" The Delaveaga Disc Golf club is proud to once again have the "Ramada Limited" off of Water Street in Santa Cruz be the host hotel for this years event. This hotel is an excellent choice for golfers on a budget that want to remain close to the course and the beach. The tournament is during peak tourist season in Santa Cruz and even budget hotels can be pricey in this area this time of year.

The Ramada Limited is offering all tournament players, staff and spectators single bed rooms (one King) for $79.00 a night and two bed rooms (2 double beds) for $89.00. This hotel is within walking distance of at least a dozen restaurants and gas stations.

It's biggest draw is that it's only 5 min or less from the disc golf course. So if you miss your alarm there's still a chance to make your tee time. If you get time before or after your round the beach is only about a 10-15 min walk down the road. We expect a lot of golfers to stay here during the tournament so if you want to stay where the action is going to be get your rooms booked ASAP.

Please use the code "disc golf" to receive the special tournament rates. Address and telephone numbers are listed below. We look forward to having you come and enjoy our beautiful city and our world class disc golf course.

Hey Everyone,

How far is it from san jose to santa cruz delavega golf course? I will be staying in lower san jose.

Is it windy at the course considering the ocean is 15 minutes away?

thanks for the info dudes!

Hello Daniel,

Do you know exactly where in "lower" San Jose you are staying? San Jose is pretty big and the traffic scenarios can come into play depending on where you are/ freeway access etc. I would guess that it would take you about 45 minutes depending on traffic and starting point.

It can get windy at the course, typically in the afternoon. The course sits atop a few different canyons that all have unique wind patterns varying through out the day, but there is no consistent prevailing wind direction. Coming from Texas, I wouldn't expect you would think it was a windy course. The steep and fast greens become very tricky with even a subtle wind though, so it doesn't take much.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

I didn't play the whole course today, but here is what I know:
Hole (long or Short) (side; Left or Rt)

8A RT
10 L
11 L R
12 L RT CHIMES
Didn't play 13-15, but assume longest

Is there anything we should know about the course flora or insects we should concern ourselves with? In other words is there man eater spiders or monster venus flytraps or even just poison ivy?

MrJB
Apr 06 2010, 02:51 AM
Hello all,

We do have some Poison Oak on the course, and there is a lot of it. It looks very similar to poison Ivy, but with a leaf that looks more like an oak tree leaf than an ivy leaf. The best thing to do about it is avoid all contact with the stuff, but if you are sensitive to it, wear long pants and maybe long sleeves. The oil can stay on your clothes so be careful if you go into it to wash your clothes promptly. If you get it on your skin, conventional wisdom is to not disturb it, unless you have some Technu, which is a product designed to wash it off as soon as it gets on you. Otherwise take a cold shower and wash thoroughly with soap. Cold water will shrink your pores and hopefully prevent the oil from getting inside your skin. Otherwise we don't have many other natural hazards such as spiders etc. Occasionally you will run into large gopher snakes, but they are not poisonous and are seldom seen anyway.

Here are some descriptions of the holes:

http://delaveagadiscgolf.com/course-info/hole-descriptions.html

The text and images do a pretty good job of describing what you are up against. As far as the holes go, there is a good mix of righty and lefty, but most holes are not more than 360'. Some are, but it is more of a technical course than a power course. You will be well served to be able to throw approaches with both spins, ie forehand and backhand. I would also work on a forehand roller for approaches as well, there are times when it will save you strokes out there. Heck, you could hire me to play a practice round with you if you want to know all the routes ;) Oh, and chimes is what locals call 12's hardest position that is across a canyon; there used to be wind chimes in a tree near the basket. You can choose to throw over the canyon, but it is a relatively narrow fairway, and, if you hit a tree half way, you can be 150 feet from the hole, and 50' below it, surrounded by trees, hoping to get out of there with a double. Unfortunately, the "safe route" isn't that easy and can leave you with a tough par as well. You'll see. A big forehand is a great way to play it, but I mean BIG.

We did produce a course guide a few years back, and we might have some still available for sale, I'm not sure. They were about $8 if memory serves, pm me and I can put you in contact with someone from the club who has them. I don't think they are going to be in the players pack this year, but they were in there a few years back.

JB

Basically, the majority of the holes are technical control shots, you want a strong 250-350 control game. There are plenty of holes to air it out on though. The hole 12A, a long forehand is probably 300... I played this baby blind and brought all the wrong discs... got +22 the first day and then improved to +10... Only need 2-3 long distance drivers at most.
I'm bringing buzzes, stalkers, cheetah, gazelles, broken in eagles, teebirds, valkyries.. and a few boss-destroyers...

Hey John,

San Jose International would be the major airport, it is about an hours drive to the course. Sometimes you can find cheap flights on small carriers into the Monterey airport too. About the same drive time, but a much smaller airport with fewer flights.

Hi everyone,

Being a TD has its pleasures but also has its tribulations. No matter how hard you try to ensure everything goes smoothly, it seems there will always be very large bumps in the road. Believe me - you have no idea...

I wanted to take a moment to explain to you how this thing works and where we are.

We cut off online registration when the total number of players begins to get close to the maximum number we can accept. This is done to accommodate players who have mailed in their registrations. You see - the problem is we can't know how many players have already mailed it in or when.

The mail in registrations are then sorted by by date of receipt and division. After that, they are sorted by order of "when you called" (and I have taken a LOT of calls folks...). This is done in the utmost effort to be fair to ALL players. There is NO favoritism.

I know everyone wants to play and it really does break my heart to put players on the waiting list. Mostly because I personally share your enthusiasm and desire to compete and be a part of this event. Disc Golf continues to gain popularity and as many of you already know - tournaments fill up very quickly these days. The PRO NT is already on waiting list status and it is more than a month away.

We have pushed the number of players to the limit again this year.

I know you are all looking at the PDGA website and thinking 'there are 143 players, why can't I get in". I understand your bewilderment and frustration, but we have been working to finalize the field and we did not want to upload the player list until we were sure it is absolutely correct. This takes time. I apologize for the delays, but I hope you understand the difficulty of this task and I greatly appreciate your patience.

The final list should be uploaded to PDGA.com by the end of the weekend and tee times to follow shortly thereafter.

If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, complaints, etc - please send me an email message (delaveagadaviar@gmail.com) and I will do my best to address them all.

Thank you.

Daviar

Just a heads up... the prices that were listed earlier for the Ramada are for weekday nights, weekends go up at least $10 plus tax and fees etc... So it's not 20 percent saved as agreed with the PDGA, 2nd NT I've gone to that the hotel jacks up the prices regardless of sponsorship or marketing agreement. Not the TD's fault, just shady marketing strategy by the hotels..
Camping at New Brighton state park was awesome.
The course was in great shape during AM weekend, definitely punishing on those rollaways and ninja branches.

MrJB
May 13 2010, 12:38 PM
Sorry about the hotel Snap, don't know what to tell you on that one. Santa Cruz is a tourist town though.

Hey Kenny,

J. Michael looks to have switched to Open. I might do the same looking at the field size of it compared to Masters:

Current Registration

Open 79
Women 16
Masters 33
Grandmasters 25
Senior Grandmasters 7

I'm thinking he did some serious odds calculations to make the switch ;)

The Course is SET!!! Jason Esper calls it the "Soul Crush" layout- everything long with 25 and 26a set in ultra long tournament only positions. 23 now has a new position in between the old two positions, 30' longer and, you guessed it, on the edge of the canyon. 17, "the lady" is in as well.

Wow, it's almost here...

Hey JB,

What is the ultra-long position for 25? I'm in Prague at the moment, so I can't run up there to check (or Czech?) it out! I was lucky enough to play the new 23 position--I like it. Can get a birdie with a good drive, but otherwise a lot of 3s and maybe a few 4s.

And 26a is in the super long spot? Back by the seasonal pond? Wow, that's burly!

See ya soon!
Steve

MrJB
May 16 2010, 11:46 PM
Hey Steve,

I'm having a hard time believing that you don't remember 25 ultra long? You know, about 60 feet up the hill from the regular long? I guess I have to cut you some slack since you were sick as a dog during last years tournament ;) And yes, 26a is in the ultra long by the seasonal pond and there is now OB running along both sides of the fairway landing zone, so it is going to play more like a placement midrange drive for a lot of players. For guys who can throw far and straight, the ob stops about 20' past the short pin on the right side and the left side ob widens a bit as well. Daviar may change it before the start, but for now, that's how it is.

Hope Prague is treating you well...

See you friday! whoohooo!!

Wow! What a windy day. DeLa usually has no wind, but today there were dustdevils and leaves going everywhere.

Looks like Phil Arthur had the best MPM score at -2, and I think Patrick Brown is right behind him at -1. I am sure both of them will shoot at least -5 or -6 tomorrow.

It will be interesting to see how the MPO players finish. I thought the leader would be about -10 or -11 after Rd 1, but with this wind, it might drop a little.

Awesome round by Scott Riley in MPG at -1! Very solid.

Cheers,

May 22 2010, 07:48 PM
Another windy day! Very bizarre. I really like the fact that only a couple of MPM are shooting under (just barely), and everyone else is battling to stay in low single digits. Unlike many other tournaments (including Worlds) where people are -20 after 2 rounds, shooting even here is excellent.

Given the new pin positions, mandatories, and roped OB, DeLa in the LONG is back to being a World-class course. While it is fun to watch the top players shoot -14 in the short, having a third or more of the field in the red just seems wrong.

This year the new course layout, combined with the wind, has made DeLa a monumental challenge. Come and play it on Monday to see for yourself! Hopefully they'll keep the super long layout for another week or so...

Cheers,
Steve

Well, there should be better coverage of players by the PDGA, particularly the ones that are not the "usual suspects", like Patrick Brown in the MPM division, who is on a tear at the moment, just picked up by INNOVA and will continue to make serious noise... Hopefully he'll be on the cover of the PDGA magazine in the near future instead of someone we already know.

And to set the record straight, the Trophy is in honor of Steady Ed, and is the biggest part of the MCup, much more so than the winner or anyone playing in the tournament. To even be considered for that particular Trophy is HUGE, and it deserves a full photo. Look at the list of prior winners (most are current or future Hall of Famers) to gain a better appreciation and understanding.

Steady Ed's trophy story is on the home page - try doing something most youngsters fail to do theses days - read and gather all your facts before jumping to conclusions - whether or not not you like this Brian (if memory serves - you don't seem to like ANY Executive director that is named Brian - H or G)
The decision makers felt he was deserving - it doesn't matter what you or I think.

My playing attitude (even as it improves over the past) will ALWAYS overwhelm all of the good things I have done in this sport - so I don't think I'll ever have a shot at the Hall of Fame - and even though I meet all the other criterias for the hall I'll never get in - and I understand that - attitude will always be what is first seen and everything else said or done will always be looked at with jaded eyes because of it.

I like you and I understand you and your ideas, and agree with some of them, but I see them from someone who knows that the way they are presented will mean that it will take ions or other people to put them forawrd to ever have a chance to be seen.

Hawk, Mikey and others in the past have always gone about saying the right things the wrong way - and therefore any good that may have been in the messages - never gets heard because of the way it's presented.

You're a college guy - try researching the stories and then you won't have to come back later and apologize for not knowing about what you are commenting on :)

I'll see you at Vibram, since you won't be at Worlds and I'll talk at you then.

Keith
