Can't wait for this one, my 4th consecutive Wild Hair! Jerry, I know there were talks of not using last years hotel sponsor, is there any word on if there will be a hotel sponsor this year and where? Just let me know so I can support the hotel that supports the Wild Hair. Otherwise I probably can get a deal through priceline. Thanks

Glad your coming back Calvert! I'm currently working on getting some hotel pricing done, but I'm not going to do a host hotel this year and let people stay where they want. Some just want a roof over their head, others are willing to pay more for better quality. Probably re-visit doing a host hotel next year.

Im going to gather a list of Wyndham group hotels in Abilene since there is a PDGA member discount through that group and the few hotels that are closest to the course and let people choose. If you go through on-line booking, anything on the southwest side of town (Buffalo Gap Rd. area or Southwest Dr. area) is within 10 min of the course...and theres several to choose from there.

Hope to have this info up here and on the abilene DG site this week.

One thing I want to point out...

Please note that Fri doubles will be at the new ACU Wildcat course and NOT at Cal Young. It was designed by Jay Reading and is a super good 9-holer. Each team will play the course twice.

Something I cant stress enough though...there is absolutly NO tobacco, alchohol, or illegal drugs allowed on the course EVER. ACU has been gracious enough to open up their course to the public, and we want to keep it that way. So please respect their rules. I'll have a map put together soon so everyone knows how to get there.

Less than 3 weeks and counting!!

Shirts are ordered! Stamped discs are ordered! Trophies are ordered! Lunch menu is being prepared! Everything is in order...(so far :))

Players pack is set... Everyone gets a full color T-shirt, a reusable scorecard (your thinking "what?"...wait and see :)) and lunch tickets for both days. Innova mini and sticker will be included until they run out...should have at least 50 of each...probably more.

Also, the ACU campus Store is donating 3 sharks and 3 leopards, all white with the ACU stamp on them. They will also be set up at the ACU course for Fri dubs and they will be at Cal Young on Sat.

I plan to get a hotel list for you guys up by tommorrow...stay tuned

Got some hotel information gathered up finally,
The hotel rates below were given as part of the feeler sent out by the Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau. You might could get better deals going through an on-line travel service (Travelocity, Priceline, Expedia, etc) so thats probably worth checking out. The closest/best quality hotel is going to be the Whitten Inn. Next year, Im looking at the Whitten Inn as a possible host hotel so let me know if your staying there. Besides the Whitten and Howard Johnson, all the others except one are located on the south west side of town, which is about 10 min from the course. Howard Johnson is 15 min from the course. There are several other hotels on the southwest side of town, and any of them are about 10 min from the course. Comfort Suites is located just off I-20, and there are several other hotels in that areabut they are a little farther from the course (15-20 min). Anyway, hope this helps J

First players list is up....13 officially registered. If you know your coming, please sign up early. Its a great help to the staff and helps us plan the event better.

I expect entires to start picking up next week...dont get left out!

Fundraiser event went well....29 players! We raised enough money to cover the sanctioning fee, insurance, and buy us a case of spray paint! Thanks to everyone that came out on a VERY hot day....if the clouds hadn't rolled in for the 3rd round, we probably would have had more people not finish.

Got 4 more entries in for an official total of 17. I've had numerous phone calls and e-mails for information and other commitments, so that total will start rising quickly. Unless theres an influx on entries from unknown areas, I dont expect we'll fill...but dont take any chances. In fact, the more people that sign up early, the better chance that others will want to play because of the number of pre-registered entries. For those that tried to sign up on Titledisc this weekend, Josh had the registration functionality disabled for a time to fix some issues. I checked it last night and that functionality has been restored. Titledisc is the easiest, fastest, and most dependable way to get pre-registered....well worth the extra fees for peace of mind IMO.

Everyone gets a good players pack, free lunch both days, plenty of water, a raffle for 2 baskets, 100+% of your entry fee into the prize payout, ring of fire....why would you NOT want to play???

The web hosting company that I use for abilenediscgolf.net had some issues last night. One of their data centers had some some power outages which caused some of the sites they host to not work properly. So some of the pages/forms wouldn't display correctly or come up at all. As of late last night, abilenediscgolf.net was back up and running. If you were on the site last night looking up info and you had some problems, you should now be able to navigate around the site just fine.

If you cant or you have any other issues pulling forms off, e-mail me at dg23837@suddenlink.net and I will send you what you need directly.

That's what I'm stressing Jerry, why not play? That is awesome you are giving the open division players pack. It's very rare you will see a TD do this. I will sign up tomorrow and book my room online, we should have 3-4 coming from Wichita Falls. The Abilene Dgolfers have always been real hospitable and the Wild Hair has always most importantly been fun! See ya Next friday for dubs

Heres a little directional help to get to the courses. Most of you know where Cal Young is, but ACU is not quite as strait forward. This pics should help. The street that leads to the ACU parking lot is Cedar Crest.

I havent had a chance to update the PDGA list...I'll get it done this weekend. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that we have 26 officially signed up, so theres still plenty of room.

Click on the top link in my sig to get to a form to print or click the bottom link to go strait to Titledisc and sign up online. Titledisc entry will probably close on Wed., so if you going that route..sign up soon. Just a week away now!!

Less than one week away now!! Remember that if you plan to use Titledisc to sign up, you have until WEDNESDAY!! If you plan on mailing an entry, you better get it in the mail no later than TOMMORROW to make sure I get it. Really, if your going to mail it, it would probably be best to hang onto it and turn it in when you get here to make SURE that I get it. If you plan to do that and your not coming in 'till Saturday, please call me so I can keep your name on a list and make sure you get a spot. I'll update the list later tonight, but we're still less than half full...so there should be plenty of room.

Most of the information has been covered up above, bu if you have any questions on directions, schedules, etc...please call me.

I see Darren Lawless is registered. I've got a disc of his from the creek or Bomb Squad area that I'll send to the tourney. My pick-up truck just got rear-ended this morning on my way to Canadian, TX so it doesn't look like we'll get to make it this weekend. Sorry, Jerry.

ahh man.....that stinks :/ Dont know if your planning to go to worlds, but we will be there. Also, definitly plan on being at Top of Texas..and helping out with scoring, etc. if you need.

For those coming in on Friday, we will be taking sign-ups all day. So even if you cant make it for doubles..stop by before you get to your hotel and sign-up/check-in, pick up players packs, etc. Someone will be there until sundown.

And speaking of the sun, it will be out in full force. Expect temps in the high 90's all weekend. There will be lots of bottled water and water coolers on the course...but bring plenty. Dont get dehydrated!!

Got SEVERAL entries in today.....44 officially signed up now. So, half way there pretty quickly. I still dont "expect" a full 90, but at this rate...who knows......

Basically...if you want to come...SIGN IN TODAY!!!! Titledisc will close sometime Wed....prob in the afternoon/evening. dont take any chances...sign up today. or, if you KNOW you are coming but cant/wont use titledisc...CALL ME!! I want to be sure and get you in if you know you are coming.

We will have an added bonus in the players pack. Stevens Rubber Stamps and Signs are throwing in full color static stick-ons! They look sharp, and are not permanent...so you can remove them whenever you like. Also, I got the T-shirts this weekend and they look SWEET!! Full color...just like my avitar....but not fuzzy. Very crisp and vibrant! Re-usable scorecards are on the way and likely an Innova mini and sticker for everyone as well. Thats a players pack valued at about $18. Throw in meals provided both days....and your getting close to $30 worth of free stuff JUST FOR SIGNING UP. Definite added cash....1st place in Open will be paid more than last year. Throw in some more CTP prizes, $300+ worth in the Ring of Fire, a raffle for a DISCatcher Sprot and DISCatcher travler basket, and a giant size, full color 09 Wild Hair logo signed by Patrick Taylor (graphic artist) and every player at this years tournament.....

Oiy.....why is it not full already??

Oh, and theres a disc golf tournament too :D

Going to really miss the Wild Hair this year Jerry...I need you to do something for me, I need you to give a "one figure salute" to Alan for me as soon as you see him on Saturday morning, then tell him Jason said hello and happy B-day!!!

If you are not already doing something this weekend head to Abilene for the Wild Hair, it's always a blast to play at!

Jroc

Got a handful more entries, plus several phone calls from folks i turst will be here, so the official total is 52...with about 7 unofficial, but probable. I'll have an updated list on the PDGA site tonight. So theres roughly 30 spots left. If you know your gonna make it, give me a call so I can make you an unoffical spot. I'll hold those spots until around 8:30a on Sat. unless I've heard from you first.

Course is looking good!! The city will finish up mowing today, most of the circles are painted and all the OB lines will be painted today.

Weather calls for 100 Fri, 100 Sat, and 95 on Sun......be prepared!!!

Jroc
Jun 25 2009, 12:35 PM
Make that 53 full paid with 8 unofficial/probable.....great pre reg numbers this year. I can think of probably 20 off the top of my head that will be signing up by Fri night....so there is likely less than 10 spots left after that. We've never had a Wild Hair fill, but the early numbers give us a good chance. Once we reach 90 players, I have no choice but to turn people away....dont be that person!! Call me today!

Jroc
Jun 26 2009, 02:21 AM
Oh boy.....LOTS of activity in the last few days. The official total is 56 fully paid entries. But, the unofficial/probable list stands at 21.....so, if everyone shows up that has called me and said they will show up (which for the most part is likely)..we will have 77 signed up by this time tommorrow. Almost all on the unofficial list have told me they will be signing up tommorrow...for those that do not, I will hold their spots until around 8:30a Sat morning. After that, those spots will be given to those waiting that morning.

In short, I think this one is going to fill. I CAN NOT take more than 90 players. I WILL NOT make extra holes. If you or someone you know is thinking about coming and hasn't signed up or talked to me....tell them to CALL ME TOMMORROW!. This event is going to be GREAT, and I will HATE to turn people away....but I have no choice. If you want in....show up at the ACU course starting at 2:30p until sundown or call me (325-829-6579).

All those who are travelling, have a safe trip. Remember....its going to be HOT< HOT< HOT....please come prepared. We'll have water at ACU and Cal Young all weekend, but bring plenty for yourself.

Good luck to everyone this weekend up in Abilene....especially the Warlocks and other fellow CVDGAer's. Hope everyone has a blast this weekend, being that I have been the the previous 5 Wild Hairs....I know you will!

Wow...what can I say. We maxed it out at 90...and had to turn people away!! But everyone got to play in 103 temps today!! MAN was it hot.... Tommorrow supposed to be 95...so maybe a bit of a break. Scores for today are up.

Fri dubs was a rare treat. 35 teams competed in one division which ended up paying out 10 places (1st, 2nd, 2 tied for 3rd, and 6 tied for 4th) and everyone enjoyed the ACU course. More tommorrow

The 2009 Abilene Wild Hair is in the books. This was the first event in Abilene disc golf history that was filled. Lots of the same folks from outside our area came again and brought friends...note to all the local players that showed up expecting to sign in...SIGN IN EARLY next year!! This year seemed to be even more well recieved that in years past so you can expect that many people and more next year. Obvisously, we cant take more than 90 if we only use 1 course...but theres already talk about using the other courses in town for next year. Many things have to happen before we could do that....but we will see...

Temp Sat was 103, Sun was 95. Then, on hole 6 of the final 9, the rain started....and it was pouring after a short time. I dont think anyone minded being soaked after spending the last 2 days in an oven. When we finished hole 6...the rain stopped, but definitly cooled things off.

I have to thank my wife Misti for the fantastic job she did running the show. I could not have played without such an able and willing staffer...she made this event hum thats for sure. Thanks to all the first time players in the Wild Hair...I hope we didnt disappoint. Probably the biggest thanks I have were to members of the local disc golf club. We had SOO much help getting everything prepared before hand and that continued throughout the weekend. If it hadnt been for Tom's diligance with all the water coolers, we would have had many more heat related problems with the players. If it hadnt been for Joel and Lee moving all the baskets both rounds, thats one more thing we would have had to worry about. Several helped behind the table with score counting, card arraging, disc sales, etc....it was definitly a team effort and gave me a lot of hope for the club we want to more formally re-establish this year.

Thanks again to everyone that showed up...see ya next year!

As you already know, I've always loved getting to play Will Hair at the Wild Hair...so I'm glad to hear you may open that back up for next year. Now I just gotta hope it doesn't fall on the same weekend as the boat races next year.

Jerry, Misti and all others,

GREAT JOB, I was very impressed at the speed and funcionality of the tourney. Thanks for having ALL of the water available to the players, that was very much appreciated.

It is always great to come to Abilene and play with quality personnalities that only West Texas can supply.

Congratulations on MAX'n out. I guess it is time to open up another course and raise the bar to a 'B-tier'. What a great start you have had, this can only get better.

See you next year...
