FYI - The course will not be closed to casual players. That is something only possible at Pease Park. Hopefully with prior warning that a tournament is taking place, a parking lot full of vehicles, and lots of long waits, casuals will be discouraged from playing the course.

Southwestern part of Austin, TX

Official park name is Slaughter Creek Metro Park, but is known around here as Circle C (for the monstrously huge subdivision it is in).

I haven't compiled the online and paper entries together on one list yet. I'll get that up Tuesday night, Micah.

There won't be food at the course but the manager of Natural Planet Grill on the corner of Escarpment and Slaughter has offered a 10% discount to all tournament players. http://www.naturalplanetgrill.com/

There's also plenty of other places to choose from at that same intersection, at Brodie and Slaughter, and just up Mopac.

MicahMoonWinters
Jun 09 2009, 08:29 PM
Mangieri's is a great Italian grill right at that intersection but it is a little pricey.

It's way more enjoyable if you go in speaking with a strong Italian accent!

Hey Mangieri's comma a get a meata balla and a mozza-reya sub-ah.

Trust me!

Maybe so, CW.

There were a few more entries yesterday. One MA3 and one MA4 looking for a division.

gordonmk
Jun 11 2009, 12:24 PM
Sorry about the all caps - long story...

I got an email from ana that she is going to play, and is even willing to play in one of the men's divisions if pro women doesn't make. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some last minute signups and we get a couple of more pro women - especially if the women help us 'talk it up'.

At our mini last saturday, the rounds only took a little over 3 hours, maybe 3 1/2 at the most even the groups of 4. So maybe it won't be too bad this weekend. And the heat may keep some of the casuals away too. Plus we've had signs out there warning them about the tournament, so hopefully they'll choose to play elsewhere.

Jun 11 2009, 12:29 PM
Wow, the system automatically changed my "all caps" to upper/lower case... Pretty cool.

In general players like 2's. That's why the Crowley tournament has a better turn out. Something like 15 deuceable holes I believe.
This game is evolving and Circle C is the direction it is going. Let the kids play on their little courses while they still have them:)

No offense, Circle C is just a better course. I'd rather shoot a 1000 rated 60 than a 1000 rated 45. More golf, more fun.

Jun 12 2009, 01:12 AM
Micah while I agree with you, the reason the turnout is bigger up north is because of added cash and the fact that the tournament has been around a couple of years. I have no doubt that Circle C is a better course. I look forward to golfing with you this weekend.

MicahMoonWinters
Jun 12 2009, 02:40 AM
Easy there. Anyone who knows me knows I just like throwing plastic at metal no matter where. More people means added cash, and I just wish all those in Crowley were here for this one.

james_mccaine
Jun 12 2009, 10:25 AM
There are more people at Crowley cause the scary moon is in Austin. That and cause they are wimps.

LouMoreno
Jun 12 2009, 12:03 PM
Enough Crowley bashing, y'all. They were scheduled first and have obviously done a lot of hard work to add a lot to the tournament while I've been rushing to put this one together in 3 weeks after a delayed approval process. I can't blame anyone for wanting to play there instead.

Meanwhile at the Battle of Slaughter Creek...

Crowley has set tee times in 8 minute increments x 30 holes means they estimate the round will take right at 4 hours.

No, we are just apparently all bored.

On another note, James are you going to move to OPEN with your son and I or what?

MicahMoonWinters
Jun 12 2009, 05:57 PM
Heck all of them. Joel shot a 56 last Saturday which would be an excellent score in any division. James and Shannon can do just that as well. C is a placement course with the "occasional" advantage to a banger should they want to take the risk. All you need is accuracy.

I spoke with Lou and he has gotten some more signups out at the course this afternoon (with likely more coming as folks get off work).

But there is still plenty of room, so head on out before dark to signup tonight, or you can come to the park tomorrow morning between 7 - 8 am and signup then.

It was great Lou. Anyone braving this weekend was a warrior, a Clandestine warrior bearing a sword forged in the steel of Poseidon's trident! Holy heat it was hot!

Very fun tournament! My only suggestion for next year would be a water slide from one basket to the next tee-box, or maybe a cool tram that circles the course too ya know? Just throwin that out there.

I mean that's all that was really missing, other than my game today:)

Thank you to Olse and Waterloo for giving Austin proper its first championship quality course. I hope this becomes the blueprint for future Austin area courses. Thanks to all the volunteers who donated time working on the course and staffing the tournament. Lou, I would have nevered realized that this was your first foray into the TD'ing arena. Well done my friend. I expect a 'B' Tier here next year as this tournament expands.

You are much wiser than me; chiggers always catch me off guard.

I think some of the baskets are high by design, some maybe because the rock was too hard.

Chigger Remedy - from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Tennessee/Kentucky

1 bar of soap - lye works the best, but your choice
00 fine wool pad
30 minute shower
12 pack of your favorite beer

Scrub the hell out of those suckers with the wool pad and soap while in the shower.
ps...drink the beer first.

james_mccaine

so that would say that some of the baskets at Circle c are not following PDGA GUIDELINES..

I didn't read it that way at all. Complaining about Circle Baskets makes little sense. If the basket is a little higher, aim higher.

I always heard the chigger remedy was to rub it with alcohol and sand. The chiggers would get drunk and throw rocks at each other.

MicahMoonWinters
Jun 15 2009, 05:04 PM
Round rock has a USDGC (the premiere course of our sport) basket well above your head. The regulations only state specs of the basket itself, not its placement.

JerryChesterson
Jun 15 2009, 05:26 PM
Don't now how to prevent them but once you got em take a hot shower. Get the shower as hot as possible, scolding hot. Run the scolding hot water over the places where you have the chigger bites. It feels like extasy, like you are sratching the hell out of that spot, but the beuaty is you are not so they don't get all scabbed over. Repeat twice a day to avoid all scratching and they'll be gone in 2-3 days versus 2 weeks if they scab over. The hot water draws the toxins out of your skin which is what makes you want to inch. I've also heard you can cover the bites with duct tape.

Jun 15 2009, 05:30 PM
drink some benadryl...

not complaining just thought that a PREMIERE place like circle C would have all the baskets the same height or at least close.:rolleyes:;) I like the course just wish it was cart friendly or at least some what.. I will stay north dont you worry..... I have enough olse sidearms I can play up hear... manor, wilco, brushy creek :D:cool:

Jun 15 2009, 06:00 PM
I'm not complaining either, just wondering why. Also, elevated baskets, such as the RR course, or baskets on elevation is different from the distance from the ground beneath to the basket. I would be lying though if I and several card mates didn't have an incredible amount of low putts, which normally would have been good putts. Absolutely love the course, probably more than Manor to be honest, except for varying heights in baskets.

dizzard
Jun 16 2009, 12:36 AM
the baskets are high to teach us to putt grasshopper!, (actually 16 was meant to be a little lower but the rock was difficult all the others are by design.) the forehand holes were designed to encourage one to throw the forehand shot.... it's simply genuis!!!

I think Lou did an outstanding job with this tournament, hard to believe it was his first.

He was conscientious, thorough, and diligent with all the pre-event stuff as well as all weekend during the tournament. I'm sure he'll be just as good with the post-event paperwork, scores, etc. He also got a great bunch of volunteers to help staff, which is key to running a good event.

Thanks to all the players who came out and played through the heat.
Thanks to all the staff and sponsors for making it possible by giving their time, energy, money, and merchandise.
And Biggest Thanks to our newest TD: Louuuuuuuu :D
