Its almost time for the 5th anniversary of the Shootout!!! Are you going to get left out?!?

Hope not :D

This years edition is gonna top them all, if you can imagine that. Once again, the Discrazy Shootout will feature 2 of the best courses in TEXAS (thats right....the whole state) on the same property. The Discrazy Shootout started out small, but has quickly grown and is now THE event in West Texas. Last year the CHAMP course made its debut and was given high praise, even being favorably compared to the famed Winthrop Gold Course where the United States Disc Golf Championship is held each year. Jay Reading, long time touring Pro and disc golf promoter, had the 2008 Discrazy Shootout on his Top 10 events list for 2008. (FDM #5) How big a promotion is THAT?! :D

Expect all the same amenities: free food, free drinks (alchoholic or otherwise), phat players packs, big added cash, awesome raffles..... you name it, the Discrazy Shootout has GOT it!!

Online sign-ups are coming soon. For all the latest details and information about the 2009 Discrazy Shootout, contact Matt Smart at 806-336-0553 AND go to www.discrazy.net (http://www.discrazy.net) for all information related to the 2009 Discrazy Shootout.

Sign up now....or risk missing out!!!!!

I'll post the flyer in the shop today.....

Hope so.....2 very fun courses and a great atmosphere! Every year theres more and more who make the trek for the first time and they dont regret it!

I got maps of the 2 courses up on discrazy.net. The CHAMP course layout was for last year, but will be mostly the same. I will post the changes when I get them, but it gives you an idea of the how it flows.

There could be several BIG names in the sport show up...very fun to watch the Final 9 with those guys.

Just got listed on the PDGA.com Tour page yesterday....expect entries to start rolling in. I hear from Matt that there may be as many as 60 who have already made commitments...

Can you say "I better sign up soon or risk missing out"!? :D

Hey Jerry, what's the cap on players?

Jroc
Mar 11 2009, 06:18 PM
I'll have to verify it with Matt, but I *think* its 90 Pros, 90 Am's (including advanced divisions). Last year, there were 90 total AM players, but the Adv divisions played with the Pros. This year, many more Pros are expected, so Adv. will probably play with the rest of the AM's. In other words (if it is 90 Pro and 90 Am), Am's filled last year....expect that again this year....and sooner than last year.

Matt will be at the Crush this weekend, so we can get more info then.

New players list up....76 total now with 28 in Open. Entries are steadily rolling in now with over 2 weeks left. Remember that regitration WILL NOT be taken Saturday morning...and likely end before that based on how fast spots are filling. Even more reason not to wait. Dont get left out!!

Matt may not know Nick's not coming yet...I'll check with him and see.

Also, Thompson park not only holds these 2 disc golf courses, but there is a zoo and an amusment park on the property as well. Good entertainment for kids, wives, girlfriends, etc. Plus, Palo Duro Canyon is just south of town and is a must-see if you are in the area.

Did I mention that there is about $3,000 worth of merchandise in the raffle? Or that DisCrazy is a sponser for E.D.G.E? And all meals are provided on site? Plus plenty of adult beverages for everyone all weekend....free? I dont know why its not full already!! :D

Apr 16 2009, 03:43 PM
I have a couple of questions for anyone who can help. I signed up early online in the intermediate division. On the flyer, and also on the entry sheet that is printable, it says "$10 off for current PDGA members (excluding Juniors)". I am a member and checked the box, but it still charged me 55. Also on the printable registration sheet, and on the flyer, it mentions that the ace pot is included in the entry, but on Titledisc I had to pay 3 for it. I wonder if this is a mistake on the td's part or Titledisc. It seems like if the non-member fee were not included, it would say something like "add 10 for.." All in all I wound up paying 58$ plus online fee for entry. Does that sound right??

Jroc
Apr 16 2009, 04:48 PM
I replied on the CVDGA boards but will repeat part of it here.

The fees on the flyers are correct. Ace pot is included for all and you get a $10 discount if you are a current member (excluding Jrs.) I did notice the ace pot and non member fee on titledisc. I would direct your questions to Matt Smart (806-336-0553)....he can get it straightened out with Titledisc. I'll mention it to Matt as well.

I know that all Pros will play the CHAMP course rd 1 and rd 3....and Disc Creek course Rd. 2. Int and below will play the opposite course each round. Not sure where we're going to put the Advanced players yet, but I think Matt said he will decide this weekend. Also, everyone will play from the same tees on the Disc Creek course, not sure about the CHAMP course though.

MattSmart
Apr 16 2009, 05:07 PM
Yes that is a mistake on my part with Titledisc. I will get that straightened out. If we cant get the difference refunded to the players that have signed up i will have a list at the tournament and will get you taken care of then!

Week of, and I can't wait to get up and give Amarillo a try!!! This is going to be a fun trip!
What can we expect from the courses? Long, tight, wooded, open, water, all the above?

Jroc
Apr 27 2009, 01:35 PM
On the disc creek course, you can expect a lot more elevation than you probably think. There is a creek that comes into play on 6 of the holes...plus road OB that comes into play on most of the holes. Most holes are fairly open, but lots of big oak trees, pine trees, and other trees of all different shapes and sizes. A well designed course, fun and challenging. Par 58 from the White (concrete) tees....Par 59 from the Blue tees

The CHAMP course will bring more strategy into play. Theres OB water and/or street to deal with on just about every hole. Its a long course, but you cant just go up to the tees and huck it as hard as you can...you have to plan your shots. Kind of like in pool, you need to think 2-3 shots ahead to do well. Lots of risk/reward shots on that course. There will be some holes that are pretty wooded, but most shots are open...you just have to land in certain spots to give yourself opportunites...otherwise, your score can go up in a hurry. Expect to throw just about every shot in your bag too. Par 62 form the Blue tees....Par 69 from the Gold tees.

warlocks00
Apr 27 2009, 02:41 PM
For those of us prone to errant water shots, are discs retrievable from this water?

That was my next question...can you get them with a golden retriever?

Jroc
Apr 27 2009, 02:59 PM
They are retrievable from the creek on the disc creek course unless it rains within a few days of the event. The creek would be flowing and the bottom stirred up, making it harder to see. But its calm most of the time and the water is pretty clear.

On the CHAMP course, the north lake is the biggest and deepest. If a disc is within a few feet of the edge, you can probably get it. Past that, it drops off pretty fast. The middle lake is smaller and more shallow and you can see discs pretty far out. The south lake only comes into play on 2 holes, some spots you can see your disc, some you cant.

Theres not very much bursh in any of the water, so a golden retriever should work if you can see the disc. If you cant, the Amarillo guys are real good about getting your disc back, even if you live out of town.

johnrock
Apr 27 2009, 03:01 PM
Depends on how long the string is! :D

On the Disc Creek course, the creek is usually not a fatal problem. There are some shallows where retrieval is easy, but in the deeps it gets more difficult.

Visibility varies due to water depth and recent rainfall. Here on the Plains, rainwater is collected in playa lakes. For the playa lakes located within city limits, the excess water gets pumped out to allow for surprise rainfall that would otherwise flood low parts of the city. Several of those playa lakes get pumped to the creek at the course. So after a big rain like we had last week, the water in our creek runs very murky and discs that wind up in the deeps are difficult to spot.

On the big course, you will encounter several types of water, all easily avoided. The main creek will come into play. The South Lake, the Fish Pond, The Middle Lake, and the North Lake will also be a part of the experience. Retrieval from these hazards depends on how far from the shore you are in the lakes, or how deep and murky the creek water is.

....I know a good screen printer for next year :D

Hah, there's no next year for me. It's a great course but that was the worst tournament I've ever attended. We could talk all day about the advertised "Big Player Packages", long drive contest for each division, and putting challenge (unless that was the mini putting contest) that never materialized. But I'm more concerned about the lack of organization on the TD's part. We were called in three different times, starting at 8:30, for the players meeting that didn't take place till after 10. During the players meeting, OBs and course rules were never discussed - leading to each card to decide whether obstacles were casual, playable, or OB! Then, there were no markings on the Championship course for the Am or Junior boxes, so they had to walk to the Pro boxes to make sure they were on the right hole - at least two cards missed one! Of course all these things could have been smoothed over, but the TD was too busy playing!

I'll give Matt credit for bringing in all his sponsors. There was a TON of merchandise in the raffle, Chick-fil-a provided lunches, and there was plenty of Budweiser. I'd just like to point out: I don't go to a PDGA sanctioned event for beer and raffles.

I'll think about this event in 2011 - after they have a year to prove they can fix these problems.

Now that that's out of the way, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that Jerry, and especially his wife Misti, did a fantastic job of keeping things organized at the scorers table. They handled far too many complaints and did not get near enough credit. So - Thanks to you both!

MattSmart
May 06 2009, 01:22 AM
I have a question? How much experience do you have in putting together and running a Pdga sanctioned event? How much time and effort have you put into a B tier event? How many times have you have to deal with the stress of something going wrong the morning of the tournament? If i could go back i would not have played. Bad decision on my part. First time for that.
Players package?
Dinner friday night and beverages by DisCrazy
Lunch Saturday by Chick Fil A
Dinner and beverages Saturday night by Discrazy and Bud
2 koozies
bottle opener
Bud pen
Free coupon for Chick fil A
Total $35 atleast! The only thing missing was the shirts! Which i have now.
Very little response in the long drive. The putting challenge was the mini at the players party. FREE!
There were plenty of baskets located prior to the tournament. Some didnt show. That put us behind. That i apologize for. At the time of the players meeting all i could think about was getting the players on the course. I take responsibility for not having the rule sheet printed off. And going over everything. As far as the Am tees being marked they were clearly marked. You pass the pro tee and sign walking to every hole. Obs and hole routes were clearly marked on every hole! Both course maps on every scorecard! No reason for a hole to be skipped!!!!!
I dont get paid to do this! The DisCrazy Shootout has been a great tournament every year cause of all the hard work and FREE TIME that goes into it. I started this cause i have a true passion for the sport and wanted to bring more to Amarillo and West Texas. Some things were a little rocky this year. Some things my fault some not. I apologize for that!
As for the players that did not show up i cant make them come. I talked to every player that was registered and took them off if they called back and said they were not coming! Next time it will be paid only before registered!!!
I aplologize to all my sponsors! Jerry and Misti thank you for everything you have done for the Shootout. You deserve alot of recognition. As for next year dont judge this year only. Just because things were not perfect this year like the previous 4 years does not mean this tournament will not continue to be great!
Thanks to everyone that showed up. All in all it was a good time. Congrats to Santos on his second win of the year!!
$1200 collected for charity

Don't think all that was directed at me, but I will say: I have put a ton of time into our C tier the past 2 years, and our B tier this year. Plus all the other events we(the CVDGA)run here in San Angelo throughout the year(Heardimore, W.T. Doubles, Ash Minis{we are putting on a 54 hole one this weekend}, Ice Bowl, Ace Race). Most all of which use temporary baskets that we make sure are accounted for at least by Friday if not sooner by collecting them up and tieing them all down to trailor. So they can't "not show" Saturday.

Thanks for the answer on the player packs. As for all the free beer, by the time I got done with my round Saturday and got to the cooler...I got 1 bud lime, and the rest was gone(other than those mint things). I did get lunch Saturday and a koozie and bottle opener though...

On a positive, I did enjoy playing the courses.

Well I'm very glad to hear that the courses for this event did not come up short on quality (except the 2 new holes on the big course did not seem like a very good trade-off). It is very rewarding to hear players give high praise on my course designs, despite the challenges of the rest of the weekend. Hole #8 on the big course proved once again that it can cause even a seasoned PRO to have a minor melt-down, nearly provoking a DQ for poor sportsmanship. 2 years in a row that short little hole has created major controversy.

As far as the event overall, well...
Looks like I picked a bad time to step back and let the others show their commitment.

This event was NOT a representation of the way things are done here as far as events go. People in this area have put on QUALITY Disc Golf events for several years, and to have to apologize over and over to out-of-towners because some of the most basic items had been overlooked is very disappointing. Jerry and Misti Kingston deserve MVP awards for the amount of effort they put in, and the grief they surely endured. Hopefully we can continue some sort of working partnership for future events (TOTO is coming up in August...).

I don't know how much time was invested in volunteer meetings (I assume there were some kind of prior meetings because there were some things accomplished that had to be organized beforehand), but I do know I never saw or heard about any meetings for those interested in helping with the event. After much discussion with my wife, I decided that my participation with this event would be limited due to the way problems have been handled in the recent past.

Hopefully lessons have been learned and DG will continue to flourish and grow in this area.

What happened to Sunday's lunch?

We waited and waited then finally had to send someone out for something....

Hey Johnrock does anyone ever get a disc back form over the bomb squad fence? Threw a ESP Venom over in there(I know what a dummy) that I would really love to get back.
(also lost a blue ace race disc and a blue Z-avenger on 16, all had my name on them).

If they turn up, I'd gladly pay the cost to mail them down, unless you are coming this way for some reason, maybe Abilene?(I won't be there, but you could give them to Carl or Nick) If not, my fault for throwing them in.

Usually someone from the APD Bomb Squad will gather up the discs in their yard and take them across the street to the Parks & Rec. Dept. Maintenance building. At first they said they would do it every week (on Fridays), but sometimes it takes them a little longer. I'll go check today and see what's there.

I've been checking the creek every day this week, but it's up and murky. Maybe soon it'll clear up and we'll get some lost soldiers out. If it's got a name (and/or number), chances are good you'll get it back one way or another.

I really do wish I could have made it this year and I'm wory to hear that there were difficulties. That said, I have to say a few things in defense of Matt and DisCrazy. My wife and I run 8 or so events per year and help with several others. I know firsthand what it takes to run a good event and how hard it can be on the TD. I also know how hard it is to raise good sponsorship - for example, our last B-tier only raised a few small non-monetary sponsorships, so we footed the added cash bill ourselves. It takes a ton of time and legwork to get that sort of thing done, and for Matt and crew to come up big with BUDWEISER and CHICK-Fil-A as major sponsors like that is a really big deal. $1100 raised for charity? Color me impressed. I've run a couple of charity events and even half that amount is hard to achieve.

I agree that it can be frustrating to have unmarked teeboxes - we ran into that last year and it did make us hunt a little bit for a few tees... Also, having a rules sheet for everyone to carry with them is an improvement that would make a pretty significant difference. As for the side games, one cannot force people to participate. If there wasn't a big interest in the long-drive competition, then it is what it is. At least they took the time and put in the effort to offer it. You can lead disc golfers to water, but you can't make them drink.

Running tournaments is a learning process. I'm sure Matt has noted each issue that arose this year and will do everything he can to make sure they don't happen next year. He's doing good things for the sport, to be sure. The courses are great and I'm sure the golf was fun. I think that instead of finding flaws and getting upset, our sport would be better served by players offering to help out with something next year. Like it or not, this is a player-supported sport and a great event takes people willing to pitch in a little bit, even if it's 5 minutes to help carry a cooler or put out a teesign. Those who have spent time on the other side of the TD table will understand what I mean. I'm eternally grateful to those who lend a helping hand at my events and I know how much it means to other TDs as well.

Matt, keep doing what you're doing. Hopefully someone enjoyed the merch we sent over. TitleDISC is in for sponsorship again next year :)

Actually as upset with things as Mikey was, he did stop and take the time to help out Misti at the scorer's table. So IMO, he more than anyone has the room to "find flaws" as he did help more than most.

No recoveries from the Bomb Squad area, but the creek started to clear some yesterday. I pulled out a bunch (even some quality No-Namers:cool:), but it may take a while to clear by Hole #16.

Josh, you make it sound like there was no help. I saw lots of folks doing stuff the morning of and days before the event. You should take the time to interview all involved and try to discover what the real issues are before you start giving your sage advice and try to make it sound like you know what's up. Dig a little deeper and maybe you'll find out where the real problem is.

I don't claim to have been there so I certainly don't know the details. I also wasn't picking on anyone in particular. I was just trying to point out that there is a ton of work that goes into putting on a tournament, and many people don't realize it. I'm not saying that you or anyone else posting on this thread isn't aware of those facts, but lots of people read this and it was starting to get pretty negative. John, I'm sure you'll agree that it's better for our sport to learn from mistakes than to make them the focus of post-tournament disucssions, especially in a venue as public as this one. Do I do everything right every time? Most definitely not. I just do the best I can to make sure everyone has fun and that things run smoothly. and when I do screw up, I try to be sure that I don't lket it happen again. Matt is a stand-up guy and I know he'll do the same.

This was the first time I attended this tournament..I liked it ..I do plan on being there next year...There were some flaws..I was questioning to myself before I left about the player packages..but then I thought about the hotel that fed me free breakfast each morning, Lunch that got provided and dinner that nite..Lot of tournaments can barely get 1 lunch provided and there was the players party..I skipped out on the party because as I exited the highway I had to drive by an Outback restaurant to get to the hotel...Only thing I really thought about that nite was that wonderful steak I enjoyed...OB rules, being that I have played a few years water is usually OB and so is the street unless your playing with a casual...I understood also the lines around the baskets does not make it an island hole but the putting circle to know when to use my earth moving jump putt..I figured out the lines where OB, which the courses was very self explanatory...I figured out the 3 boxes for pros, ams and juniors(didnt take much common sense)...If I went to tournaments for the players packages, then why would I play B or C tiers at all...Go play the course there's your challenge..When you play it well you get your reward...Running tournaments are hard work and a lot of planning...Then going out and getting sponsorships and items for that awesome raffle....That takes alot of months ahead of time to start on and a good reputation with your sponsors...Like to say thanks for all the hard work they put into this tournament..Marking all those lines that was a chore too! As I did it for our tournament here in Wichita Falls...Everyone learns from each tournament and volunteers are few and hard to find...

MY FIRST WIN IN ADVANCED MASTERS!!!!!!!!!

Now that I've had a bit of time to cool off I thought I should come back and apologize for the tone in my previous post. While I was (and still am) disappointed in the tournament, I should have handled the situation with much more tact than I did. I realize Matt and his team worked very hard trying to have everything organized and it was inappropriate to attack him directly without knowing what problems he might have encountered at the last minute. So, Matt - I'm sorry.

I sincerely hope that the hardships you endured this year will make next years event that much better. I believe the Discrazy Shootout could be the best tournament in West Texas... maybe that's why I was so disappointed.

Matt,

Thanks for all you do for DG in W TX! All our guys had a blast and several finished well too. Best we can tell there were 15 Lubbock Windriders playing and at least 5 spectators. We'll bring more next year.

Too bad about the gliches; there always are some. No big; the food and fun more than made up for them. I know this will only make next year better than ever.

Lookin' forward to continued collaboration, cooporation, and competition.
