The best bet on another room would be Van Buren, as it would just be about 15 min from the course. A person could even do Fort Smith, which is not in a dry county and is on the way back to Tulsa. It would be about a 20-30 minute drive depending on where the hotel is in town.

If you are a B&B type, or are traveling with significant others, there is a bed and breakfast in Chester, 15 min North of Alma, that I am told serves a wonderful breakfast, and is Disc Golfer friendly.

I also want to ask everyone to go by A to Z sporting goods, our biggest sponsor and local disc golf dealer, between rounds on Saturday. There is a nice cafe across the road in the other part of A to Z.

Good luck to all in the tourney!

The Meadors in Alma is a quality place to flop IMO. Last time I stayed there it was less than $40 and the resturant there has good home cooking type of food.

Best of all.....it's a 2-3 minute drive to the course. I don't know if the water park across the street is open but with this 100+ heat it sure would be tempting.

All you Okies go and bring home that Arkie cash and get back home safely.

Dang! That smugmug website that Bobby uses is cool. You can choose a pic and get a print (in all sizes and finishes), and/or you can put the pic on a t-shirt, sweatshirt, apron, button, stickers, mouse pad, mug, coaster, refrig magnet, poster, ceramic tile, mahogany desk organizer, box, pic puzzle, luggage tag, key tag, tote bag, playing cards...wow...oh, and you can buy download rights for either $1 or $3...depending on the quality you want...nice pic website Bobby...

Didn't realize I should pay for other people to make money off my image...

Not that I am opposed to paying Bobby...but shouldn't I have been asked before my image is put up for sale?

Am I wrong?

If I walk up and start taking commemorative photos, for cash, by some old man's collector car, is the old man not entitled to a slice?

Hindsight

Don't make it more than it is Andrew, Bobby was out there sweating his arse off like all of us. At least we can show support for him by getting the pics paid for if you want one. Im sure if you dont want your pic published you can sign a waiver. I am glad he got some cool pics of me and I do plan on buying 2 or 3.

Same goes for garys pics. He has been giving us free pics for a while and now we need to support them the same way they do us.

And "support them the same way they do us"?

Since when is Gary paying me directly for anything? Or Bobby? I appreciate what they do and all but I'm just saying. If they want to go out and take pictures for money they are in the wrong sport.

I'm sure they could take a lousy photo at Wimbledon and make as much as they would in a year off "disc golf action shots".

Consider CDSB a form of papparazzi... except he is following even bigger losers around than the real Papz do. I like Gary's approach to taking and sharing pictures over the last 4 years I have known him, he has done a GREAT SERVICE to the club. It will be funny when there are more photog's trying to take pics to sell for a buck than players to take pics of. Congrats to CDSB who FINALLY joined the good ol' PDGA...

Birdie,

I am not sure what I did to offend you but I feel I should reply to your post to maybe help clear things up just in case others wondered about the photos I take.

This is my understanding of the "taking my photo" law.

First, the law is somewhat fuzzy on whether I can take photos of you guys because it really depends on the person in the photo. You see, you are playing on a public park so I have the right to take photos unless you approach me and say, "Don't take my photo". Now, let's say you never say anything to me about taking your photo and I write up some editorial in a newspaper or a magazine and I use a photo of you and I am simply reporting on the tournament then I am in the clear, I have not used your image in any way to endorse anything.

But let say I sold your photo to Innova and they used it to advertise a new disc. Well, then I am in the wrong for not getting you to sign a release.

Now as far as "not asking you if I could take your photo and put it up for sale". You have every right to ask me to take down your photo and this is clearly stated just about everywhere I post photos. I make it known on my site that if you do not want your photo online to email me and I will take it down.

To also protect the copyright of the images you will also notice that when you purchase a photo that your are also agreeing that the photo is being sold with a Personal Use License and not a Commercial Use License. This means you agree that you will use your image for personal use only.

Yes, the photography and video are a hobby that I hope someday turns into something that could become a career but not just in Disc Golf. Disc Golf is not the only media production I do. Bridie, imagine if you got paid for playing disc golf. You would be getting paid to do a hobby you love. I'm sure you have heard the old saying, "Find a job you love and you'll never work another day in your life."

I was introduced to disc golf about 5 months ago and enjoy the sport very much. After making some connections with people in disc golf I saw the opportunity to put together two things I enjoy, disc golf and media production.

And as far as your example with the collector car. If the photo was used as in an editorial sense like in a newspaper or magazine then no, the old man is not entitled to some cash.

If however it is a classic corvette and chevy wants to use the photo in a commercial or a magazine ad then yes, the old man could ask for a piece of the profit made from the sale to chevy.

Bobby, I am in no way offended...

I was just making a point that I think the photos should be free to those in the photos.

If you disagree, as I see you do, cool. I, somewhat like Joe said, APPRECIATE what you do but I prefer being able to at least get some free copies of the pics taken of me.

If I was out taking pics and got a good one of you I would send it to you without thinking twice.

Not trying to say anything bad about what you do, I totally dig it. I was just presenting an argument.

First off this is obviously not about the money. So I don't know if that was a stab at a college student's finances or what....

And a "pansy"? Ohhh, now I see why I should pay for those photos Paul. All I needed was my masculinity to be challenged... Ha! Thanks!

Hinds deserves criticism in my mind for the way he acted. In no way was he taking the high road or trying to let it go....I believe he instead actually threatened to trash the guys car.

Isn't this a guy who ran for Admin?

And I think he can take care of himself without your help Paul.

Disc golf get's exposure just like other sports...it is made into a video game and kids are programmed to like it.

Any if your final point was really......what else do you need $12 for?....

......then I am done typing.

the only time i have charged for pics was during am worlds. wasn't originally the plan, but kevin put the idea in my head. did i get rich... no, never expected to. but i did make enough to cover my expenses for processing and the merch i bought.
over the years i have been given plastic and such, which i consider a bonus.
if bobby wants to charge for pics, thats cool. he realizes he won't get rich, but he is just trying to help pay expenses. and he has brought something new to the club thru the videos he produces.
if this sport is ever to grow, golfers have to support sponsors and not be expecting everybody to give them something.
i have been asked why i don't play, i guess i enjoy the photo side more, when i get tired of that i will pick up the plastic again.

one thing i have always wanted is to see one of my pics on the cover of the magazine.(which i have lobbied for) at the GCO this year, i was able to get a few that i thought would be cover material and IMHO i thought some were better than the one on the current edition. who knows, it could still happen.

"if this sport is ever to grow, golfers have to support sponsors and not be expecting everybody to give them something."

No I don't expect Innova to send me a free box of discs, but if they released a new disc called the "Treat", I would call West Coast and tell them my name and I guarantee they would send me one.

I don't EXPECT anything.

I only asked for an email, and since then I have only presented arguments and addressed other people's comments.

But maybe you guys are right...maybe we should charge for everything. I would like to see the look on Snake Skinn's face when I say, "Here is your card, if you want a pencil with it that will be extra."

Your arguments are so rediculous. You were wrong about the old man and his car, you attack hinds for telling you to sack up and buy a couple photos, you don't understand that bobby is providing a service by taking pictures, you aren't providing any service by playing disc golf (direct service), and your pencil analogy... come on. I'm pretty sure when am's win mini tournaments and you pay out in plastic, you are getting free disc sales, am I wrong? You can pay for a pencil that innova probably gives you for free anyways.

Many people provide services and are paid for them. I think the problem is you see it as him enjoying is hobby, which HE IS enjoying his hobby, and lucky for him and like he mentioned, he found something he enjoys and can make money at it. Will he get rich off pictures... no, but hopefully he can make enough to pay for the equipment and expenses and keep travelling to tournaments and taking pictures.

Initially, my response was playful, yet serious at the same time, "hey why don't you just buy the photos..." then you opened your mouth and talked, which of course led to stupid things being said. You actually think you have a right to any photo you are in, gimme a break. I'm surprised you aren't asking him to pay you royalties for all the people buying your images off his site.

Also, if anyone ever made a Treat disc it would probably be Whamo, not Innova man, Innova is da best!!

Where is the link to these pictures you want anyways? Let me see if they are worth buying... :) probably not half as good as the pic in my avatar <<<<<< sexi

Now that is RIDICULOUS.

"then you opened your mouth and talked, which of course led to stupid things being said."

And that is where you lost any semblance of respect from me. Resorting to a personal attack?

That is just weak argumentative style.

And in fact that statement could be viewed as a slanderous personal attack...which is against the rules, as I am sure you know.

People charging for action pics has gone on longer than disc itself. We have been around the soccer world for a while now. There are photogs at every tournament. All they do all day long is take action shots of most all players and every game and you are welcome to any copy you want but not for free. Thats why their out there to maybe land a few shots that will put a little $$ back their way. I'm kind of with Dorries on this one. If were to see a pic of me or even you that I'd like to have, I'm more than willing to pay for it and consider it a convenience for the price.

Its just unfortunate that I am rarely happy with any action shot of me. Never pretty to see a fat old man straining every thing they have to throw a piece of plastic.:o

Sorry Andrew, I know you were just questioning the legalities of it. But if you want free pics, have mom come out with the Kodak and follow you around.

There is respect on the line here? Didn't realize that... personal attack? Am I not allowed to poke fun at u on some INTERNET FORUMS... cmon.

How is it rediculous? Yeah he is enjoying his hobby, but that is ALL you see, which is what I'm calling rediculous... you don't see the need for us as disc golf players to support his hobby so he can continue to take the pictures? I personally like the fact that when I play an event and Bobby is there, there are some sweet photos after its all over.

Can we play on the same card again soon? I think I need to throw some more good shots so you can call them "fortuitous" again :)

or maybe you are trying to act all hurt so I can give you some of my sweet echo-gems... no way guy!

It's not "rediculous" it's ridiculous.

I have no more problem with Bobby taking pics than I do with Gary or anyone else. I just wanted clarification on what was going on, which I got.

And if I called your shot fortuitous is probably was.

Well of course I will be, but I want to play an entire round with you not see you in passing when we cross paths half way through the round :)

Maybe we could just battle at the mini tonight, that is if you decided to play. But then again, maybe you shouldn't play and spend that 12 bucks on the precious photos you want.

sidenote: if anyone is going to be in KC this weekend let me know... prolly gonna play some worlds courses friday and saturday... planning on making another trip with more people next weekend too... its all up in the air

I for one dont see any problem with Bobby trying to sell these action photos.if you dont want them dont buy them .Both my nephews 6/7 play many sports and tournaments almost every tournament there is a photographer there taking action shots "for sale online"they give there information and you can chose to buy or not. What about the oklahoma sooner state games photographer his site is pay per print and you let him block the whole end of your teepad to take like 45 pictures in 5 seconds.I for one enjoy looking through Bobbys slideshow of each event and checking to see how hard everyone is trying when throwing.Dorries tries so hard parts of his face slip into another dimension..that one pic that i viewed for free would normaly cost you 10$ to get into the fair then another 5$ for the sideshow .And plus Bobby is a cool dude that i enjoy talking to hanging with.i never would have ahd a chance to meet him if he didnt enjoy the photography..Keep up the good work Bobby ...make sure my color commentary of Jeremys alma play makes his next road to worlds video...:)

Bobby didn't get in the way like that guy did, not at all. Yeah I remember that guy being right at the end of the tee box while I'm throwing and I hear...click...click...click...click...click...cli ck...click...

its like a rollercoaster ride at a major theme park. They are going to take the pic whether you like it or not. It's your choice to pay for it and keep it or just let it fade into oblivion. Thats the best comparison i could think of on my short 5 min. break here.

Opie, think of it in terms of baseball cards. Fame and rariety is what makes them valuable.

Who would want to buy a pic of red-haired Poindexter from "Revenge of the Nerds" when they can purchase rare photos of Jerry Garcia?

Bobby knows that and the only reason he offers to sell yours is to help you with your nerdy low self-asteem. Nobody else is lining up to purchase your photo except maybe your mom.

And what is with the college kid excuse? The plastic you win isn't enough to send you to "Band Camp"? Eight years of college is enough. It's time you take your destined place behind the counter at Micky-D's and start doing your part for society. :)

Dorries tries so hard parts of his face slip into another dimension..

this is very true... you know the best part about it, in that other dimension, the pictures are free. So... every now and then, when I try hard enough, I throw so hard that my face goes into the next dimension and then I just download the picture there for free. Its pretty sweet, maybe Treat should try that if he wants free pictures.

if a course or event is worth it then no walk is too long, just the first part of your warm up routine.

I thought I heard that Centenial was a 3 block walk from parking to 1st tee, so if it is worth it they will come, and walk!

sschumacher
Jun 30 2009, 06:19 PM
It is a three block walk Martin. :(

So far in fact that Wise is the only one that gets to drive his Crap-alanche over to the shelter. The rest of us have to walk and deal with little six and seven year old young thugs at the playground that want money to protect our vehicles from vandalizm. If you don't pay then guess what????

Probably another Twoputt idea of making more money for his park. :(

Its 2 blocks, maybe. Come tournament time, everyone will be able to park on that side by the shelter. EXCEPT you Dog, you'll have to park on hole 11.

My best money making idea is having all those snakes together behind hole 3 basket. Now I don't have to search for free plastic. Most guys will just say screw it and walk off. I just feed my little pets and they let me have the plastic.

hey all, wanted to seriously thank all who came out and supported this year

110 degree heat index, anyone just to be there and finish is an athlete in my book, anyone who thinks this is a hippy sport can kiss my ***

I pull this event for the tourney players, imo, the course is unique and not very suitable for beginning and casual players, I thought that I was gonna be amazed by WAFDA's ability in having all the added cash and merch, over the top players packs and handing $500 to 1st in Open, not to mention having the course in good shape.

well I was wrong, the players generosity is what left me saying WOW!!

We raised over $800 for the EDGE program, kids learning the sport early....that's the Future of the sport (and it's awesome seeing someone make more than the PDGA off of an event like this)

it would not of happened without the quality of the items in the raffle and the players recognizing and buying in

many thanks to all who contributed so strong to the raffle items, KelDog, WAFDA, Twisted Flyer, The Treats, The Baileys, FurDog, Duff, Sam Dodd, Discs Unlimited, Dave Wise.... I hope I didn't forget anyone

and then..... thanks to the PLAYERS who gave there money for such a noble cause

thanks to Daryl Johnson, such a class act, he wins the 1991-2004 set of National (moving into World) Doubles stamped discs and turns around and gives it to me (you'll get a chance at it with the Hell on the Border EDGE Raffle)

many people donated to the CTPs (18 packages) and I thank them also

the course getting whipped into shape took alot of volunteers also, Roger Knight, Shea Hammond, Willie Williams, Wade Parker anyone else I'm not thinking about- ya'll rock

then the awesome tourney staff that helped me so much, I couldn't of done it without them, Dave Hudson, Kelly Ganzel, Chris Eads, Shawn LeMastus even stopped by during lunch with more ctp items and checked and sorted scores then helped make cards out - and Willie Williams and Roger Knight on water and tent set-up - Thank You!!

then the sponsors, to payout: over $1000 cash added and over $500 merch added

WAFDA, A to Z Sporting Goods, Earthworks Landscaping, Big Smith Roofing, Northwest Ark. Disc Golf Assoc., MidWest Sporting Goods, Disc Golf Monkey, Allens Canning, Trophies Unlimited, Precision Graphix and Innova - wouldn't of been as sweet without them!!

Next WAFDA event: 14th Hell on the Border, Aug 22 & 23 - Ben Geren Park, Fort Smith, Arkansas (I wonder how them "dry-fits" are gonna look in red?)

Often times going into and even during an event I wonder why in the heck I'm doing it, now I remember.....Thanks Everyone :)

No EVAN- Thank you. I broke my streak of placing in Ark at 5 but now that im in the a/c I can sit back and reflect on what a good tuckered time I had. WAFDA is definetly a class act !!! Looking forward to HOTB #14.

If half the energy of this rant were applied to moving the pad at Dovillio or picking up trash around the local parks we would be in tip top shape! Nice thread drift on Evan's thread though! As for CDSB & Gary their shots both ROCK, it is mostly due to their efforts people understand the look and passion of Oklahoma disc golf. During the NT both of those guys kept the world up to the minute with the pics and video the presented. Which kept future travelers interested in us as well as a few sponsors VERY HAPPY. A win win for US in Oklahoma.

I personally had to use the "no pics of me disclamer" at Chandlerstock year before last on some tweek in a van that was video taping as well as snapping stills. I walked up and told him my name and that he did not have my permission to photo or use shots of me for any reason. He made a note of it and moved on to the next group of folks. He left after another 10 minutes... no biggie. Way different case but proof a good photog knows whats up as Bobby said earlier.

Dave is right when he says pay for pics has been around forever... 2 words... PARTY PICS!!! Remeber those cats who would hit up High School dances and catch you gettin' your groove on and then post em up at school the next day for a buck?

I do appreciate Opie's question, the only stupid question is one that goes un asked in my opinion. It is however amazing to read some of the BS replies to the question. Great recession proof entertainment.
