The course has been painted.
We will add flags to the basket locations tomorrow to make them stand out more.
You can go and get a feel for the course or throw the fairways.
The course map link has problems in the initial post, try this one.
http://www.lsdga.com/maps/samuellgrand21.html
All planted beds are no play areas, take relief as casual with extended relief on LOP as needed to reach mowed ground. The all roads and paths that border the holes are OB. All fence lines define OB. Water in the ditch on holes 7 & 9 is casual (before and after the pond), water in the pond is not. All water on Hole 10 is OB.
All planted beds, walkways, curbs, and streets on hole 19 are OB.
Porta-potties have been ordered for the event.
Directions to the course: I-30 east of Fair Park, exit on Dolphin Rd.
Take Dolphin Rd. North to left on Samuell Blvd, first right up the hill to the parking lot.
Hole 1 is near the left front corner of the parking as you enter.
Enjoy.

If you can't tell by the maps, the Samuell Grand course looks like it's going to rival some of the best courses in the metroplex in difficulty *and* in beauty. This is going to be part of an already existing Dallas city park. All we have to do to show the City we mean business is show up and help raise money for the Charity! All proceeds are going towards the installation of new courses in the City of Dallas. Let's get on board and make this thing happen!

We played the Lightning Open on a temp course at Samuell-Grand in, I think, 1988, and it was a great course! It is a very pretty park, in an urban location. The Metcalf brothers and Bill Summrall had an object course there well before that time, though, as well as the park property that later became the Dallas Arboretum!

We have done out best to design a fun and challenging course with the land currently available. From what I have heard of the old design, it used land that is now part of the driving range and under tennis courts.
I do not think you will be complaining about the course not being long enough though. It comes in at 7,676' when all 21 holes are used. Holes 19-21 are only available when the park has been reserved.

Gary,
I think you are right. We did use some land that was to the northeast of where you have the course, where we skirted the tennis courts, that is now covered by additional courts.
You/Dirk/design team have added additional holes as well as additional length that was not necessary twenty years ago when a flat top Roc or Hammer were the drivers of choice. Great job, and I am looking forward to playing it on the 20th.

Gary,
I just wanted to clarify - Is the last event the only one that you have scheduled for both days of the weekend? I saw the "Saturday - Adv and Rec; Sunday - Pro and Int" and was concerned that maybe all 4 of the Pro events were on Sunday.
BTW, had any contact w/Steve Wallace lately? I have been to BB Owen only a handful of times since the 2004 Worlds, and I don't recall seeing him since I saw him at Crawford about 3 yrs ago.

Yes, the first three events are one day events. One on Saturday, Two on Sunday.
Flag Pole Flats is the only two day event in the schedule, but is still two one day events cobbled together.

Not to worry, there are only a few big boomer holes, most don't give up a long arm shot at the basket without a lot of risk.

So, Samuell-Grand is marked now, so if I went by after work today, armed with a map, I would have a good chance of finding tees and basket locations? How are they marked?
gnduke
Jun 15 2009, 06:19 PM
Each Tee has orange paint, two orange flags, and a yellow rope.
Each basket has one 4x5 pink flag and one 2x3 red flag.
With a map you should be able to find your way around easily.

Hole 7 is a lot of fun. Even well placed tee shots that are short of the basket lead to scary approach shots with the cypress on the corner guarding the basket. The area by the basket is wonderful with the sound of the water splashing over the spillway. I'll probably bring some pavers so we can walk across the overflow and stay dry.

Just want to say a couple of things I forgot to say at the awards when I got my check. This is a beautiful park for a course with lots of challenging shots. There's no doubt it will be a very nice addition to Metroplex fun. It was especially nice to get to see and play with some old friends in such a pleasant atmosphere. I enjoyed all 151 of my shots. I hope the trees will forgive me for abusing them so consistently. Kudos to Dirk, Gary, Steve, Danny, and anyone else involved with the evolution of this course. Thanks, also, should go to Josh for offering his assets and time to support the event.
This is a gorgeous park and I would hate to see it pulled the first time someone's errant tee shot on #4, 5, 6, or 7 winds up glancing off an oncoming windshield sending some little Hispanic lady careening into oncoming traffic. Danny's ideas to move tees closer to the street and baskets away from the street is the right way to get play to avoid those problems. I know you've already planted the sleeves, but that's not undoable and a little tweaking would be a very good thing. Not saying the layout wasn't nice. On the contrary, I agree it was very memorable. I would just hate to see the city say it's got to go because of a traffic accident. Numbers 4 and 5 were especially encouraging shots to flirt with the mandos.
Once again, thanks for this opportunity. I enjoyed it tremendously.

Thanks for the kind words, skipper :)
I agree - this is a really good course that just needs a bit of tweaking. It's the opinions of players and the flow of tournaments that will help make this course a great one. It's one thing to lay out holes on a map and walking through the park. Once you get 60-100 players on it playing, you can really see where the improvments are needed. That's one of the coolest things about this series to me - we get to proof the courses *before* they are permanently installed! Sam Grand is a *beautiful* park and will make one helluva DG course. Just a few more thousand dollars to raise :) I can't wait to play there again!

Thanks Skip,
The chance of going into the street on those holes has been worried over and the best compromises balance play by both people that care about the mandos and those that don't. We will look at ways to discourage play over the road, but have to be aware of which fairways we are taking space from to do it. Fortunately Sammuell gets less traffic than Grand on the other side of the park. Hole 5 had been planned to tee from beside a live Oak that was about 20' closer to the street, but the tree was lost a few weeks before the tournament. I've never considered going over the street on hole 7. Where do the shots land? Would making the planting beds above the fairway OB help the situation?

It's not a matter of considering going toward the street on purpose on #7 or any other hole. Errant shots and bad kicks off of trees happen. If you don't believe me ask any of the friends I played with yesterday. They'll reassure you that a spaz can make it happen.

I agree it is not ideal, but I have a fairly thin piece of land to go down and back on. I have used as much screening material as I can and will be adjusting 4, 5, and 6 to make them harder to get into the road. But you can not accident proof the roads without moving a few hundred feet away.

If you didn't have a chance to play Samuell-Grand the first time, you are really in for a treat. Although I did play it the first time, I will not be out there next Sunday. Yesterday and today, I attempted to get a round in at the recently reinstalled Jimmy Porter Park course in Carrollton, and I found that I was not up to getting a full 18 holes in. So, it looks like I am done playing until I get to KC. It is just too dad blamed hot for a wimpy, out of shape GM like me, but the S-G course has lots of shade and places to get hydrated, so y'all should do just fine.

I'm not gonna be able to make the second trip around Grand since I'm playing in the Fling at the Vet the next weekend and my budget says "No", but I highly reccommend that if you didn't play it the first time you definately should try to get over there for this one. Well, I am going. Any requests? I'd like to bring you back a tournament stamped disc as a token of my appreciation of your work. The tour moves to White Rock Lake - Stone Tables on the August 2.
We bring $189 in the ace pot from the previous event to a course with 4 holes under 250' and 4 more under 320'. There is also the problem of 7 holes over 420' with the longest at 840'. Several of the holes will be familiar to those that have played the course in the past, but about half are new for this event.
The 21 hole course plays 8195', but has a lot of birdie opportunities with 10 holes under 355', and 10 holes over 370' (the hole in the middle is 357') .
The google map and a printer friendly PDF map are available at http://www.lsdga.com/dncct
BTW, There are plans to mark Hole 9 off in 50' increments starting at 200' from the tee.
I may need to find a sponsor for the longest drive on that hole. It's not the longest hole on the course, but it is about the only long open hole with a clear view of the sky off the tee.

I won't have time for pictures of this course before heading up to KC, but here is a description of the course.
Hole 1 - 305' You have to choose a right or left line. The left line has a 20' ceiling, the right line has a bushy tree trunk about 60' out. The basket is less than 20' from the creek and the right line leaves you putting toward the creek if you are short, skipping into the creek if you are long.
Hole 2 - 405' but hidden from view on the tee by a huge tree trunk you have to go around. The basket is closely guarded by a semicircle of trees if the approach goes long.
Hole 3 - 354' A longer version of the traditional hole to the corner with less hook at the end. A wide fairway with a high ceiling between the trunks of tall trees with the basket tucked between a large tree on the right and thick woods on the left. The hole looks to bend to the left, but has room for the lefty hyaer too.
Hole 4 - 249' The first of the ace runs tees from across the ditch and is well protected long and left. You want to be short and right or long on this hole if you miss the ace.
Hole 5 - 537' The long shot up to the corner is not an option for us this time. Instead we cross the street and tee beneath the canopy of the only large tree in the area. The drive is somewhat restricted leaving an approach that depends on how well you deal with the tree at the tee.
Hole 6 - 320' nice short straight hole over a raised manhole cover, under a large lateral branch about 50' from the target. Get past both and you are looking at a birdie.
Hole 7 - 300' The traditional end of the line hole on this side, It plays from the road across the mowed grass to the woods with only two large tree trunks guarding the basket. The hole had been placed into the woods in the past, but is in the short grass this year. The basket is backed up right against the treeline, so shots that go long may not have a putt back to the basket.
Hole 8 - 370' The infamous false corner. From the fairway, the treeline appears to stop about 20' short of where it really ends. A lot of discs end up in the schule 20' short of the corner.
Hole 9 - 714' This hole will have distance markers to measure your drives. It is the only hole on the course where you can let it all go without too much worry of getting into trouble. Every course needs a driving range hole where you only need to worry about distance, 9 is that hole on this course.
Hole 10 - 240' The second ace run hole, but this time the trouble is at the early part of the hole. The ground rises from the tee box before dropping off to the basket, but the trees add a low ceiling choking off the safe routes to the basket.
Hole 11 - 393' looks like 360 from the tee. You can not see the basket if you are short and left. All utility poles along Buckner are mandatories to the inside of the park.
Hole 12 - 357' uphill with the trees funneling you right to the basket. What could go wrong here?
Hole 13 - 206' the shortest hole on the course, downhill, nothing too close to the basket, just have to get past the two trees that frame the line off the tee.
Hole 14 - 423' A straight drive has no worries, both right and left hand hyzer lines have some trees to stay clear of. The approach is through a maze of old growth tree trunks. There should be an easy line to the basket from up close, but a bad drive takes a lucky shot to get through clean.
Hole 15 - 459' A long slowly fading righty hyzer line. A wide fairway and a clear approach to the basket. This is a big arm hole.
Hole 16 - 348' with all of the trees in the last half of the hole. Just keep telling yourself "there are no trees". All of the Concrete bollards along the street are mandatories to the left.
Hole 17 - 840' yes, 840'. But there is a method to the madness. The first drive is the key to the hole. The drive needs to reach the clear air out of the trees on the left side of the fairway, but also needs to carry over 300' toward the basket for the second shot be close enough to leave an easy approach. The problem is the large tree on the left about 250' from the tee. A long, flat, right to left shot through the trees can get you where you need to be for the second shot, but it is not guaranteed when you are throwing at full strength. All of the Concrete bollards along the street are mandatories to the left.
Hole 18 - 222' walking from 17's basket to 18's tee you have no idea where the basket is going to be, but when you stand on the tee, there is the basket just across the reeds and beyond the short cypress. There is water very short, right, and long. The shot is easier than it looks, but it looks really nice.
Hole 19 - 471' with a big tree just in the wrong spot 2/3s of the way to the basket. Get past the tree and you have a routine hole, hit the tree and things get interesting.
Hole 20 - 380' a narrow fairway with the basket on the right may have a lot of discs getting off the fairway and into the thick schule on the right side, but leaving the fairway to the left may not be much better(though it is mowed). 350' down the middle leaves a long putt for a birdie.
Hole 21 - 300' standing on the tee, half of your view looking toward the basket is water. The water should not come into play here, but it does come into your mind.

WRL - Stone Tables is flagged.
BB Owens won't be used unless we go over 105 players.
Enjoy.

TitleDISC will be rolling into the WRL Stone Tables area at about 7:15 in the morning to get set up and start taking more registrations. We *may* need to move or eliminate hole #14, depending on the amount of water on the course, but most holes aren't badly affected by the rain, if at all. Tournament HQ will be in the stone tables pavilion, just to the right of the entrance to the park (and by holes #14-15). There is quite a bit of parking throughout the course, but I think most people will be able to fit in right near HQ.
This should be a very fun course with ace runs and hard holes alike to challenge many aspects of your game. There is a good amount of shade on the course and you will pass by HQ at least twice during the round to fil up on water if necessary. Weather is looking good, too! C'mon out and help put a new course in the ground in Big D!

Anyone know if this course is still flagged? Any reactions from those who played it?

The Jiggly one hopes to make it out Sunday! If there's less than 100 people will we play FPH twice and leave BB out of the mix? Please say yes. :)

Sign-up closes at 8:30(ish) when the players meeting starts.
The course was mostly underwater most of the day today, about half of the holes have migrated to the hill. As soon as the back 7 holes dry out enough to be played reasonably, the holes on the hill will be moved back. Hopefully they will be playable by Sunday.

The Summer series is over, James Gunn III managed the only Ace in three events to take the $411 pot. Dirk won the Basket in the raffle (which he immediately donated to the Charity). The series and donations have generated just over $4000 toward baskets for the new courses. According to some sources in the parks department, Samuel Grand looks like it could go in before next summer's events.
The results are up, Jack and Ben took merch instead of cash Sunday.
We missed you John.
Thanks to DDG and Team DiscQualified for handling all of the baskets at all four events. It could not have happened without your many many hours of support.
Very Special thanks to Josh and Diedre Dann of Titledisc for handling the payout at all of the events for cost. Titledisc and Dallas Disc Golf made the monetary donations that made running the series possible, without their generous support the series would not have happened.
The largest dollar contributor to the charity has been the PDGA. Under the Charity Endowment Program, they are directly responsible for more than $1300 of the total donations.
Special thanks to all of the players that came out (especially to the last couple of events in the mud) and supported the new efforts to fund new courses during these tough financial times. The volunteers made the events possible, but the players donated the most of the $4000+ we raised toward new course hardware and installation.
