I have been giving some thought to the idea of having an Ace Race at Knob Hill.
In years past we have had the Discraft Ace Race. It appears that this year nobody is going to step up and run it. However with Knobulus Maximus coming up I would like to try to generate some funds. The funding comes easy for our other events since Jerry puts on those awesome course championship fundraisers.
I was thinking having two rounds from the red tees to the A Pins. We are planning to have some signage soon for the red tees. It would be nice to get these in before the Ace Race and Knobulus. I still have to check the calendar to find a good date. Cost would be $20 and 50% would go to the winner and the other 50% to the event. We can have CTPs and raffle prizes also. Go ahead and vote on the poll. If enough people show an interest, we can make it happen

I'm too focused on Knobulus to deal with a Discraft Ace Race also. I checked it out and the discs need to be pre-ordered, this causes a variety of hurdles that I am not willing to deal with. Someone else would need to run it. I would like to see it happen, anybody willing to raise their hand???

Funding never comes easy :)
Takes lots of sponsors along with the help of the Course Championships.
But it would be nice to see the ace race again in the burgh. Though part of the joy is paying the $15 for the 2 discraft discs as well as getting all the great prizes that they send.
If you would like to raise money for Knobulus Maximus, perhaps we can make our next Knob Hill Monthly $15 with the $5 going to the Knobulus Maximus along with the $2 PFDS fee donated to the event as well? It might only raise $100, but it's a start.
What other ways can get some added cash to Knobulus Maximus?

Is anyone planning one yet? If not, is it cool with everyone if Tim, Katie and I set one up for Schenley?

Everyone - mark your calendars for Sunday, September 12 for the 2010 Discraft Ace Race to be held at Schenley Park. The event will begin at 10am - tournament HQ will be the Overlook Pavilion - below the 3rd basket/4th tee. I will make an announcement shortly announcing the start of pre-registration for the event.
The player package:
Guaranteed to be at least twice the value of your entry fee! The player pack in 2009 included two identical Discraft discs, plus a SuperColor mini and a premium ballcap. A $55 value!
For general information about what the Ace Race is, take a look at this page - http://discgolfacerace.com/index.html.
Hope that everyone will be able to participate!

Yes - pre-registration is underway - I will begin promoting this at upcoming league events. Scott - If you would like to volunteer to collect entry fees from people at monthly events - that would be appreciated.

Where can we go to pre register for the ace race? Is there a website or do we just have to get the money to someone in the PFDS?

Hey Everyone - The following information was posted on PFDS.org in promotion of the Ace Race:
When: 9 am Sunday, September 12 @ Schenley Park. Tournament HQ is the Overlook Pavilion (across from the #3 basket/#4 tee).
Format: Two rounds of 18 holes, one throw per hole per player.
Course layout: Red tees will be used, throwing to a mix of A,B, and C pin locations.
Entry fee: $25 (please include the registration form when submitting your entry)
(Pay cash to Mark Prestopnik, Tim or Katie Stouden, Scott Hartle)
or mail a check (include the registration form) to:
Mark Prestopnik
1006 Sarah Street
Apartment 2
Pittsburgh, PA 15203
(Please do not mail cash)
Player package:
- two new Ace Race prototype discs
- one premium hat
- one Supercolor Ace Race mini
- one sticker
- one die-cast, heavy duty, chrome finish bag tag <--NEW
Total player pack value: $67!
Rules of play: Players are required to use the player package discs, and only these discs. If a disc is lost, the player has the option of using the second disc from the package. Only one throw per player per hole. All players should have their own scorecards and mark "A" for aces (a hole-in-one) and "M" for holes on which they hit metal. After all players in the group have thrown, discs are picked up and the group moves directly to the next tee. Players keep their scorecards for round two, using the next line on the card to record the round. The player with the most aces after 36 holes is declared the winner. In case of ties, the number of metal hits is used as a tie breaker. If a tie persists, a closest to the pin contest is then used to determine the event winner.
Prize package: Grand prize is a Discraft merchandise package, including a bag and ten new discs.

Right now, there is not a deadline set, but that I imagine it will be around the last week of august.
If you have not heard yet, you can use $30 PFDS disc credit to lock in your entry for the ace race. This is a chance for you to use up that disc credit that you have been stockpiling.

From Discraft Ace Race Home Page:
The 2010 Ace Race prototype is a fast, overstable midrange. It has good speed for a mid, longer glide than you'll expect, and a medium strong finish. When you turn it over it will always come back unless you really torque it. Will hold a line in a moderate to strong headwind.

There's more ace runs at Schenley! :)
The Ace Race can be contested on ANY course; you just use temporary tees to make every hole an aceable 140-290 feet long. I've played Ace Races on world class courses similar to Moraine and Deer Lakes but temporary tees were used on the pro par four and pro par five holes to make them aceable. Actually, in some cases it made more sense to use a temporary basket location instead of a temporary tee. For example, if you used Moraine I might put a portable basket at the landing area on hole#12 instead of a temporary tee at the landing area and playing through the woods up to the A pin - the former would just be a much more exciting ace run. At Deer Lakes, I might do the same with a portable at the bottom of the hill on hole#3 - think of how cool an ace run that would be!
Most players however would still prefer however to use concrete tee pads instead of temporary (natural) tees, so I think that is why you see most Ace Races at shorter courses where few temporary tees are needed.

-----------------------
Players agree that this disc is a great fit between the Wasp and the Drone, and several players suggested the name Hornet. We thought that was a winner, so welcome to the hive, Hornet!
The disc is now approved for PDGA tournament play, and Ace Race copies are legal. Please spread to the word to your players.
Hornet will be released to the general public soon; we plan on running the production version in Z plastic with a max weight of 178 grams. Lower weights down to 150 may be possible.
The ESP (Ace Race) version has been given a stability rating of 2.0.
