Northtown Park is in Austin. Last time I checked, there was not a PDGA page for it and I accidentally left the link to the template course (the NE course closest to my house). I'll remove these links asap. Good catch.

This sounds like a blast and something that is long overdue. Matchplay is by far my favorite form of disc golf competition. After years of playing the Sandy Point team event and years of running the Capital Cup(a match play tournament) here in Madison i am eagerly awaiting a chance to play in this.
SO i was a little confused about how to get in. Will it be a first come first served to get into the regional events?
Best of luck to getting this going.

We've been running single-elimination, match play tournaments for the last 7 years, but it's great to see a format to draw top players into match play.

Equally cool, perhaps even moreso, is the regional qualifiers concept. One of the appeals of the USDGC is how hard it is to get in.

Add to that the fact that it's something DIFFERENT. So much of what we do is the same as what we've done before, just hopefully a little better.

We could have a winner here.

In the regionals, the top six ranked players (using the Prime Discs Ranking System and not including the top 32 players that have reserved spots at the finals) will have reserved spots in the regionals. The other spots will be first come first served.

Where will signup be for the regionals, and what time on August 17th will it go on sale?

I scoured every word on every page and every link but these 2 questions are NOT addressed anywhere.

With only 18 spots and it open to ANYONE not in the region it would be good to know, as I anticipate those 18 spots will sell out faster than the Vibram Open does :)

Thanks to you and Mike for putting this on!

Curious about the South Central Region. It is shown a course that doesn't exist and there is no date. Any idea when those details will be finalized? The reason I ask is that in Texas there is already an event scheduled for evey weekend in September - first 2 weeks in October probably with more cropping up. I'd hate to miss this, sounds like a BLAST! We did this for our club championship a few years back and it was tremendously fun (especially cuase I won :))

I was wondering if I could get more details on the regional format

first question in the FAQs is What happens if I lose my first match and it is answered:

Regionals - You play the second round against someone else that lost their first match.

if I understand the regionals format correctly, the field is divided into 3 8 player brackets, with only the winners advancing, so if you lose your first match, then is playing a second round really doing anything? or is it double elimination?

also, for the south east regional, it appears to be held the day before an A tier at the IDGC - pretty neat idea to get the most amount of players, but it appears the winner of each bracket could potentially play 3 full rounds (if each match is close) the day BEFORE a big tournament - at the IDGC courses, this will be pretty beast like

not necessarily a bad thing, just trying to clarify - both events combined could be like an iron man challenge haha

StevenDodge
Jul 12 2010, 09:03 AM
1. The second round is not doing anything except letting folks play another round (which I would like to do, even if I was already eliminated). This also allows folks to be able to watch the finals of each bracket.

2. You are correct. This was the best time to run it due to the busy schedule. Not that we thought about it, but you could argue that this would be a good warm up for the event itself which will be two rounds a day over three days.

On a side note, I did some cool tinkering over the weekend and expect to be able to show off a little something that DGA is sponsoring at the event.

I am concerned about the lack of information on such an awesome sounding event.

The website says that registration will be done through that site and that it would open on August 17th at noon, eastern.

I would assume that registration is now supposed to be open, but I do not see anything on the website indicating that, nor do I see a way to register.

Can we get some more information on this? I was thinking there would be a lot more excitement surrounding this event.

Also, when will the list of the top 32 players who have accepted invitations be posted and when will the list of top 6 players for each region be posted? (I know I am not one of them, just curious)

Looking forward to some answers. Thanks

We are working on the top 32 players right now. So far, Feldberg and Orum are in and Doss is out. I have not heard from the others yet.

We made three last minute changes to the format:

1. We ended up not saving the 6 spots for top regional players. Bearing in mind the slow replies of the top players, this would have been impossible to figure out. We will be more ahead of the game on this next year.

2. We changed the qualifiers to double eliminiation 9 hole matches.

3. We increased the regional participants to 32 (from 24).

Steve, Hello just a couple questions. 1st what if the regional qualifiers do not fill at 24/32 people? and there is an odd number of players lets say 19? How will that work since there will not be complete 8 person brackets.
Second how are these regional brackets going to be set up ? player rating, pdga#, good looks(lol).
If only 3 players sign up for a certain regional do all three automaticaly play in the finals? I am allready signed up to play but wonder if there will be day of registration at the regionals?
Thanks in advance and cant wait to play matchplay again!!!!

1. If there is an odd number, someone will get a bye in the first round, this person would be randomly picked.
2. Positions in the bracket for this first year will be random and decided the day of the
Regionals by the TD (Aaron and I up here in the NorthEast will be using a deck of cards).
3. If only three folks show up, yes they will all advance to the finals.
4. I expect that there will be day of registrations.

Interest in the website is picking up as we are starting to get the word out about what we're going to be pulling off. It will be even bigger next year after we have one of these match play finals under our belts.

Spread the word (unless you want to get less people to your Regional event :-D)

Hi Scott,

I will need to revise the online bracket. I used to call the Mountain Region the Mid-West before Mitch taught me that the Mid-West is actually in the center of the country. So, MW stands for Mid-West, which means Mountain Region. Clear as mud?

I bet MI stands for Mid-Atlantic and is a simple typo.

And while I'm on the subject, current plans are for the top 32 spots to be filled by the Monday after the USDGC. Qualified players will need to talk to Mike Barnett at the USDGC or get in touch with Mike or myself before the Monday after the USDGC to secure their spots.

Lastly, we are leaning towards placing the regional qualifiers into the bracket quasi-randomly. The goal would be to put one player from each regional in a separate quadrant, but other than that, make their placement in the bracket random. The other thought would be to have a live webcast of the name pickings and then right after that, publish the bracket online so people can start to fill out their brackets. This should all happen about two weeks after the USDGC.

Hi Steve D.,

If you have 32 regional players (4 brackets of 8) and a champion from each bracket, how do you determine which of the 4 is not going, since only 3 bracket champions + the TD can go from each of the 8 Regions?

And are the regionals designed to be true double elimination events?

Thanks!
Steve L.

StevenDodge
Sep 30 2010, 10:52 AM
In some regions (SouthWest, for example), the TD is not going to compete at the Player's Cup Match Play finals. In these regions, there will be four qualifiers that earn spots.

I'm not sure what you mean by "true double elimination" events, but yes, they are double elimination.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for your previous response! Everything worked out.

I was wondering if there were recommended hotels in the area or even a host hotel?

Also, I assume each match is 18 holes. Is there a mercy rule? If some pro is crushing me 10-0 after 10 holes, do we keep going? 12000 ft per round is a lot of big pulls for an old, out of shape guy like me!

Really looking forward to it though!
Thanks,

In match play, as soon as it is mathematically impossible for one player to win, the match is over. For example, if you lose the first 10 holes, the match would be over (on the bright side though, you would most certainly get an honorable mention and recap on the DVD!-)

Next Weekend is the 1st really big match play event in the history of disc golf.
With a guarantee of $5k ( thats what I heard) for first and MOST of the big name players attending, this event is certainly going to spark up some interest.

This event is being held on a ball golf course with par 3’s , 4’s and 5’s and should require players to have all the shots to win matches. It just wont be the best putter wins.

There’s one thing i can tell you for sure about a match play format is that it is very different from a regular pdga stroke play event.

Ive ran 4 or 5 local match play events here in St Louis and for the most part the events were fun and exciting.
Like the NCAA Tournament, there are always upsets and cinderalla’s making a deeper run then expected.
Match play is head to head competition that creates more pressure from the 1st hole on!
Those with match play experience know that getting behind shouldn’t strike a sense of urgency in you, that its an 18 hole match and you’re going to lose a few holes.
A player inexperienced with match play may feel added pressure when down 1 or 2 holes at the beginning and have a tendency to start pressing too soon.

Theres so much more strategy to match play than stroke as its scored per hole.
If you know you opponent is going t o bogey, theres no need to make the birdie putt and laying up is the play.
On the flip side if you know your opponent is going to par and you have a down hill birdie putt with OB behind, you need to make the clear decision to either give it a good chain high run or just lay up and try to win the next hole.
If hes parked and you have the same put for bird,, you have to risk the bogey to make the bird, it doesn’t matter at ll if you lose a hole by 1, 2 or 3 strokes as match play is per hole.

This same type of strategy can also take place right off the tee, especially on a good course with lots of risk/reward.
If you opponent drops one in the drink, it may be time to play it safe to take that hole.

Match play is fun and the scenarios that take place during a match require much more thought than a typical ” lets go neg 7″ round during stroke play. Your over all score is truly irrelevant, as the only thing that matters is you win the match.
I love match play when playing ball golf ( because I’m not very good) as it allows you to have a really bad hole but remain in a match.

I’d recommended all players giving match play a try sometime.
If you are playing against someone better than you,,,,, "Handicapping" a match play round will be needed and will give each player a chance to win. Lets say you know your opponent is 5 strokes better than you, he can give you a 1/2 stroke a hole on 10 different holes, ,,,,holes either of you should choose before the match starts. Handicapping makes the better player have to play his best to win and it helps the lesser player, by giving him a shot at a victory. Players do get tired of always getting beat and handicapping a match play event can certainly spice of a friendly rivalry and allow players of different skill levels to compete against each other and offer the challenge needed for improving each ones game.

Theres a few challenges to running a successful match play tournament.
1) Seedings;
Initial seedings are very important to some players,,,if someone feels they have an improper seeding or they ARE actually seeded wrong they usually arent afraid to say so once they lose.
2) Losing;
different than stroke play, when a match is over there is a winner and a loser, being a loser has more impact on a persons psyche, then lets say,,,,, coming in 5th or 9th. Losing packs a punch some players just cant handle.

3) What happens once eliminated?;
There are several formats for a match play event. Some have pool play first to advance, others may have a qualifying round. theres also round robin or double elimination.
No one wants to play one match lose and be done for the day, so loser brackets are usually created. Often times a good match play event will still offer prizes in the losers brackets to keep everyones interest.
Of courses its the winners bracket that produces the BIG winner. The winner of most match play events is the guy who never lost, he defeats each player he faces and is the last men left standing. This means at some point everyone else in the event loses,,,again something that is much different than placing 3rd- 10th. ( even though an event may conitue to play until each player actually has a placed finish) But this usually takes a lot of extra matches to play out.).

4) Ties;
a clear cut way to determine the winner when a match is tied is VERY important, you cant have sudden death play offs that last an hour. I usually like to have sudden death, but with more time I may allow a 3 hole play off,,, then if theres no winner go to sudden death, but to assure your event stays on schedule, it may come down to a CTP, something that again causes one player to lose, Its tough enough to lose out right, but when a player has to lose by CTP,,, watch out!

5) Dormey;
This is when the player is behind more holes than there are left ( down 5 with 4 to play) and cannot come back to win. Some events want to let players keep playing but it really adds to the time an event will last and hamper the ability to stay on schedule. Once a match is over players should shake hands and walk off the course.

6) practice shots;
Practice shots like taking an extra putt are sometimes allowed in match play, or a player may give the other player the shot ” Thats Gimme”, this means the player doesnt have to putt and the hole is over. this can be a good strategy as if you give a player 5 10 footers in a row, he may not be in a groove to make his next 15 footer. the thing about gimmes is if the player doesnt take the gimme and putts its not a gimme. Theres more strategy, but I gotta run.

In closing:

Its not very likely everyone that plays in a match play event will be happy when they walk off the course ,, after all,,, all but 1 will walk off the course having LOST to their opponent at some point.

I always liked the added pressure of match play and how it effects the players.
I’m looking forward to the live broadcast of this years Match play event and hope to see some exciting disc golf!

Match play is a simple knock out format which determines first and second place pretty well but not other positions below it. Next step would be double elimination match play which determines a few more places pretty well. But the best Match play format is the Swiss system they've successfully used in chess for a hundred years or so and also used in badminton, Scrabble, bridge and even some Ultimate tournaments. It does the best job among match play formats to determine finish positions and everyone gets to play a match every round. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss-system_tournament

But first things first. Good luck to all the players trying the Players Cup. Looking forward to watching.

It's great to see a big money match play event with big names. I'm excited to see how that bracket format will work out.

Using a different meaning of the word "big," the match play event that has the most players also happens next weekend. The Texas Teams Championships has an amazing 456 players registered on 56 teams.

SINGLE GREATEST EVENT EVER! Both in the fact that it is the most fun and the competition is the most fierce! Will never forget that suggen death playoff for the right to move onto the quarter finals when there was a tie between Round Rock and Pease (I think). They play the first hole at the Circle R Meadow. Both players thow lack luster drives and put their approach shots 75' and 60' out respectively (it gets longer every time I tell the story). There's got to 100 people watching plus all 9 members from both teams anxiously awaiting. Leon G steps up, surveys the putt, throws some grass in the air, sets up, rocks a few times, putts and BOOM! Nails the 75 footer. Place goes crazy, his team mobs him and semi-dog piles him on the ground. All of this right in the face of the guy who now has to can a 60 footer to push to another hole. It takes a minute or two for the place to settle down and the guy from Round Rock is getting ready. He is noticabley nervous now. His captain Vinnie Miller tries to give him a little pep talk but there's no use, his putt fails to go in and the match is over. Epic finsih!

The Players Cup has it's own website, it's the first thing on pdga.com, it's got a live feed, a bracket pick-em game, etc etc etc. Hey here's an idea - post the reults from today's action where someone can see them?

Yeah its kind of sad that we can not see the results of all the brackets. This was supposed to be a big event and from the live coverage it appears it was but why no results posted anywhere. How come they never posted the match results and what hole were won or lost by each person?

They did, somewhere buried in their website, have the results from the losers brackets. I saw it last night, but it wasn't totally updated.

here it is: http://www.vibramdiscgolf.com/playerscup/bracket.html

This is an event that's never been attempted before, so I would expect there to be some hiccups along the way. It isn't like most other tournaments that have a simple and ready-made way to post results provided to them (PDGA.com). There's no way to post any results that aren't traditional stroke-play. They had to create something on their own site, and it appears the priority of that something was the main bracket, not the losers' brackets.

I'm sure they'll have full results up soon. The main bracket results are here: http://maplehillopen.com/bracket/report/tournamentresults.htm

This was a great event. I watched all weekend long and the covereage got consistantly better as the weekend progressed. Please take this as constructive feedback versus complaining. In several article and on PDGA.com I've consistently seen this event referred to as the "largest disc golf match play tournament ever held." Let's be clear about this. The largest disc golf match play tournament ever held occurs in Wimberly, TX. It occured the same weekend as this event and had roughly 500 players (not 64). The Player Cup may be the richest match play event but it isn't even close to being the largest.

I don't think the Players Cup is necessarily wrong in their claim. I think the distinction between the two is fairly significant. Texas is the biggest TEAM match play event. Players Cup is the biggest individual match play event.

Honestly, when I hear "match play event", I picture what the Players Cup did first. Perhaps that's because ball golf's WGC Accenture Match Play Championships uses the same bracketed, individual format. Texas Teams is more what I'd picture when "team event" formats are discussed.

Fair point, but the Ryder Cup is a match play event too. Either way this event was great and keep up the great work!

This is a good point Jerry. We should definitely quantify this claim, because based on the number of players it is wrong. And Kudos to the Texas Team match play event, 500 people doing anything together and having fun is crazy impressive.

Edit: After reading Josh's reply, perhaps we can say biggest individual match play event, but I'm not even sure that is quite right. Maybe we were simply the biggest match play event, held in Ocala, FL in 2010.

if so, darn lol - i managed to tie for 5th

Love match play. Love that you guys ran a big one. I spent a fair amount of work time watching online coverage. I have faith that Billy Crump's working on his Dictionary of Cliches as we speak (hey, I loved every one).

I would like to see not just winners but scores on those brackets. That way I could spend even more time reading through them :-)

Anyway, great job, hope you keep running this long enough for me to find my way down there one of these years.

I just wanted to say Thank you to all who helped put on this event. It was so much fun to play and to be able to see so many of the worlds top golfers in 1 place.
I love matchplay and agree that this format is probably one of the best for tv coverage.
For the most part it ran pretty smooth.
IF i were to change anything i would have a cut for those who lost the 1st three matches. Offer something else to do in the afternoon of the second day and on Sunday morning. This could be putting games, skills contests, mini golf, singles play at another course or get players to hang out and spectate the top matches. It could be a great time to generate some funds for the event. I lost my first 3 and was ready to stop playing, i would assume there were others who thought the same.
Payout was great. personally i would have like to see a 3rd and 4th have their own payout, make those putts worth some bucks!! The 3-2 payout was great but could be adjusted lower to help add money to the top 4. Just my 2 cents.
There are other little things but nothing major. Overall a great event. I didnt see the live coverage but it sounds like that was good and it also sounds like people liked the bracket games.
one last thing, i think the north central qualifier should be held here in WI, its a little more central for the region than St cloud. I would love to be the TD and run it here in Madison. (hint hint). Again thanks to Steve, Mike, Vibram, Pine Oaks, all the sponsors and everyone else who helped make this happen.
Matchplay WOO HOO!!!
