I checked with the Park Friends at Mohawk and they will begin charging for parking on April 1st, so that will not be an issue.

I wanted to change things this year and use Hunter and Haikey. Since Haikey is still offline that just wouldn't work.

I thought about using Chandler with the new course, but Scott isn't sure it will be ready in time.

Joe pointed out that this is really the only club event at the Hawks until possibly the Oklahoma Open so that is our plan.

Sign-ups will be available Friday the 13th before Late Night with Dave Nicholson and Satruday morning from 8:00 to 9:00 am.

We have ordered disc for the Am players packs. The first 45 teams will receive a tournament stamp, after that it will be a players pack of equal value.

This is being ran again to support the TDSA so please come out and show your support. Prices are the same as last year with no increases.

Since this is non-sanctioned there will not be an additional $10.00 for non PDGA members.

This will be fun, doubles are great, so we will see you there.

Contact me with any questions...

To me these prices seem awfully steep for a non sanctioned event? We are always saying how we would like to get more people to play tournaments, but if the price is too high the casuals just keep playing casual. If we want to get more people to play tournaments in this sport we all love, we need to keep the cost of playing down. Especially in this troubled economy.(My two cent's)

btw, Last year there was not even trophies given out  I personally would rather have a small trophy than a stack of plastic.

If I were playing Am, I would always rather have a nice trophy or plaque than a stack of plastic. The plastic will be lost, traded or sold but the trophy is something you will always have. As for the entry fees, hard to say what is too much, the attendance can be one measuring factor but not the only one for attendence. With more and more tournaments and only 52 weekends in a year, this effects attendence also. I know the economy is effecteing everyone, even me. With all of the events available and the unstable economy, I think all events will suffer on their numbers, those with higher entries will suffer even more. With the exception of a few majors and long standing events. Its come down to club vs club for tournament dates and players.
Who can offer the most value to the player. The club or event that can give the player a sense of value for their hard earned dollars will survive, the others will fade away.

I wonder if it would be possible for the club to hold a tournament for it's members only, no entry fees but still with trophies and prizes. This may even spur some new memberships and reward those that have been continuing sponsors of the club. Would it be a money loser for the club? Hard to tell but even if it lost $500 it would show the club membership some type of thanks or reward, other than schedules and minis.

I understand your concerns James. Both of my sons are now playing tournaments so when I look at the entry fees times 3, it adds up.

The difference in sanctioned and non-sanctioned is only the points you would receive. Doubles are not rated due to obvious problems.

By running this non-sanctioned I thought we would pick up more non-PDGA members, no $10.00 fee.

Also, we won't have to deduct the fee per player. All of this adds up to bigger payouts.

We could consider a trophy only option. To my knowledge we haven't offered that in this area in recent history.

Honestly, with running the 3 City Champ tournaments, now running GCD and getting ready for our A Tier in Pawhuska and then the NT, I pretty much decided to inflation proof the event and keep the prices the same.

With that said, this one is set but it is YOUR club. The members need to dictate how we price, how we pay out and some people really need to step up and run some of these club events..

That is the best way to have input...

Here are prices from the non-sanctioned Okie Doubles Wayne and Click run,

Pro's usually want to play for more $$ and the am prices are mixed, some are higher and some are lower.

Mike, If you look you will see that I do not play many tournaments anymore. Alot of the reason is the cost of the tournaments. I really think that by charging so much we will not see the casuals ever step up to play in these events, Plus we loose many of the experienced players. If the prices are low enough you will have to turn away players, on the other hand if the prices are to high, you will not get enough players.

I have not done the research, but I would guess that the numbers are down as compared to say 5 years ago. I do know that the division I typically play in there used to always be a dozen or more players in most of the tournaments. Now there is usually less than half that number.

I just looked up a couple of tournaments in this region to compare prices,
Duncan Hillclimer C tier advanced $45.00.
Kan-U-WyCo C tier $35.00
College Station Open C tier advanced $ 27.00
Jefferson Barricks Open C tier advanced $35.00

I am sure I could find many more examples, but that should be enough to make you wonder if we are overcharging around here

As for running tournaments, I know how much you guys give of yourselves to run these things. I really want to THANK YOU for stepping up to run them. BUT it is not something I want to do. I would end up going postal on some very deserving person :o

I understand what your sayingJames.

Keep in mind our prices are per team so it will cost each player 1/2.

I thought keeping the prices the same as last year was a good thing. Non sanctioned will save a bunch of people $10.00 and we will be paying the players the normal per player fee instead of the PDGA..

Input is always appreciated..

pretty bad when a non sanctioned tourny cost more than a B tier half is 50.00 plus 5.00 for acepot per person total per team 110.00 split that still higher than than a sanctioned one olso ther will probably bee no trophy again this year it is not allways about the payout trophys mean alot and last longer. This will make alot of people happy because I will not play any more tulsa club events because prices are out of control. Pretty bad when the president of the PDGA can run A B tier for 35.00 and still give away 2 disc to everyone including pros how is this possible??? Trophys have gone away I know they cost but even the ones dan made would be ok but this year is all about the pros may next year the ams can support the ams not the pros may I might be wrong but this is how I feel about it .you cant get more casuals with higher prices you are probably going to loose some long time players !!!!!

twoputtok
Mar 04 2009, 12:16 PM
Richard, while your conerns are valid, I think you are not looking at the bigger picture. First, everyone can not be pleased. Second, what Joe was referring to was not necessarily putting in new courses but that by going the way we have, we have increased the total number of players around town. Granted a lot, if not most, will never play a sanctioned event but they play and they tell their friends. Some of these golfers do convert over to competitive play, we have new ones coming in all the time. The best example of this was the County's Untied Way Charity event. I have never sees so many new faces and some of those keep coming back.

I think Tulsa should offer a trophy only event, with much less entry fees. This is the only true way to see what the Am players really want. The numbers will tell the final story.

The other problem I see is that there are just so many events now, that a player must selectivly choose their events, unless he is independtly wealthy, or at least single. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif BY doing this the better events will survive and the others will just be memories.

Let me ask you a question Richard, is it just the cost or the cost vs value aspect of it. For instance, USDGC is somewhere around $270 for entry. If you were given a spot would that entry drive you away or would you consider that a reasonable price, considering what the event offers a player?

In the 5 or 6 years I have been playing, I have seen the TDSA grwo from a blip on the disc golf radar map to a club that is now nationaly recognized. From a club that couldn't harldy pay for their club picnic to a club that can now do major projects. I do however feel that before any new courses are considered that ameneties need to be added to our existing courses, such as benches, tee signs, trash cans, bag holders, ect..........

With the major growth the club has experienced, there will be some growing pains, as we are seeing now, with you and some other OLD TIMERS questioning entry fees. Again, this is a valid question that you , as a member haver EVERY right to ask. ;)

The only other thing I could say is that if you feel a tournament has an entry that you feel is too high or of no value, voice your opinion, as you have and don't play the event. If they were giving away an new basket for every division winner or a shot at $10,000 or a new car, I don't think you would question the price.

So is it Value or Price you are looking for? They are two very different things.

Remember the old saying, you get what you pay for. ;)
And if you don't feel it was worth it, then don't buy it again.

The point I was trying to make in my original post is that in order to grow the sport we need to get lots of new people involved, And in order to do that we need to keep the cost of tournaments down to attract new blood....

OK I am through...back to your regularly scheduled program :D

twoputtok
Mar 04 2009, 03:32 PM
James, I don't disagree with reduced fee tournaments to attract more AM players but I think some more thought may need to be put towards it. Since the costs of everything associated with a tournament have gone up. Are you saying the club should have a break even philosophy? Or should the club be allowed to make a profit for the benefit of the club? If so, how much profit is enough?

This problem is one that has gone on forever. Ams supporting pros will continue as long as AMs demand a payout. And it will continue as long as we the players are the only true sponsors of events and the PDGA continues to force added cash requirements for the pro divisions. It has to come from somewhere. Outside sponsorship is the answer for the Pro side but it hasn't happened and I don't see it happening with only a few dozen pros and no galleries at events. For the Am side, as soon as they stop demanding these huge plastic payouts, then maybe entries can be dropped. Even if the Ams are not supporting the pros, there is still a huge financial commitment from a TD to make sure he has merchandise on hand for payout.

I guess the only way to know for sure is to have an Am only, trophy only, low entry event and look at the numbers when it is over. You are right in stating where 95% of the money comes from, AMS! And in my opinion the Ams have gotten value from their support over the last 5-6 years.

Lets see, if they hadn't supported the club, there would be no 2006 Am Worlds, no new baskets or tees at Dovillio, no Red Hawk, No Black Hawk, no Pawhuska (they heard about from worlds), no Owasso, no Bristow....ect......

With the growth that we have had, it has created other benefits that haven't been considered, such as those I just mentioned.

It still comes down to the fact that as long as there is no out side sponsorship, Ams will conintue to support about every thing. But we have to be carefull, if the Ams choose to no longer support the system, then were are we then?

James do you know of any other Teats available? /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Actually if you compare four rounds of DG at TDSA weekend mini prices including pot & CTP vs GCD prices it breaks down like this.

GCD / TDSA Mini per player cost:

Pro: $70 vs $48 = +$22
Adv: $55 vs $32 = +$18
Am: $45 vs $32 = +$13
Rec: $30 vs $32 = -$2

So your newbies actually get a $2 discount, players pack, Ring of Fire, & the big tournament experience.

Since its non-sanctioned I wouldnt rule out the idea of $5 optional one per round mullies.

As far as a trophy only event, why would a newbie want to pay anything to compete against 30-40 other guys for 3 top trophies when you can garantee aleast three out of that group will bag down for the "ego" win?

I WANT MY STINKING PLAYERS PACK MAN!!!!!:D

twoputtok
Mar 04 2009, 05:14 PM
Not sure about that question? Why do Newbies now pay $25 + to compete in a tournament? Would there be more if it were only $15?

As for the bagging down, that is the exact reason we need a local ratings system for our mini events. This would prevent a current non-rated player fom bagging after about 3-4 rounds and would establish a rating for him. Or for the local minis go back and installl some type of bump rule. Win your division 2 times and you're moved up to the next division. This should take care of most of those that will never join the PDGA but will play every local mini there is.

Your course on the mountain is the worst course in town for bagging. You'd think the TD could do something about it. :o
But it seems he just continues to look the other way as to not jepordize his huge Am pool payout. :p

sschumacher
Mar 04 2009, 05:30 PM
I disagree because a lot of people that play Am in sanctioned events will play Pro at a Chandler mini because they have more confidence on a short course (example: Hinds ;)) and feel the playing field is more level.

That's why thank's to my political advisor, Chris Hicks and the TDSA, we voted to jack up the PRO fee to drive some of them back into the " Support Furdog's Booze Supply Fund " division. :)

It' pays to be politically connected buddy. ;)

I am a newbie, just mailed my TDSA dues in today, and I think that the biggest thing that kept me from playing in an event was intimidation. I went out to Hunter and watched a round of the City Championship and now I am not so intimidated to play in an event. Everyone was friendly and promoting the sport. I did not know their were recreation and novice divisions. So my point is you need to find a way to get us newbs out to an event. Once you can do that I think there will be more people like me that will come out and play.

Every dollar either goes back to the players the club or to the PDGA.

I am a AM that recently started playing in tournaments on a regular basis. I would like to say that I would MUCH rather be playing for plastic that I would be using on a regular basis rather than a chunk of wood... Not too mention getting a hot stamped disc from the tourney I just competed in would be a much cooler trophey on my wall. Though the metal keychain trophy's I have seen are very cool cause you can put them on your bag and hearing the clinking of multipe ones could send a strong message to your opponent. All this talk about lowering prices to attract more AM's doesn't seem logical too me because as I believe Wise said " you get what you pay for" and if I am working all week to attend a tourney would'nt I rather pick one that is going to give me my biggest bang for my buck? Finally dropping the price of a tourney from 25 to 15 does not seem to be the answer I could probably collect enough beer cans from the coarses around town to make up the difference...

I won 2nd place trophy in Rec at a Twisted event before. Thanks Joe! :)

As a TD thats really my gripe about having trophies and if you noticed the ones Marie and I give out for CS are nothing but a cheap $3 or $4 picture frame with some type of photo shopped tournament design which by the way LilMoose has to deal with hours and hours of my drunken butt telling her to change this or change that. She deserves an award of her own. We offer 1st place only for advanced and Am only but have 1st, 2nd. & 3rd for novice and all age groups in the male and female junior divisions because they probably appreciate it more. We print juniors 2nd & 3rd depending of what age and number of players at the tourney. For you advanced and Ams that want a trophy for 2nd or 3rd, just remember, only the top dog gets to wear the crown. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Richard. After watching you cash in the same division and collect big stacks of plastic over the years I can understand why you would want trophy only. You and Hutch have probably reinforced the foundations of your houses with the stuff and you really dont want to pay for anymore.

Personally I wouldnt pay $50 to play advanced because I know I have no chance at cashing and a $10 or $15 valued players pack is not going to encourage me to donate $40 or $35 in trophies or plastic to you bullies. To me $25, $30, or maybe even $40 for four rounds and a nice dated tournament disc that I throw or can hang on my wall feels better and is more than I can get out of a regular TDSA mini.

As a TD I might be willing to offer a trophy only option if those that wanted it would be willing to register and pay their entry 6 weeks in advance so I wouldnt have to order plastic inventory for you. What in your mind would you be willing to pay Marie and I for our time and efforts with having to put up with you all weekend? ;)

BTW, if I were to sponsor the total Pro Master GCD entry for you and James as a team would you be willing to take the trophy only and give me 100% of any cash you win? Mitchell's Event History:

2008 / 1st in 6 of 6 Adv. Master / 1st in one Adv. Grand
2007 / 1st in 4 of 6 events / The other two were second.
2006 / 2nd in 3 of 5 events / Must have been a bad year.
2005 / 1st 1 time and 6 2nd in 9 events
2004 / 1st 5 times / 2nd twice / 1 3rd place / 8 total events.
2003 / 1st 2 times / 2nd 4 times / 7 total events.

And these are only the sanctioned events.

I count 19 1st place finishes as an Am.

No telling how many as pro in TDSA minis.

How big is your mantle buddy because it sounds like you have a trophy fetish.

Maybes you can mail a few dollars so we can clean all the sticker residue from all them stickers all over the baskets and tee signs
And maybe replace a tee sign at mclure that one of your stickers ruined ;)

Jerry I assure you that we are taking care of the residue and will see what we can do about the tee sign at McClure. I have about 1000 stickers in the hands of God knows who but I am carrying some acetone and a straight edge in my bag. As far as sending you some money I would much rather take you out for a beer so that I can apologize for all this sticker mess in person.

I posted my earlier comment hoping that it would be beneficial information for you and TD's alike. I am sure it is hard to see things from the eyes of someone relatively new in the sport. Hope to talk to you soon.

I hate to bring up a hopefully dead subject but my 2 pennies.. I got a trophy (glass plate) 2 yrs ago in GCD, i have yet to throw it. I would prefer plastic. TNT already knows my only complaint has been to give out a even number of discs in a doubles payout. I am looking forward to next week. And I know there will be a new Rec division champion...

BILL PENNINGTON AND DAN BOUGHER TO DEFEND THEIR MASTERS WIN FROM 08...

Did you guys really win last year?I only remember Curt and I beating you guys 3 out of 4 rounds. :p

Doesn't matter were really not concerned about you guys
but we are thinking about the rookie masterbater Chris Hicks and whoever his partner is.I heard he spanked some master butt at the City Championships.

Whats this nonsense about entry fees being too high.I remember paying 45 to 60 bucks in 1992.If you want a cheap friendly round of golf play a mini.If you want a fantastic weekend playing a well run tournament on some of the best coarses in the country then pony up the $$ and be thankfull that its in your backyard and you don't have that extra driving expense.

Hicks only got me once in the city series, the other was mine. You guys need to watch out for me and FurDog, and pray you're not on our card. :o:D Oh and youmight want to bring some ear muffs.

Well said on the entry thing. I still say players are not complaining about the amount, they're complaining about value. Two totaly different things.

Nice to see you on the board Ray, nice to see at least one OKC player even owns a computer, let alone knows how to work it. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Dave I think it was best that you were fishing out discs at the first City Championship Tourney at McClure because I played a heck of a lot better there than when you beat me at Dovillio :p.
Sammy had asked to be my partner last year, saying whenever I turned masters he wanted to play doubles with me, but I have called him and haven't heard anything back. Plus my partner/defending champ from last year, Melissa isn't playing this year.
So it looks like I might be sitting this one out Although now that I'm getting married next month it might be good to know now what sitting one out for the team feels like /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

All I can say is SWEET!!!

The stamp was created by our own Gary Nail..

The payout has Star Boss, R-Pro Darts and all kinds of cool disc.

Lets get some people motivated here.

It's Green Country Doubles time.. The only scheduled club events at the Hawk's this year..

Doing the old school alternate shot at McClure on Sunday, it's going to be fun..

Oh yeah, Red Hawk 6-6-6 format is:

1-6 Tough Shot
7-12 Alternate Shot
13-18 Best Shot

I will be at McClure Friday from 5:30 to tee time for Big Dave's Friday night monthly moonlight mini for sign-ups.

Or, Sign -up Saturday morning at Mohawk from 8:00 to 9:00...

Unsanctioned fun, bigger payouts, see you there..

Thanks to my helpers Carla Barton, Kim Click, Brad and Jennifer HOI. Kyle Wilkes helped me out of a bind right before the 2nd round, thanks Kyle :)

Players meeting for everyone, both flights, at McClure at 9:00 in the morning. Flight A will play best score at Dovillio first and Flight B will play alternate shot at McClure. We switch in the afternoon..

Any questions please call me, my # is on the tdsa contact tab.

Also in the Slack Thong vs Devan and Wagle battle, Devan/Wagle gave them 50 strokes for the full tournament, so far Devan/wagle have made up 31 strokes of the 50.

They need another 19 to tie, 20 to win...

Had x-rays this morning. glad to say, nothing but bruised ribs and no golf for a week or two. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Yeah I'll bet when you signed up for a Disc Golf Tourney you didn't know a hockey game was going to break out before you started. :D

Thanks Michael Treat and everyone who helped make this tournament possible.
Maybe we need to have a volunteer day where all the players do something for the volunteers because the disc golf wheel would not turn without them.
Thanks to my partner Sammy for showing up, having me as a partner, and playing some amazing golf. Also I had a blast with everyone on my card for both days - the whole group was very encouraging. Playing doubles is just a lot of fun :)

Agreed! :D

Especially for those that played Pro master, even if they were DFL, it was a PRO dfl. :o/msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Yeah all that talk about you firing me as your partner an still you finish DFL. Even I could have done that for you.

I'll bet you and your partner spent more money on the last chance raffle than your whole entry fee combined. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

If you team with me next year we can bag down into Adv Grd. Master and terrorize those old farts. ;)
