-.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the 2009 Riverside Glide thread. We are looking forward to this year's Glide even though there are a few concerns. The biggest concern is parking. Carpooling is really encouraged. Even if you meet at the 31st and Riverside parking lot and park your buddies car there, it will help. Otherwise it is first come first served with the neighborhood being your next best option.

The decision to keep this a one day C Tier is due to parking concerns. If the parking is bad one day I hated to double the pain.

So, I decided to run the Glide Saturday and a non-sanctioned 36 hole event Sunday at Chandler, the Mountain Glide!!

These two events will provide for a fun filled weekend of both sanctioned and non-sanctioned Disc Golf.

I decided to keep the prices low in hopes most people will play both events. The Mountain Glide will be $25.00 for all divisions which will include CTP's and mulligans. Opting out of mulligans will lower the price a few bucks.

Riverside mini's begin tomorrow night. This will give us a couple fo weeks to check out the parking and get in a little practice for the Glide..

Let me know if you have any questions. More details to come, I'm sure..

That is a fair question Mr. Wise.

There will be 36 holes available for play, on that particular day..

Here's the main number at the Park's Dept at Chandler 591-6052, you can ask for Pat Standingbear or Mike Costa. Maybe you will have better luck than me and Furdog in getting them to complete holes 1 and 4 on the Moose Run.

Will they consider just letting some club members finish it? I know we can find the guys with the right know how and we have a great crew of volunteers that I'm sure would be willing to help so that it gets done.

Amen, I am sure that we can fill in the two elevated areas with some thing and plant two baskets. if nothing else we can always supply plenty of bull and make a muffed putt a hazard:D

I already asked them if we could finish the holes and gave them Jerry Stacey's number because he said he would personally help them, but they said they were going to do it themselves. I will call them again...

Well the course would have been done already if someone hadn't insisted on elevated two holes. :(

BTW, it's Mike Acosta not Mike Costa. That might be why he is not listening to anything you have to say. Pat Standingbear is out until the 20th.

You and I need to get together and see what we can do about adding some extra lines to some of the "poke n' hope" holes.

Something needs to be done about # 6. I don't have a problem with keeping it long but it doesn't play well now because you have to basically throw down into the dirt and hope it skips up.

I think for the "Mountain Glide" we should change a few holes around drastically to see what other options and set ups we can come up with. Like maybe throwing from # 2 pad to # 4's basket and so forth.

how about we start at the chandler entrance at the bottom of the mountain and play one long hole down the road or through the woods however you choose to hole 1 basket. since its non sanctioned, every 5 shots you are required to chug a beer, see who wins/lasts.

I have walked with Mike around the course and asked him to make changes to #2,4,5,11,12, and 16 over a month ago. These are small changes but none of them have been done. There are no poke and hope holes on the course in my opinion, only holes that need to be cleaned up or pads that need to be changed. #6 is a roller throw and that hole could be trimmed also to give the airshot a better chance. The Moose Run is probably the last course I would play in town right now because it is unfinished. They have had over 3 months to put two elevated holes in that they have had the materials for, how is that my fault? I'll be glad when the course is finished and Chandler will be a great two course facility, but for now it is simply a frustration that seems to be out of my hands (if you can't tell by my post) or atleast my time schedule.

Well I’m not blaming you but you need to understand how those park guys think. They work there everyday when they are not scrapping ice off the courthouse steps. They love DG and play all the time. They like the idea of a second course. Then we come along and design something and don’t really even ask for their input but turn around and tell them what we want them to trim, cut, and move. They treat me nice but it might be only because I grease the path with a free pizza, free shirts, discs, and other goodies just like John Green did before me.

We can personally move the tee pads anytime we want and don’t need to ask them to do it for us. We should design in a way as to keep trimming and cutting to a minimum so it doesn’t become an annual work duty for them. Number nine coming out of the woods and throwing through the bush pile is going to become an ongoing maintenance hole just to cut the vines and crap away.

All I really want from them is to mow the grass and maybe cut a limb or two every once in a while. One signature elevated basket was great but the second one is kind of redundant.

Right now I think we should look at the overall map and see if we can redirect a few holes just to see what other design variations we can come up with. The two in the woods wouldn’t change other than possibly the hole number. Is there anyway we could design something to where # 9 ended back up near the parking lot so we could have a front nine back nine set up giving access to the parking lot for water and beer refills?

I’m thinking about going out there this Saturday or Sunday and looking at other possibilities if you’re interested. We can always go back to the current design if we want to.

my only complaint about the Riverside course is that alot of the holes on the front have to stop by the basket or they are skipping OB. Mainly 6 and 7. alot of dirt by the basket and was having a hell of a time to keep stuff from sliding just a few inches out. I got there at 5 30 and my choice of several parking spots so that was a bonus. Loved being able to get a gatorade between 10-11 versus rushing to qt before the round. Beatiful weather and alot of fun even with a 1 down. Thanks to Jeremy Taylor for the CTP donation and Mike Treat for running a good show.

Riverside Glide Update:

Sign ups are starting to come in. No, we're not close to our 90 cap but there seems to be a lot of interest..

I will have sign-ups available tonight at the mini. I am not sure when or if the PDGA site will accept online entries, I have provided everything they need.

I plan on being at the course for awhile Friday night to take sign-ups. Not planning on doubles, come on it's Riverside! If someone wants to get something going, let me know..

Saturday morning we will take entries until 9:00 am. Players meeting should happen around 9:30 with tee times shortly thereafter.

There are only two rounds so hopefully we will be done semi early. The weather is supposed to give us a heat break later this week.

Sunday, Scott and Wayne are helping me run the "Mountain Glide" at Chandler.

This is two rounds of unsanctioned fun. Entry fee will be $25.00 which includes mulligans etc.

This will be a great weekend. I think everyone will like the players packs for the Glide.

Come out tonight or I will see you later in the week..

Several other are doing the same. I will hold your spot until 9:00 am Saturday. If you're not there by then I will start taking cash from those who did show up.

I have no idea if this will fill. I HAD to limit it to 90. Parking is a problem

As a TD, I often wonder if anybody will show up, you know, one of those recurring nightmares.

With that said, we had 43 people at the 1st mini last week, and several regulars weren't there..

Bottom line, first come first serve. Send me a note and your on the list. Pay by 9:00 am Saturday and your in, up to 90 people..

Don't forget, Mountain Glide Sunday will not have a limit, two courses and tons of parking..

If you haven't played the course yet or tried to park there, then thats not an infomred statement John.:( When I pulled out last night I had three cars lined up trying to get into my spot. It would be impossible to run the glide as in the past with two flights, unless you John are offering to provided all of the shuttle service from another location.
The parking lot isn't as big and the ameneites that they built attract WAY more people to the river. While the course may play out longer, it is on less land than before.

I think you're way off on this one Barton.

Parking is a problem down there John. I believe more parking was originally planned but QT for some reason backed off their support to complete it at this time. Even with 90 people on Saturday it will still be bad. God forbid but unfortunately it will probably take a DG'er getting hit crossing Riverside before QT and the city realize their mistake.

im with john on this one, parking .... give me a break. there are tons of neighborhood streets to park on and ive parked in those apartments across from hole 18 before and never had a complaint.

I know Wise won't complain about having to walk a couple blocks to get to hole 1..........

I don't think parking is any reason not to have a 2 day like normal.

Just my opinion

twoputtok
Jul 15 2009, 10:46 AM
Then you're way off too. Have you been there on a Saturday morning?

How do you think the apartments would react to another 25 cars or more in their parking lot?
On top of that there isn't a neighborhood street to park on for a few blocks north or south on Riverside. When the event was a two day, we would fill the parking lot on both sides and all of the grass areas next to Riverside. Now the number of parking spots has been reduced and the grass areas we used are gone entirely. I think Mike made the right call for this year. Better to see how its going to work out this time through and if it goes well, then YES next year make it a two day. In addition to that, everyone needs to get ready for the one day formats, they are the future for a lot of events.

I know Mike was torn over this decision but with several unknowns, he did the right thing. Like any other tournament, if you don't like the venue, the format or the TD, then it's simple, don't play. Attendance sends the biggest message to an event that they did or didn't do something right.

I understand being concerned about parking. It is an issue there at that course.

I'm just saying if you are going to have it there on saturday, you might as well do it sunday too. Especially since less park go'ers would be there on sunday morning than on Saturday.

25 cars in the apartments is an exaggeration.

I think if you wanted to keep tradition going and keep it a 2 day it wouldn't have been a big deal.

I'm fine with it being a 1 day, just expressing my opinion. Yeah I think his decision was somewhat justified, but as long as we disc golfers are aware of the issue and expect it. We can carpool, park further away, etc.

I'm just thinking there's got to be more reason than just parking to change it up.

Please don't take my comments as being unappreciative. I am very grateful to all the Tulsa TDs that show up and run the show so we can play.

I am glad you didn't cancel it, I was just expressing what I thought about the whole parking thing, I think as long as it is a known problem by the DGers, then we can find ways around it. Just a mile down the street at the bridge there is a TON of parking. Some of us who are aware of the parking issue could all meet there and just ride over in groups of 4-6.

Thanks for being the TD Mike, you do an awesome job, don't take my comments the wrong way.

Well there could be other reasons besides parking but who is going to be more likely to gripe to the parks department, DG'er's or the general public that calls in to gripe to the city because some drunk DG'er threw up or emptied their beer cans in their front yard.

Now that the place is getting more use by mothers and the little kids you should look at it as if the city stuck a dog park in the place. As always it's women and children first. I doubt whether they will pull the course but with enough complaints they could cancel future altogether.

You shouldn't assume that parking will be any better on Sunday either because you still get jogger clubs and such parking there early in the morning as well.

My thoughts were if the parking is bad to terrible for one day, why put all of you through it for two days.

Thanks for everyone's patience. Lets see how it works and hopefully we will be back to the traditional two day Glide next year...

I understand a young gun like yourself Paul would walk 10 miles to play, and I appreciate your enthusiasm. I needed to look at the entire field, and as Scott stated the other park patrons.

If the city gets a blast for us taking all the parking spots then we will have some damage control to do.

uhh im pretty sure disc golfers shouldn't barf or leave anything in home owners yards, thats just stupid and our own d*mn fault if something like that were to happen.

Yeah, a couple joggers on sunday morning, but this is Tulsa, and most people go to church on sundays. I'm just saying, probably less casuals on sunday, but thats a weak point to begin with. All in all this will be a great weekend and just because Riverside is only a one day that should not discourage anyone from playing because this weekend offers something for everyone.

The cap of 90 people should get people’s attention and force them to get off their butts and pre-register by Friday night. That helps Treat by minimizing last minute entries on Saturday morning. Though Riverside has always been a two day IMO if you can’t get it done in two rounds then four rounds isn’t going to help unless you’re hoping your competition gets drunk on Saturday and doesn’t show up on Sunday.

You should consider Sunday at Chandler your last chance for romance. I don’t get to see my friends from OKC very often so I hope they see that IMO this is still a two day event that offers 3 courses instead of one and two different fun and enjoyable atmospheres.

If you have a CS25 bag tag bring it on Sunday.

Also, I might be available on Saturday to shuttle a few players from the Moose Lodge down to the Riverside and back if anyone is interested.

I gave everything to the PDGA for online sign ups, apparently they still are not up.

Send me a PM or email and I will hold your spot until 9:00 Saturday morning.

We will have a shotgun start, not tee times. I am not sure where that came from.

I appreciate all the input, 3 rounds etc, but this deal is set, sanctioning agreement sent etc.

Please take this as a bonus, again I was inclined to just cancel as I don't want the parking to be a hassle for anyone reading this post. Trust me running a bigger longer tournament only works in my favor!!

I was trying to think of all the players. If this deal works easy, back to the norm for next year.

All changes have some growing pains. We played the west side last year, kept the Glide going.

We have a brand new course with zero funds or physical effort from the TDSA. That price is we are running this as a one day C Tier this year. Try to consider the trade offs in the long run.

We ended up with a new course and we get to keep the old 18 baskets, so two courses for the $0 price of one..

Thanks for your patience and understanding. Sunday at Chandler will be a great time as well..

maybee next year we could do 3 rounds, I have played in some 3 round tourneys and everybody likes getting home early. I think Sunday morning we would be able to park all dg'ers as long as we teed off by 830. I don't ever see alot of traffic down there till 10 am most mornings.

I appreciate the effort that TNT did put into this years tourney and I look forward to playing. Just slightly dissapointed about the doubles. I could just use the extra practice thats all. I do believe in the past however it was a twisted flyer promotion.

We exist in a very fluid environment, I wouldn't count out a little dubs actions just yet.

Any volunteers to run it?? I really need to spend some time Friday night making sure I have things like score cards and sharp pencils!!!

How much extra do I need to bring for the pencils? Will $5.00 cover a pencil or two?

Thanks for the support Dave..

I almost cancelled this thing. Lets see how it works out this year. We did include Sunday at Chandler so there are two days of golf available.

Paul, I understand you wanting a two day tournament. We are holding two tournaments, just separate.

Hey Gumby, after that one mini you ran in Bristow, all of a sudden your an expert?????????

Amazing what can happen to some peoples attitudes...

i have been going to and runing turnys in okc be for you were playing disc golf treat
i just watched you give up on every traditon that other people worked long and hard to bring to the gilde and if the course lost that much land we cant run a big turny there it should be pulled and put somewhere we can like the westside just to let everbody know that all thats said on here is from john and not karla

John, are you having a bad day??

I have never had a problem with you. I really don't understand why you decided to post on here and give me a hard time.

Nobody appreciates the hard work counteless people have done over the years and the traditions they have created more than me.

My decision wan't made in a vacuum. I consulted a lot of the members and players before making that decision.

It isn't fair to sit on the sidelines and blast people who are trying to do the right thing.

It was my responsibility to decide how to handle the Glide this year. If people disagree I understand. All I am trying to do is put on a solid, well ran tournament for everyone.

Saying the parking is a cop out in your first post is wrong. Everyone in Tulsa knows that it is an issue, hopefully one we can overcome.

Sorry that you decided to attack me like this. I know you have my cell #, you could have called me to discuss your opinions.

Again, I have always gotten along with you very well. Not sure where this is coming from..

Jul 15 2009, 09:14 PM
There is less room for disc golf on the west side of the river than on the east John.

And I think that a guy who has been in the sport as long as you have would know that counterproductive posts like the two you have made so far are bad for everyone. Including yourself.

If you really wanted to get something done you should have taken a different approach, in my opinion. Not publicly trashed one of the most reliable and consistent Td's in town.

Pops and I have always been good to you and Karla and for you to think that we wouldn't have run a two day if it was possible is disappointing.

There has never been squat for parking anytime I have ever been there.

The logical choice is to experiment. Throw it out there full tourney style day one, and hope for the best. If all is well then you are good to go for next year and any other potential events, like Woody's crow throw. (of which another edition is shortly ensuing)

If parking does turn out to be a major issue, then you aren't going to have to put disc golfers and other park patrons through that problem two days in a row.

Don't make a problem where there isn't one man.

There is still a tourney, we are testing out new space. Everything will be back to normal next year.

John, you were my former partner in GCD and we are friends but you are wrong. You need to let it go. Papa Treat has never done me wrong or anyone else I know of. Saying that, I don't think he'd try to screw up our long running tradition. He did move it last year so we could still have it at all. I did suggest things to fine tune the tourney, but they were more directed towards the future than the present. Shotgun starts is pure genius and i think it will make things much smoother. Just chill for awhile, we all still like you, just stop the one man assult. Later.

I usually don't chime in to controversial issues, but I have to say I whole heartedly agree with Papa Treat in this situation. In addition to the parking issue (which is undisputedly a HUGE issue), isn't it true that disc golf pretty much took on a "one day sanctioned event is better than a two day" approach a couple years ago. Thanks, Treat, for all you do!

Thanks Furdog..

Yes it is officially Glide Eve..

I will be at the course by 5:30 to take sign ups and if anyone want to play doubles we will make that happen too.

This evening I will set up by hole #1, there are different cool bands that play the pavilion every Friday evening, an added little fun thing..

Tomorrow you can find me on the parking lot side of the covered pavilion. There is a nice area with electricity so come there for sign-ups Saturday morning.

We don't have the old spot to do awards anymore so I am planning on setting up down by the practice basket area for awards.

I have received several emails and pm's from people wanting on the pre list.

There is still plenty of room.. Try to swing by tonight if you can, it really helps..

If you can't make it tonight I will be there by 7:00 am in the morning, sign-ups have been well published as closing at 9:00..

The weather is looking specatcular so come on out..

Don't forget this is one of the qualifiers for the state USDGC spot!!!

The players packs have cool stamped disc, including RW-Pro Aviar's and Roc's, those things smell great!!!

Perfect weather, a nice new course and all of our friends out playing Disc Golf, this weekend should be special..

Mountain Glide Sunday, non-sanctioned 36 hole fun on Furdog's mountain..

See you soon..

one day events don't allow much real estate to make up for a bad round.

I really appreciate all of your kind words. There were a few moments of stress but those are to be expected when you have 97 people. I think we signed up 60 in about 40 minutes!!

Ok, here is the deal. I made a mistake in the MPO and MPM divisions.

Sammy signed up for open initially, plain as day on his sign up sheet. Before the 1st round he asked if he could move to pro masters, I said sure. I changed his scorepointe card and moved him into that division, I never made the change in the computer.

For some reason, most likely a typo, I listed Tony Walker as open instead of pro master. In the spreadsheet MPO is right on top of MPM, any way my bad.

Everything is fine in that they both played pro master all day, and their scores we sorted with the pro masters. The problem is with the payout. The system showed two more pros than there really were, and two less pro masters.

Pro payout was over paid. No big deal I am obviously going to let those payouts stand.

However I need to pay more in the pro master field.

Here is how the fist payout looked:

MASTER PRO DIVISION

1 $104 $105
2 $71 $70
3 $49 $50
4 $36 $35
5 $29 $30

Here is how it should have looked:

MASTER PRO DIVISION

1 $115 $115
2 $80 $80
3 $54 $55
4 $42 $40
5 $33 $35
6 $24 $25

So I owe the following:

Clint McClellan $10.00
Sam Nielsen $10.00
Chris Hicks $ 5.00
Curtis Harris $ 5.00
Ray Walker $ 5.00
Bill Pennington $25.00

I will get in touch with you all and settle this all out.

I have a system to keep this from happening, yep, didn't use it today..

So, wanted to straighten all of that out. Andrew and I had a great time. Pennekamp was a BIG help

Special thanks to Brad Hoi for coming out this morning and fixing hole #8.

I plan on telling Innova that we are seeing this a lot, actually 2 baskets at red hawk and now this one. The need to do something to make the basket stronger..

Again, thanks to everyone, sorry about my mistake..

See you soon..

I dont know what OKC did to you guys , but I know of several people from the OKC metro that support all the t-town events that they can . I think that Disc Golf gets a bad rap because of the "STONER GOLF " label that has been put on it for so many years.every time I mention to a non discer that there are tourney's they usually say "they have tournaments for that , I thought that was just for stoners".If we really want it to grow , like I know most do, we should support all the areas that try and have good courses and good people to throw events. I think OKC got a black eye from someone that does'nt even play anymore ( BH ) running an event that did nothing for anyone but take their money. There are people in OKC , me being one , that would love to put more effort into this sport but know that people dont respect public property at all and once a course is put in it is basically just that.I can only imagine what someone like DJ feels , when he puts his time in to his course ie: Benches , mulch , tee signs, landscaping only to come out to see what some jack *** has done to it , be it vandelism ,stealing , or just trashing it out. So I know most things on here are meant to be taken lightly but hearing only negative things about OKC all the time is getting old , believe it or not there are a few good supporters down here . There will always be Q'S and Tom's but we also know that they dont represent our respective towns Disc Golfers. With all that said , I hope all the okies that are going to worlds this week kick some major tail and show what kind of golf we can play , I will be following you all from my computer so make me proud. Red , dont make me get back on my high horse , as small as I am it would hurt to fall off.Back to your regular programming.

Mickey, I agree with most everything you had to say. You and several OKC/Norman guys support Tulsa way better that a lot of the Tulsa guys support OKC. Not sure as to why. As for the ribbing OKC gets, well thats what happens when there are only two major cities within a state. It us against you in a competitive way. Its even Tulsa against OKC in economics, politics, standard of living....ect.........you get the picture.

There's nothing wrong with "Stoner Golf". It is what it is. Where would DG be if pot never existed?

If you want DG to be there with the NFL or MLB then drug test at tournaments like they do and see how many players tumble back to the grass roots sport God intented it to be. :)

Instead of trying to hide the fact, embrace it as part of life and be who you want to be.

More than likely half of the strangers you drive next to on the highway are addicted or partake in some type of mood modifier. Why should DG be any different?

[QUOTE=MICKEYBROOKSHIRE;1386590]I just wish people that dont play or have little knowledge of Disc Golf didnt associate it as such 90% of the time .QUOTE]

Well I understand what you’re talking about but I think a lot of the stereotyping goes back to high school or maybe even junior high where right or wrong, as kids in school, most everyone could be labeled as part of one group or another. The sports guys were considered “Jocks”, the academic people were considered “Nerds”, cheerleaders were considered “Sosh”, and guys that smoked were considered “Heads”.

No matter which group you might consider yourself you probably knew people that would or might fall into one of these groups. I was a “Head” back then and disc golf at the park was just a place to hang out and play for those of us that didn’t have any else to do. I’m sure the jocks or nerds that saw me out there back then carried the association throughout their lives and if they were to me now days without knowing me, would consider me to be just the same whether I am or not.

Coming back into DG after so many years I really haven’t found it to be any different so shaking off the stereotype is something I don’t think will ever happen. Disc Golf is better ran and more organized compared to back then which is good but as a TD, I occasionally get people trying to pay their entry with a joint which doesn't work for me.

Personally I believe "Ultimate" has a better shot making ESPN just because those guys have to run and it could be played in a stadium.

I don't have a problem with the "Stoner DG" label because it reminds me of a much more simple time when life was easy and people weren't crashing planes into buildings.

This is no different then general life in which you can be stereotyped into some type of tribe just by your last name.
