Ironwood 09 Fundraiser Discs are here
The new Fundraiser Boss and Destroyer are here and looking good. They have the tourny logo as seen here. They are $20 and I will have them available at the monthlies and the Icebowl. They went fast last year and I only have 25 of each. Make that 24 of each. Can't wait to throw mine.

I just wanted to take a minute and say something.
Sidney and I have talked about some of what is going on with his TD work on this tournament. I am impressed. The menu for lunch is kick butt. The logo is very sweet.
Good job Sidney. The brothers Olcott are doing the work we need done. Thanks buddies.
You're Ironwood Open Trophy will be getting put together soon. Keep a couple of those discs for me. I at least want a Monarch, most likely a boss too.

I just picked up the March issue of Flying Disc Magazine at Barnes and Noble Booksellers in Cranberry. As you know, the PDGA no longer is sending this mag to its members. You can subscribe directly to FDM, but the new issue on the racks now.
I'd recommend calling your local Borders or Barnes and Noble to be sure they have it stocked. If they don't or are out of supply, ask them to carry it.
This issue is much broader in its scope of disc sports, with a too heavy (IMO) dose of disc dogs. Marcus was interested because there were some articles on Ultimate and some how-to pieces on disc golf. The Delaveaga course in Santa Cruz was featured as was hole 11 at Victory Park used at K-zoo Worlds in '08.

as was hole 11 at Victory Park used at K-zoo Worlds in '08.
Yuck - I thought that was one of the worst holes on that course. Playing on a hogback only a dozen feet wide, any disc that faded left landed in a deep pond and wasn't retrievable unless you wanted to go swimming. After the tunnel, any disc that turned over to the right too soon went down a hill and onto the green of hole#10 where it could take out players putting there.

Hey guys, off topic question here. I went to make sure I was registered, and am! While I was on the page I saw that I gained some type of points from the CAN-AM cup from last summer. Any idea how those points were assigned? I was 6-3 and was ranked 4 from last in my flight. Was the ranking assigned according to how your team did? Thanks if anyone answers.

The points assigned for the Can Am Cup, because it is a team event, are based on Whatisit's place in the tournament. You got a point for every team you finished higher than in the final standings.
By the way, the Can Am Cup will be held August 29-30 at Brown's Farm. Let's get at least four teams from Western PA this year!

Tomorrow (Friday) is the day we put the "finishing touches" on the Lakeview course at Moraine. Sid, KB and myself plan to meet at the course around 11:00 am to set up the tent and repair/extend the OB rope on holes 2, 15 and 18. We also plan to give the tee blocks a fresh coating of paint (Leo has replacement tee blocks for the three which are missing) and we will also be marking a "casual relief" area for the wet spot on hole 2. I hope to make new distance markers for holes 6 and 15.....I'll try to build those items tonight. Anyone who has the day off tomorrow is more than welcome to join us for course prep.....then we play golf, baby!
Wags is going out today to clean up debris on the hillside of hole 16 and I plan to bring my pole saw to the course this evening and take down some low branches here and there. Overall, the course is looking really nice. If anyone reading this plans to practice today or tomorrow, please be on the lookout for any litter on the course. We've done a pretty good job about picking up the few bits of trash, but with the weather being nice I'm sure there will be lots of casuals on the course before the tourney. I've started carrying plastic grocery bags so I can pick up any trash I find during the round. I really dislike seeing litter on our beautiful Lakeview course....especially before we show it off to visitors from out of town!
Thanks to everyone who has pitched in on the course improvements this spring.........especially the mules. You know who you are. :)

Apr 16 2009, 11:13 AM
Jerry, I don't think you have to mark anything on hole 2? Just leave it as is and play it as casual water. But I don't think you need to rope it off or anything???
Casual Water: Bodies of water other than those that have been specifically designated by the director prior to the start of the round as out-of-bounds or those that have been specifically designated by the director prior to the start of the round as not being casual water.
sandalbagger
Apr 16 2009, 11:19 AM
though I guess you could mark it off and put in a drop zone??
804.01 Special Conditions
A. Rules governing special conditions that may exist on the course shall be clearly defined and disseminated to all players prior to the start of the tournament. All special conditions shall be covered in the players' meeting. Each player is responsible for adhering to all points covered in the player's meeting.
B. The drop zone may be utilized in special conditions. The director must announce prior to the tournament how it is to be used and if a penalty throw is to be assessed. If no penalty is announced prior to the tournament, none will be assessed for use of the drop zone in special conditions.
kUrTp
Apr 16 2009, 11:43 AM
Chrissy, we decided after the course championship that marking a drop zone on that hole would be a good idea. Reason being, if you land towards the top of the casual water and take relief, up to 5 meters directly in line with the basket, you could still be in the muck.
With a drop zone, there will be no penalty but distance to the basket.
sandalbagger
Apr 16 2009, 11:53 AM
you can make a drop zone, but I will still stand in that muck :) It has never bothered me before, but for some they might like to keep their GoreTex shoes dry.
So the question now is, if I were to land in the mucky area, do I have to use the drop zone or can I still play it where it landed?? I know if it was casual water, I could play it where it landed, but what if a drop zone is marked, can you still play it where it landed, or do you have to use the drop zone??
kUrTp
Apr 16 2009, 01:18 PM
The drop zone will be used only if the player doesn't want to get his GoreTex shoes wet. It's up to the player, they can either play it from where the disc is at or from the drop zone with no stroke penalty.

Apr 17 2009, 12:15 AM
my GoreTex shoes already leak... however i plan on throwing past the muck on hole 2 anyhow... if i don't its usually because i am way off course anyhow.. leaving my disc no where near the much to even use the drop zone.. so i shouldn't have to worry to much about this...
Jerry i will be heading up there after work tomorrow to play a round.. ill bring a bag with me if i see any trash ill be sure to grab it.. also throw any debris off the fairways..
Good Luck everyone this weekend.. i hope everyone plays well!!!!

Apr 17 2009, 07:38 AM
So the question now is, if I were to land in the mucky area, do I have to use the drop zone or can I still play it where it landed?? I know if it was casual water, I could play it where it landed, but what if a drop zone is marked, can you still play it where it landed, or do you have to use the drop zone??
Kurt already answered this up-thread, but players will have the option of either playing from where their disc lies in the mud or playing from the drop zone. The muddy area will be marked as a casual relief bunker. The drop zone will be toward the back end of the bunker, thus, players are penalized distance if they choose to use the drop instead of play from the mud.
I think the casual relief area will be more of a factor for the pro men playing the gold tees. All other divisions play either blue or white tees so there should be fewer of those players ending up in the muck. And it's definitely mucky this year....

true. I'm worried about these Pittsburgh Ams who stepped up there play this weekend. There were some great rounds from the blue tees as well as the white tees. Pittsburgh really needs more competition in the area and we need some more people to help push the current pros to play even better.
And I think from now on for the monthlies we need to start playing the GOLD TEES!!!!
and now to try and remember how to putt. 17 missed putts from under 25 feet!!! 7 double bogeys on Saturday, none on Sunday, but 7 missed putts Sunday. It was so bad I ended up switching my putter after the 6th miss.
It's all about confidence................

Are you refering to me? haha My last round was truly amazing. Started on hole #9 and missed a 20 footer for par. After that something just clicked in my mind. Then proceeded to birdie, 10, 11, 13, 15, 18, 2, 3, 5, and 7. Only other bogie was hole #12 which in that pin didn't bother me.
My other two rds where just as good except for taking doubles on 4 and 6 the first two rds.
Hopefully my confidence will stay where its at. I was slamming putts all weekend. If I continue to play as well as i did, I see myself making the jump before the end of the year.

your no bagger :) What you have to remember is even though you shot good for the weekend, you need to be consistently shooting 970 rated rounds to have a cash in B and C-tiers. And at least a 990 to cash in A-tiers.
The 945 - 970 player has it rough. Too good to be an am, but not quite good enough to cash in Open. That is the range where you see alot of people start dropping out of the sport because they get so frustrated spending money at tourneys.
kUrTp
Apr 21 2009, 04:52 PM
Yeah, I know i'm not. I'm only a 914 rated player. I hope that moves up to around 930-940 by the end of the year.
And you are exactly right about the 945 - 970 rated players.

Apr 22 2009, 10:06 AM
I already talk to Jeff LaGrassa about this.
His Response....
"The online calculator needs at least 10 propagators with ratings above 800 playing a given layout to calculate accurate ratings. These competitors WILL receive official ratings after the next ratings update after the results are looked at by a human and accurate ratings can be calculated. But with less than 10 propagators, the unofficial ratings have the chance to be off significantly so they are not provided at all.
Unfortunately, this usually happens for smaller and lesser skilled divisions like Intermediate / Recreational / amateur grandmasters, etc. who may be the only divisions to play short tees. However, I have seen it happen at tournaments where, for example, only the Open played a set of super pro tees and there were less than 10 Open players and propagators."
