I agree, but I think the majority of people do not like Buckhorn.

I don't get it, but I think as a whole, people will be happier with Cedar Hills.

I am just happier cuz I can get up at 8:00 and still be there in plenty of time.

I believe Buckhorn is the toughest course in our area. I also believe it is the best test of a players skills. However, over the years I have heard nothing but whining about how unfair Buckhorn is. The funny thing is the vast majority of the complaints have come from right handed, top level Pros.

The self proclaimed best thumber in the world has stated that he will never play Buckhorn again. The current #6 player in the World has said he won't come back as long as we play Buckhorn.

So, in an effort to attract some players (including lefties), I have decided to move the Crosstown back to Cedar Hills & Zebulon.

I would love it if people stopped complaining and stepped up with offers to help.

I liked Buckhorn when I got to play it at the XTown a couple years ago. It's a shame that whiners get to dictate things for others - maybe I should whine louder - then maybe I'd get my way about stuff ;)

I like Cedar Hills too though - it's just that I've spent 20 years playing Cedar - and Buckhorn is sweet. Oh well - I'll be there either way. The beer (Mystery Brown Ale #1) got its first rack last night (at 2 weeks old - it was really yummy) - should be ready by the end of April - no problem.

...so if I whine about having the tourney at Cedar for the next few years, it may return to Buckhorn one day? Big booo :( Buckhorn is tough but everyone has to play the same course. Just b/c people whine shouldn't make you alter the format, imo. Trust me, there would have been a great turnout had you kept it at Buckhorn, since its a USDGC qualifier. This is the reason for the decrease in attendance in the past couple of years (not being a qualifier) not b/c we were playing Buckhorn.

Kirk, your efforts are much appreciated! Sorry, had to defend the Horn!

This clearly needs a bump -- only 21 players show as registered at this point. 15 MPO and 6 MMO.

I am trying to arrange things to head down for the tourney, but it would help the cause to know there would be more folks competing -- I love the excitement of big tournaments... c'mon people, this is an A-Tier on awesome courses and a USDGC qualifier. Sign up -- come on out -- convince me to drive down and join you.

Tempting... definitely helps to have more folks playing. I'm getting very tempted to go.

Who in Raleigh/Zebulon has some extra space on the floor they'd like to offer up? I'll probably only need a place to crash on Saturday night. I'd be driving down early, early Saturday morning and driving back home Sunday after the tourney...

The original plan was to have the leader board cards printed out with each players name. It is easier to accomplish this if everyone pre-registers. Also, Saturday morning registration makes for a very hectic morning.

What amazes me is that there are a lot of players that can't seem to decide if they are going to play until the day before the event.

If MJ got the spot at the Clash, his deadline might be as soon as tomorrow if that spot had the same rules as all the other qualifiers. Isn't the rule that you can only qualify once? Or if you miss your deadline your only other option is Monday Qualifying? Someone might want to tell MJ to make a phone call - just in case that's the case.

Dana
Apr 21 2009, 07:46 PM
Regarding the spot at the Clash, since it is a club spot, I think that they really have until the deadline (Aug?) to fill the spot.

USDGC spot up for grabs (cdgc members only since this is the cdgc club spot)

The spot is for all the work the club does for the USDGC (i.e. carts, etc.). Therefore, the time constraint isn't in play.

To the awarding of the spot, I'm unsure how that will play out. There is some intrigue, but no need to discuss it in this forum. Plus, it's all internal to the club. Like Stack said, I believe he might accept the spot if he qualifies this weekend.

MTL21676
Apr 22 2009, 05:08 PM
I officially withdrew due to injury so I have no vested interest in this or not.

But if takes a spot from someone and already had a spot...then that is just foul - and if I was the guy who got bumped from that, you wouldn't want to be on the other end of that phone call.

Sounds to me like if the spot was advertised to go to the winner of your event - you guys need to confirm that status before he affects other potential qualifiers.

Just because he (whoever he is) has until August to pay - doesn't mean he can pick and choose qualifying venues if he's already qualified.

No intrigue required - name your player before this weekend.

My point was and is that it will not be discussed here.

How do you dictate where something is discussed? USDGC qualifing spots last time i checked are a pretty big deal. and they can and probably will be discussed where ever anyone feels like dicussing them. i think you may want to edit your post to read it will not be decided here. i guess you can decide that on your secert charlotte discussion board.

I love you ant but i as well as alot of other people are in total aggreement with Mr. Gangloff. thank you however for getting this figured out before this weekend. i am sure alot of top pro's in this event will appreciate your attention to this matter. thanks man for the info.

gang4010

Frankly it is none of your concern.

I'll take BW Dave's comments a step further.
It is indeed the concern of all the competitors at Raleigh - and at every other qualifier.

Knowing full well that MJ has a likely potential to qualify at virtually ANY venue he attends - you guys in Charlotte should honor your advertised statement for the winner of your event to get your club spot. Knowing that MJ can qualify elsewhere doesn't give you latitude to give the spot away to some other player who you may deem as "deserving".

If you are the Clash TD - you should follow the first rule of being a TD (unwritten as it may be) - honor what you publish / don't publish anything you are unwilling to honor.

I don't understand why there is any intrigue or need to "work diligently" at all. The decision was made for you when the event ended a month ago.

I was getting a bit upset until I went back and read all the posts. I can see where it looks like we are looking for the most deserving player. However, that isn't the case. Stack's quote is incorrect, and I will leave it at that. As I stated previously, this will be resolved prior to the event. Most likely, today. Thanks, Ant

what exactly are you missing stack? MJ's "acceptance" (?????????) of the USDGC spot that was advertised to be awarded at the clash directly affects everyone in the field at the Crosstown. this is not sidetracked at all. the way i see it it is one of the most pertinent topics of the event.

Thank you Dr. Wiggins for your well put statement. I guess now the USDGC's has another issue on their hands. last year it was qulifiers that failed to register in time and tried to qualify again on monday. Hey Matt, congrats on the qualifying spot!

Was there a playoff for the final two USDGC spots?

We we're all pulling for our Brazilian friend...

Maybe the rules should be ammended to include all ties for the 5th USDGC spot, especially when you consider that the PDGA does not allow players to break a tie unless it's for first place. In this case, the rule would appear to have punished one of the players who traveled the furthest distance to the tournament... and so happened to finish six strokes ahead of the next competitor. I also understand its complex as the USDGC has field size limitations.

Obviously a sudden death playoff would be fair, however in my opinion the current rule is a too vague...

In case of a tie for the final position, the tournament director may: 1) hold a sudden death playoff
to determine the winner, 2) award the spot to the player with the lowest final round score, or 3)
award the spot to the player with the highest (current) PDGA Player Rating. Each position must be
verified by the tournament director immediately following the event.

I'm just curious which path Kirk chose.

Regardless, great Sunday finish and win for Brian!
And congrats to JJ, Matt and Mjo.... qualified!

Not too worried about Fab, he's a safe bet to qualify at Worlds.

There was a playoff.

Hole 1 at Zebulon is about 290 and there is a creek that runs perpendicular with the fairway. It is straight and then turns right at the end as you go over the creek.

Erik Smith tees first and hits the bucket with his sidearm.
Fab then trows and hits the limbs over the creek, not crossing it at any point, and falls OB.
Matt then putts it about 20 feet.

Fab has about a 75 foot putt now and if he misses, Erik and Matt can lay up to get in. He steps up and drains it. SICK!

Erik and Matt make their putts to get in.

It was an amazing putt from Fab. He played great all weekend and what a super nice guy.

xterramatt
Apr 27 2009, 12:02 PM
Fab is a FABulous putter. After he threw OB, I had to make the decision, do I go for the drive or lay up and get the safe three. I decided, after watching Fabricio canning 50 footers like they were nothing, that I had to go for the drive. I'm glad I did. Schweb asked me after I threw... Why didn't you lay up? I was like: He'll make that putt!!! And he did. Exciting finish. There's nothing like the butterflies you get in your stomach like when you have to play off for a USDGC golden ticket. This is my THIRD playoff... and first successful one.

If Fabricio continues to putt like that, he'll get in somewhere for sure.

Hey Matt,

Thanks brother. I did finally hear from Corey W... good call going for the two. Well said... he makes so many 50ft+ putts, it motivates me to work on the short ones... just to keep up.

Hats off to Kirk for utilizing the playoff.

I remain hopeful USDGC office will consider a rule change that would reward quality play at the regional qualifiers, and not further limit talented players from competing at the USDGC.

Congrats again Matt!
