John Merhi here to talk about The 16th Mid-Atlantic AM Championships. Once again, the MAAC has been sanctioned by the PDGA as a B-tier event and will be held July 24 - 25, 2010 at Seneca Creek State Park DGC in beautiful Gaithersburg, MD. This is the event where the Advanced AM Player is revered and celebrated. By design, this tournament falls on the same weekend as the Pro Worlds. I am thankful that this year's AM Worlds aren't concurrent with the Pro Worlds.

The format will be the same tried-and-true format we've used every year. Two 18-hole rounds per day. Advanced and Masters will play Short Tees to A-pins, Long Tees to A-pins on Saturday. Long Tees to B-pins, Short Tees to C-pins on Sunday. Intermediate divisions play all 4 rounds from the Short Tees. There are NO 27-hole rounds. Once again, we're going to attempt to pull this off with the same entry fees we've had since the 90s. This year we'll be prayin extra hard for post-recession year sponsorship to keep the entry fees low. Advanced & Masters: $40. Intermediate and Ladies: $25. Non-PDGA (or non-current) members must add $10.

Like last year, the PDGA has granted me a waiver to force Pro players who are eligible to play (<970) into a mandatory Trophy Only category. Trophy Only will be available for a nominal fee of $10 (which won't even cover your lunch + PDGA dues). IMHO, this was a HUGE success last year, especially in the Masters field. The beauty of this waiver is that it practically eliminates sandbagging. Now, the <970 Pro player who would never even consider playing this event CAN play in it guilt free. You are not impinging on the AM prizes, just their PDGA points... which few lose much sleep over. I encourage Pros <970 who love playing Seneca to COME OUT for the MAAC. It's only going to cost you $10, you get to play 4 rounds of tournament golf, your results will get turned into the PDGA, and I will feed you like a pig. If there's a downside to this deal, it's hard for me to see it.

Thanks to Rich Myers, I have been shown first hand that being a Luddite is WRONG. I now embrace on-line registration and it is up and running. Search for this tournament in the July schedule and click on the online registration link. On-line registration ROCKS, however, Flintstone-era registration will still be available as will day-of-event signups. There will NEVER be a registration late fee for this event. When you show up at 9:45 am Saturday morning, I am STILL happy to see you and won't fine you.

Sponsorship is only $25 and all proceeds will go directly toward FEEDING the field, i.e. lunch, sodas, ice, etc. The goal is to get two grills and cook out like we've done the past few years. If you could sponsor a hole, please do! Please note that running this tournament is actually EASY compared to providing lunch both days. Make no mistake, the cook out lunch is a HUGE endeavor. My extreme gratitude goes out to guys like JG, Sean Burkett, Keith Palmer, Steve Simpson, Ray Jones, and everyone else who has stood behind the grill and COOKED in the 90 degree July heat (SeanB, Dan, Tim come to mind... but I know there's more). Once again, I'm prayin' you're there for me this year too.

INNOVA pro portable basket goes to highest finishing non-Trophy-only men's Advanced player! Fat prize payout for everyone else.

Please see the tournament flier for my email and phone number. Please contact me if you want to save the $3.75 and pre-register the pre-historic way.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN THIS EVENT!

Player registration list?

This year's pre-registration has been the most prolific by far. Prior to doing online registration (and when this tourney was held in September), I rarely ever had more than 5-10 pre-registrants in any given year. So far this year... 39!

The above list is through last night and only counts people who have paid. There are very few local homies on the list as they will sign up this week.

I have 1 grill lined up and I'm working on securing the second grill. Once that's finalized, most of the rest will hopefully fall into place. Prizes have been delivered and the weather forecast looks good, albeit hot on Saturday. Bring water!

Remember, there is no late fee for Saturday signups so you won't be penalized for your last minute decision. In all honesty, registration never closes... it just depends on how many 7s you're willing to take on your score card. If you show up at 11:30 a.m, you can still sign up.... :)

In Advanced, the highest rated pre-registered player (so far) has a player rating of 968. He's also the youngest person in the field, having just turned 18 in March. The second highest rated player is 947. He happens to be the oldest player playing (don't know his actual age, but I'm surmising he's ~ 50). Third highest is 937 and the rest of pre-registrants are somewhere between 901 and 937.

So far, there are only two Pro's playing AM and both are playing Trophy Only so they aren't playing for any prizes.

It's gonna be a fun weekend! :)

Checklist so far:

Yesterday the Park finished cutting the grass to the same Country Club standard we've grown accustomed to over the past 2 years. They did a great job and the course looks GREAT. We got a fresh mow to play on baby.... rollers are gonna scream!

The OB line on Holes 3, 4, 5, 13, and 14 has been checked, verified, and where broken, replaced. It is completely in tact (its probably close to a half-mile of OB line). Special thanks to Chad Collins, Will Werber, Steve Simpson, Ray Jones, Scott Forman, and Tom Kim for helping me verify and repair the OB line.

A 2-day alcohol permit has been purchased. The permit only allows for alcohol use in and around the picnic table area. The Parking Lot and the Course itself are still alcohol-free zones. Especially the Parking Lot. Do not bring open beers into the parking lot!!!

All the baskets have been moved to A except for Hole 16 and 27. Hole 16 will stay in B the entire weekend. The B-pin is so short, no one is going to miss the A-pin. Hole 27 will be moved before tomorrow morning. B-pins and C-pins for Sunday's rounds!

Thanks to Jake Bolinger and Mark Stiles, there is a new Long tee pad on Hole 21. Of course we are going to use it!!!

Special thanks to Rich Myers for donating an M-14 basket. With an extra basket on hand, it appears the winner of the AM2 field will also win a basket this year. This is quite the extraordinary gift from Rich. But that's what Rich does... he gives and gives and gives to Maryland Disc Golf. We are very lucky to have him as our State Coordinator.

We will NOT use the new red Short Tee of Hole 1. We will use the old Short Tee (now considered the White Tee) and the Long Tee at the edge of the Parking Lot. The new red short tee is just too short.

For the final round - hopefully I'll remember to use the 2nd Practice Basket as the C-pin of Hole 18. When you see the mow job, it would be a crime not to use this pin placement as a C-pin for 18.

The field will VOTE on whether to establish a 2-meter rule or not. You probably don't need a professional pollster to figure out what the outcome of the vote will be....

50 people pre-registered so far with 40 spots open tomorrow morning. Of course, I expect a bunch of people to pre-register this evening at the course. I'll be at the Park until close. While I still don't think we will fill, it's going to be closer than it ever has before.

It's going to be BLAZING HOT tomorrow. Bring gallons upon gallons of water. Bring water to share.

If a thunderstorm happens during the 4th round on Sunday, the tournament will be called. We won't wait for it to pass and then resume play. I want the out-of-towners to be able to get on the road without delays.

Can't wait. This tournament hasn't had this kind of response since 1996 when there were far fewer courses and people HAD to travel. I don't know what's up this year, but I'm not asking questions. I'm excited and it's going to be a great weekend.
