Course Notes -
Buckhorn - Pro Divisions and Advanced Men will play the All-Star Layout once again. There might be a tweak or two in the layout from last year, but it most certainly will be a mixed layout of tees again. Once JJ and I figure it out, we will post.
All other divisions will play the short tees.
Kentwood - Same old same old!!
Zebulon - Same old same old!!
Cedar Hills - All pins will be in their regular pin placements. All players will play the long tees except on hole 10.

paypal is coming soon. I talked with the PDGA today about it - obviously they get lots of requests this time of year for tournaments, so it's taking some time.
Sorry for the delay in the response, I've been caught up with the health of my father, my personal health (still don't know what is wrong with me), the Canes, my upcoming vacation, a job interview and just life.
I will posting some interesting information tomorrow, btw.

I see what your saying and I appreciate the kind words about the work I've put in.
I guess the main reason is I know the only way I will be able to play in this event is to play advanced b/c I will need to run that pool while JJ (who obviously will play pro) will run that pool.

Yes, this will be a NC Points Event.
However, I have no knowledge of how a USDGC rep will be selected this year from NC so have no idea if there is even NC USDGC events or if we are one.
It could be b/c I'm out of the loop from being injured and haven't played in 2 months, however.

MTL21676
Jun 18 2009, 08:01 AM
Oh, I understand totally Rocky.
Here is the explanation for the pools.
We filled a month in advance last year with 90 people. It seemed like there was demand for more than 90 to play this event and with four courses, we had the room to do it. We worked it out this year to have TD's at multiple locations, so we expanded.
The most obvious idea was 72 pros at one course and 72 ams at the other. However, we won't get 72 pros and would likely get 72 Ams (we had 58 last year). Why would it be fair for a course to have 30 people playing and another course have 72 with people wanting to play?
So then I thought about saying something along the lines of "ok, we have X number of spots in each division." Once again, my fear would be open spots in certain divisions with waiting lists in the other.
The only fair way I could think to do it was just say first 144 to sign up get in and then we will move the pools around accordingly. This allows the fairest way for people to sign up and also allows me some flexibility with assigning pools. For example, if I have 50 advanced players and 25 advanced masters, I could still put these people in the same pool b/c I am still under 90 for that pool. This ensures that everyone competing in the same division against each other stays with that pool.
The only thing I know right now is that Open divisions will be in pool A with JJ running things and Advanced will be in Pool B with me running that pool. All other divisions will fill in accordingly. I am keeping in mind things like parents with children and things like that.
Hope this helps.

Since people do not want to pre-register for this event, I have to make a drastic change. I have too much personally and financially invested in this event to have people wait until the last minute to do everything.
The event will now be capped at 90 players and all players will be in the A Pool which plays Buckhorn Kentwood Zebulon Cedar in that order.
I apologize to those who thoughtfully pre-registered, but at this point, I don't know what to do.
Registration will remain open until we fill. I can't afford to lose money on this event.
Once again - the cap is now 90. This leaves about 65 spots left in the event. Please pre-register - when an even has people pre-register, it makes it better for the players b/c then the TD's can focus on making it a better event instead of doing what I'm doing right now - stressing out about how I'm going to personally lose over $2,000 in this event.

I didn't expect to get bombarded with entries left and right like I did last year, but I at least expected more than 25 people two and a half weeks out.

Well I'm really considering coming down now. The 2 hours between rounds should make it much easier to beat the heat, and give my time to stop by my apartment. The 2 hour break is probably a bit excessive (it could be 1.5 hours and be fine) but it gives players PLENTY of time and also allows for out of towners who might get lost be able to find their way.

Can you explain how the vibram open spots will work? How many spots? Is it lowest overall score regardless of division. Is anyone who is preregistered already qualified?
Ok - got a free few minutes and I've heard back from Steve Dodge so here we go.
- 2 spots from our tournament will be awarded spots in the Vibram Open.
- All advanced men and everyone from all pro divisions are eligible for the spots. The other divisions are not simply b/c they are playing a different layout at Buckhorn thant these divisions. The Vibram Open is Male Open, Female Open and Male Grandmaster only. So if someone is 45 and qualifies from masters, they will have to play Open there. If someone is advanced and 30 and qualifies, they will have to play open. If someone is 50 and qualifies in masters or advanced, they will have the choice of open or grandmasters.
- Anyone who is elgible for a spot (meaning those competing in the above listed divisions) must inform me by the start of the 3rd round (preferably pre-registration or lunch on Saturday) that they are intending to qualify. Anyone who has failed to do this by this time will not be eligble to qualify.
- This does not work like USDGC - if the top finisher is not intending to qualify, the spot rolls down. It goes to the top 2 people that intend to qualify.
- At this time no one registered is qualified. Certain people like Schweb or JJ who were qualified based on Tour Card Status are now not qualified because those spots are full (this is per Steve Dodge).
- The 2 winners will recieve an official invite envelope from me for which they have 30 days to mail in to secure their spot. All tournament entry fees will be due at this time as well.
I hope this clears things up.

At last year's event, down 7 strokes to Brian Schweberger, Michael Johnansen started birdie birdie birdie birdie birdie birdie birdie birdie birdie birdie birdie birdie (breathe) birdie birdie birdie birdie birdie before making his only par of the round on 18 at Kentwood shooting a course record 37 and erasing his 7 throw deficit tying for the lead heading to Sunday.
- Number 39 - David Wiggins, Sr. That 7 throw lead was thanks to one of the most amazing rounds our sport has ever seen. Shooting a 39 on the Buckhorn All-Star Layout, Brian Schweberger not only started with a 7 shot lead, but became only the 2nd person in our sports history to crack the 1100 mark for a single round. This historic round is only bested by Brian Skinner and Ken Climo and along with Matt Orum, Schweberger is one of only 4 people to ever get over the 1100 mark for ratings.
- Number 43 - Michael Spivey - Thanks to the 37 of Michael Johansen, Schweberger still had to play solid on Sunday to hold on to the win. His 43 at Cedar Hills the final round solidified the win and an $825 paycheck.
Congrats to Kurt, Dave and Michael.
We still have one more mystery registration prize - and it's VERY soon. Register quickly to get a chance at it!

The final Mystery Registration Prize has been hit!
Congrats to number 47, Alex Riggan.
Last year, on the second card, Scotty Faison burned up Zebulon firing the hot round of, you guessed it - 47, to jump up to the lead card. Scotty finished tied for 5th and took home $213 for his efforts.

Yeah - a hole that everyone can reach, but still challenging and nothing like hole 1 where there are lots of lucky shots that get through.

Played Cedar Hills today and it looked good. Be careful on hole #15's teepad though. There is some residual mud from puting in the bench and with the little shower earlier today it was very slippery. Believe me when I say I threw my drive for 15 up 18's fairway while doing a 360 to the ground. :)

Last year I posted about 50 times that if you did not check in by 8:30 at Buckhorn, your spot will be given away.
Despite posting it over and over to the point people were asking me to stop, someone was STILL late.
So I realized that my efforts to promote that fully was in vein, so this year, all you get is the flyer and this one notice and maybe one more Friday night...
If you don't check in by 8:30 AM at Buckhorn Sunday, you will not play. You will not get a refund. This is a time - based event and starting on time is crucial.
If for some reason on Saturday you have issues that delay you arriving by 8:30, simply call me and let me know. 919-389-5780.

JJ I am hoping to have a present for you, Hofmann and Schweb. I am sitting here watching the 2009 Azalea Tournamant DVD right now and i am hoping to have the first finished batch by the end of the week. Boz did a great job putting together a DVD of the final round and i want to give everyone that was in the DVD a copy. That would be JJ, Mcree,Schweb,Rory and Hofmann.

Just a warning for anyone going out to Kentwood to practice, there's a yellow jacket's nest behind hole 8's basket in the ditch. Hofmann posted on raleighdiscgolf.com that he just got stung a bunch of times. MTL just called me and said he was going to take care of it before Saturday's round.
Chris: There's only one pool now that's it's down to 90 people.

How high is the water at the Buckhorn course.
I'd say perfect.
It's not super high where 11 is hard as crap, but it's not like you've got 100 feet of land where it's too easy.
My guesses..
8 - about 30 feet of land until the water
9 - The reeds are further back than last year - I'd say there is about 10 - 20 feet more of inbounds than last year.
10 - Exactly the same as last year - about 25 feet of inbounds right of the basket
11 - About 45 feet of land pin high.

Amazing golf w/ those two 1085 rated rounds. I thought both were course records?!
Maybe not. Could someone fill me in as far as what holes were missed for the round by Mike-Jo please, MTL. I wouldn't mind some details on Schwebby's sick round either.
Is Lil Wigg, Scweb & Mike-Jo all going to Worlds? Can you say MOMENTUM ? ?

The 42 at Zebulon ties the record with Greg Williams and Walt Haney.
The 41 at Cedar Hill IS a course record for Cedar Hills.
MJ started on 2 and missed it to begin the round. He then got 3 and 4 before missing 5. He then went on a run getting 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 (with a 3) and then missed a 25 footer on 14. He got 15, 16, 17, 18 (with a 3) and 1 to finish out with a sick 41 (-15).
Not sure about Schweb's round, but I know he missed 17. Along with 3, 9, and 16, not sure where the other 2 3's were. However after missed 17, he got 18 - and the ceiling was so low, this was a huge bonus and probably one of 1 or 2 dueces on the hole for the round.
MJ isn't going to worlds, but you are right about Wigg and Schweb - HUGE momentum.
