Come one, come all! It is time once again, the Paul Giles Memorial will be held in Athens, Texas Cain Park this coming May 2-3. Within the next couple of days this will be posted on www.titledisc.com. (http://www.titledisc.com.) The event will be a PDGA sanctioned event this year as a C Tier. Max signup will be held at 120 players. the format will be three rounds of 24 holes with the possibility of either a fourth round of the historical "killer" holes or added money doubles. We will be deciding within the next couple of days.
This event was great several years back and we hope it will be again. Please set this time aside and we will see you in May!

so will it be two rounds of 24 holes on Saturday, and one round on Sunday?
are there 24 holes on this course? I've only played it once, and can only recall playing 18 holes. It seemed like there was room for more, so with the 6 extra holes be temp baskets?
Also, are these "killer holes" more like safari holes or a backwards course?
baldguy
Mar 25 2009, 03:16 PM
yes, there are 6 extra holes. The "killer holes" he's referring to are safari-type holes that used to be done for the final 9 in this tournament. I *really* hope he brings this back. That final 9 used to be the highlight of the event :)

Wish I could make this in memory of Paul. The killer holes were awesome and worth playing if you can.
Someone please say hello to Ron for me?

The 24 holes include 1 deleted hole and 7 added holes. The 7 added holes are a blast. If you have played the Athens course in the past, these holes are in areas you have probably never even walked. As for the Final 9, I have to talk to Mark Nolan, I would very much like to add them back in. They are fun and tough and really were the highlight of the event in years past. I will be assisting with this event. It is not the PWO 2, it is Athens City Disc Club, but my club wants to help as much as possible so we are covering basic setup and major money.
This event will be a benefit of sorts, to be accounced at the event. No money will be taken from you at sign up, money generated from disc sales, donated, any raffle, etc will be used for the benefit. So all entry fees will be paid out, with the exception of PDGA fees. There is added money for the Pro divisions.
This year we will be running a silent auction, if you are interested in donating anything please PM me and I will fill you in on the details. The money generated is going to a ACDC selected cause and will be well used.

I first want to apologize for not having promoted this event as is it's due. For those of you that know me I work hard on the PWO I run in December, but I have been working a tremendous amount of hours and have simply not had the time to post and talk this event up.
A little history, The Paul Giles Memorial is held in remembrance of a man who had a serious impact on disc golf in east Texas. He has left a legacy that has been felt, not just in east Texas, but throughout Texas, Louisiana and Oklahoma. I was not fortunate enough to ever meet Paul, but I do know many that did and they all speak very highly of him. Paul was thought so well of that in the past four years several TDs have stepped in to make sure this event stays alive. For this we owe a debt of gratitude to Bryan James and Brian Mace. This year the Tyler Rose City Disc Club is helping the Athens crew to take on the burden and joy of running this event themselves and hopefully this will be cared for by Athens City Disc Club in the future.
The Paul Giles Memorial will be a C Tier event, but dont let that C effect you. This has always been a blast, even when the rain was 3 inches deep on the fairway. The course is both technical and fun and with the added holes it is a great play. This year the plan is to go back to the old format of play, two rounds of 24 holes on Saturday, one round of 24 holes on Sunday and a cut to the top 1/3 for a final nine of kick ***** holes.
Pre-registration is open at TitleDisc (http://www.titledisc.com/?q=node/863) and it would help if you would pre-reg and do it often! We will also be running a silent auction and would appreciate any and all donations. All proceeds will go back to the Athens club for course development and for a small benefit they are raising money for.
Please talk this up and I hope to see everyone May 2-3. For information and pictures of the course go to http://www.webjam.com/cain_park_disc_golf As with most courses, this pictures do not do Caine park justice!

As many of you may know, World's Biggest is being held May 2-3 as well. The Paul Gile's memorial will be held as a celebration of this event and World's Biggest merchandise will be available as well. So if you are wanting to make this event and a World's Biggest you can be involved with both now!! Pre-registeration can be handled on www.titledisc.com (http://www.titledisc.com)

Just to generate some excitement, we are right at 2 weeks away.
We will be playing doubles Friday afternoon and taking signups. Please try to sign up early, teeshirts will be available for the amateur players, but sizes may be limited. So get there early. Money will be added to the Pro divisions. It looks like we will have twice the required cash, and as my other tournament the am payouts should be very good.

Hello everyone. I am Mark Nolan's wife and I suppose course representative for Cain Park as well as a member of Athens Community Disc Club. I hope everyone is able to make it out to play this year. Mark & I are looking to take the tournament over next year and we absolutly appreciate Jerry doing it for us this year. If you have any questions that you dont feel like bugging Jerry with, please give me a call at (903) 275-0113 - I have been helping Jerry get everything ready so I can probably answer just about any question you might have. Look for later posts about Hotel accomodations for the weekend and about where you might be able to crash for free/cheap (Mark and I will play host to a couple of people indoors and we always have tent space in our field/lawn). Also, check out my website for Cain Park and the Athens Community Disc Club {ACDC} - http://www.webjam.com/cain_park_disc_golf - Happy Disc'ing

Hello! Everyone interested in attending the Giles this year: I have compiled a list of all the hotels/motels in Athens and their current rates for you. As this tournament falls on 1st Monday weekend, rates will rise as rooms are taken. These prices are as of today - April 9, 2009. I was told by every hotel in the area that rooms go fast, so if you need a room your best bet is to make reservations early. We will have a few spots at our home for tents to be put up etc. More on that in a later post though.
**PDGA MEMBERS: you can get a discount at the following motel by calling the 1-800 number on the back of this year's PDGA membership card to make reservations**
Super 8 Motel - local number (903) 675-7511
Current rates for basic room:
1 bed - $99.90 night / 2 beds - $109.98 + tax
*****The remainder of these have no specials or discounts currently available******
- America's Best Value Inn (What had been Spanish Trace) (903) 675-5173
1 bed room/1 person $89.99 + tax per night
- Budget Inn (903) 675-5194
1 bed room/1 person $60 + tax per night
- Holiday Inn Express (903) 675-2500
1 King bed /1 person $123.99 + tax per night
- Quality Inn (903) 675-9214
1 Queen bed/1 person $69.99 + tax per night
- Victorian Inn (903)677-1470
1 bed/1 person $70 + tax per night
Please keep in mind that the prices will go up as rooms are taken - and since it's 1st Monday, they tend to get taken quickly. Hope this info helps some of you out! See you at the Giles!

Ladies: this tournament has not had a large turn-out of ladies in any division for quite a few years now - you all come out and show the men that we love the sport just as much as they do! - besides, who says it won't be a woman winning that ace pot?!

I have the honor to be partnering with Lew Satterfield! :D- Our trophies for this event are being custom made by a company that works in steel - they will be of the same material that our current bagtags are - with each place getting a different size & powder-coating (I believe he said he was going to try to get them powder coated in gold, silver, & bronze)

Before you decide whether or not to get in the ace pot, Athens is starting it at $150. That is more than I won last year when I hit it on the second to last hole and since our last hole was 15A, I was not going to be hitting it. There is a rumor that $100 cash is to be hidden on the course somewhere for any player to find and collect. Right now that depends on registeration. So get in there and register!
We are now at 1 week, be seeing you!

Yes you did run it that year (and we Athens people are still indebited to you for it.) We wish you could make it out for the Giles, but Mark & I understand how it is to run your own business and not have dependable people you can leave the job in the hands of. It is funny, but at this time before a tournament, I, as a TD, have the song "Final Countdown" stuck in my head. I have been working 60, 70 and once an 80 hour week for the last three months and I am ready for a little R&R. We will be running doubles on Friday and I am suggesting the following:
Amateur
Intermediate $20 per team
Advanced $20 per team
Women or mixed teams, need at least two teams per division, $20 per team
Pro
At least 2 teams per division, any division: $30 per team

I went out to play/check on the course today since we had all that rain. Even if it is sunny all day tomorrow, there are going to be some very wet spots. Some tee boxes are going to be slightly moved to keep players out of the water/slick mud. As of today, the creek that runs behind hole 9 and to the right of 10 etc. is OB - it is running quickly and the ponds are FULL. Bring extra footgear because you're gonna get wet this weekend.
