Yes, the player's packs for the ams will be awesome (4 discs, a mini, and a t-shirt). But this does not mean we are shorting people on the payout side. We will pay up to 50% of each field, and with all the cash and merchandise added for each division, anyone cashing will be cashing big. Ask anyone who was at last year's event, even the last cashing in Novice made out like a bandit.

Feb 24 2009, 11:28 AM
It had been discussed altho some of the issues were the amount of traffic at Mingo and having to get another official to cover an additional course. Another possibility is the use of 6 temp holes at Vets and 6 new holes at Shillito if needed which would bring us up to 24/24/24.

I think it was Adv/Int and Rec getting baskets with advanced paying out like 5 spots with baskets and merc and intermediate paying out 2 spots with baskets and merc. First place Rec get a basket. Yea the payouts were pretty hefty.

Did 1st in all am div"s get targets last year or just advanced?
Actually, the Lexington Open gave away 11 baskets last year. Two were CTP throw off prizes. One went to the Recreational champion. Another went to the Advanced Grandmaster champion. Two went to the 1st and 2nd place finishers in Intermediate. While five were given away to the top 5 finishers in Advanced. Pretty sweet.

I mean if you get full, can you use Lake Mingo?
With 3 courses, we can accomodate 270 golfers. If we were to get above 216 or so (foursomes on each card on each course), we would strongly think about adding Lake Mingo as a fourth course.
Even though it is only a 9 hole course, we can add 9 temp holes, and in fact have done so twice in the past year for C Tier events. Mingo's 18 hole layout has been fairly well received by most players and, in fact, plays harder than the 18 hole course at Shillito.
But we would only use it if we needed to in order to speed up play or if we filled up.

The theme of this year's Lexington Open XI is "It's one louder." For those of you who are fans of the classic 1984 mockumentary "This is Spinal Tap," you will need no explanation.
But for those of you who have not seen the movie, or have not seen it in a long time, you probably have no idea what the theme means.
Basically the line "It's one louder" comes from a scene in the movie where one of the members of the band, Spinal Tap, shows off his amp, an amp that goes up to 11 instead of 10. He insists that that makes their amps one louder.
So as we are celebrating the 11th year of the Lexington Open, which we believe will be the biggest one yet, on the 25th anniversary of "This is Spinal Tap," we are declaring that our tournament is "one louder; it's not 10."
You can watch that clip from the movie at http://www.searchforvideo.com/entertainment/movies/this-is-spinal-tap/ Choose the clip entitled "These Go To Eleven." The clip gets to the amp part at the 1:19 minute mark.
If you don't want to watch the clip (which is hilarious), here is the dialogue from the scene:
"Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and...
Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten?
Nigel Tufnel: Exactly.
Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?
Marty DiBergi: I don't know.
Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do?
Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven.
Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder.
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: These go to eleven."
As you can probably tell, we don't take ourselves too seriously, but we do run a seriously fun event. So sign up soon and experience a tournament that is one louder.

This year's Lexington Open has a dual sanctioning. It is an A Tier/SuperTour event for all Professional and Advanced divisions. This means you will get points at a higher rate and it guarantees a certain, minimum amount of cash added for the pros (an amount we will well exceed). This A Tier status also means that you cannot compete in the tournament unless you are a PDGA member.
However, in the lower divisions (Intermediate, Recreational, Novice, and Juniors) we have sanctioned this year's event as a B Tier. That means that even those who are not PDGA members can participate in the tournament in those divisions. They will simply have to pay a $10 non-member fee.
So tell your friends and get signed up right away. You won't want to miss this great tournament.

The Lexington Open is a two day event with 4 rounds on 3 courses. It will use Shillito and Veterans Parks in Lexington, as well as Riney B Park in Nicholasville (about a 10 minute drive south from Lexington).
Shillito is a picturesque city park course. Mostly open with many mature trees, it has a front 9 that yields a ton of birdies, and a more challenging back 9. Last year, the Novice, Recreational and Intermediate divisions played this course twice. It is a great course for the lower levels while also being a fun, scoring course for the Advanced and Professional divisions.
Veterans Park is a great complement to Shillito. It is heavily wooded and very technical. Birdie chances abound, as it is not extremely long. But if you miss your line, that birdie could easily turn into a bogey or worse. A large creek is in play on a number of holes, and it has a history of swallowing discs (at least temporarily). Last year the Advanced group played this challenging course twice.
Riney B, the newest of the 3 courses, is somewhat of a cross between them. It has a wide variety of holes, with about half in the woods and half out in the open. However, it has greater length than either Shillito or Veterans. Although the course has 24 holes, only 18 of them will be used for the tournament. With its length and difficulty, this course was played twice last year by the pros.
With each division playing all 3 courses, all of which are very different types of course, the Lexington Open tends to sort out who the best golfers are in each division.
Come and see for yourself. Sign up today.

Looking for a place to stay during the Lexington Open? We have an official host campground, an official host hotel, and an official premium host hotel. With all of these host accomodations, make sure to mention the Lexington Open so that you can get these discounted rates.
Host Campground -- Ichthus in Wilmore
Ichthus Campground (5 miles from Riney B) will be open for the tournament. It is primitive camping on property adjacent to a 9 hole disc golf course (Centennial Park: check out http://www.pdga.com/course-details?id=2604 for a description and directions to the camping and course). The cost is $10 per vehicle per night. The $10 gets you running, drinkable water (a spigot) and a port-a-pot.
To get a spot, call Ichthus ministries at 859-858-3001, Ext. 113, and talk to Allison. If she is not in, LEAVE HER A VOICEMAIL MESSAGE. She assures me that she will get back to you soon. You can pay the fee by check to Ichthus Ministries or by Visa or Mastercard over the phone.
It is primitive. But for $10 a night per carload, it's pretty tough to beat. If enough people confirmed that they would be camping there (20 or more), we could add a shower facility for $10 per person per night. (There is a $400 fee for getting the building un-winterized.) With more campers, the price goes down.
Host Hotel -- Econolodge in Nicholasville
Located less than a mile from Riney B, our host hotel is on Nicholasville Road, perfectly situated between all three courses.
A single room (1 queen bed) will run $59.00 per night. A double room (2 queen beds) will run $67.00 per night. Each room has a coffee maker and blow dryer, and most have microwave/fridge units. The hotel offers a free continental breakfast each morning including hot pancakes.
The hotel reservation also gets you a 10% discount at Applebee's and JD Legends restaurants in Nicholasville.
Contact the hotel at 859-887-8712. Judy is our contact person there.
Premium Host Hotel -- Holiday Inn Express Nicholasville
For those who want a nicer hotel, the Holiday Inn Express in Nicholasville is our premium host hotel. This hotel is literally right around the corner and within sight of Riney B. Roll out of bed and go play the course.
The discounted room rate they are offering is $105 per night. This room rate includes a heated indoor pool, fitness room, free high-speed wireless internet, and a complimentary full buffet breakfast. Each room also includes a fridge and microwave.
Conatct the hotel at 859-885-8080 or go online to
http://www.hiexpress.com/nicholasville . Jeremy is our contact person there.
With all three of these hosts, please remember to mention the tournament in order to get the discounted rates.

This year's Lexington Open is guaranteeing a minimum of $2,000 added cash to the Men's Open division (MPO).
Last year we added around $1,500 to that division alone. Combined with the entry fees, the Open division last year paid out over $4,200 with a top prize of $1,010. For all the pro divisions combined last year, each pro received a tournament value of 208% of what they paid in.
This year we expect to pay out far more. We are increasing the cash added and we are projecting to have a greater number of participants. All of this means fatter payouts for you.
So get your registration in. You don't want to miss this lucrative opportunity to cash and cash big.

The Player's Packs for this year's tournament are better than they have ever been before. Available for all Ams who pre-register, the packs contain 4 custom-stamped tournament discs from 4 different disc golf companies, 2 custom-stamped minis, and a tournament t-shirt.
Many people have asked what discs are in the Player's Packs. Here for the first time is the list:
1. The new Gateway Voodoo putter, custom-stamped with a Gateway twist in soft or supersoft plastic.
2. An Elite X midrange disc from Discraft, half the packs will have a custom-stamped Buzzz and half will have a custom-stamped Stratus.
3. The new Innova Groove driver, custom-stamped in champion plastic
4. A Sparkle Rogue from DGA with a unique custom-stamp.
5. A mini-driver with a cool tournament stamp from Innova.
6. A mini from one of our sponsors, Phillip Gall's Outdoor and Ski sporting goods store.
7. A tournament t-shirt with the logo on the front and our generous sponsors on the back.
8. Some other miscellaneous stuff (pencil, stickers, etc.).
All told, we are offering all ams an $80 player's pack! And the most any am has to pay is $60. Oh yeah, and the payouts will be ridiculous also. As someone said last year, "You would be dumb to not play in this tournament."
We know you're smart. So get your registration in today.

In addition to the minimum of $2,000 being added to the Men's Pro Open division, this year we are also guaranteeing a minimum of $1,000 cash added to the Women's Pro Open division.
Ladies, that is a lot of money up for grabs, especially considering that last year we had only 3 pro women in the field. In fact, as of right now, Nicole Frazer, the only pro woman signed up so far, stands to make over a $1,000 at this tournament.

At many tournaments, sanctioned or unsanctioned, if you happen to finish in the middle of the pack in your division, you're not quite sure if you wil cash or not. While the PDGA requires that a minimum of 40% of each division "cash," I have heard of some tournaments that have paid even less, some paying closer to 30%.
At the Lexington Open, however, we have a decade long tradition of generous payouts. This year, just like last year, we will pay out 50% of each field (plus ties for last cash). That means, for example, that if you finish at least tied for 20th out of 40 in your division, you will still win something. And considering our generous added cash and merchandise, it will probably be more than you think.
Sign up today to secure your spot.

In addition to the minimum $2,000 added cash for the Men's Pro Open field and the minimum $1,000 added cash for the Women's Pro Open field, we will not be neglecting our other pros at the Lexington Open.
We are guaranteeing a minimum of $1,000 added cash for the other pro divisions combined. So if you play Pro Master, Grandmaster, Senior Grandmaster, or Legends, those divisions will share $1,000 over and above their entry fees, in addition to having the most fun of any fields at the tournament.
Last year's Pro Grandmaster field was awesome and featured some great competition between a bunch of world champions and other great golfers including Dr. Rick Voakes, Peter Shive, Jim Ashton, Chuck Kennedy, Darell Motley, and Randall Roseman. That kind of field deserves all the added cash we can get them.

In addition to the minimum of $4,000 cash we are adding to the pro fields, the Lexington Open will again this year take good care of the amateurs as well.
While obviously you can't add "cash" to amateur divisions who can't win cash, we can add merchandise such as discs, baskets, bags, shirts, hats, and all kinds of other disc golf goodies. Since we can add merchandise to the am pot, we are.
This year, we are guaranteeing a minimum of $4,000 added merchandise to the amateur field. This means that every division, even down to Novice and Juniors will have merchandise added to their payouts over and above their entry fees.
Oh yeah, and this is ON TOP OF the incredible $80 Player's Packs that all amateurs will get for pre-registering.
What all of that means is that the Lexington Open is one of the most generous tournaments you will ever play in. In fact, while the PDGA's minimum payout for ams for a SuperTour event is 110+%, last year the Lexington Open gave the ams a 362% return on their entry fees. And this year should be even better.
So get signed up today. You don't want to miss this event.

During the tournament's first round, every player will be eligible to compete in and win 4 different Closest-To-the-Pin (CTP) competitions on 4 different holes. These holes will be chosen so that everyone who is eligible for that particular CTP actually has a reasonable chance of winning it. In other words, these CTPs will not be on long, bomber holes that eliminate half of the field before the competition even begins (sorry big arms).
The prizes for these CTPs are unbelievable this year. They range from your typical disc golf swag and discs, to free entries to future tournaments to the two grand prizes: a free night's stay in a luxury king Jacuzzi suite. That might make the wife (or husband) forgive you for blowing an entire weekend playing that silly disc golf game.
To get in on these awesome prizes, just register today at www.pdgasignup.com (http://www.pdgasignup.com) or at www.njcpr.org (http://www.njcpr.org)

After all the fun and festivities of the tournament are over and while you are waiting to see if you will need a bigger vehicle in which to take home all of your winnings, you can participate in a few fun disc golf activities at James Lane Allen (JLA)Elementary School, site of our awards ceremony and of an EDGE disc golf course.
First, if there are any playoffs for any divisions, you can watch as those ties are broken on a safari course at JLA. Last year Lee Stephens outlasted Chuck Ridgeway in a playoff for the Recreational championship.
Second, you can participate in a free Ring of Fire, chock full of all kinds of great disc golf swag. Last year, someone took home a practice basket, along with lots of other good stuff.
Third, you can participate in a CTP throw off for a disc golf practice basket. The cost for the throw off is only $1 per throw, or $5 for 6 throws.
All of these should keep you entertained while you patiently wait the short time for us to count cards and get everyone paid out.

Thanks to Peter Shive and the Senior Foundation, the Lexington Open was again awarded a Senior Grant this year. What that means is that over and above the minimum of $1,000 cash being added to the non-Open Pro divisions (combined), we will be offering $250 additional added cash to the professional age-protected divisions*.
This is even more incentive for all of you Pro Masters, Grandmasters, Senior Grandmasters, and Legends to come and play this event. You will be sharing a minimum of $1,250 cash added.

* There must be at least 2 people in a division in order for the Senior Grant to be used in that division. However, that division, if offered, would still be eligible for the $1,000 cash added from other sponsors.

In addition to the sweet Player's Packs and all the cash and merchandise added for all the divisions, there is also the Ace Pool.
The Ace Pool costs $5 to get into and is good for the entire tournament. That gives you 72 chances to hit one, and at least 7 of those holes are under 200 feet.
Last year, 102 people (out of the 141 playing) got into the Ace Pool, making it worth over $500. Only 4 people hit aces, and 1 of them unfortunately wasn't in the Ace Pool. That left our 3 winners with $170 each. Needless to say, their tournaments finished up pretty well, and that was before cashing.
With more people playing this year, the Ace Pool pot should be even higher. Come and see if you can hit one. Sign up today.

Only 7 more days until we leave I can't wait. Already a 142 preregistered that is impressive. I doubt I will be able to get there in time but just in case is the Reading clinic going to be at Veteran's.

Yes, we predict a Yeti spotting in the woods of Veterans Park, somewhere near the practice basket, next Friday at 6 p.m.

Lyle, sounds like it's gonna be a awesome tournament, too bad I can't play since I have to wash my hair or something that day. Oh wait I forgot I'm supposed to be one of the pool officials that weekend, I guess I will see you there anyway!

I know all of the courses are pretty close to each other but I'm surprised that you don't schedule it so players play their double course on maybe Sunday to potentially reduce travel time/gas? It's also one less day with potential problems when a course or bigger pool takes longer in the morning so they're still barely finishing when the next pool arrives. One less day for each pool director to scramble at lunch time to get to the next course with scoring done and pairings made.

Yea, double up Riney B on Sunday...and if I can get off work I'll come down and play Masters...that way I can cash when the old guys are complaining about the long walks at Riney B....O wait...Chuck is hiding in Grand Masters ;)
I don't think Chuck would be very afraid of me anyway..he's seen me putt and it wasn't pretty. I'm trying my best to get out of work this weekend. Maybe I can get thru Shillito this time without breaking my index finger on my throwing hand again.

There's no hiding in the old man pro divisions when you come to Kentucky. I'm lowest rated whether in Master, GM or Sr GM and Greenwell isn't even entered. My best move would be to play Advanced where I might be able to finish mid-pack.

Just a reminder that since this year's tournament is a PDGA B Tier event for Intermediate and below, anyone can participate, even if you are not a PDGA member. If you are not a member, you will simply need to pay the $10 non-PDGA fee. This fee also applies to all non-active PDGA members. So if you have not yet renewed your PDGA membership, you will have to pay the $10 fee.
(If you desire to play pro or advanced, you must be an active PDGA member since the Lexington Open is a SuperTour event for those divisions.)

Applebee's in Nicholasville, one of our generous sponsors, is offering all Lexington Open participants 10% off their meals all weekend long. Applebee's is practically across the street from Riney B Park, so stop by sometime while you're in town.
Look for your red, 10% off coupon in your Player's Packs and support our sponsors!

Wish I was making down for this one, but can't do a two day event this weekend.
Thanks so much for sponsoring the Kentucky State Championships at Idlewild Disc Golf Course.
Not to mention you didn't shoot that bad!

Nice job getting the scores up so fast. They were ready by the time I got home, (that was 240 miles though).
Hope everyone enjoyed today, Sunday is expected to be 16 degrees cooler and a bit damp.
Nice work J - Bird & Johnny Sias.

Didn't try to picture the hole, it was 283ft, completely open and slightly downhill. OB about 15 meters left of target.

We couldn't have asked for better weather, except Sunday. :p
Once I find out how many inches of rain we got I'll post it as it was incredible. I want to thank all of the players that came out and trudged through the rain that lasted all day Sunday. All sorts of interesting ruling issues came up due to Riney flooding out. (Which it did in the span of only a half an hour between rounds!!)
If you Lost a disc due to the water let me know what it was and as the water drains out we'll be on the look out.
I want to personally thank the Pool I was TDing, the Intermediates and the Recreationals, as they were all great sports and showed great sportsmanship though it all.
Thanks again

I saw 2 reports both were about 1 inch. Since the Riney B property looked like reclaimed wetlands, not suitable for any building projects it is not surprising that the land flooded so easily, especially with the saturated ground going into the weekend. Looks like the perfect example of the land available for disc golf in many areas. If it were prime land with sound soil the land would likely not have been available for disc golf.

If you lost a disc at Riney or Vets on Sunday let me know via PM, or on our message boards at www.bdga.org (http://www.bdga.org) and as they turn up well work on getting them back to you.
I believe we've already recovered 3 discs from that rainy, rainy day.
