Come try to break a World Record or watch the big guns go for one including Christian
Sandstrom's Open Division World Record throw of 250 meters (820 ft) set in 2002.
The elevation and weather combine to make this one of the premier sites in the world
for flying disc distance throwing. Two World Records were set at this event last year.
The World Flying Disc Federation currently lists 4 World records set at this site.
This means you have an excellent chance (actually up to 45 excellent chances) of
throwing your longest throw ever – maybe even a World Record!
More info. and signup here: http://www.scientificdiscgolf.com/HDDC2010.html
Special request. Marc Jarvis threw the 3rd longest throw of all time last year. There is a decent chance that, given the right conditions, Christian Sandstrom's record of 820 feet could be broken. Even if you are not interested in participating, if you are interested in watching/witnessing any or all of this event or helping to officiate, your participation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Matt, will do. You should come give it a try. BTW, that throw was today in practice. He never threw that far here before so word travels fast or someone was exaggerating.

Update: 2 April 2010
I will be arriving in Ontario airport 10 AM the 16th. We'll meet at Whiskey Pete's at 3PM like last year just outside the entrance near the lobby. My cell phone number is 336 259 0382 if there is any confusion. My plane does not leave until late Sunday so we should have all of Sunday if desired to throw. This year entry is free. Please let me know if you are coming so I can prepare enough trophies.
Entrants: So far we have Mark Jarvis, David Wiggins Jr, Don Blake, Buster Brown and Andy Lehman.
Possible (I have not heard for sure) are Marc Molnar, Jeff Stoops, and Suzette Simmons. There is room for more so if you know anyone interested, let me know.

Can he do it!
After an impressive 703ft throw at Bowling Green KY for the distance competition, can the 14 year old phenom David Wiggins Jr. be the first person to hold every aged distance title (other than womens)!!?
This is history in the making, i'm looking forward to a good results and a new Open mens distance world record by the end of Sunday.
Best of luck buddy!!!

We are here in the desert and getting ready to head over to the lake bed and throw.
Keep an eye here as we will hopefully update as much as we can.
Also, feel free to add me on Facebook (Robert Leonard, Raleigh, NC network) as I will be taking lots of photos and uploading them as we go.
Time to head over!
Winds are pretty calm right now

Day One saw some pretty poor conditions for throwing distance as winds never really topped 15 MPH and usually were about 10 MPH after very patient and long waits by the throwers.
Dave Wiggins, Jr. and Marc Jarvis both threw in the 185 meter range, which is roughly 600 feet and they got the longest throws of the day.
One world record did fall yesterday as Andrew Lemann set the World Record for SuperClass discs for a grandmaster throwing a 167 gram Zephyr 109 meters.
Marc also tried for the superclass open record but fell about about 10 meters short.
We did have some video issues as the only film we got was on the I Phone of mine, but we did get Andrew's throw on film and we will do our best to get it online soon.
Conditions don't look good again today but we will see what will happen!

No wind at all today. Wind meter often read 0.0 mph. uggghhh. Nobody threw more than 5 throws. Saving it up for tomorrow hopefully. Yesterday wind was steady at 5mph with occassional gusts recorded on the wind meter at 10-15, but these lasted only a second or two and no one really caught one.
Interesting observation: While this elevation is superior for distance with wind (esp 15 -25 mph) it is inferior without wind - there is not as much air to keep the disc aloft and the disc just falls out of the air with little glide . With wind - a disc thrown into the crosswind has adequate air for glide and lift.
Sun at 5PM winds 11 - 14 mph are predicted. If this pans out we might get some good throws then. Keeping our fingers crossed.

Sunday the winds were better but still not enough for a world record.
As far as the event goes, Jarvis was the technical "winner" throwing 209 meters.
However many people set their personal bests which was the goal of the event!
On a side note, the Wiggins and I missed our flight back home to Raleigh by 2 min and right now, 10:11 Pacific, we are still in cali.

Distance conditions were "OK" at VA States (sustained 15+ mph wind, but radically changing direction from head to tail to cross to some combo of the three at the drop of a hat). Best hucks: Naved Hasnain 187 yards on Saturday & Jack Cooksey 190 yards on Sunday. Cooksey takes the victory.
On a side note, I would have expected nothing less hilarious than a missed flight from MTL! :D

Scientific Disc Golf is willing to sponsor a distance throwing event for $500 that would be comply with WFDF guidleines for a record setting event and be located on a suitable flat area 3000 feet above sea level or more. We will also help with the very simple paperwork as well as volunteering as staff. The event would preferably take place this spring.
please let me know if you are aware of a venue and/or are interested.
thanks,

I'm organizing another distance event for the Primm area this spring. It will be April 13,14, 15. I have permission to use Roach Dry Lake bed near the same casinos we have used in the past. Roach Lake bed is on the south side of I-40 on the East side of the casinos. The format will be the same as it has been in the past, and held under all the rules of the WFDF for flying disc distance records.

255 meters, did you say 255 meters, way to go Lil Big Wig. I would have to pack a sack lunch just to retrieve that one. If I can throw 255 ft, that means after my 3rd throw, Lil Big Wig and I would be at the same position on a course. WOW. Good Job Lil Wig, proud of ya buddy.

Today conditions were not as good as yesterday. We met at 10 AM but it was raining and the lake bed was muddy. By noon things had dried up and the lake bed was dry. The wind was inconsistent 3 mph to 15 mph but not steady and diminished throughout the day. most throwers did not throw 3 sets due to insufficient winds. There were a couple new throwers and a couple personal bests set. Best throws as follows:
Jeff Stoops 140 meters
Suzette Simmons 101 meters - NEW PERSONAL BEST
John Hime 160 meters
Joey Madrid 188 meters
Erin Hemmings 204 meters
Marc Jarvis 220 meters
Shawn Stokes 147 meters - NEW PERSONAL BEST
Justin Anderson 130 meters - NEW PERSONAL BEST
Tamara Conley 65.5 meters - NEW PERSONAL BEST
David Wiggins Jr. 229 meters

FWIW, I chose the date for this event based on 3 considerations.
Most importantly, I had the time available. I work many weekends and do not have every weekend off. I had to work the weekend prior to this event.
Second, it is before April 23rd, David Wiggins Jr's birthday. since he has been 9 years old we have been doing distance record attempts in the spring before his birthday to qualify for an age group record.
Third, it was over David Jr's week of spring break. He is enrolled in a very difficult High School academic program called IB (International Baccalaureate). He cannot afford to miss a lot of school.
This date conflicted with several other events. Almost any date would do that. In fact, we missed the Dogwood Crosstown in Raleigh, an event we love to do and have been doing for years. That is unfortunate, but everyone has to work within their personal limitations and having the event this weekend was the best I could do given mine.
I did try to publicize the event as widely as possible and especially to known throwers. Everyone who had the weekend off could have chosen to do the HDDC #3 or another event based on their own personal sets of priorities.
Short story. The timing was not perfect, but it was the best I could do. No one who wanted to participate was turned away.
