The VPO is almost upon us! We're split into two weekends this year again. All amateur divisions will be October 17-18 (B-tier), and all Pro divisions will be Oct. 31 - Nov. 1 (A-tier).
This year promises to be as big or bigger than last year--you won't want to miss it.
Details for the format and schedule, and registration can be found at www.titledisc.com or you may contact me for a registration form. We are limiting the field to 90 players for each weekend, so make sure you sign up early if you want to play.
Many thanks to our title sponsor, SandalFarm Firewood for their generous donation!

Been looking at the leaderboard for the USDGC and, besides being enthralled in that competition, I couldn't help but notice all of the past VPO champions . There are nine years worth of titles in the top twenty. The current World Champion, Avery, will be defending his title this year and his buddy, Feldburg, has yet to get his name on our champions list. One noteworthy tidbit, Dallas' own J.D. Rameriz is on the same card with Climo (former VPO champ) today for the final round. Looking good J.D.

I believe that NT requirements are such that you must have non-natural teepads on every hole, a so temp course would not work.
But let's focus on THIS YEAR! We have 44 players signed up for the Am weekend--that's 1 shy of half full. Better get to registering if you plan on playing! I will be out at the course all afternoon if you want to pay in person.

Using Turner Park in GP is another option. Pretty sure at least the Pros would love the layout. And it's only 20 minutes from the Vet.
Vest, if you haven't already seen it, there's an interesting discussion on adding an NT in Texas in the Announcements folder (I think). Many ideas being tossed around.

Everything defaults the unofficial ratings calculation to 18 holes, par 54.
Chuck, if you read this--Round 3 of the VPO Am weekend is as follows:
Advanced and Advanced Masters played a 10074 foot 24 hole par 78 layout.
Intermediate, Recreational, and Junior <19 played a 8254 foot 24 hole par 73 layout.
Thanks to everyone for all of their help this weekend. I think things ended up going pretty well. We need a few tweaks here and there on the new layout, but overall I think it was quite good.

The Pro weekend is shaping up to be very good. I've been looking over the numbers, and it looks like we will be able to add about $4500 cash to the pro purse, possibly more if we can get a few more sponsors rolling in over the next two weeks.

Then whoever enters the scores needs to input the correct courses. It is not something the PDGA does, it is somethingthe TD(or whoever the scoring input person is) is supposed
to do.
It is one of the easier things to do and yet several Events fail to do this simple process. :(

Great weekend of disc golf. Couldn't have asked for much better conditions, except for maybe the wind on Sunday. :) Everyone I talked to agreed that it was a well-run event in keeping with the tradition of the VPO. Loved the Champ layout, but a few suggestions:
#2- Plays as a tough par 4, even without the mando line in the fairway at ~250ft. Would either do away with the mando or trim the fairway 2-3ft on either side, so it's more a test of accuracy than luck to get the 3 or 4. I managed the 4 (so I'm not whining), but 2 of the others in my group came up a few feet short of the line and had to take drops 50ft back down the fairway.
#11- Thought the clown's mouth idea was great. Would definitely keep it for the Pro weekend.
#12- Tee box is much too small for a par 5 hole. Moving the tee to the grass in front of the the concrete slab in the woods, and then using a temp basket placed under the tree behind the long basket would make for a great hole.
Hole B- Even as short as the hole is, it was very difficult to reach with the low canopy, headwind and up-sloping fairway. Trimming the overhang even 1 ft would make a big difference and lead to a greater score distribution. Off the top of your head, do you know how many 2's were taken?
Thought the list would be longer, but the more I thought about it, the other holes were fair and challenging. Thanks again for all your hard work and a wonderful weekend of golf.

Thanks for the kind words and the constructive criticism. Any time we make a tweak to the course, I am always curious to hear how it works in practice.
#2 - I think I might move the OB line closer to the tee, and allow the player to choose between a re-tee or a difficult drop zone rather than force a drop.
#11 - Thanks. I was really trying to focus the entire round on placement shots instead of "Heave and hope".
#12 - I have played off this box a number of times and have never noticed. I will make sure to check it out again. I may just need to mulch around the pad.
Hole B - I had a tough time choosing the exact position for the tee. I wanted to keep the sidewalk and any pedestrians as out of play as possible, and to be honest I was expecting Saturday's north wind to prevail all weekend. This hole may or may not get used during the pro weekend.
I am still working to try and figure out a way to throw off the dam over the pond for the pro weekend without making players walk far from the previous hole or after finishing this hole.
I could not have managed this weekend without the help from all of the staffers and spotters.

i also heard several people suggest that we not use that tee on hole 12. i think a teepad in the grass would be just fine. or maybe throwing from a spot on the sidewalk.
the new location for hole C's teepad has been a long time coming, good job on that. hole D was really cool, im not sure about hole E though

Glad you're so open to suggestions, Greg.
#2- Might be more appealing to go for it and take the re-tee if the OB line is played with the Bunc'r rule (distance but no stroke to re-tee). Otherwise, even with a difficult drop zone, it'd be a no brainer to take the drop instead of stroke and distance.
Hole B would be a good one to scrap. Our group on Sunday thought it would make a good hole to play from near 13's tee to Alt A's basket, with OB line up the left side of the fairway. Using Alt B and C from last year (the holes that play toward the road across the sidewalk, and then back toward the parking lot) would be fun if possible. I wasn't crazy about Alt E this year either, probably because it played uphill, into the wind, on a strong anny line, but I'm sure it didn't help that Land Nut 2'd it. Moving Alt F's pin closer to the fence was devious.

Thanks for your suggestions. Your idea on Alt A (which we used last year minus the OB) would work only if we took hole 13 out of play. I am trying to avoid having to walk all over the place just to get to the next hole, and I don't want to not use any of the existing 18 on the course.
My biggest concern in using the Alt B and C from last year was the proximity of the tee box on Alt B and the pin for Alt C. I know on my card last year, we had some problems with discs from Alt C coming way too close to the tee box on Alt B, especially with a strong south wind.
Alt E might play a little better if I can get permission to do a little tree trimming on the limb overhanging just across the sidewalk. But then again, that was part of the reason I put the tee box there. :)
I really want to put the shot across the pond into play again this year. If anyone wants to help me scope out temp holes after the mini this Sunday, I would be open to the assistance.

I am totally with you on keeping all of the originals in play, i was really happy we got to play 13 champ.
So this might not work but I'm just throwing out a few ideas. if we nixed temp A and B. and put all 6 temps after hole 17. temp A would be the reverse of temp F. then we could play the old layout up to the pond by the street (i liked that hole), then the pond hole, then two holes over in the field to the north of the entrance, and the last temp hole would be the old hole just west of the pond, then you would just walk in front of the theater down the sidewalk to champ 18....just a thought (is that six?)

All 6 temps after hole 17 seems like a viable option, but I'd hate to lose Alts C, D or F in their current layout. Which side of the pond is the dam on? North or South? If it's on the North side, Alts C and D could be the 1st and 2nd Alts, then a temp hole could be played from the southeast corner of the pavilion parking lot toward the street (Alt C), then the pond hole would be Alt D and Alts E and F from this year wouldn't need to be changed. Just another idea.

the **** tee is on the south side, i liked temp D but C, E, and F were nothing special. If we didnt have temp C they could play champ 15 and 17, teeing off on 17 from just in front of the pavillion.

Went out and played the course yesterday with Dixon Jowers. Looks great! We played the champion layout and I didnt see any problems with any of the things you guys are discussing, although I didnt play the temp holes. My only concern is hole 3. I heard how it was played for the am weekend, and I am not sure its the best thing. I really appreciate the work and effort Greg and others have put into this weekend!! I just think that this hole was a little too much. I think the basket placement is fine, no worries there. But making that hole with all the ob and an island green is a little much. Its a tough hole as is, and asking players to land on a 15 foot green through a 6 foot gap in the trees is not the best thing in the world. I can tell you right now you will see a TON of 4s on that hole. Very few of us will go for the green on the second shot, its just to small. My suggestion would be to get rid of the island and all the ob. However if there has to be an island and ob, make the island a 30 foot circle. More people would go for it that way. Just my .02. Keep up the good work guys!! Look forward to another great VPO!

Skip and I spent about an hour yesterday figuring out where to play the 6 temp holes for this weekend and still keep a good flow with minimal walking between holes.
Hole A:
After hole 13, players will go back toward the street and throw parallel to the street toward the flowerbed in the front corner of the park. Sidewalk OB will come into play on this hole.
Hole B:
Teeing off from the sidewalk to the northeast of the basket from A. Basket will be under the trees behind the two backstops.
Then players will play a championship tee pad for 14, which will be a hard dogleg left. Tee box will be near the playground, facing along the treeline. There will be a mando in play on this hole, forcing you to play the dogleg around the corner, to avoid throws around the picnic table areas.
Hole C:
After finishing hole 17, this hole is essentially a longer version of the reverse of old hole 9 (last week's Hole F), playing with the OB fence along the right to a basket up and to the left once you make it through the trees.
Hole D:
Throwing across the pond off the dam. Basket will be placed about 30 feet short of the driveway of the park entrance. This one won't be far left on the peninsula as in years past to avoid having to throw over the parking lot.
Hole E:
Teebox near the veterans monument playing to a basket under the trees next to the restrooms.
Hole F:
Reverse of old hole 1 (last week's hole C), playing from the sidewalk leading into the pavilion down the hill to a basket tucked behind the small scrub trees, about 15 feet in from the OB sidewalk on the left. From there, you go right to championship 18's box.
Looks like a fun layout. Hope everyone enjoys it!

We also have had some top rate Masters champs too, so come on down and give us a look. If we get the size of a field we're hoping for, our first place check will be near $2000. Hope to see you here.

Last change to register is:
Via Titledisc: 9 PM, Friday 10/30
At the park: ??? (Saturday @ 8:15 AM?)
Players Mtg: 8:30 AM
1st round teeoff: 9 AM - 18 holes - short and long positions
2nd round teeoff: TBA, approx 1 hr after last card turned in - 18 holes - long position
Sunday:
Only one round: 9AM teeoff - 24 holes - mix of concrete tees, Championships tees (which has GOTTA include the sphincter-puckering Mt. Arlington teebox), and temp holes.
After the round, optional Ace in the Oaks.
Have I got it right? My only big ? is how late can I sign up on Saturday morning? I intend to use titledisc, but I may not know before it is cut off on Friday evening if I can attend or not.
Thanks, and I hope to make it there, if only for the opportunity to fall down the hill from Mt. Arlington's tee.

Wow, what a field. This is going to be a good one and thanks to Greg it will be every bit deserving of this class of competition. One thing though, where is Coda? The two time champ should be here. Coda we want to see you, man. Also, I wish Mitch Mc and Clint would show. They were here in the begining in '91.

I am pretty sure I will be making it this weekend only thing is that I am kinda low on funds and if possible need to find a place to stay or else try to pimp some discs to already sponsored players.
Anyway if anyone has a possible place give me a call at 936-328-0503 and remember............I can fit into small corners.

to my knowledge, mitch and clint are not going. they aren't riding with coda, but i haven't talked to them specifically. they did just win some money at the OO, maybe they will come, your guess is as good as mine.

VPO field is set. I just cut off TitleDisc registration. Right now, we have a total of 42 players in Open, 1 Open Woman, 6 Masters, and 6 Grandmasters. Should be a great weekend! See you all bright and early.

WORD!!! I know it's a long shot but it would be AWESOME if the Crowler could pull it off.
I gotta gripe about the payout....with all that added cash, pay both of the Open Women. Gotta keep the ladies coming back.
Take $50 off that $1700 for Open and give it to
Female Pro
1st $350
2nd $50
Throw the home girl a bone, buy her a meal, she's going up against one of the best in the country.
Gotta say I miss the ole Veterans Park, my home course for a year wayyyyy back in the day

For all those who haven't made it to arlington for the VPO... you gotta go! Tons of free food and great people. Thanks Greg for hosting such a well run event. Even if you don't play your best golf game, you will have fun! Even though I didn't get any of that cash, the payout was really nice.

Greg, what was the reason for the par 80 vs 78 layout for Sunday during the pro weekend? Which changes did you make from 2 weeks ago? How well were they received by those who played both weekends? Thanks.

We changed the temp holes from what was played on the Am weekend. One of the temps was a par 4--throwing off the levee across the pond. That one was about 530 feet and required very good placement shots. The other change was the use of a championship tee for hole 14 which turned it into a par 4.
