Who's the team to beat in the NL? We all know the Mets and Cubs will fold like usual. I personally think the Cards will shock the world and make another run at the pennant.

I am a die hard cards fan so I obviously want them to win but realistically I think it is the Tigers year. They are similar to the Cards or 2006. 2 years prior they where the best team in the regular season and got the World Series but didn't cash it in. This year they cash it in!

Here's my pre-season predictions...
AL EAST
1. Boston Red Sox
2. Toronto Blue Jays
3. New York Yankees
4. Tampa Bay Rays
5. Baltimore Orioles
NOTES: No surprise that I think the BoSox win the division. I think that this is the year Toronto's boys stay healthy, the one and only year. The Yankees are dealing with a rotation in flux and the Joba Chamberlain in the rotation experiment will see growing pains.
AL CENTRAL
1. Detroit Tigers
2. Cleveland Indians (WILD CARD)
3. Chicago White Sox
4. Kansas City Royals
5. Minnesota Twins
NOTES: The ChiSox are a team without an identity, neither rebuilding nor going for broke. The Tigers' offense will be smoking hot but the rotation will surprise some people (Bonderman, when healthy [see 1st half 2007] is a legit number two). The Indians will be tough as hell. The Royals' young and potent offense will vault them out of the cellar.
AL WEST
1. Los Anafornia Angels
2. Seattle Mariners
3. Texas Rangers
4. Oakland Athletics
NOTES: There is little surprising about this division, except that I think that this is the year that Oakland's perpetual rebuild while contending status finally falters. Texas has some nice pieces, finally a nice minor league system as well (shockingly) and they're going to see a resurgence in coming years.
NL EAST
1. New York Mets
2. Atlanta Braves
3. Philadelphia Phillies
4. Washington Nationals
5. Florida Marlins
NOTES: The Marlins are this year's Nationals, they'll be predicted to lose 110 plus, and come out with barely 100 and their young core will develop well. Atlanta will surprise some people (Mike Hampton, I believe! ha). The Phillies are all offense and poor Brett Myers will get shuttled into the bullpen at some point. And the Mets are going to tear it up.
NL CENTRAL
1. Milwaukee Brewers
2. Chicago Cubs (WILD CARD)
3. Cincinnati Reds
4. Houston Astros
5. St. Louis Cardinals
6. Pittsburgh Pirates
NOTES: The Astros won't necessarily be that good, but the Cardinals will be that bad. Pujols will see extended down time and the team around him will falter, with Troy Glaus having little effect. The Brewers will flex some muscle and crash the playoff party, barely edging out a high salary Cubs team. The Cubs and Brewers will beat up on a weak threesome at the bottom of the division to allow one of them the take the Wild Card for sure.
NL WEST
1. Arizona Diamondbacks
2. Colorado Rockies
3. San Diego Padres
4. Los Angeles Dodgers
5. San Francisco Giants
NOTES: Look at the Diamondbacks. They will not lose five games in a row this year. There's a good chance that they don't lose four games in a row more than once or twice at the very most. Their offense is young, their pitching is solid, very very good. Unfortunately for the Rockies the bottom of this division will be surprisingly good with a solid Dodgers team and the Giants not as putrid as people expect, preventing a Wild Card from coming out of the NL West again.
And my long distance forecast...
ALDS
Red Sox > Indians
Tigers > Angels
ALCS
Tigers > Red Sox
NLDS
Mets > Cubs
Diamondbacks > Brewers
NLCS
Diamondbacks > Mets
WS
Diamondbacks > Tigers
NOTES: Because no matter how much I love the Tigers, the old adage holds true: good pitching beats good hitting, and great pitching beats great hitting. Danny Haren and Brandon Webb as half of a four man rotation? If Randy Johnson is healthy he's a good enough third man to win one game in a seven game series.

That is rediculous ... here is what Vegas is saying ...
2008 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL OVER/UNDER WIN TOTALS
Pittsburgh Pirates 70.0
Houston Astros 76.0
Cincinnati Reds 79.0
St. Louis Cardinals 80.0
Unless Oswalt pitches everyday and Hunter Pence hits in every spot in the order you have no chance. Any team that Albert on it has a chance to contend, not to mention we have Wainwright and Carpenter and one of the best bullys in the NL. The Cards are a long shot, the Astros are an even longer long shot.
ODDS TO WIN THE 2008 NATIONAL LEAGUE CENTRAL
Chicago Cubs 11/10
Milwaukee Brewers 7/5
St. Louis Cardinals 6/1
Cincinnati Reds 8/1
Houston Astros 20/1
Pittsburgh Pirates 60/1

Teams in the National League I think Houston will be better than: Pirates, Cardinals, Giants, Marlins, Nationals. I think that Pujols is going to spend significant time on the disabled list with this elbow issue. I hope I'm wrong, of course, but I don't like this year for St. Louis.
james_mccaine
Mar 07 2008, 01:13 PM
Carpenter and Wainwright??? Well, I guess if Carpenter can thrown 11 innings this year, he'll help more than last year. Wainwright ain't all that impressive. Seems like a flukey year last year with a whip of 1.4 yet a good ERA. We'll see how he does this year.
If you think Pence is the only bat on the Astros, you really don't know much about the Astros. Still, the basic premise that their arms might be weak is reasonable. I just think they have a much greater upside than y'all are implying.
JerryChesterson
Mar 10 2008, 05:09 PM
Wainwright wasn't a fluke, he was in the bully before that was lights out there too. He's the real deal. A for sure #2 and could be an Ace in the making. Of course we are relying on him to be our ace.
I'll give you El Cabio (sp) he's a good hitter too and I want to believe in Berkman but he hasn't been the same the past few years. Other than that the lineup is weak. Did that HR Pujols hit in 2006 ever land yet?

James, those few people need to be the #2-5 starters and the gloves of Wigginton, Tejada, and Lee.
Cincy, Houston and St. Louis will be fighting for 3rd, unless Dusty has his starters throw their arms off by midseason. Milwaukee should overcome the youth factor of last year and hopefully Yost got smarter in the offseason. The Cubs will find a way to suck.

El Caballo: Spanish for "Lost Lumbering Monster in the Field." Bourn had better be careful else he might get killed in left-center.
The Astros lineup isn't weak. It's partly unproven (Bourn, Matsui at sea level, Towles), but not weak. That said, Tejada hasn't exactly looked like the 2004 version when he peppered the LF brick wall during the HR derby and Berkman needs to shed the Fat Elvis look and get his power back.

I went to Chicago several years ago on business and the company I was calling on had an event in the private places across from Wrigley's right field. The score went back and forth and the Cubs were winning late in the game and I mentioned to one of the locals how good the game was and that it looked like the Cubs were going to win. 2nd best team in the League...come on Cubbies..
your turn Bender :)
:)
One, it's April. Only Cub fans and players (Ronnie Cedeno) would be counting the days until October. While you can play yourself out of the postseason now, you can't play yourself in.
Two, St. Louis was picked by some to be the worst team in the NL, and no one claimed they would be the favorites. So far, I'd say they've held up nicely.
Pirates 7, Cardinals 4
Chicago a 7-6 win over the Colorado Rockies for their sixth straight win.

RE: Angering one Albert Pujols
------------------------------------------------------------
It probably isn't a good idea to anger one Albert Pujols. As the most feared hitter in all of baseball the last thing you want to do anger one Albert Pujols and give him even more of a reason to kill you. Remember in 2006 when the Astros where practicaly popping champange in the dougout in the 9th inning of NLCS game 5 with, unitl that time, unhittable Brad Lidge on the mound? We all remember what happened then. Based on irrefutable empirical evidence, don't anger one Albert Pujols.

Pujols is a narcissistic chump. Molina is a complete wuss: in a quivering little voice "don't throw inside on me man. I'll come and get you." Jesus Christ, it was simply an inside pitch. What a queen.
What are the odds that these teams come to real blows before the season is over? I'd say they are about even right now.

Backe's a no-talent, high-strung pissant who thinks his opinion carries more weight than it does. He thought Molina tried to work him (he wasn't) and sent a message (in a stupid location).
Where's Berkman or Ausmus or Cooper in all of this? Biggio or Bagwell or Garner would have set Backe straight after he yelled at Pujols a couple weeks ago.
Given the game results related to these incidents, you'd think someone in Houston would tell Backe to shut up.
(And while Pujols might be in love with himself, I think the term chump doesn't hold up when you view his numbers.)

I have no idea what the business between BB and Pujols was about weeks ago. I do remember Pujols apologizing though. I also don't know what the business between BB and molina was about. I just know that it was simply an inside pitch and Molina starts to squeeling. Anyways, it's about time someone on the Astros showed some fire. If that means that BB needs to standup to, or tussle with Pujols, it sounds good to me.
The Orioles are doing pretty **** good. So far. Been following Scott and Albers progress this year, and even though I can do without Luke, I always really liked Albers and hope the Os keep it up.

Here's the deal. If your season averages for 6 years are .333 with 100+ RBI and 40+ HR you can talk all the junk you want, you can be in love with yourself because you are that good. He's the best, most consitant hitter in the game today ... period. Challenging or angering him is stupid ... just ask the washington wizards ... giving a great player who always seems ro rise to the occasion a reason to be bent is a bad idea. For the Cards sake I say keep it coming.
As for Molina, he knew they where trying to throw at him, they just missed. It wasn't the pitch it was the intent. Just becuase your pitcher couldn't hit his mark and actually dot him doesn't mean that wasn't what he was trying to do. And seriously you tried to hit Molina? Come on ... be a man and go after one of the power guys like Pujols, Duncan, or Glaus of Ankiel. I know molina is the leader but anyone who knows baseball (and its ovious the stros don't) knows you hit the best player on the other team for retaliation ... not a mediocre hitting catcher.

Apr 30 2008, 02:45 PM
Pujols went in hard on Towles, after some Astro went in hard on Molina the night before (or in the same game). Both were unnecessary and Pujols did call Towles to apologize (or probably more correctly, to explain why he did it -- retaliation). Backe went ahead and called out Pujols during BP the next day. causing a loud argument and a scrum.
Molina called timeout, and the ump granted it late. Backe thought Molina did it intentionally (using typical Backe logic) and then zipped the next one high and inside. Not sure how much the mess the night before (with LaRue getting plunked and then Ausmus getting a pitch thrown behind him) factored in.
It's definitely showing fire, but it also has given the Cards more fire in these games, especially for Pujols. Making the other team's superstar focus more against you isn't exactly a good thing.

Actually, i just called him a narcissistic chump; I know how good he is, and I am not even sure what you are talking about regarding a mad Pujols. Was he mad last weekend? Did he have some great series? I don't remember anything out of the ordinary; he always hits the Astros well.

I agree, they should have hit Berkman or Tejada. One other note. Notice Wainwright's pitch was low, waist or below. BB's high and inside. You should alway error low on the bean ball.

If I recall correctly he was a pretty good hitter at Tulane before being drafted.
Couple of years ago when he came through the Cal League that was the buzz amongst the press corps. In the launching pad that was Lancaster why didn't they let him hit? Some thought him as the best power prospect in the league, although it looks like the Dbacks made the right call in putting him on the mound.
Don't be surprised to see him pitch hit again.
The Dbacks are for real, and may be for some years to come. They did the rebuilding thing right, are stacked now with young talent (that has gained some confidence about belonging, unlike the Dodgers youngsters), and probably have the best starting staff (with or without Randy) in the NL. Scherzer could be a monster, Webb and Haren already are.
West is theirs for the taking. Colorado has too many holes, no one else is close save an extended lucky run.
And, though it pains me to say it, Owings could probably bat cleanup for either the Friars (or the Giants).

Last (overkill) take on the Owings phenomenon. Tonight, whilst we (Inland Empire 66ers) were nursing through a blowout at the active arms and bats of the San Jose Giants our voice came up with this nugget: name the two players in baseball history with at least 5 career home runs and a slugging % of .650 or better. I got the first one, Babe Ruth, and guessed Drysdale for the second. The correct second was ... Micah Owings. For now.

Baseball season's underway
Well you better get ready for a brand new day.
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
They're singing ...
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
They got the power, they got the speed
To be the best in the National League
Well this is the year and Cubs are real
So come on down to Wrigley Field
We're singing now ...
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
Baseball time is here again
You can catch it all on WGN
So stamp you feet and clap your hands
Chicago Cubs got the greatest fans.
You're singing now ...
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.

Go CUBS GO! Go CUBS GO!
I can understand why you don't like it because they sing it after every Cubs win, which happens A LOT at home. I spoke to the beat writer for the Cubbies Carrie Muskat and she said the boys were out a little too late at least three times on the road. They know that the division is like double A teams compared to them, that they have been partying on the roadies when they can get away from their ole ball and chains back home.

MAD MAD MAD ! ! !
Although in my trip to Tulsa for the NT, it was the same week as my High School notched it's 9th Oklahoma State Championship. It was a little unfair. Sperry has 2 brothers (1 Senior & 1 Freshman) bringing 90+ mph heaters. Plus the Freshman brother is supposed to have the nastiest curve ball ever seen in Sperry which would be pretty amazing considering the arms we had in the years I was there. If Coach Fisher teaches him the same circle change that he taught us, and saved his 8 year MLB career, he could be another Santana or Hamels.

I've got Cub friends who feel the same way.
Personally, I don't like it either. But as long as it blocks the development of Shawon Dunston II (aka Felix Pie - "He just needs a few more years to develop."), it's all good.
Plus there is always the chance Zambrano might just run out to CF to fight him during a game. Has there ever been a bench-clearing brawl involving just one team?
And Kevin, if you do fight him, be warned, he swings a mighty deadly purse. :)
Has San Diego fixed the hole in the warehouse wall that Pujols put into it? Or can nobody reach it?

Just saw that highlight string. I fear what would have happened had that ball not been low and away and/or he would have gotten all of the ball.
As for the slide, I'd thought it might have been a collision, not just a regular slide. Nothing untoward, just Bard getting his foot down late.
billmh
May 22 2008, 04:47 PM
I read that Albert admitted to being messed up the rest of the night out of fear of what might have happened if... Fortunately Young's injury (all told) isn't nearly as bad as it could have been.
Play at the plate was clean. I'm suprised more catchers who slide their leg out late to block don't get injured.
ANHYZER
May 23 2008, 11:59 AM
If that pitch was a fastball down the middle instead of a slider away, Young's career/life might have been over. Pujols is a class act, you could see the sincerity on his face. Did you see him and Gonzalez praying for Young? The play at the plate was a great play by both players. Padre catchers of the past wouldn't have even tried to block the plate, but Bard is a tough guy. Pujols could have lowered his shoulder and blown him up, but again, he is a classy player and knew hew would be safe with a slide...11 weeks until football.

D Lee played in 150 (and started 146) games last year. He batted .317 with 180 hits. D Lee had 7 errors with a .994 fielding %. His wrist injury wasn't a factor. Leave it to Cub fan to make an excuse like his wrist was hurt.
Just face it ... Pujols has turned himself into one of the best defensive players at his position in the game. That coupled with the fact that he is one of the 2 best offensive players in the game and is one of the best base runners in the game who is consumed with scoring runs (the most overlooked of his abilities especially since he is a big guy) makes Albert the best player in baseball.
JerryChesterson

History repeated for the 5th time in SoCal tonight as the Angels lose a no-no. This may be the nadir for the vaunted Angels offense...

.500 at 40-40!! Today is the midway point for the Olde English D and we're looking at a chance at holding a 41-40 record. Who would have thought that possible a mere three weeks ago when they dropped their 4th in a row to Cleveland and fell to 12 games under .500...
LETS. GO. TIGERS!

No worries....Little beat up right now and on the road, THANK GOD we get to play the Redbirds this week. That will help ease our pain.
:o
BACK ON THE WINNING TRAIN FOR SURE!!!!
The Redbird Smoke and Mirrors won't work on us. It is tough trying to figure out how the redbirds actually win a game with that crappy of a team. :o

The CUBS beating the redbirds is like.....
taking candy from a baby.....
beating up a 100 year old woman.....
robbing a homeless guy in a wheelchair.....
scoring with the girl that had 40 shots of tequila....
beating the Atlanta WNBA team....
finding some cheap labor at a Home Depot in Tejas....
yeah it's that EASY!

All you Cardinal fans need to send a THANK YOU card to umpire Lance Barksdale he saved you guys from getting SWEPT!!!
He is the worst umpire in the NL and he has a grudge against the CUBS...Wood made Molina look stupid on a curve ball which he obviously swung....but that idiot had his head up his [censored] and wasn't paying attention. This is about the seventh time he has screw us in the past 3 years....If I see him I am going to fight him!!!
VVVVVV WORST UMPIRE EVER!!!! VVVVVVV

Memo to Mr Troy Glaus
You know that little white thing that the guy standing on the dirt mound in the middle of the field is throwing towards you? Your supposed to hit it.
Nice 0 for the season against the CUBBIES this year :D Maybe someone can get you an application at Kroger, they always need new baggers. :o

And you didn't see the game before when the ump (not sure who) called Gluas out on 2 strikes (in the 9th) that where obviouisly both low and outside. Even the announcers who never get on the umps where like, "those where bad calls". It goes both ways. See me when you actually win something besides a meaningless middle of summer game.

Both of y'all need to worry about the brew crew. I still think their skipper will screw it up, but they got a good team on paper.

Why becuase they got a big fat pitcher? CC & sheets will rpboably get hurt in 3 weeks.

I am not at all concerned with ole Cotton Candy Sabathia...The CUBS has seen him before...he lasted 3 innings....He will be on the DL with an abdominal strain after a midnight run to the China Buffet in Milwaukee :D
Just wait and see who the CUBBIES get ;) They have been talking to the greatest hitter to come out of Oklahoma since Mickey Mantle! hint hint...he was the one who got robbed of the NL MVP last year. I just hope Fukudome don't mind playing CF

Is he going to be a free agent at the end of the year, or or the Rockies just giving up their future? Or, are they pulling a Memphis like Gasol trade?
btw. Sabathia is **** good, with only short stints on the DL. The Brewers will definitely pass the Cards, and make the Cubbies recall their heritage in September and October.

Holliday is a free agent next year (and he is going to make 15 million). It looks like we will have to give up our awesome lefty Sean Marshall, Matt Murton, and 2 Players to be named later + cash but it is well worth it....I wish they would just trade Fonzy straight up, but the Rockies are trying to eliminate payroll.

OH SNAP!!!! This just in, CUBS have just made an offer to the A's for Rich Harden....deal could come across the wire as soon as Wed.
That won't suck to bad! :D
If the Harden deal falls through it looks like we will have to settle for AJ Burnett ;)
The CUBS are dealing!!! Whoo Hooo!!!

I think a better offer would be needed. Just look what the Brewers gave up: LaPorta and a couple of lower level guys who look good. LaPorta may not pan out, but he is at least viewed as potentially solid major leaguer. Marshall and Murton are marginal guys, they kind of look like AAAA players.

Harden is the most wondrous fragile talent in the game since... Mark Prior. Oops...
ChrisWoj
Jul 08 2008, 01:04 AM
I agree, Harden will have you seeing ghosts of Prior when he pulls or tears some random muscle in the middle of his second start as a Cub.
Barring that, if you pull off AJ Burnett I'm just going to laugh at you. He's a catch-22... either you trade a bunch of prospects for him and he bolts after a great half of a season, or you trade a bunch of prospects for him and he plays horrible and uses his player option to make you regret it for years to come.

We are just looking for that solid #4..... I'm cool going to battle with Zambrano, Lilly, Dempster in a short series
ChrisWoj
Jul 08 2008, 02:29 PM
Milwaukee would be, on the other hand, going to battle with Sheets, Sabathia, Gallardo... much better set of three. However I will state that I do prefer Chicago's bullpen which is head and shoulders above Milwaukee's.

Rich Harden traded to Cubs along with Chad Gaudin for four prospects. Best of luck to your boys McCoy but keep in mind this: over the past three years Harden has twice as many pre-all star break starts as he does post-all star break starts. If he stays healthy the rest of the year I will be outright shocked.
But hey, Chad Gaudin has been surprising. I wouldn't be shocked if he, over the haul, has a bigger impact than Hardin for the Cubbies.
And now to go celebrate Miguel Cabrera remembering tonight that he's Miguel Cabrera! 4-4, 2HR!
SIDE NOTE: Doesn't it suck that the guy that hits the most HRs per at bat in the bigs with over 150ABs can't get into the HR Derby? Marcus Thames, 17HR in 160+ AB, less than 10AB per homer. You have to go all the way down to Jason Werth and his 12HR in 198AB to get a guy on the leaderboard with under 200AB, and he has 5 fewer homers in 30 more ABs!

If you aren't good enough to play every day, you aren't good enough to be in the HR derby. Nobody wants to see no name Thames out there, people want Corey Hart
