Has anyone developed an iPhone app with a course directory on it?

Would be handy.

First off are we talking about the hole by hole directory or course by course directory? It matters because if you have hole #1 as the coordinates to the course it may be nowhere near a road or parking lot so help is needed!!

I have entered in a contract with the PDGA to create a GPS directory for the membership - One such natural extension of this is a iPhone App, Goggle Earth file and upload able Points of interest files for Garmins, Tom Toms etc..

The first thing we need to have happen is the course directory needed to be updated and everyone can help!!!! We need the parking lot coordinates to the course right now the first hole is in the directory and for instance if the first hole is near a Highway a GPS enabled device would have you pull off to the side of the highway a park there since it closest to the road First hole coordinates are fine for the general getting around but road to road and driving directions will need a parking lot or an intersection etc for us to get a true GPS driving directions directory!!!

There are other Points that are going to be included in this file - such as Disc Golf Vendors and stores, restaurants and bars, hotels camping etc...this is known as a "tour guide" and it can become a great way for sponsors of a course or tournament to get some ROI from their investment by having people all year round find their establishments etc...

If you know of a iPhone App developer I would be very interested in talking with them

A guy named Matt Ryan from Lubbock told me that he is making an app with the pdga's blessing to be used for a variety of things disc golf related. Haven't seen it yet though.

iPhone is such old news now, esp with all the new Android 2.x devices like the Droid.

Don't lock in to a single vendor or device whatever you do. Anyhow, this discussion is pretty pointless if you have an iPhone or Droid as they include FULL WEB BROWSERS!

The coordinates are the key to any system for this use...It will not matter what vendor, hardware, mobile device that the end user ends up using...the file that is the output from this process can be imported into just about any program or appbut the first key is getting to Long/Lat for the courses For example States or local clubs can use the file to create a Google earth snap shot of the area (just like Minnesota and Oregon has)So the possibilities are endless but the key to getting it up and running on any system is updating the PDGA directory with the proper coordinates

If every golfer took it upon themselves to just look up 2 courses and post updated coordinates to the directory (Google earth is a great tool not the most accurate but it gets the job done) we could have a working beta file by spring..

First things first we need to get the directory updated for the courses! Secondly the beta tests will be on Garmin’s, Tom Toms, Magellan’s etc and Goggle Earth first. These units and applications can upload a simple CSV file (excel) and don't need separate apps to develop.

But what I would do is research what the GPS capabilities are of that unit to see if it can accept customized files?
