I'm TD'ing my first tournament soon and was wondering what Ams thought was a better prize for finishing in the top paying positions. Would you prefer to win only a few discs that are top line plastic (Star, Champion, ESP, Z, etc.), a few more discs of mixed variety of plastic, or a bunch of low end (DX, X, Pro) discs? Thanks for your input

I have always found it best to have a vendor that has a large supply and let the AM's pick what they want. Hand out vouchers and make a deal with that vendor to pay 75% of face value or something like that.
Club gets $$, Players get a choice, Local vendor get a nice bump and makes $$.. I try to have a nice choice of Club disc available for cash out also. :)
When I played AM's I hated to get a stack of junk. I would rather get 2 disc I want then 10 I didn't.

Breeze accurately reflects the opinion of the vast majority of players.

What they said.
Absolutely. Go with vouchers, whether you handle the plastic yourself or use a vendor.

if you get the tournament specials from Discraft the cost of high end discs is so low that you can give out plenty of better stuff to the ams

When cashing in the vouchers, it's not fair to allow those who placed 14th and 15th to pick their prizes before 3rd, 2nd, and 1st.
If the pile of plastic from which to choose isn't unlimited, then make it fair. Reward those who shot better by giving them first crack at what's available.
What good is it to come in 1st or 2nd and have a handful of vouchers, only to find out that 15th-3rd wiped out all the good plastic, leaving you nothing but boat anchors to choose from.

We do it as a mob scene at the end of the awards ceremony. Then again, we always have sufficient stock so no one gets left with the crumbs.
But to the original question, if you're not giving vouchers, I suggest premium plastic. Many players don't throw base plastics at all, and will view it as basically junk. Those who normally throw base plastic can still use premium.

Gift Certificates are the way to go. We force players to line up by division in order of finish (ladies first of course). Then one player per division is allowed into the disc area to get their fill. This process works very smooth and eliminates the mob scene, which nobody likes.

This is how we do it on the NC Coast:
Player... Let's call him Spalding - "I want a hamburger. No, cheeseburger. I want a hot dog. I want a milkshake. I want potato chips"
TD... Let's call him Judge Smails - "You'll get nothing, and like it!"
Trig (we do the voucher thing also... just kidding) out
