Wow, late July already! This means we are less than 3 months away from the 32nd Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic, Waterloo Park, Austin, TX, Oct 17-18, 2009.
General Registration wont open for a while yet, so now is the perfect time to reserve your spot in this fun and historic tournament by taking the Father Dave McC-Note Challenge. Full details are below. 6 people are already in, and around now is when a bunch more start sending in their McC-Notes to reserve their spots.
Our 2009 Father Dave McC-Noters so far are:
Stevo Barnes; Mark Penniman; Jeff Moore; Larry Kruse; Del Stair; Aaron Stair
See you at Waterloooooooooooo
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Its Father Dave McC-Note Time
The way it works is this: send the Waterloo Club a check or money order for $100 now. Your spot in the tournament is guaranteed. When fees for the different divisions are set, we will deduct from your $100:
your entry fee
ace pot
ring-of-fire
non-active pdga fee (if applicable)
All the money left goes directly to the charity. In 2008, there were 55 McC-Note Challengers (even though a few ended up cancelling, this was still well over half the field). This added over $1800 to the total charitable donation!
To clarify something that has come up occasionally: this money saves your spot, not a spot. Once the tournament fills up and there is a waitlist, if you have to cancel you cant just give your spot to someone else. As with any cancellation, the spot goes to the next person on the waitlist. If you do have to cancel, you will receive a refund of everything except what would have gone to the charity (and that money will still be added to the donation).
Dont wait too long and miss out on this wonderful event. Send in your money now and you wont have to worry about it filling up without you.
Send your check or money order, payable to WDGC, to:
WDGC
PO Box 33531
Austin, TX 78764
Please include your full name, division, and pdga number (if you have one).
Thanks!!!

some additional information about Waterloo:
PDGA C-tier event
You dont have to be a Waterloo Club member or PDGA member to play, although because it is a PDGA tournament, there is an extra $10 fee for non-active PDGA members.
The tournament is at Waterloo Park in downtown Austin, between the Capitol and Brackenridge Hospital. It is a temporary course, 18 holes, that we only get to set up once per year. Each morning we put the baskets out and each night we have to bring them in.
The main tournament will be 4 rounds, 2 on Saturday And 2 on Sunday. There will also be a doubles round/tournament on Friday, usually starting about 1 pm. You dont have to be in the main tournament to play doubles.
The tournament is a whole lot of fun. Many people come back year after year, including some who played in the really early years (late 70s and early 80s). It has a big disc golf family atmosphere.
There is a limit of 90 players, and once general registration opens, it usually fills up in 5-7 days. If you want to play, but don't want to McC-Note, you'll need to mail in your registration form as soon as you get it. We use the postmark to determine date of entry so get it in the mail right away. (no on-line registration available).
Even after regular registration opens, you can still McC-Note if you want to - about 10-15 people usually do this. It no longer has the advantage of holding a spot, but it still helps out a great cause, plus we usually have some kind of "goody" for our Father Dave McC-Note Challengers. Not sure just what it will be this year, but in the past we've done things like hats, shirts, golf umbrellas, and stools.

Hey, Gordon...I wanted to see how significant this year's classic will be by confirming next year's construction of the Waller Creek Tunnel. It looks like it is on schedule. I have attached some links:
http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/wallercreek/downloads/wcmp_th_051309.pdf
http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/wallercreek/
(I have also attached a crude sketch of the possible future park layout. If you look closely, you can see underlying existing sidewalks and such.)
Do you have plans to honor the tournament as a "Farewell to Waterloo Park", or something similar?
Thanks for your TD work on this historical event!

I attended a meeting on just that subject yesterday morning. The thumbnail posted has changed somewhat but is still fairly similar to the current draft proposal they gave us yesterday. And the timelines in one of those links has changed.
Looks like we will be fine this year. In 2010 we might have to deal with some construction in the park (like work on new bathrooms and some utility trenches), but other than that we should be fine and we should have the park/course still pretty much the same.
The big question will be 2011. Once construction actually starts on the "inlet" part of the tunnel (which will be in Waterloo Park), that is when the park will be completely closed to all activity. Depending on when that work begins, we might still be able to use the park or we might be having it at a different location. If work begins about on schedule, then we will be re-locating. If it is delayed long enough, we might still be able to have the 2011 tournament at Waterloo.
Once the park closes for construction, it looks to be off-limits for at least 2 1/2 - 3 years. So we will have at least a few "Waterloo-less Waterloos". When it does re-open, we will have to do a full re-design of the course, figure out where HQ will be, etc. The park will likely look VERY VERY different than it does now.
But it will still be Waterloo Park, and it won't be the first time, or even the second or third time, that the course has been changed. We will make it through this and the Waterloo tradition will continue! :)

A quick reminder that the 32nd Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic is coming up in just 6 weeks. Regular registration will probably open before too much longer so this is a great time to reserve your spot by becoming a Father Dave McC-Note Challenger (see first post in this thread for details).
The really big push right now though is sponsorship. Im way behind on getting this out, so I could really use everyones help in getting a lot of sponsorship rounded up for this event. We not only need a lot of cash (to cover the big park reservation fee), but we also need a lot of merchandise sponsorship too. These items make up our huge raffle and silent auctions, as well as lots of CTPs for the players and other fun contests and give-aways.
The sponsorship request letter is copied below. You can get a copy of it as a Word file by emailing me at
[email protected] It will also hopefully be available for download from the club's website fairly soon (www.austindiscgolf.org).
If you, or someone, or some business you know can sponsor, we would really appreciate it. It takes a lot of folks approaching a lot of businesses to get good sponsorship, especially in these tough economic times. The money we raise for the charity will go to help out a lot of families in need, and almost all charities are having a much more difficult time getting donations these days. If you have any questions, please contact Stevo Barnes or myself.

Dear Sponsor,
The Waterloo Disc Golf Club is proud to announce that it is hosting the 32nd Annual Waterloo Disc Golf Classic at Waterloo Park in Austin, Texas. This historic disc golf tournament is the longest running tournament in the Southwestern U.S. and one of the oldest in the country. This year the dates are set for October 16-18, 2009. The 32nd Waterloo Classic will again benefit the Austin Ronald McDonald House (RMH).
The RMH is a wonderful non-profit, charitable organization that provides a home away from home for families with critically ill children undergoing treatment at area hospitals. This allows parents the chance to be close to their children when they are needed most.
Thanks to the support of our great sponsors, we have donated more than $58,000 in cash and supplies to RMH over the last eleven years. The goal for 2009 is to raise $9,000. Wont you please help by being a sponsor of this wonderful tournament? Sponsorship can be in the form of cash, merchandise, or a combination of the two.
For a sponsorship of $200 or more: your logo or name on the back of the official tournament shirt, plus on a tee-box sign. This sign will be seen by all of the competitors each time that they play the course. Your name will also be added to the Sponsor List that will be displayed at the course and distributed to the players.
For $100 - $199: your name on a tee-box sign and on the Sponsor List.
For up to $99: your name on the Sponsor List.
Please mail all sponsorship to Waterloo Disc Golf Club, PO Box 33531 Austin, TX, 78764 (checks payable to WDGC). If you wish, you may make your check payable directly to Austin Ronald McDonald House in order to get the tax benefits of a charitable donation. For more information, please contact Stevo Barnes at 512-451-2064, or Gordon Maxim-Kelley at 512-858-1615 (

Thank you for your support!

Below is the flyer for the 32nd Waterloo Disc Golf Classic. If you are interested in playing, please mail in your registration with payment as soon as possible. This event fills up every year, and it has been known to fill within as few as 5 days after registration begins, though it sometimes takes a bit longer, like 7,10, or 14 days to fill up. Anyway, dont wait. If you arent sure if you can play, my advice is to register anyway. If you have to cancel, youll get almost a complete refund. The only thing wed keep is the portion that goes to the fundraising and it will still go towards the fundraising ($4 for regular registrations; amount varies by division for McC-Notes). Plus youll make someone on the waitlist very very happy :)
Mailing the form and payment in is the BEST way to register. Postmarks are used to determine date of entry. You can also register in person with me at the Thursday Zilker events, and at the Ace Race at Zilker on Saturday, September 26th (assuming spots are still available at that point).

Dear disc golf family. I was informed this morning that Jimbo Slusher passed away last night. If you're from Houston, attended PYMWYMI or any other event at the Snow Farm, you most likely knew Jimbo and his better half, Diane Killackey. He was always in a good mood, and all about a good time. He also loved to cook for people when he was at the Snow Farm, and was pretty darned good at it. He was one of the original Moffitt Rats, and will be sorely missed in the disc golf community. Please keep Jimbo and Diane in you prayers. If you play PYMWYMI this year, along with the traditional PYMWYMIIIIII yell, give an occasional on for JIMBOOOOOOOO!!!
Thanks,
The Colonel

2 weeks! I'm ready! I'm ready! I'm ready! My baby's first Waterloo. She's not playing, but she'll have a blast. It will be the first tournament she'll have been to, and Waterloo couldn't be a better first time. By the way, Harry, you'll have to share the back seat with Hairy. That cool? haha! Got a special treat for you beer connoisseurs. Texas Chili Parlor, here we come! Hey, Shannonator, try to remember not to sneak up on Charlie while he's sleeping. hahahaha!!

Gordon,
Is there a sponsor hotel that we should stay at? I think last year, that you and us were the only Waterloo players there.
Anyone got some extra room for me and Melissa?

Carol & I have room w/2 queens @ the Studio 6 on I-35, a hair north of 290. I'm sure Carol would be fine with it if you want to be our roomies. :) Harry, you are still staying with Gordo, right?
As far as I know!
Gordo?

There is no official host hotel.
I've booked a room at the
Travelodge Austin
6200 Middle Fiskville Road
Austin, TX 78752 US
Phone: 512-454-4300
www.travelodge.com
I stayed there last year and it was decent, and the room was quiet (unlike almost any place I've stayed at along I-35; that place down south near I-35 & Ben White a few years ago was the worst - ugh!). This place is also just north of 290, very near I-35, so just a quick drive down to the park in the early morning hours.
It was $59.99 plus tax per night, but I think I saw it on Expedia for about $49.
Kent: maybe move on over?
Suemac & Aquaman?
Larry & Melissa?
Other out of town folks? Could be fun to have a number of our "further away" family all stay there.

Sorry for all the delays and lack of information. It always sucks that right around the time so much of the Waterloo stuff is bearing down, our company's fiscal year-end happening too (Sep 30th). Ah, the joys of being the "money guy". Unfortunately, neither one of those things is going to change. Ce la vie.
But, that fiscal year-end has now passed so on to Waterlooooooooo!
Thanks to our scorekeeper extraordinaire, the player's list is now posted on the pdga site http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=9615
The tournament is full and the waitlist is going strong. I have sent out all of the confirmation for the people who made it in except for a few that don't have email. If you have entered but not gotten a confirmation (and aren't on the list) please contact me and let me know.
If you'd like to be added to the waitlist, just let me know. The best ways are to send me a PM through the PDGA DISCussion Board, send me an email at
[email protected] or call me at home (512) 858-1615 and leave a message on the machine (even in Austin you may need the area code as I live in Dripping Springs and somephone companies consider that "long distance" - sheesh )
If someone withdraws, we will contact the next person on the waitlist.
I just need your name and contact info (email and/or phone number). It can help to know your division (for when we make up scorecards), but that won't affect whether or not you get in. We don't have set numbers of people in a division, so... for example: it won't help to be willing to play pro when you normally play advanced. If there is a spot for you, we'll get you in regardless of your division.
If you clear the waitlist before the tournament gets here, I'll contact you about it. Otherwise, the only thing you have to do is be there Saturday morning at tourney HQ when check-in closes at 8:30 am. Tournament HQ is at the wooden deck near Trinity & E. 13th Street. If anyone drops out at the last minute or hasn't checked in, we'll drop them and fill their spot with someone from the waitlist.
If you are on the waitlist, don't despair. Even if you are far down on the list, there is always hope. At least twice in the last few years, everyone on the list who chose to show up Saturday morning actually made it in. However, to be fair in expectations, we have had other years where not many folks (or none) have cancelled and so not many on the waitlist made it in.
Thanks,
Gordon

Well, probably just stick with Studio 6, Gordo. $53.00 per night (+ tax, of course). Right behind a steak house. :) Hey, I'll be sliding into that Adv GM slot next year (Maybe just GM....we'll see).

Uhhhh....Melissa booked us a room at a nearby hotel - Super 8 I think for about $60 a night. She said that it is two blocks from the park. That sounds pretty appealing...I can grab an extra 15 minutes of sleep then!

I was looking at the current divisions and I'm hoping some baggers have already made some appropriate changes. For example, there are some pretty high ratings in the Advanced Grandmasters. With the advent of a Pro Grandmasters division, I would think that some players with ratings over 900 would like to compete for some money with the pros. What I'm saying is...
MOVE UP!
Yeah, I'm talking to Man McMueller!

gee win a tourney once in awhile and watch the hate seep to the surface :) , i thought mark and i were playing in our appropriate ranked division based on ratings, if you consistently place does that mean you must move up despite your # ranking?
i can't see playing open/pro if it messes up chances to compete in the worlds + looking at the PGM's in this tourney it looks like we should all be in the same division based on ratings. i will accept this slander as the supreme compliment of a fellow competitor and offer the following advice... PLAY BETTER!! or play rec. peace and love, looking forward to the weekend and the opportunity to compete against the better ranked golfers than myself and the rest of the field, heck it's waterloo all you have to do is hit some putts.

Our Divine Reserve is a series of single batch beers, each brewed with a completely different recipe. The batches are identified by the number on the neck label. There is no particular theme to the beers, although it can be assumed that most all of them will be big. Many will benefit from being aged under refrigeration, not at room temperature.
Since we brew such small batches, and the releases are closely watched by our loyal fans, the Divine Reserve sells out quickly! Sign up for the Saint Arnold Newsletter to be alerted to future releases.
Reserve No. 8: Scotch Ale (long gone from stores, but coming to Waterloo ;) )
Cases Made: 1,504
Kegs Made: 29 1/2 bbls, 2 1/6 bbl
Date Brewed: July 6, 2009
Date Bottled: August 20, 2009
Original Gravity: 1.091
Final Gravity: 1.024
Alcohol: 9.3% ABV
Description:
This is a bold, malty, smoky Scotch Ale. It pours a deep amber brown. It was quite cloudy at the time of bottling, but will clarify as it ages. The nose is full of smoky toffee notes. The taste opens with sweet malt and spice, then the alcohol comes up with a light residual sweetness on the finish. A balanced smoky flavor is in this beer from start to finish, although it never is the dominant character. It was brewed with 2-Row, Biscuit, Dark Crystal, Amber, Peated, Caramunich and Wheat malt. It is hopped early with Hallertau Tradition and late with Hallertau Hersbrucker. We fermented DR8 with a traditional Scotch Ale yeast. It is unfiltered. Enjoy at 45F or warmer. This beer was inspired by Phillip Kaufmans winning entry in the 2009 Big Batch Brew Bash.

Things you need to know about this years
Waterloo Disc Golf Classic, Oct 16-18, 2009
Tournament Check-In:
Waterloo Park is located in downtown Austin. It is bordered by E.15th, Red River, E.12th, and Trinity. Tournament HQ is on the wooden deck near Trinity & E.13th.
This is VERY IMPORTANT! Everyone registered for the main singles tournament must check-in either Friday October 17th between 1 pm and dark, or Saturday morning October 17th between 7:30 am 8:30 am. Anyone not checked in by 8:30 am on Saturday will be dropped from the tournament and the spot will be filled by someone on the waitlist. The tournament is too popular, too fun, and usually has too big a waitlist to let a spot go unclaimed. If you are on the waitlist, you must be at tourney HQ at 8:30 am on Saturday. If your name is called and you arent there, we go to the next person on the list.
Please try to check in on Friday, as it will make Saturday morning go much more smoothly if we dont have as many people to run through the process.
Everyone playing the main tournament will receive a great players package.
Juniors who want to play Waterloo: We will register Juniors on Friday during check-in or on Saturday morning during the first round. Juniors will play one round per day in-between the main rounds. We already have one Junior pre-registered and wed love to have some more, so bring out your kids, or your friends kids. The cost is $20 and theyll receive some stuff for signing up plus well make sure that every kid who plays wins at least something. The number of kids and their ages will determine whether we have different divisions or not.
Doubles:
Friday October 16th, flex start 1 pm 4:30/4:45 -ish. Open to everyone, $10 per person, bring your own partner. We will have to stop accepting teams around 4:30 4:45 pm, so that everyone who starts will be able to finish before dark. Results will be posted as soon as possible on Saturday. Awards for doubles will be ready by lunch on Sunday the 18th. Leave contact info when signing up if you wont be around on Sunday. In 2008, we pushed over 65 teams through on Friday, so the course plays fairly quickly. Show up early for the best chance to play, dont wait until late in the afternoon and take a chance on being turned away. Cards will be limited to 2 teams to keep things flowing smoothly.
You can play more than once, but you must play in a different division AND with a different partner. (no longer will one team take 1st and 2nd, or 1st in both open and masters :) ). There will be an optional ace pot for doubles, $2 per person. If no aces are hit on Friday then the money will go towards the fundraising.
If you want to play on Friday, you should sign up and play doubles. Otherwise youll have to wait until after about 4:30 - 4:45 pm. This is when well stop teeing off the doubles teams. Youll need to start on hole #1, behind the doubles teams (not just anywhere in the course that looks open). We always battle to get as many doubles teams as possible through the course before dark, so just like on Saturday and Sunday we cant have them waiting on casual players.
Directions and Parking for Waterloo:
If you are coming from IH-35, head towards downtown. Take the E.15th Street exit. Go west (turn left if you are driving north, right if you are driving south). The next traffic light is Red River, you will see the park on your left (the Erwin Special Events Center is on your right).
If you are headed for the parking garage, go two more blocks and turn left on San Jacinto. San Jacinto is a One-Way street going south. Go two blocks and turn left on E. 13th, the entrance to the garage is immediately on your left. You can also enter this same garage from Trinity, right across from the deck (Trinity is a One-Way street going north). Be sure to read parking info below - we don't want anyone getting ticketed or towed.
Parking shouldnt be too difficult this weekend. On Friday, the state parking garages on Trinity, across the street from the park, will not be available until after 5 pm. On Saturday and Sunday, they should be available for free parking at all times (at least thats what we know of right now). For other parking, there is a small lot in the park (enter off of 12th Street) that will be free all 3 days. There are also parking meters on Red River, 12th, 13th, and 14th streets, and some on Trinity and Brazos. You will have to pay the meters on Friday until about 5 or 6 pm, but they should be free the rest of the weekend (be sure to check the actual meter for exact times you must pay).
Charity Fundraising:
Just like last year, we are going to have two auctions instead of one. We will have one auction on Saturday and second, completely separate, auction on Sunday. On Saturday morning, well put out a bunch of items. They will be on display on the deck, and there will be a bid sheet by each item. Bidding will close at the end of the day on Saturday so when your second round is over, be sure to hang around, make some final bids, and collect your winnings. Well do the same thing on Sunday with a whole new set of items, and well close Sundays auction at the beginning of the awards ceremony. The silent auctions will have all sorts of great things from the small, to the large, to the really cool collectible.
Giant Raffle: Typically our raffle has over $1,000 worth of prizes, and tickets are only $1, or you can get 6 tickets for $5. Raffle tickets will drawn during the 4th round on Sunday afternoon, so you can buy them all the way up until the start of that round. Winning numbers will be posted by the end of the round, and you can collect your prizes anytime after that. You do not need to be present to win a raffle prize. If you arent going to be there Sunday afternoon, just put your name and phone number on the back of the ticket and we will contact you after the tournament.
Proceeds from the raffle and auction go to fundraising, so bring lots of extra cash and your check book.
We also will have a box at Tournament HQ all weekend to collect canned, boxed, or packaged foods, toys for the kids, household items and every-day necessities such as toiletries, etc. These items will be used by the families that stay at the house. We will have a big box for collection, so please go through your pantry and bring out some stuff.
The Ring-of-Fire will be held Saturday afternoon, immediately before the 2nd round (hopefully about 2:00 pm). It is $2 to play, and all proceeds go to the fundraising. Everyone is eligible to play: staff, spectators, and players. You can sign up at check-in, or all the way up to the time we start it. Ring-of-Fire is a series of putting games, and it is really fun to play. It is also fun to watch, so even if you arent playing, stick around to see it.
There will be NO MULLIGANS this year. Instead, the tournament is taking part in the PDGAs Competition Endowment Program. This means that the $2 per-player PDGA fee, plus the $10 non-active member fee, is being donated to the charity instead of going to the PDGA. Thanks PDGA!!!
McHouse Concrete Challenge: Double R Disc Golf Club hosts this fun and challenging event. It is held on Hole #5 during the 4th round only (Sundays 2nd round). Double R will pay out 5-1 if you can make your disc come to rest on the concrete picnic table. The basket will be on top of the table, but anywhere on the concrete will win you 5 times what you bet. Give them $1 and win $5. Give them $20 and win $100. Good Luck!
Miscellaneous:
The Tayloe Toe Throw contest will be on Sunday afternoon, right before the 4th round (hopefully about 1:30 pm). It is free to everyone who wants to play, and well have some prizes for the longest throws. Great to watch as well; very silly, very fun!
When can you play the course if you arent in the tournament?
For those folks that aren't in the singles, and really want a chance to play the regular course with baskets, there are the usual lunch breaks on Saturday & Sunday when the players will be off the course. The Juniors will be playing the course then, but that is usually only a card or two or three. Ring-of-Fire and the Tayloe Toe Toss might affect a few of the holes, but not many. Youll need to stop playing when you hear the two minute warning for the afternoon round.
The times of the lunch breaks are hard to guess, but we hope that the course will be available around 12:30 2:30 on Saturday and noon 2:00 on Sunday. If you show up and there are still players on the course, wait until things are completely clear before starting. Well be on a tight schedule all weekend and cant really afford delays.
We always battle to get as many doubles teams as possible through the course before dark, so just like on Saturday and Sunday we cant have them waiting on casual players.

appears the ware/ miller rule is still in effect for doubles ..
You can play more than once, but you must play in a different division AND with a different partner. (no longer will one team take 1st and 2nd, or 1st in both open and masters

Good times for a great cause. The Double R DGC out did ourselves again and set a record on the carnie hole #5. $400 cash was raised and another $150 in merch went to the players. Thanks to all who participated and contributed. What was the final jug count for Southside vs. the Rock? If we find someone cashing in bottle caps instead of can tabs I'm pretty sure we would take you. Good competion for a great cause.
