Stumptown Disc Golf is partnering again this year with KEEN footwear in conjunction with HukLab, Innova & Next Adventure to bring you the 2010 Beaver State Fling (www.beaverstatefling.com). The setting for the event will be Milo McIver State Park’s two Riverbend 18 hole courses that parallel the magnificent Clackamas River in Estacada, Oregon. The event traditionally takes place on Memorial Day weekend and will follow suite again this year. Tournament Directors Jeff Mittl and Mike Phillips are again joining forces to bring the event back to the National Tour and are challenging themselves and their staff to deliver another high caliber tournament. This event has a storied past and tradition for excellence which continues to draw top level disc golfers back to the grandeur of the Pacific Northwest.
This year we plan to build upon the festival feel from last year. There will be more side events to entertain the masses during and after rounds: including the epic mini disc golf course, a putting competition and a skills contest. Changes are being made to the courses to improve the playability, flow as well as spectator accessibility to course play. We will be using both the East and West courses which are played as pro par sixty with lengths in excess of 8000 feet. Camping will be offered again on site this year with more space for RV’s and tent campers, including a space for Thursday camping arrivals. Reservations for the parks designated campground can be made at www.reserveamerica.com.
We will be offering 160 Professional spots this year for the NT and 144 Amateur spots for the A-Tier event. We are hoping more ladies will make the trip this year to compete for the crown and help round out the field of competitors. The professional divisions will be playing 2 rounds again on Friday, competing for the mid day tee times on Saturday. Their final round will be on Sunday to wrap up the weekend competition. The Amateur Division will be playing two rounds on Saturday with tee times. The first round will be in the morning and the second round will be in the later part of the afternoon. The third and final round will be with tee times on Sunday morning.
This year’s registration has been split between two different dates. The NT Open Divisions can register on March 1st and the A-Tier Amateur Divisions will open on March 15th. All registrations will be taken through online sign up with spots being held for the necessary touring card members & National Tour Champions per the NT agreement.
Sign up on the event website for the email news letter, we will be sending out the time registration opens around the 25th of February.

Hello Mike,
I'm curious what changes you are considering making to the layout?
We are going to tweak a few holes with either a pin position change or switching to an alternate tee pad. We are also considering making the access road in the park OB on or over, as this is the main thoroughfare we are encouraging spectators to travel on to catch the action. The courses will still be rated a par 60 and around 9000 feet so no big changes there. However we are really trying to make a push to increase the spectatorship at this years event. In doing so we need to make sure the infrastructure is there to support them without jeopardizing the flow on the course for the competitors.
We are having a warm up PDGA B-Tier event at Milo McIver run by Mike Suchocki on April 10th-11th called the McIver 3PO. Here is the tournament page http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=9953 (http://www.pdga.com/discussion/../tournament-results?TournID=9953). We are hoping to have the course setup exactly as the Beaver State Fling to allow those of you who want a crack at the course in a setting other than an NT pressure situation.
Here is the registration form:

I think the current sign up method for NT events is so pour I'll not be a pdga member next year. Unlike a lot of players who have rich families and time to sit around computers I have to work a lot. Because I couldn't sit in front of a computer at exactly 7 PM my time yesterday to sign up for the only US Open qualifying event in my area I can't now even try and qualify.
Here is what is a lot better, as used by just about any other major sport. Open the sign up for 2 weeks, then rank the players that get to show up based on ratings, not luck. I know two people going that are just going for the "experience" and have no chance of being competitive, I really trained all winter for this event and being I can't make it won't even waste my time joining the pdga next year if this is how it works. That is the biggest tournaments just take whoever is lucky enough to sign up and whoever is unbusy enough to sit around a computer 24/7.

I understand where you are coming from, however, the TDs of this event did tell everyone EXACTLY when the registration was going to go live. Why did they go to the trouble of telling everyone that? Because this is an awesome event with a history of filling up VERY QUICKLY. Last year the AM side filled up so fast that many AMs started pouring in to the Pro side just for the opportunity to play and this left a lot of Pros out in the cold. To try to alleviate that problem this year, The TDs of this event went with stepped registration to try to make sure pro players were able to get in. Even with those changes the event filled up in about 26 minutes or so.
While I feel badly for anyone who does not get to play this event, I will say the sellout times are a testament to the Beaver State Fling staff & Milo McIver State Park.
I'd like to see the first two weeks of all NT registrations reserved for players who have paid PRO PDGA dues. At least that way I'd feel I got a little something for that extra money I pay.

Yes agreed they are a great tribute to the staff and event, can't think of a bigger sign that they are doing things right. I don't hang out the discussion board here much (ever I think?) but as the sport grows and the bigger events sell out in 20 minutes a better system should be discussed. My thoughts:
Open registration for 2 to 4 weeks, or have a registration deadline. Since it is a National Event take the open spots not taken by touring pros and give them to the highest rated players, then order the waiting list by player rating. It only seems fair that the best rated players should get to play in the biggest tour events. I'd probably not make the cut. But I'd feel this is much more fair. Some people like me have a job that is based around emergencies. I had no control over a situation last night. I therefore don't even get the opportunity to play in a tournament that is a supposed qualifier for the US Open. I don't even get to sign up. The biggest tournament of the northwest has the players based on who is lucky and has free time, not based on who throws the best disc. The system favors people who live off trust funds or their parents, that is all I'm saying, and isn't fair to people that have chosen careers where the schedule can be a bit rough. The system has nothing to do with how good you throw disc.

Well as a 40 yr old working stiff with a kid and a mortgage, no trust fund, and little free time I still got in. And you're right, it had nothing to do with how well I throw a disc. No matter how this registration was handled, someone was going to get shut out. I thought this was a very reasonable and fair way to do it. I know plenty of people who paid attention, had back-up plans, and made sure they were in position to register. Some of them got in, and some of them didn't. I also know people who forgot about it, or waited until an hour after it opened, or didn't have a back-up plan to get registered. None of them got in.
It's got nothing to do with trust funds, being rich, or living off your parents.

Just wanted to keep the vibe more positive and wish everyone the best in the tournament. Much like life (and disc golf) it will never be truly fair. I think the tournament will be great, I could end up there from the waiting list, and otherwise just wish those attending the best of luck and good times. I really hoped to post discussion about handling tournament entry as the sport grows.

If you are on the wait list please do not sign up again, it makes it difficult to have an accurate number plus we are always having to check for duplicate entries.
We will be sending out emails to those on the wait list in batches of 30 people to sign up for the event. In the email will be the link you need to use to register. We are doing this to preserve the wait list order and not just flood the registration again. If you share the link with other people it kind of defeats this purpose and creates more work for us as we have to refund their entry fee if they were not on the list of recipients.
We hope to have the first wave of registrations up tonight and then we will update it every couple of days as the batches of people register.
Thank you disc golf world for you patience and understanding!

It seems there is a little confusion on whether or not registration is closed or not. We are currently still using a wait list sign up format but we wanted to let everyone know that we still have room for competitors within the Pro Women, Pro Masters and Pro Grandmaster divisions at this year’s event. If you would like to register to play please fill out the Pro Waitlist in the store, http://www.beaverstatefling.com/2010/pro_waitlist
After I receive your wait list request I will send you an email with a link to sign up for the event. We currently have 20 Open Women, over 50 Pro Masters and over 20 Pro Grandmasters. Our goal is to try to allow all that want to compete a chance to do so. Obviously we have a limit but currently there is plenty of room for these divisions.
If you are an Open Men competitor you are encouraged to also sign up for the event if you want to play. We currently have people on the wait list to fill the remaining spots but if those contacted do not complete registration within their window of opportunity we will contact the next set of players on the wait list.

Hey Mike,
Getting Very Stoked for BSF!
So from earlier post, are you making that paved sidewalk that forms the South side of 14 E OB for the entire length of the hole? Would it then be OB on 17 W as well?
When can we find out what holes are you changing tees or pins from last year?

Sorry I have not updated it lately for the Amateur side due to my time limitations with work and event preparations. No one has dropped or been added so there has been no movement. I will update it this weekend when I have a little more time to update it.
We are working on the New Caddie Book and we should have it online for your viewing pleasure real soon. Yes The access road south of 14 East http://www.beaverstatefling.com/2010/course_east has been discussed as being OB and if it was it would be for all holes that do not cross the road during the play of the hole. This could include 6E, 14E, 15E & 17W. As it gets finalized I will let you know, but these changes would be put in place for spectator safety reasons.

Camping is in two different sites near the west course, no reservation needed $6 per person a night and includes parking. Hard to say on the campers to toilets as there are two big restrooms on the course and the ones across the park at the state park campground, it's not overworked and the state park staff keep things tidy. There are a few powered outlets if you're resourceful. Check the website for sponsor hotels, there are a couple of nice options. www.beaverstatefling.com

First round is under way and we are getting some rain off and on. We are expecting the scores to be off the mark a little with temperatures in the mid 50's.
We are planning to have live scoring going later today if we do not have any technical difficulties.

If you read the Twitter feed from the live coverage, Phill had knee trouble and withdrew after two holes of the last round. http://twitter.com/pdgalive/status/14986159687

Ah thanks. Usually when someone withdraws you still see their name on the scoreboard, just with a 999 for whichever round they don't finish. (Like Will Larson and Nick Sanchez in the Open division)

That feature video on Christian is awesome! More videos like that need to be made to really show some of the characteristics of our sports big players. Bringing more name recognition to the sport is a sure way to boost its appeal.
Really great video!

Actually, Phil never tee'd of for the 2nd Round. Tested his knee on Sat Morning and decided he couldnt go. Not sure where he hurt it, I played with him Friday and he never showed any signs of injury nor did he ever say anything about tweeking it.
Best wishes to him........

As much as I enjoyed Christian's story on the PDGA home page and how the final round played out, I was a little disappointed the article didn't go into the other divisions, how they played out or even who won. Seems like they all deserve some recognition. So way to go Open Women Champ Liz Carr, Masters Champ Patrick Brown and Grandmasters Champ Jeff Fiedler!!!

Hey kid and everyone else... just a bit disappointed to see alot of quick "complaints" about speed of scores and updates at national tour events from you and others, but when the BSF staff combined their efforts to deliver rapid fire twitter updates and live scoring during the final round, there is nothing positive out of you and anyone else? How about a huge round of applause for the staff to deliver what I would think is the best team effort of any national tour event this year to bring live news to the audience *other than live feed video*.

The Twitter feed was great.......I just didn't know about it until Chuck posted what happened to Phil.
IMO it is also better than charging to see a few holes on video........esp with the live pics.
I still wish scores would have been up before midnight (central time). It didn't seem "quick" to me as I waited a few hours before posting.
Anyway from everything I hear the BSF crew does a great job and I plan on attending next year.

Yeah even though they said he got 4th when he really tied for 3rd (looking to the left is hard) and Paige was still in High School it was a good article...........still no pics of Brad though.

Next time we hope to have some of the issues worked out with posting of scores and such. We were updating the scores as we could and still performing the duties of score checking and leader board work for the local spectators. Scores for the last round were being updated as we went but perhaps not as fast as they could be. Remember we are on Tee Times for all 4 rounds and cards trickle in one or two at a time. On the final day as other groups were finishing their rounds and heading back to tournament central they were caught up in the action on the lead card and followed the action back to TC. This delayed score checking and updates a bit. However the event was completed by 4 pm on Sunday and the scores were live on PDGA by 5 pm at the latest.
We collect all hole scores and then translate them to final scorecards by player in each round. We also do this within our own website, something that is a bit slow for updates but something that will be improved each time it is used.
Look at the scoring link to see the individual score cards for everyone in the NT. Just click on their name, check out Bradley Williams score card for round 2!
2010 Beaver State Fling Scores (http://www.beaverstatefling.com/2010/2010_nt_scoring)
I also noticed some mistakes in the article that you would have to be familiar with the event to notice but still all the same it is unfortunate to see mistakes in print.

The scoring was great the last day if you ask me!
The 1st day was the only time they seemed to be a little slow. There were two rounds with the last group going off at 4pm so I was hoping to start seeing scores around 8-9 Pacific time.
Anyway it wasn't a big deal and you guys did a great job from what I have heard (and not just this year) and I also congratulate you on having more MPOs then the World Championships.

15 east is on a mound and about 60-70 feet to the left is OB, either he went OB on the drive and 3 putt, had some bad misses and roll aways? Guess you'll have to ask him about that and his awesome ace on the island...
There are alot of errors in the articles on the pdga front page about the last round espeically the horse situation on hole 16, they were about 25 feet out, not 13. And Nikko hit the tree in the middle of the fairway on hole 11 and there is no dogleg on that hole from what I know. I'll have a video of the final round up before tomorrow night. There were at least 2 other good video guys out there with me... As for the twitter, that was up to date by the minute or even the second.
Ahh bradley answered while I typed... focus is everything I guess...

I can't wait to see the video! Everything I have seen recently is better than the Worlds videos the PDGA charges the "Pros" to produce.
Thanks for the response Cactus!

Actually that is just a knock on the production company that the PDGA uses to do the vid. I will stand behind my statement that there are youtube videos which are much better including the Dynamic Discs vids, Swedish awesomeness, and even the Masters Cup and BSF films.
Plus since only Pros are charged to be filmed I figured we could say something.

As long as he decided to finally dump that other crew I am content!
Really though I wish Ray would have been given a better chance when he put in a bid only to be told that they liked the old company and its product.
