High Desert Distance Challenge (http://www.scientificdiscgolf.com/HDDC.html)

April 3-5 2009

A 3 day World Flying Disc Federation format distance event
Brought to you by Scientific Disc Golf (http://www.scientificdiscgolf.com/index.html)

Location: The Ivanpah dry lake bed in the high desert of Primm, Nevada on the border of California and Nevada, 44 miles from Las Vegas. Elevation: 2618 feet.

The elevation and weather combine to make this one of the premier sites in the world for flying disc distance throwing. The World Flying Disc Federation currently lists 3 World records set at this site. This means you have an excellent chance (actually up to 45 excellent chances) of throwing your longest throw ever maybe even a World Record (http://www.wfdf.org/index.php?page=records/index.htm#distance) !

This area is home to Primm Resorts (http://www.primmvalleyresorts.com/) and Casinos with entertainment and theme park attractions such as the Desperado one of the top 10 roller coasters in North America.

Consider adding competition for Super Class category discs. Several Overall tournaments besides Minnesota may consider switching from regular discs to Super Class for the distance and golf events this year and new records will be set in age categories. Current World Record for a disc that meets Super Class specs appears to be 1976 Dave Johnson USA - 125.57m - Wham-O 119g. Stork is checking to see if there are other old records for Women or other age brackets.

Thanks Chuck,

Anyone wishing to throw for a superclass record is more than welcome to do so. We''ll measure them all.

I misinterpreted the "upside down throw" thinking it was a thumber or tomohawk but it is not. The upside down throw is a strange throw where the disc is released upside down and stays that way the whole flight. I don't consider that to be too significant, so the 100 premium for a record in the upside down throw is withdrawn.

The outdoor distance record premium of $100 still stands, and I will contact Dan Roddick to see if we might establish an overhand throw record, ie. tomohawk or thumber. Further updates here on this issue.

what about the side arm record?

dwiggmd
Feb 23 2009, 02:39 PM
David,

Good question. I talked to Dan Roddick about both overhand and sidearm records and it appears that the WFDF does not have the resources to keep track of these. The WFDF has no immediate plans for doing this.

I have decided to start a section on the Scientific Disc Golf Website that will keep track of these two records as a part of a project to collect Disc Golf records in general. I will record the longest sidearm at the event as well as the longest overhand throw for the various divisions and list them as (for now) the unofficial records for these throws pending good documentation of any longer throws in these styles.

Innova has just added $10,000 to the event!

The following two conditions must be met for a player to be awarded the Innova High Desert Distance Challenge bonus of $10,000:

1) Player must have the longest official throw of the 2009 High Desert Distance Challenge competition (Friday, Saturday, Sunday included).

2. That same throw must be deemed under WFDF rules to be an official new Open world distance record (currently at 250 meters). The player must fulfill the above conditions using a PDGA approved Innova disc.

Any other organizations desiring to sponsor the event or premiums for the event please contact [email protected]

i think there is a world disctance record for the tomahawk owned by a guy name Jaime out of Texas.

here it is on the WFDF site

"Upside Down Distance:
Open: 125.45 m Jayme Wilson (USA) 10/16/93 Austin, TX "

please read prior post on this thread on that topic. The WFDF upside down throw is literally upside down the entire flight. It is not a thumber or tomohawk.

Best we can tell from Stork's records this is the history of Open Distance records since 1970. The Super Class and Vintage Class records are the best we can confirm unless we can determine that the weights of discs used for the 1982 or 1983 records were less than 151 grams. If that were true then either of those would be the Vintage record instead of Dave D's.

1970 Victor Malafronte USA - 84.10m - Wham-O Professional Model
1970 Bob May USA - 85.04m Wham-O - Professional Model

WFDF "upside down" throw rule (http://www.wfdf.org/index.php?page=records/record_rules.htm)

"For upside-down distance attempts, the disc must be released with the top surface or crown of the disc facing the ground. It must also travel the entire flight in that manner, including landing upside-down."

Hi everyone,

Those of you who have expressed interest but have not yet entered please let me know ASAP if you plan on attending or not. I am making trophies 1st thu 3rd for each division so I suspect everyone will likely get a trophy. I am also having nice Dri-fit shirts embroidered for everyone. Please let me know your shirt size

There have been some questions regarding special Bosses from Innova. The number of entries has not justified a run of discs and since I do not work for Innova, I cannot do a midnight run etc. Having said that, Marc Molnar has been EXTREMELY helpful in assisting me with permits, equipment, advice, etc

We will meet Friday afternoon. I will be available all day (My plane arrives Thursday night) Since there are not too many entries I can probably accommodate everyone's schedule.

I'm thinking of having group meeting at Whiskey Pete's at 3PM on Friday in front of the front entrance where we met last year. Anyone who wants to throw before this for their qualifying round can contact me by email or cell phone 336 259-0382. Anyone arriving late can likely meet us on the lake bed or call me on the cell phone.

We can meet at 10 AM on Saturday at the same place. If everyone is there on Friday we might just change the meeting place to the lake bed for Sat AM

Sunday my plane leaves from Vegas at 2:30 PM. That gives us to 11AM or so to complete things. Considering the small number involved that should be plenty of time if we start at 9AM or so.

Tentative Schedule:

Friday 3 PM - Meet in front of Whiskey Pete's
Sat 10 AM - Meet in front of Whiskey Pete's (possibly the lake bed)
Sunday 9 AM - Meet on lake bed

Awards: Trophies for top 3 in each division,
Dri-fit commemorative shirt for everyone PLEASE TELL ME YOUR SHIRT SIZE ASAP
Innova $10,000 premium previously announced
Sponsored by Scientific Disc Golf $100 to anyone who breaks a WFDF outdoor distance record at the event. AN EXTRA $100 if they do it using Scientific Disc Golf Rip Grip.

Entries thus far include:

Marc Jarvis
Jeff Stoops
David Madruga
David Wiggins Jr.

Likely

Suzette Simmons
Jack Cooksey
Luke Butch

I'm kinda curious as to how you measured wind speeds for each round and for each day. Do you have some sort of wind speed guage? It's always difficult for us to calculate wind speeds when Nick is setting his records. It's always important to have accurate readings on things like these. Congrats to young David, in this and all his accomplishments....Manny

Manny,

We used a windtronic 2 omnidirectional wind speed meter. Wind speed was measured at time of release. Dee Dee Simmons did most of the measuring though others pitched in to help. I recorded the speeds as they called them out.
