Once again, the first weekend in March (6-7) brings the Earlewood Classic.

This is one of the hottest tickets in disc golf---last year it filled in just 4 hours!

This year's date to stick to the computer and be ready to click is February 1. (I'm not sure if the time has been set yet).

I was going to say welcome to the 21st century, but then I remembered the baskets with hats. So, nevermind. :D

Jan 25 2010, 03:56 PM
Hey, those baskets are futuristic!

One day the PDGA will see the folly of the DROT debates and mandate dome-topped baskets. And decide that putting should be about accuracy, not hitting a 2' wide set of chains any ole' place.

Nah.

Your "Nah"...

...you mean I can't still hope???????????????????????

Oh, you can still hope. I suggest you continue breathing while you do.......

Earlewood, for anyone peering in and not familiar, is definitely Old School. Designed for a much different disc technology---but, oddly enough, still lots of fun. Big hills, big trees, some fast greens with lots of rollaways, and every hole's unique. The baskets are ancient with narrow chains and a domed top---not to solve the issue of discs landing on top, but purposed to hold lights.

The Earlewood Classic has occured at this time of year since before discs had beveled edges. It is very popular due to its popularity, which I know doesn't make sense, but since everyone knows it fills quickly, everyone hurries to get in, with the resultant spiral of ever-faster registrations.

The "welcome to the 21st century" remark referred to the fact that, until last year, registration was only by snail mail. Or at least overnight express mail.

Please pass it along to anyone who might be interested, and post on discussion boards around SC, NC, & GA. This PDGA board isn't used nearly as heavily as it once was.

Be honorable. Don't wait until you know you're in to let your buddies know.

Hey,

Since this may be the first experience at DGU for some players, we wanted to pass along a tip. Players will need to have a DGU account to register. Go to http://discgolfunited.com/join-now/index.cfm/memb_level/Shopper to setup a free account ahead of time to save yourself valuable time on Feb 1st. Feel free to call or write DGU if:

* You already have a DGU account, but forgot your username and password
* Or have any other questions about registration or setting up an account.

The Disc Golf United contact is Adrian Southern. You can reach Adrian at [email protected] or 800-476-3968.

Take care,
Harold

Yeah, looks like fine weather. Still not as exciting as the registration was, though.

For those who've played the Earlewood Classic and other tournaments over the years----the building will be torn down immediately after the Classic. If you have a nostalgic vein, this will be our last event in this wonderful and familiar old building.

(The Parks Dept. headquarters will be built in its place, to our understanding with meeting rooms, hopefully even better facilities. But I, for one, will still miss the current building when it's gone).

MICHAELMART
Mar 02 2010, 08:20 AM
are they still talking about possibly taking out hold 1 and 10?

davidsauls
Mar 02 2010, 09:09 AM
Uncertain.

When the city first met with us about the building, they said no, but if the new building will be 2 or 3 times as big, it seems likely that these holes will at least be altered. Perhaps the new building will come to where the sidewalk now is on #10?

Very likely that during construction, holes 1 & 10 will be affected. That includes the Throwing For Tomorrow and March Madness tournaments.

Then again, we're not entirely in the loop. Witness the walking trails being installed up and across half the fairways. And I'm much further out of the loop than the more active club members.

MICHAELMART
Mar 02 2010, 09:40 PM
Well I gotta say taking the building to the teepad of the sidewalk on 10 would be cool...Then make creek and beyond OB...That would take man 2's off that hole for the time being until us locals figure out how to throw straight down the pipe...I wouldn't have to worry about ever hitting the tree or windows on the building to the right and being OB again :) I'm down for upgrading the park for sure. Now if we can just get all the gangsta's off the BBALL court making the most raquet imaginable to man...Hopefully since Chris from Strange Disc Sports is coming we can set him up on the BBALL court and have him bring his stadium speakers and Jam out...Atleast it will be enjoyable, upbeat, jive current music. Chris knows how to put on a show! If you've never played in a Strange Disc Tour event, you have no clue what your missing. This man brings out 45+ players in 30 degree weather in a non sanctioned event!

Actually, creek-&-beyond on #10 is only O.B. at the Earlewood Classic. Not played that way at the South Carolina Championships, March Madness, (probably not) Throwing for Tomorrow (fundraiser), weekly doubles, or casual play. Partly because there's a land bridge that would have to be marked to define OB, and partly because the Earlewood Classic is limited to higher divisions, so the course is strung a little tighter.

But creeks & beyond have been O.B. at the Earlewood Classic for a number of years now. Not just on 10, but 3, 12, 13, 18, and anywhere else you manage to throw over a creek.

As far as I know, #4 will again be roped into an island hole.

Yes, 5 & 6 too. Unlike the others, 5 & 6 are OB at the S.C. Championships as well. Ed ropes the deep ditch so you don't have to play out of it and by the time he's finished, you might as well run the rope the rest of the way. It's a killer if you're like me and go OB WAY back near the tee....in 3 of the 4 rounds. But in casual play, we play out of the ditch.

Hole 17 is always roped for both events as well, but not local or casual play.

My favorite OB is #17. The best is when you go OB, then your putt hits the dome and rolls back OB right between your legs.

I really do not like the way the Ed ropes the drainage opening on #17. The rope travels in a nice arc until this spot, then he kinks it around the drain so there is an extra rectangle of extra OB space? I prefer natural OB, or at least a natural OB flow. Are you felling my vibe?

It is a privilege to play #18 at the classic or any other time. One of my favorite aces.

There is no such thing as "natural OB".

Everything is considered in bounds until the course designer and/or tournament director decides otherwise.

Mar 05 2010, 10:39 AM
As a footnote, the story is that #17 is roped because, when Earlewood was originally installed, the road went around there. So the rope restores it to its original design, sort-of.

Not sure why the deviation around the drain, unless it's to prevent people from trying to play a shot that might go in the drain. Which I've never seen in all my years of bad shots. But there might be a better reason I haven't thought of.

I've campaigned from time-to-time to bring the rope all the way along the old road, making it an island hole, so that if you kick off the tree to the #18 teepad (one of my specialties) you're O.B. And to make the amphitheatre seats O.B. You can never have too much O.B. Right, Trophy-Lakers?

I've been in the drain! It was over 10 years ago, but I remember sticking my feet in the drain, sitting on the ground, and flinging my upshot. What makes it even better is that the drive was a lefty-hyzer, so the shot had to land and then roll 'back' into the drain.

Don't know how widespread this was, but in the groups I was in and in sight of, the Earlewood Rollers were out in full force. Some years I've talked about them and then they don't happen, but this year I saw more rollaways, including long and really crazy ones, than I've seen in years.

Richard
Mar 08 2010, 11:16 AM
I witnessed my fair share too. Fortunately none of them were mine. I wish I could have blamed my poor performance on rollaways. For me it was the bogey band all weekend. Just a few inches to high on a lot of putts. Oh well, a great time was had by all and I can't wait until next year.

For those who didn't get in....and those who didn't get enough....and those who SWEAR they can shoot better at Earlewood than the scores they posted....

Reminder that there are two 1-day events in just 3 weeks.

Saturday, March 27 is Throwing for Tomorrow, a sanctioned fundraiser.

Sunday, March 28 is March Madness, non-sanctioned. Management has been turned over to Darrell Lambrecht but I'm pretty sure it's still a match play tournament, and probably mostly the same as in years past, with perhaps a few tweaks & improvements.

Pick either one or make it a weekend and play both!

I'm not the one to thank.

It's Ed Garris, our longtime TD, and Dave Cannon, who handles club & SCDGO websites and the PDGA electronic stuff.

I deserve far less credit for the Earlewood Classic than might appear from my walking around on stage. My time is absorbed by Stoney Hill, and I'm little help at Earlewood. I knew enough to pass along about the TD report only because I'm club treasurer, and had been notified to send the PDGA the monies owed.

Thanks for coming. Glad you had a good tournament.
