never been there, but obviously it's over 4 hours from here. If I was a top pro in Pittsburgh i would be coming down to Patapsco for some of that 5k added cash. Patapsco is very similar to the courses i've seen up but a bit less elevation changes. And did I mention 5k minimum added cash? This event is going to be off the hook....

Dick

Don't forget to sign up early! All the patapsco teepads should be rebuilt by the event and we should have new signs. Course should be in prime shape and we are hopeful to also have the new permanent long pins in place.

And don't forget the 5k minimum added cash! since the women's USWDGC is the same weekend, i expect that most all of that added cash will end up in open since it will be divided up based on participants in each division.

Good to hear about the teepads, I spent about 3 hours the day before the Punisher digging out holes under the teeboards so all the water would drain off the tees.

OK, worlds are over. Time to register for the Picnic! did we mention we are almost done with ALL NEW TEES? Or that one of our players won the DGA basket raffle and we should have 18 shiny new PERMANENT LONG PINS in place? Did you take a gander at the first post and see that we not only have food, but 5000$ added cash?

Pre-registration only.

See you there.

See http://www.dgcoursereview.com/course.php?id=250, although the pictures are not that helpful because they show you the easy beginning of each hole. There is a course map at this site. There is also a link to a better set of pictures http://terpconnect.umd.edu/~clwatson/Patapsco.html. You'll have to see it to really figure it out though. There are some pictures from tournaments at http://sharkysshots.com/index.php?cat=9.

it's looks very different than Dela, but just as cool. Long rolling hills, trees, some elevation. some really tough holes in long to long(9218feet). We don't call the spring event the "Punisher" for nothing...

Registrations are starting to roll in, last week is always a scramble. Don't get shut out. Most of the east coast big guns haven't signed up, so this could be a chance for some of you young guns to grab a chunk of added cash! Plus this event will be worth it just for the chance to play the new Patapsco and all the added amenities...

Seven of the top 40 pros in the country will be here. If you're on the fence, contact Dick ASAP and get in -- I think there are still a few spots left.

I was out a Patapsco last weekend and was amazed how much better the course is than the last time I saw it. New tees (two on every hole) are awesome, and with two permanent baskets on every hole, this is set up to be one of the premiere courses on the East Coast. Between this and the evolving Iron Hill in DE, you've got two permanent courses each at ~9,500'+ of distance, and with all sorts of amazing shots. Epic.

What was the layout for the first round? Nikko's 45 seems sick!

Nobody should be able to shoot that here, even in the long to a/b config! Apparently he even got a duece on 7 long to b. wow.Not sure of the course record, but that must be pretty close.

New tees look nice, but why aren't they level with the ground? Looks like some big dropoffs at the end of the pads?

Dick
Sep 20 2009, 11:15 AM
pads are raised to prevent erosion, but they are oversized 12x6.possibly some landscaping will be done later. There is plenty of room on the pads to throw though. and they are 100 times better than they were. I don't think you can tell much from pictures, you should have come out. First place is 1100$ and 26 pros are getting paid.

Sandal, most of the pads that require longer run ups are actually 16 feet long! most people seemed to really like them. do they have disadvantages? yes. but i think all types someone isn't going to like. overall the course is looking awesome. We look forward to seeing you out there next year!

OK, everyone...What did do we need to improve to make this event bigger and better? What did we do right that you liked? Our goal is to be the one of the top tournaments in the east. We want to right up there with the Vibram and VO. We want all the top players making plans to be at Patapsco every year. Hope everyone had fun this year, and we will be working on a bigger better event for next year....

Payouts were nice, CTP pirzes were some of the best i've ever seen. the course looked great with the new tee pads. i do agree with sharky it would have been nice to remove the short baskets. some of them are in the way of some shots to the longs.

Great turnout. Thanks to Rich and the Nomads for sponsoring me! I wish I had played better on this righty course.

The Patapsco course was gorgeous and so much fun to play! The teepads were great, payout was good, and the food was excellent. [The perfect weather and the lightning-fast speed at which the rounds were up on the PDGA were an added bonus. :) ] Thanks to EVERYONE who sponsored and helped run the event; it was top-notch and I definitely hope to play again next year.

I agree on the short pin comments, but it's not a huge deal.

Sharky didn't even play the event, so i don't know how he has such a big opinion on removing the short pins. maybe a couple are a bit in the way, but i really didn't hear any other comments on that. i know Jim plans on moving a few of the so they are less in the way.

Shark did take some good pics though. Thanks!

Sharky
Sep 23 2009, 03:01 PM
Yeah way to receive constructive criticism. :) I did play during the lunch hour and my opinion was shared by multiple players who did mention it in their posts did you not "hear" them either? Again, kudos for a most successfull tournament just admit when you made a mistake. :)

mdstiles
Sep 25 2009, 07:44 AM
Excellent! Since I know Sharky always tries to be constructive, he is clearly volunteering to move the baskets for the next tournament.

For a few of us, the gray baskets provided significant entertainment value. On our starting hole (14) I had a lousy drive and then a great second drive from the fairway. It was hyzering in nicely toward the green basket when it smacked the chains on the gray basket. Lefty made a few comments about how that would turn me into a Sharky-like whiner. The look on Lefty's face when he then managed to hit the pole of the gray pin with his flick roller was priceless.

Dick
Sep 25 2009, 10:25 AM
Obviously they could have been moved, but they weren't. Plans are to move the positions that are in the way of the long positions by next year. Unless of course Sharky is volunteering to move them during the event. If there is an alternate basket on a hole i would suggest just not hitting it in the meantime.

Sharky
Sep 25 2009, 04:05 PM
Sure blame it on me I can take it. For the life of me I don't see what the big deal is. You made a mistake, acknowledge it and move on you don't have to deflect anything. And btw move all the baskets not just the ones you think are in the way. I can see it now why did you throw over there?

Dick
Oct 01 2009, 10:14 AM
The point of having alternate pins is so you don't have to move the short pins to play the long ones. Some short pins are in the way obviously since the course wasn't originally designed for dual placements, but we have plans to fix that. Hopefully in the future we will have volunteers to remove the short pins if possible when they aren't used, but i assure you it is alot of work. and where exactly will we store 18 baskets not in use? I'll do my best to look into what we can do, but my point is that it is much easier to criticize than to actually do something about it.

cgkdisc
Oct 01 2009, 10:47 AM
Seems like there would be little reason to move short baskets. There are several top courses with dual baskets and the short basket is simply a "metal bush" hazard to avoid when playing the long pin, little different from an electrical box or permanent trash can.

Jeff_LaG

Seems like there would be little reason to move short baskets. There are several top courses with dual baskets and the short basket is simply a "metal bush" hazard to avoid when playing the long pin, little different from an electrical box or permanent trash can.

Warwick is one of those courses but with few exceptions, the course was designed so that the short baskets would NOT be in the way to the long pin. Old hole #4, #15, #17, #18 are the only ones that I know of where there have been accidental "gray" aces, deuces or metal hits on the short basket when someone was attempting to play to the long pin:

In the first PDGA tournament at Warwick after dual baskets were permanently installed, I hit a gray deuce on hole#15's short basket while going for the long. In that same tourny, Brinster threw a backhand roller from the short tee on hole#18 that was headed out to the long pin but rolled up the hill and right into the short basket for a gray ace!

In a Doubles tournament many years ago, Scott Wolfe and I *both* hit the side of the short basket on old hole#4 on our drives while attempting to play to the long pin.

Perhaps the funniest example was Dan Doyle who was playing the 750-ft. Blue to Blue hole#17. He threw his drive, then accidentally gray deuced the short pin. Standing behind the basket, he then put his approach shot of about 125 feet into the long pin. On a 750-ft. hole, his disc only touched the ground once!

I haven't seen the new layout with dual basket positions at Patapsco but I'm willing to bet it's not as bad an issue as it is being portrayed. And I would agree with Rich that removing pins during a tournament is a big volunteer drain, and really unnecessary in the grand scheme of things.

patpitts
Oct 01 2009, 02:20 PM
Its only 4 to 5 holes that they come into play.

Dick
Oct 02 2009, 04:06 PM
holy crap, Jeff agreed with me? better review my position!

seriously, it is a minor issue on a few holes, but they are working on moving those pins where it can come into play. other than that, it's like Chuck said, metal bushes. Not really a huge obstacle in the grand scheme of things.

Dick
Oct 02 2009, 04:08 PM
bottom line is that sharky is trying to offer constructive criticism, and we appreciate the input and are looking at ways to work around having to move the baskets. that makes for alot of work on game days.

First off, you guys put on a heck of an event- thanks for that!

Did anyone pick up a brown Dynamic Disc hoodie off the tee sign of hole 3?
(I realize this is a little late)

I had to throw an upshot on hole 8 with the basket right in front of me. I was aiming for the short basket off the tee and actually landed just to the right of it. Didn't really bother me, just made for a much more difficult upshot.

I know Jim was talking about moving a few of the short baskets so they wouldn't quite be in the middle of the fairway for those playing the to those sexy green baskets.

Dick
Oct 07 2009, 10:43 AM
Yes, we found the hoodie. I'll PM you the email of the guy who has it.

Is there a reason the results aren't official yet?

They are a little late sending in the results. I'm going to check to make sure they have been sent in.

Thank you Rich.

Awesome event! I hope to be back next year.

I don't think it is a big deal that the short pins were left in place for the long pin rounds. They are insignificant compared to all the other natural obstacles. Having moved a lot of baskets myself, I know that the amount of work required to do that is not insignificant. Perhaps a compromise would be to remove the tall poles off the top for the basket not in play? That would make the stipulated course more clear as well.

Anyway, one of my favorite tourneys for sure. Beautiful venue, well organized.
