anyone else get their 1st issue today?

I will reserve my ideas/thoughts until I fully read it, but it looks exactly like Disc Golf World and still run on the masthead by Rick

But I am glad I have the issue already..

now to read it...

Just got it today as well, haven't read it yet, but cover looks similar to DGWN.

aside - yikes. Bad weather just hit my neighborhood in N. Dallas. Severe TStorm warning, and I can see and hear hail.

I just got my issue yesterday.

Pros:

Professional appearance.

Experienced, high-quality staff and contributors comprised of the some of the biggest names in disc golf.

Editorial control by the PDGA over the content.

A worldy feel, with coverage of disc golf issues & events on both coasts of the United States as well as in Europe.

Focus on minorities in disc golf. There are articles on a kids event made possible through a national nonprofit organization and a PDGA grant, as well as an all-women's tournament event.

Focus on relevant topics of today: We read about a course facing environmental & political challenges, and how to sell disc golf in a tough economy.

Cons:

Not enough content. I read the whole thing cover to cover in less than about 25 minutes.

Too many advertisements, especially full pages of ads.

Redundant player profiles. Liz Lopez is profiled three separate times!

Focus on tournament play. As was my concern with Disc Golf Magazine and Flying Disc Magazine when they came out, I do not want to see a clone of Disc Golf World News which focused far too much on tournament play, especially the professional circuit. While this first issue does include other topics such as instructional articles, equipment review, course installation, etc. there is still too much attention given to professional tournament disc golf. Nowadays the sport has grown so much that there are a myriad of available topics to cover other than just tournament play.

I disagree. My favorite part of the old DGWN was reading about how the big events played out, along with pictures of the courses and the elite players playing the courses.
That is entertaining to me, but other content may be more useful to others.

I doubt Rick really changed his mind set on how to make a magazine.

We'll see how it plays out though.

We got one of ours at the Calhoun home yesterday. I had business calls right up until near my bed time and didn't get to do more than glance through it, but it's a quality-looking magazine.

I am impressed by what I have seen so far, and extremely impressed that the first issue is out so quickly. (And, so far, haven't spotted any typos!) Great job, folks.

P.S. It would be nice if PDFs of the articles were available on the website for download by members.

Don't get me wrong, I am entertained by professional tournament disc golf and big events as well. I wouldn't have been a Co-Director of Scoring for Pro Worlds 2005 & 2007, Pro/Am Worlds 2008 and 2009, and multiple National Tour events if I didn't enjoy professional tournament disc golf and the sport being played at its highest levels.

But with such extensive online coverage these days, which typically includes a writeup, photos, and video coverage on the PDGA and host tournament websites, real-time scoring, scores & ratings uploaded after the event, not to mention dozens of message board posts describing the action, I don't see the need to provide an extensive recap in the magazine, often coming out months later after the event has concluded.

Maybe one article about a PDGA major is acceptable, but it shouldn't be necessary to practically fill the entire issue with tournament recaps. There are so many other things going on with the sport of disc golf that can/should be covered.

Remember that one major use of the magazine is to drop it on desks of people that do not know anything of disc golf.

Event coverage sounds like a good thing.

I must admit FDM was better in terms of articles and look. It wasn't cluttered by ads. Can't wait for my next issue of FDM....

and I'm glad this mag is out too, even if it feels like we stepped back in time a few years.

How about some coverage of the NorCal area. It seems to me that we get totally ignored except for the Masters Cup. There are tons of excellent players here that deserve a little blurb. Just seems to me that there is an East Coast/Midwest bias. Just my opinion.

I think this version also doubles as the tour magazine, so it's filling double duty. So I am sure it'll be a bit more different from a content standpoint in the next issue. At least that's what i hear, I haven't seen a copy as of yet.

An option would be for you and/or your NorCal players to submit local stories/articles for possible publication. Rick Rothstein has asked players for magazine content........here's the link to DiscGolfer's "Help Wanted" post. Ya, ya, ya, I saw that, gotcha. I've just noticed in previous years that norcal gets the short end of the stick a lot when it comes to Rick's mag, yet we have 1 of the best series in the country. I've never claimed to be a writer, personally..

That's because she was nominated for rookie of the year, and player of the year, that's HUGE if you ask me.

First, I like the magazine, but I always did. There's a lot of beef about the adverts, apparently you've not read other national magazines, it's pretty much the norm - like it or not. Second, as always, I learned things I didn't know, that's the mark of a good mag to me.

Third, Rick, are ya out there? Add a submitted Tips section. There are 1001 small things that people post here and in other venues that would make a great tips section.

Here's a freebie for you: Go to your local scuba shop, buy an underwater slate. These slates are small (3 x 5 inches) and you can write on them with a pencil in any weather, i.e. rain! Take a ruler and a sharpie and draw in a score card. Shazam, you've got a water-proof score card for about $9 bucks. Use a pencil and eraser just like you would on paper.

Like the magazine, glad to see some professionals back in the game.

Hmmm I haven't gotten mine yet. Looking forward to getting another mag though, I personally had issues with the FDM magazines. I never got my last 2 magazines and when I did get them they were here always like a month or 2 after most people got theirs, pretty annoying if you ask me. I dunno y I never got my last issues from them, but they said we were suppose to get 6 issues last year and I got 3. Pretty messed up if you ask me. Anybody else not get there last issues last year?

Okay, it is the middle of June and I have received ONE magazine this year. What is the deal? I thought that the PDGA took over the publication again because of the hard times of last year's mag distributors, but it looks like the same ol song and dance routine to me...

Any answers?

It's coming out 4 times per year. The next issue is being printed and many should receive it before July 1. That's two issues in the first six months, right on plan.

The PDGA office just received the summer issue (issue 2) of DiscGolfer magazine this morning and the mailings to members have already begun. Chuck is right in that we are on schedule and members should begin receiving theirs in the next week or so depending on location.

The newest mag has a nice photo of Liz Lopez on the cover and artices on the Collegiate Disc Golf Championship, Lifting for Distance, PDGA Tour Coverage, Disc Golf in Tuscany, Flying Back in Time to 1984, Gripology 101, and a preview article on the KC Worlds.

If you are not a PDGA member and would like to purchase a subscription to DiscGolfer, visit http://www.pdga.com/discgolfer-magazine. Bulk copies at discounted rates can also be purchased by retailers at this same address.

Seeing that there is only 9 days of winter in 2010, is probably why it is called winter 2011.

The issue from last December with Nikko on the cover for winning the 2009 USDGC is labeled Winter 2009. If the latest issue is Winter 2011, that means there is no Winter 2010 issue at all.

Not that it's a huge deal, just a change in what they consider the first issue of the year (Winter instead of Spring).

I really enjoy the magazine and appreciate the content. However, I am disappointed in the lack of feedback or follow-up. The new editor came on board some time ago and indicated that his focus would be on the grass roots of the sport and requested articles about clubs, local tournaments, seniors, etc. I have contributed potential content for all of these areas mentioned. There is no acknoweldgement of receipt, no suggestion for improvements to the submissions to make them more publication-worthy, etc. Perhaps the staff is inundated with submissions and are not able to review them. But just to make no response is simply not good business, suggests that you really do not want submissions, and DIScourages further involvement or interest from "the grass roots." Just felt you should be aware of the perception from myself and likely others.

This really has to stop. Scanning the last discgolfer magazine, I am shocked at seeing the chosen photos of top players with contorted faces in close ups. This magazine will not stay on the coffee table, as I have already endured laughter from the fiance'. Having the same photos month after month....stop. Much better suited would be the concentration before the run up and throw. Please look at the photos as just for a second, as a non-discgolfer....

Agreed...there are numerous things that are adding up where I will not be re-joining next year. I am a professional in a completely different field and will admittedly be a life-long disc golf amateur. There is really not much point for me in joining year to year as I know I will only get to play three maybe four tournaments at most. I used to enjoy the magazines from the early 2000s but these are terrible. Not even anything mentioned about the Hambrick??? And the last few issues they did articles about Love???? And a professional fighter who plays disc golf??? Cmon....I feel like Ive been b*tching more and more lately but maybe its cause Im getting old...HEY PDGA!!! LISTEN TO YOUR MEMBERS!!! FIX THIS STUFF!! THE WEBSITE IS SO FAST IT BLOWS MY MIND LOL!!
