlers creek which is decent.)

Appelton Area- has good courses in plamann and telulah, within 5 minutes is gringon in kaukauna and Ohauser in menahsa which are nice. An hours drive you can get to Green bay, manitowoc or sheboygan, which all have nice courses.

Madison- has elver and hiestand which are both nice and a 5 minute drive gets you to Vallarta which is sweet.

Cedar Rapids- 3 beautiful courses here in Jones, Shaver and Legion parks

Frisco- Offers Peninsula rec area and copper mountain, both beautiful areas and Leaville is only an hours drive, I really recommend this course, it is probably the nicest I have played.

Last but not least columbia, Mo- 2 nice courses at oakland park and a great one at indian hills park.

PDGA Competition Director, John Chapman compiled this information.

Worlds Locations Historically:

PRO WORLDS
1982 Irvine, CA
1983 Huntsville, AL
1984 Rochester, NY
1985 Tulsa, OK
1985 Helsingborg, SWEDEN (yes, there were two that year)
1986 Charlotte, NC
1987 Toronto, ON
1988 Cincinnati, OH
1989 Waterloo, IA
1990 Phoenix, AZ
1991 Dayton, OH
1992 Detroit, MI
1993 Huntsville, AL
1994 Port Arthur, TX
1995 Port Arthur, TX
1996 South Bend, IN
1997 Charlotte, NC
1998 Cincinnati, OH
1999 Rochester, NY
2000 Ann Arbor, MI (Pro-Am)
2001 Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN
2002 Houston, TX
2003 Flagstaff, AZ
2004 Des Moines, IA (Pro-Am)
2005 Lehigh Valley, PA

Back from the boneyard... not quite in time for Halloween, my project is back on track... I've got a Top Secret framework to add data to my previously mentioned map: GoDiscGolf USA Travel Map Planner (http://www.godiscgolf.com/flash_mx/TravelMap/index.htm)
I've got a drill down menu system where I'll be able to link more course info without reloading the flashmap page using AJAX (if anyone's heard of that it's a techie thing).
What I'll be able to do is link 5 different lists w/ Top Ten courses in different categories...
The first list I'd like is Top Ten previous World's LOcations that are still Hot Disc Golf destinations in the USA. This doesn't have to be a scientific excercise just your top pick from the cities that previously hosted a Pro World's competition...
I'm also open for anybody's ideas of Top ten lists in other categories.... I might do regional, it's hard to break the country down into regions though... I might just come up w/ Top Ten vacation destinations and tie it to other area thing's like the disney worlds, amusement parks etc.
But for starter's I'd like to have Top 10 World's Cities that still have some of the best disc golfing today. It's probably safe to say I could just take the ten most recent locations, but that might leave out some other good ones.
Thanks!

1999 - Chili and Ellison are still top notch courses, although Chili doesn't have the immaculate landscaping it had in the years around Pro Worlds 1999. Ellison is as good as ever, unless they've done nothing to improve the teepads. A few of these are deep, rutted ditches - downright awful. There's a new woods course, Basil Marella, with some par fours through the woods that are reminiscent of Tyler State Park in PA.

2000 - The Toboggan course is only in the ground for a week each year during the Am Nationals. If I was going to travel to Michigan, I would definitely do it when the Toboggan course is playable!

2002 - One of the temporary courses, the Tourney course, is only in the ground each year during the Texas States tournament. You can still play the Wilmont and Powell year round, and there's many other local courses that were not used during Pro Worlds. Many of these are very nice courses, but none are world class unless you travel out to Tyrrell Park in Beaumont or down to Victoria.

2003 - You can play the Thorpe and NAU courses year round, but I believe the hotel course was only in the ground for Pro Worlds 2003 and Am Worlds 2005. The Snowbowl course is seasonal. Apparently there is a brand new course at McPherson Park.

2005 - The guys out at Tinicum do a fantastic job of rotating the pin positions regularly, (minimum 2, usually 3 polehole positions on every hole) so you will likely not play the Pro Worlds layout.

While the Jordan Creek course also has a few alternate pin positions that are rotated, it's essentially the same layout. One big change is the removal of the par four ninth hole - there's now a pin position just behind where the mandatory tree was, and it can be deuced with a righty hyzer shot. A new hole 12 plays up a different fairway to where the long pin position of hole#9 used to be; this replaces the hole that Nate Doss aced during competition.

The poleholes have been removed from the Little Lehigh Parkway course until after the Lights in the Parkway display ends in January. Even then, the layout has been shortened for safety reasons in a number of places.

And finally, the first four holes have been removed from the Nockamixon course due to Great Heron nesting. I'm under the impression that either a) alternate holes will be created or b) the poleholes will be replaced after the nesting season ends.

My list also took into account other things to do in the area besides the specific Worlds courses (which also includes other courses). Sound like Lehigh Valley and Rochester might be a tossup now with the changes since PW05.

i've only been going since 97 so i haven't been to any of the others you mentioned....

but if you throw am worlds cities in also you would have ALOT more vacation areas to visit!!!

Nov 01 2005, 07:47 PM
Good point about some of the temp courses like the toboggan run course... maybe that'll make it to it's own list, temp courses and courses w/ special happenings and their own little time window....
What do you call that list... Time bombed courses...
Mentioned way earlier was a Window when you could play some temp courses in Hawaii...
Anybody want's to challenge anything on Chuck's list better throw in one of their own then... to replace it. I didn't paste in the list for places that have held AM world's event's either... Courses would no doubt be a little shorter for Am World's you'ld think.
The drill down menu's gonna take a little work... I probably should quick link to the PDGA directory for each course listed for starter's then get a basic description and maybe a link to an area dg club website if there is one... linking to the course eval pages would be good, but that's gonna be some time I think... not that my own project hasn't stalled a time or two. The more time it takes the more accurate the ratings on that, I'm hoping.
The idea being here on the map deal... these are all 5 star locations All Good... the PDGA course eval project is tough it looks like so far.
Alright Keith since you mentioned AM locale's to the list give me your best 3 there... :)

i'll start by saying i only PLAYED in one am worlds '97,and played pro worlds 2 weeks later....
but from my time of playing in 97....
am worlds have been in----
i'm relying on memory...grand rapids mich, wisconsin,kansas city,paw2000 in ann arbor,nashville,miami :D,kansas city,paw 2004 des moines,iowa and flagstaff...

kansas city, nashville and miami all have tons of things to do besides good disc golf courses....so that would be my 3

how about anyone else?

If you want to see the complete list of Am world's locations' go to page three of this thread top of the page... that's why I didn't paste in all of those... Check em out Keith, thanks for you input...
Not really sure about Nashville.. there's plenty of other stuff to do, are the courses top-rated would you say... there's not much of a club there I think i already found out.
These lists can be subject to change so they can all be featured in the end, I'm just trying to get my initial setup for now since I've cracked the coding issues somewhat....

I can'y say I'd be disappointed if I had to play the Gran Canyon (Brooksville, FL.) for a week. Besides now there's the Player's Cup course not too far away.

. . . and the brooksville quarry ball golf course
plus we just got approved to put a new course in a citrus county park early next year, stay tuned for details on that one!

i still remember my trip to nashville worlds fondly. cedar hill is one of my fav's.

Cool Chuck... the only one I might not be able to use is Huntsville, mainly because there's not enough resources... no website, no picture, no course descripts... I don't want to use just the stock PDGA descript's I'll be linking everybody over that I can anyways.
Anybody out there got some info on Hunstville or should I pass on Huntsville... does it rate in the Top 10 past worlds courses...? Any club websites in Huntsville AL area?

If you can't get Huntsville info, I would substitute KC instead of Miami where Am Worlds has been recently enough.

Nov 02 2005, 09:55 PM
Thanks, Chuck we'll do... emailed the guy's over at AZdiscgolf to help there... and Disc Life still has some coverage from past worlds archived... whatever happened to the gang at DiscLife... It was Sulli's site who now does PDGA radio right?
I found the actual course legend for Ann Arbor that was cool helps alot wish i had the course legend from all of them, some of the courses are gone no doubt
2000 Ann Arbor, MI
Course Legend:
TC/HM = Tournament Central/Hudson Mills
HMO = Hudson Mills Original
HMC = Hudson Mills Campground
HMM = Hudson Mills Monster
KTN = Kensington Tunnel
KTB = Kensington Toboggan

I have now... It's cool when they archive this stuff... web hosting's cheap right. I think next up list will be Top 10 scenic... I have a few good ideas there... then maybe Top 10 Player's courses which would include The major tournament courses. That ought to keep me busy till about Christmas I imagine.

If you are going to Charlotte, remember that we have several new courses, along with making the ones used in 97'new and improved. Charlotte disc golf is awesome!

They got it all right there... the tournament disc artwork for the top five courses is just insane... Are there a couple other courses that definately deserve a mention to highlight them more, before linking people over to the dgc and they make the journey into cyberspace...

Nov 04 2005, 09:35 AM
Sweet...... Front page link on the pdga is up for: 2006 Am Worlds.org website (http://www.2006amworlds.org/) Tulsa OK. Anybody got the skinny on courses there the new website page says Under Construction meaning the webpage or the actual courses. This will make the list of Player's Destinations for sure...
[edit] Wow... just checked the course directory, Tulsa's got almost a dozen courses within about a 15 miles radius... Can you say Hot Spot!

Not sure if Bowling Green, KY has been mentioned, but I think it deserves some consideration. There are 8 courses in the town with a population of 50,000 - it is really a great disc golf community. For the size of the town, there is a very strong following of disc golf there (also, the largest A-tier in the country is hosted in BG every year). When playing the courses it is not uncommon to run into pros like Rick Voakes, Julianna Korver and Shawn Sinclair.

Toronto Island- Toronto, ON

Very good course, but it's everything else that makes it a destination. The course is on an Island where no cars are allowed, and you must take a ferry from downtown to get to the Island. Plus Toronto is a destination in it's own right ;) for pretty much anything you could be interested in

I think anyone that has ever been there would agree with me.

Dickerson park, Monroe NC (southern charlotte) deserves a mention, as well as Glenn C. Hilton in Hickory (one hour drive). Pretty soon you will see the par 70 version of Hornet's Nest, called Charlotte's web, and possibly Idlewild park within the year. Cameron Yards deserves some attention as well, as you can play all night long (lighted), and because it is private, beverages of your choice are legal, without having to use your towel to cover it!

If you're ever in the area. It now has 36 holes, and a new hot tub. Record on the big course is 52. However, you won't need your game to enjoy being here. Horseshoe Canyon (http://www.climbhcr.com/DISCGOLF.html)

NC destinations:

Mars Hill College in Mars Hill
Cedarock and Wellspring in Burlington

IMO you should skip Dickerson in Monroe and Cameron Yards in Charlotte. I was surprised to see them mentioned.

Must visits:
Brandywine in Wilmington DE
Lake Russel SP in Elberton GA
La Mirada in La Mirada CA

A friend and I are considering taking a disc golf vacation sometime next year. Has anyone else done this, and if so, what cities would you recommend for this?

We really want to have a good number of courses in driving distance (less than an hour, let's say) with some true Championship-caliber courses in the mix.

You can't go wrong with the courses in your home state!

Start at Johnson Street Park in High Point, then play Cedarock/Wellspring in Burlington. Next, swing out to Cedar Hills in Raleigh, Zebulon Community Park in Zebulon, and Buckhorn at Harris County Lake in New Hill.

Finally, head down to Charlotte and play Hornets Nest, Renaissance Park, and the Winthrop U course in Rock Hill, SC.

These are all true Championship-caliber courses.

How about this criteria: Areas with time-share units and a lot of disc golf course.

We are also looking for a vacation spot where we can trade a time-share week and play a lot of golf. It doesn't have to be all World Class courses. A great course, a couple good ones, and some other stuff to do would be the minimum requirements.

Any ideas on that?

Whitecap ski & golf resort is less than a half hour from Highbridge, WI with its five courses. The Ski chalets rent out for around $350-400 per week in the summer and sleep up to 9. Not sure if they have a time share tradeout program. Either way, this is a new lodging option this summer for folks planning to attend the Mid-Nationals in July.

Advice from a fellow chemist! Johnson St. is my home course. I play the Burlington courses quite a bit as well. I've also played some of the Charlotte courses and the RDU courses.

It's also supposed to be a vacation--a chance to go somewhere else for a while. I'd definitely prefer to go somewhere sunny and warm. Any opinions on the Florida courses or even the SoCal courses? Rhett or Kenny C. feel free to reply.

You didn't say when, how far, how long.

If time and budget allow, go with the weather! Go north in the summer, Florida in the winter (Orlando / Tampa puts plenty of fine courses in a short drive).

Or do a long loop---to Charlotte (Rennaissance, Hornets Nest), 30 minutes to Rock Hill (Winthrop), an hour to Columbia (Earlewood), an hour to Augusta (Riverview, Olmstead), 2 hours to Atlanta (Redan), another hour to Meriweather, several hours to Birmingham (Ward), several hours to Nashville (Cedar Hill, Seven Oaks)....how long to you have? If you can spread courses out about an hour apart, it's just about enough rest time for the next course.

What sort of person tells somebody to take a vacation where they already live, and then teaches them about their home courses?

Weird!

The Cincinnati area has several great courses and is worth consideration. Idlewild, Mt. Airy, Banklick Woods, Harbin, AJ Jolly ... to name a few ...

see: Cincinnati Disc Golf website > courses page (http://www.cincinnatidiscgolf.com/courses/index.htm)

Idlewild is a pro par 72 (SSA around 67 from the longs) 18 hole course that you don't want to miss.

the pic.s are way out of date and have been re-taken but the new ones are not up yet. (the course is better maintained and has seen a lot of improvements than when it was new and still rough around the edges...)

Lowe,
Dickerson park was mentioned in lieu of it's similar play as say a course in Tulsa for worlds. I am also talking about the long version. A very technical, fairly open, wind affected course. If you say pass on this one, you probably got it handed to you out there, or had no idea there was a long version. I wonder why pro's like Stan the man enjoy it so? I even had a random Cam sighting out there in the recent past.
Let me make it really clear why Cameron Yards was mentioned. NIGHT GOLF, BEER, NIGHT GOLF, CHARLOTTE LOCALS, BEER, NIGHT GOLF, AND BEER. Thursday nights are the night to be there for weekly tournamet play.
Again, I believe the Charlotte area has the best disc golfing variey and quality of anywhere.

It's a draw. If you look at the SSA stats, they are both close to 64. www.pdga.com/tournament/course_ratings_by_course.php (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/course_ratings_by_course.php)

Here are the courses still in the ground that I have played that I'd hit above all others. All are in there GOLD layouts. If I were doing BLUEs or WHITEs I'd likely have a completely different list.

<table border="1"><tr><td> My Ranking</td><td>Course Name (All Longs)</td><td>State</td><td>SSA</td><td>Eval Link Score
</td></tr><tr><td>1</td><td>Nockamixon </td><td>PA</td><td>67.13</td><td>3

</td></tr><tr><td>5</td><td>Warwick Town Park</td><td>NY</td><td>64.61</td><td>3 1/2
</td></tr><tr><td> </tr></td></table>

Honorable mentions would be Akron, Little Lehigh and Tinicum.

Although Idlewild is listed as being in Kentucky, it is located in the greater Cincinnati area -- so to play it, Cinci would be your destination

I don't know what the standard is for having Florence's Veterans park on the list. Unless it is for the +25yr/old baskets that give you the infamous "Florence Swoop". But if your looking at old courses, Brahan Springs park in Huntsville is the second oldest in the world. UAH is a great links style course (SSA 56), and Mastin Lake is like Cottage Hill, but Mastin is actually located on a hill, while Cottage Hill is flat. Also there is no lake at Mastin Lake.

The Cedar Lake in IN....the course is in Lemon Lake County Park. A great course. 27 permanant holes and for the Homies event there are 2 courses of 22 utilizing the permanant holes along with a slew of temps on the other side of the road (red course, blue course).

Riversidediscgolf.org.....My home and favorite course!!! :DPut that on ur list! Still in the working, about to have a fly through of the course in winter and summer. Come to Texas, where everything is bigger, including the number of courses. Oh yea, everything here is not all wide open.

a few of us travel once a year for a discgolf trip. We have hit austin tx, charlotte nc, and just recently, Kansas City, which i thought had the best courses yet. What cities should we add to the list? we need about 5-7 top-notch courses within 45 min or so of the city. Thinking about a trip in late feb. (florida or texas?), and one in late sept. (minneapolis, des moine, back to KC?). any ideas? how is clearwater florida?
thanks

Des Moines is great. They've gots lots of great courses within a 1 hour drive and if you want to take a 2 hour drive over to Cedar Rapids there are several quality courses in the Cedar Rapids / Iowa City area. Plus you will always have a blast in Iowa City, that place is sooooooo much fun.

I'd also suggest NorCal. Not anyone city but everywhere. Some buddies of mine did a trip up there a few years back, hit several courses, car camped in a different national forest each night, hit up the Sierra Nevada brewery. It was nice.

Highbridge in Wisconsin is an awesome destination...just far away up north.
Lemon Lake is awesome as well, but not as tough.
Lake Tahoe in the summer is unbelievable and has numerous courses.
Northeast Pennsylvania has excellent courses. I love Nockamixon, Tinnicum, Lil' Lehigh, and Jordan Creek. And I hear that Tyler is just majesticly sexy!!

Disc Golf in Iowa is great all over - from Des Moines to the Quad Cities. The Twin Cities has a ton of quality courses. Highbridge is worth the drive. Although none of these destinations is recommended in February!

Huntsville, Alabama is on the way to Clearwater. They have a great variety of courses including UAH. Plus the Space Center is a must see! Two world Championships have already been decided in Huntsville. Rumor has it, they want to host Worlds again.
