Just saw the listing for Rookie of the year and want to give a shout out to 2 Charlotte guys sitting on the list so far ... BigJerm and Buddy!!!
Is this being voted on or will it be decided strictly by the numbers? seems like the 'touring card' holders voted in the past but I wasn't sure.
Also curious if the guys on the list can hurt their standing if they play in an event and do poorly from here on or if its something where they only look at the best finishes for the numbers. I see this on the POY/ROY page and it appears it would only be their best but its still kinda vague. I guess i'm a numbers guy and curious how things get calculated.
"ony events that are B-tier or higher where at least 54 holes are played can count toward the standings. In addition to their Average Rating shown here, the finalists' Average Rating at Worlds and Finish Percentage (100% is best) in their best events are part of the final awards calculation."
Regardless... congrats to all ROY on the list and it looks like some of the women need to get out and play a few more events to be eligible... may the best man & woman win!

No vote any more. The full process is explained in the Details doc:

Yeah but it also seemed like a few years players won without the best stats. I wish a hybris system could have been created with a vote counting as 30-40%

for this year we could always have 'fun' and put a poll up on here when the final 6 are decided to see what the outcome is. Someone could do the same if they started a thread for the POY
question... didn't they use to take into account how much cash someone had won throughout the year? might be imagining it but thought it came into play for POY and possibly ROY.

Yea and it should be included. Ratings only mean so much and in truth they shouldn't decide who had a better year.

i believe voting should still be part of it, attempting to completely quantify such awards diminishes them imo.

There was significant debate about having voting be a percentage but it was decided that it couldn't be done fairly for our sport at this point in time. Most of the 200+ players who could vote before didn't vote. In addition, with the exception of the higher profile Players of the Year candidates, most voters didn't know them and had never seen them play, especially the Rookies.
It was also determined that the POY and ROY awards should not be popularity contests and in fact that is the case for these awards in many other sports. In ones where voting is a factor, the pro players are widely known and the voters have seen and even played with the candidates. We have several other awards that involve sportsmanship or running events where popularity does make sense as a factor and those will continue to be determined by voting.

I ran The Best Tournament Ever... I should be in the running for any award that involves running events.

as a caluclated candidate, it's a little frustrating to be thrown into this with a few weeks left in 2009 trying to find a 54 hole or better A or B tier to get into this!
especially living in the northeast, where pdga tounaments are not as widespread (anne lewis is probably in the same situation being from vermont).
if we had known that these were the requirements, we would have had these events under our belts months ago...
now i'm searching for plane tickets to florida in 3 days and spending over a thousand dollars... probably not going to happen :-(

This story was posted on the PDGA website on June 4th with the criteria:
http://www.pdga.com/new-awards-process
In the case of Rookie of the Year candidates, the number of events requirement has been relaxed to five from the seven originally posted. We'll try to get some posting earlier in the year in 2010. However from a practical standpoint, very few candidates, especially rookies, have played enough events that qualify where TD reports have been turned and rated until after the Worlds ratings update. So September will likely be the first full POY ROY standings update each year.
We hope to eventually get the Event Ratings added as a new column as a new stat for every PDGA member's event page and indicate whether the event qualifies to be in a player's current top events. This way, players will know earlier in the year how they are coming along.
Good luck to the candidates. I've been contacted by several who said they are trying to get into some events before the end of 2009.

what should be understood is that not everyone checks the pdga website. so in the case of ROY and POY- specifications should have been sent out in the membership renewal letter and/or emails to those elgible, and then posted several different times. maybe it has been??- but just last week when the newest post was up on the pdga main website- was the first time i ever saw it either. not really fair for those trying to find last minute tourneys that are nearly impossible to get to now. just curious- when were the criteria/guidelines decided upon?? because if the first time they were made public was june 4th- that doesn't seem right.

it would be cheaper to get an official's card and sanction and run your own event than to try to fly somewhere just to meet qualifying criteria.

Yes, it would have been nice if the final criteria were published earlier. Not that many members tend to review Board minutes, but changing to an automated process for POY & ROY was in the January 2009 minutes: http://www.pdga.com/files/documents/2009-1-07BODMeetingMinutesApproved.pdf (http://www.pdga.com/files/documents/2009-1-07BODMeetingMinutesApproved.pdf)
Consider that Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year have been PDGA awards for over 20 years now. Regardless of the selection process, players have had to do well in many events to earn the award. That hasn't changed. In fact, the requirements are probably less than before since voters would likely have been impressed by a player who entered and did well in more events. Now, it's only a smaller set of each player's best performances.
Those who were planning to go for the award this year would have been making the effort in events from the beginning of the year, not trying to rush to play a few more events late in the year. Knowing what the new criteria were for the awards wouldn't have made the potential candidates throw any better in the events they planned to play.
One thing that will hopefully be done better in the future is identifying Rookie candidates early in the year who don't realize they are in their official year of eligibility. While the criteria for when a player's rookie year occurs has been the same for many years, I suspect that many ams do not know what those criteria are. Ams who accept cash for the first time after an Am Worlds will have their rookie year as the following year. They are easy to identify since their renewal status for that next year changes from Am to Pro.
However, if an Am accepts cash for the first time before Am Worlds, then that year automatically becomes their rookie year. Many times the PDGA will not know this until mid-year when tournament reports finally get submitted showing the Am has finally accepted cash.

we actually thought of this, but it was really too late to make anything happen.
we had a c tier scheduled at warwick 5 days from when i found out about ROY... it didn't really make sense to give the pdga a few hundred more dollars in b-tier fees (vs c) just to get me qualified (although i would have been the one putting up most of the added money).
buuttt, we probably would have hosted my girls jayne and anne to round out their qualifications for ROY also (and any other unqualified rookie ladies looking for a nice 54-hole B-tier in NOVEMBER!).
ultimately, i/we should have known what the criteria were that were posted on june 4.
let's try to make these guidelines/rules more visible for future candidates.
thanks guys - good luck!

I think the ROY awards process is probably mysterious to most rookies because they are practicing a lot and playing a lot trying to make the jump to pro, and not reading a lot of back pages on PDGA.com.
The same is true of the points obelisks. Besides Tom McManus and myself, how many players sit down in January, calculate their obelisk strategy, and then have a family meeting to see if we're going for one this year? Players who are playing so many tournaments that they win one are not posting on message boards. Except for Tom and me.

Maureen- I agree with you. Living in Minnesota, B-tiers or better end early. We had snow falling the first week of October. I was fortunate enough to be able to get to the closest b-tier (in IL) that was still left and qualified. It was a 7 hour drive, but I was able to make the trip. I am also fortunate enough to have some connections in SC to get to one or more events there and only have to spend 300-400 total for each of those trips. After this weekend in SC, I will at least have enough events in to be qualified.
I think that if I were not a college student, I wouldn't have been able to get to these events. It's kind of ironic because in the summer I wasn't playing as many events as I wanted to due to being a broke college student. My profs have been cool about me missing a day here and a day there. I totally understand where you are coming from. Working a "real" job and having to ask for time off last minute usually doesn't fly. Coming up with the money to get to an event out of your region sucks! It sucks when you only have one chance at this and you didn't even realize the criteria until it's nearly too late. I want you and Anne to be able to qualify so that all of us can have our fair run at the title (along with Haley and the other candidates). I'm really hoping you can find a way to get to one or two more events (check out the Charleston Classic Dec 4-5. I'm hoping to play it and would love to play it with you ladies!!!)
Chuck- I can understand not posting the standings until after worlds. But yes, for future ROY candidates, it would be awesome if the PDGA could make sure these criteria are available sooner in the year. We can't change what's happened in the past, but we can try to improve things in the future. It is what it is. Maybe it is true that many of the ROY candidates never get on these boards, but they have the access to them and know that if they need info they can either hop on the site and look for it or call the PDGA office and ask about it.
That's my 2 cents. Good luck to all the rest of the ROY candidates!

Is anyone really surprised to see Doot on there after several warnings from myself and Dave Vincent among others that he had ripped them off, even while others in his local circle were saying what a great trusting soul he was.
0n the other hand, I am surprised to see Tony Ellis and Mace on there.

There will be an update in the standings in the next week but there are still around 60 events to be processed for the yearend standings. There are additional factors that are then calcualted for the finalists once the yearened ratings are completed. Not sure when the final standings and ROY/POY winners will be presented by the PDGA office.

Standings will continue to be updated here: http://www.pdga.com/player-rookie-of-the-year-awards I'm hopeful there will be IT resources available so the website can be programmed to display players' event ratings on their stats page next year making it easier to see which events will be counting towards ROY or POY.

The system is so flawed it isn't even funny. All you have to do it have 4 hot events during the year and you win regardless of how you finished in the rest.
All events should count for POY/ROY and had I known this would have been the new system I would have voted differently in the survey....because the way it was worded seemed like a good system was already produced which obviously isn't true.

Well... I did FINALLY get a job (yay for a college degree that's going unused for now). School bus driving (insert comments about school bus driving on The Simpsons with headphones)! Haha. It's a job. I know- maybe someone will hire me to drive their RV in the summer and in turn I get to travel for free??? Yeah right. ANYWAYS, I'd love to travel to a few bigger events if I can afford it his summer. Otherwise I will have to hold off until 2011.
Hmm.... you should come to the Majestic NT. I can find anyone a place to stay that's coming out. I know a FEW disc golfers in MN. Haha.
