Hi E,
You are in for a real treat, this tournament is the best of the best for Amateurs, this is one you do not want to miss. You will feel like a professional and treated like a King, during the entire weekend.
So far we have players from California, Montana, Kansas, North Carolina, New Jersey, Illinois and Canada.
The course is only used for 2 weeks out of the year and has some hills that really get you pumped to throw them.
Check out the link of who is signed up at http://www.pdga.com/tournament-results?TournID=8399

I almost hope I don't cash, as I try open this year, so I can come back and play this amazing tournament!!
The course is epic, no words describe it....Discraft and the lizard give tons of great plastic away.....they basically fed me the whole time, breakfast and lunch/dinner......and they gave me a mini with my picture on it in less than 24 hours...how cool is that!!
Make sure you keep your mini in your pocket the whole time, because games and prizes will be given away at moments notice......and just hope that Peaches is a good sport again:)
With Payouts/Awards/Food/Entertainment/Service, there is no better value around...period.
If you get invited to this tournament....make sure you go.....it's one of the best disc golf experiences I've ever had in the 12+ years I've played.

For this tournament, I'm staying with Matt and Dawn Lacey at their home.
Of the people pre-regged is anyone else staying here?
My plans have change a bit, and I'm flying in. I'm looking to carpool/split a rental car from the airport to and from the Lacey's house, course, etc.
Rentals from thurs to sun/mon are running around $125-$150

The list of players is just starting to grow. It is now up and a link to it is available at http://www.amnationals.com/register.html
The weather has broken here and we are getting 70 degree days
that will really bring out the tree growth, we have had a lot of rain this spring.
The new course at Kensington may be in by the time this tournament is underway
and it is looking really good. Jim Kenner from Discraft has worked very hard on this new course.
It will be a must to see and play!

http://www.amnationals.com/register.html
The course area is in full bloom and looks great. The baskets should be going in the weekend before the tournament, I will update the actual date once we know for sure.
The player package is coming along well, the value should be $150 to $200 in value and the cost to sign up is only $82 so it is a fantastic deal. I will update player package further in the future.

I have a suggestion that has been called insane by some, but I think it would be a blast.
How about a Lizard Games/Discraft sponsored SuperClass Challenge on the Toboggan? See how many throws it would take to play the course with SuperClass discs. I'm guessing around 100. It has been suggested that your arm would be toast, but since they can't be thrown that hard, I think it would be a nice walk in the park. I think Discraft has a few Ultra-Stars that could be put up for prizes. It could be run Tues. thru Thur. just like the LCQ rounds.
Just a crazy idea.
cgkdisc
May 15 2009, 05:36 PM
That would be a great time for Discraft to introduce a beefed up J-Star/Skystar with weights in the 170-200g range. Several Discraft players have been looking for a Discraft Super Class disc that's heavier with a smaller diameter than the Ultra-Star that would be great for Super Class putting and handling stiffer winds. You might be surprised to see the best scores in the low 70s based on how well these discs fly.

Being from the left coast, it was a tough decision because of the amount of travel required to get to any of these events. After qualifying, I registered as soon as I could because of the fact that you have to qualify. Worlds and BG are open to anyone at some point. I may be one of the lowest rated players in the field but I will have as much fun as possible and learn what I need to to do to get where I want to be.

This is it: Partly, it is because it cannot develop any "legs" because as soon as you do well at this tournament, you're going pro and not coming back. Partly it is because it is not a fundraiser for some pro tournament. Face it, a lot of amateurs go to the tournaments their pro buddies promote. Partly it is because the course is so hard. It is the same hard for everyone, but a lot of players are not used to a course where there are eight or nine holes where they are probably going to get a four, and they don't know how to enjoy a hole that they have to play well to get a three.
So it's a lot of things. But the players' pack and food ensure that no one gets less than what they paid for. The Lizard Games give everyone a chance to go home with something extra. The Speed Golf is an excellent diversion while the tournament crew gets things together for awards. The Pro Skills demonstration is always interesting. If you know how to camp out of your truck, this tournament does not have to cost much more than staying home.

What is the "typical" windsituation at the course.
We have some decent local courses with elavation and wind is always an issue.
I've not heard anthing regarding the wind at Tobaggan and was curious.

Windier in the afternoon. But as a TD of this event for 7 years.... There is ALWAYS a head wind on Hole 3 even if throwing grass up shows a tail wind.
Michigan in general usually does not have big wind unless you are on Lake Michigan. However....That being said, the saying around here is: If you don't like the weather, wait around 5 minutes.

Phil is keeping up with the traditions:
1) Awesome Players Pack (especially for the $75 entry fee)
2) 7 meals provided for the players
3) 3 rounds on one of the best courses around
4) Water/Snack stations around the course
5) Staff that actually cares that you are having a good time.
6) Lizard Games
7) Speed Golf. Can you handle the pain!?
8) Invite to the 'old' TDs afterglow when everything is packed up on Sunday. Take Monday off:)

I suppose the other thing that keeps attendance down is that they just don't let that many people in. 9,300 [or so] active PDGA members are eligible to play Worlds this year and maybe 700 or 800 will. Only about 750 active PDGA members are eligible to play this tournament and last year they had about 100 players. So Am Nationals actually draws a larger percentage of the eligible player base than Worlds.

Good question. It's not absolutely necessary but it is good business practice for an international sports governing body to directly support it's members, manufacturers, and it's bigger events, especially a PDGA major. I can assure you that I am very thrifty with our members money and I take my responsibilities with the association very seriously. Did you know that it is actually less expensive for the PDGA to send an office staffer to marshal an event than it is to send a non-staffer? Here are just a few things that I will be accomplishing on this trip:
Marshal
Rules Official
Daily story and photos for PDGA.com
Feature story and photos for DiscGolfer Magazine
Final round live scoring
Organizational representation at PDGA Major event
Meeting with Discraft
Availability to members, spectators, promoters, volunteers, and media

Well the tournament is finished and congrats to the winner Blaine Kinkel.
I am sorry about the live scoring but due to the terrain at this course there is no cell or internet service in the valley and 14 is part of that. The Scorer put up the final scores on the PDGA site as soon as the players arrived at the scoring tent, so it was done very quickly.
I want to thank all the players, they were very respective of the other players and the course, which was spotless after it was all done, not a piece of trash anywhere. Brian Graham worked very hard all 3 days and was an asset to the tournament. Big thanks to the staff and especially Phil Shelton who did a great job as TD.
I hope everyone is able to talk to a player that attended, to find out what a wonderful tournament this really is. Hope to see more new faces next year. I met so many great people this weekend and I really enjoyed it. It is so great watching the next Super stars of our disc golf community.

Noticed a few people w/ HD cameras at the USADGC and wondered if ANYONE knew where the footage might be posted when edited? Youtube? etc.
Thanks

I'm sure that there was no dig meant there, eh?

So nobody knew the guys taking vids in HD with nice cameras?
Or has a clue of where and when that footage would come to light?
It sure would sweet to see ANY footage from the tourney.
