I am very interested to see what you, the players want at this years King's Cup IV. In the past we have played all four rounds from the longs for all players. I have considered changing the format in consideration of players in divisions that don't want as much of a challenge. We are ready to sanction our event but want to get your input before we make it official. Please post or PM as soon as possible. We are ready to get on the calendar and are already working to make this years event the best yet. Thanks for your input or inputt.

in may we will have a lot more daylight to work with but in the spirit of fairness i would see it o.k. to let Rec. and ladies play 2 or more rounds from the shorts. this may improve flow of rounds as well.
If the Castle had Rec tee's i would do this for sure:-)

I'm fairly sure that when most Pro and Advanced golfers think of Kinston they think of the long pads. I would say keep Pro and adv. 4 rounds of longs. however I think it would be reasonable to put lower divisions on the short pads for 1 or 2 rounds. it would speed up play a good deal. if they played shorts in the morning the pro's wouldnt have a 2 hour lunch break.

IMHO...
pros and advanced - longs all 4 rounds
intermediate / advanced masters / advanced women - short long short long
int. women / rec / jrs - shorts all 4 rounds (I would assume most of these players rarely play the longs in casual rounds - also, would help with speed of play)
twig
Jan 26 2009, 12:32 PM
Speaking as one of those who would be in the lower divisions, I think putting some of those divisions on the shorts for some/all rounds probably could help speed things up, though I don't play the course often enough to know where to make that break and for how many rounds. And while there are some courses where I simply would not play the tournament if it meant some/all rounds on the longest/most difficult setup (I like a challenge, I'd play those tees casually, but I do like to be competitive), Kinston isn't one of those places. In fact I think I actually would prefer all longs. But count me in the group that's there regardless of the tees.

I think all these ideas are great banter and everyone on here so far seem to be on the same track. the biggest thing to keep in mind Joe is mixing divisions and teepads during multiple rounds is making the distiction extremely clear for the players. i can think of an example during the sneaky pete or alamance Pro/Am a few years ago where a group played from the wrong pad and cost them strokes. i guess what i am saying is it is making more work for the TD. not a bad thing just a constructive observation.

I want to run a great tournament and tournaments are for players. That is why it is so important for me to get this feedback from you. The King's Cup is your tournament to play in and for us to host. I know that there is always room for improvement and I am aware that there has been a lapse in time between groups finishing their respective rounds of play. I want each player to, regardless of division, feel that they are getting what they came for and that we can run the event smoothly. I don't want to get to the point where we are trying to unfold too many layouts per round. It is a nightmare and can, as Dave noted, cause confusion and even cause people to play the wrong layout. Please keep the good constructive criticism flowing, I appreciate it.

Joe,
First, last years tournament was fantastic! You guys did an outstanding job on every facet that I am aware of, that you had control over. If there was an issue (not talking about Scotty's talk vs. storm) it would be the late finish by the lower groups, which has been discussed at length here. A better question to ask you would be "Do you need any help from us?"
I definitely look forward to the King's cup!
Peace, Doc

Thanks Doc, just your input and your continued support. I really haven't known you very long but you have quickly become a favorite player of mine. My 2 sense. Have and always play the Kings Cup, Lord Willing. Always dread the late arrival home on Sunday, as I get up every/every morning 0445. Longs on Sat , everybody. Longs on Sun for Pro and Adv men, and shorts on Sun for the rest of us. You may want to put the Mini Thumber who is a pretty good rec player on the novice pads, since the PDGA considers my rating as a Rec player. The Kings Cup, is for Queens too, and the Cupcake( who is under 17 yoa) would rather play longs.
Hope this helps.
I still am a pretty good Rec player.

I think that at the moment it appears that most are in favor of Open and Advanced 4 rounds from the longs and others some combination of longs and shorts. I will be sending in the sanctiioning agreement early next week so if there are any others that would like to make suggestions on layout, please let me know. Our club will be discussing the issue based on your input. Thanks for taking the time to post and call. I appreciate your support.

I think that what you have here would br great for your tournament, reasonable fot the fact that the longs can be rough for a new player and this would also speed up the play so we can enjoy the graet things you and kinston Disc Golf bring to the sport in NC, all i know is i love playing in kinston and what ever layout you do i will be there, c u in buckhorn little buddy

Glad to hear that the Kings Cup will be held again and that I might still be in the States for that. I started playing last year and Kings Cup III was my first tournament. It was fun. Now that Ive gotte better (a little) I would love to play all 4 round from the long. But I guess it might be time to play advanced anyway. :)
Looking forward to that!!!

Feb 03 2009, 12:18 PM
My personal preference when playing a tournament using two (or more) sets of pads is to get more than one crack at any given setup (that extra round from the long tees will build character:D). I make exceptions for certain courses, to be sure...you have to take most Charlotte courses in manageable doses, to be sure. And Burlington's neighboring courses allow for 4 setups, though as a rule I have never played a pdga there (which is a story for another time, but anyone who's ever played there can probably think of a few reasons). And keeping them in the same order from day to day (long tees morning, short tees afternoon, for example) seems the simplest and easiest thing for everyone to keep track of, though depending on certain factors (setting up mandos, moving baskets, etc.) I can understand going with a schedule that doesn't necessitate changing anything from Saturday afternoon to Sunday morning. But whether it's all long, all short, or something in between, I'll be there regardless.

To those not in the know, the Kinston course is a bi-otch off the fairway, and its quite easy and common from the longs.
The time separation between the first card in and the last was (how long Joe?) an hour or more.
That is very difficult to work around, and delayed everything.
That said, I vote :

Also, we're running an informal Super Class event on April 4 at Barnet Park. It will be run like our monthlies and is intended to be a fun day, 2 rounds, seeing how Barnet plays with Super Class plastic. It is also a fund raiser for the King's Cup IV. Check our web site for details.
And don't forget, the next day, Sunday, April 5, is our monthly, which will be a good chance to get a look at the course before the King's Cup.

It looks like all of round three was under the layout that the Intermediates and Recs played. The scores are the same.
Anyways, another great King's Cup!! Dakota, great shooting. The whole weekend (even with the rain) was just awesome. Way to go Kinston crew!

Thanks Joe, that was my one good round...and thanks again for another superbly run fun event. I think we'll all be stronger golfers after dealing with those final round conditions. I
appreciate everyone who helped make this event happen. Spotters with orange DOT vests...awesome.

Thanks man, I feel like we we continue to improve each year. We had great sponsorship and a great core group of people that made everything run so smoothly. I wish I could control the weather as it, to me, was the biggest let down of the weekend. I still had a great time with the event and I am excited about what we were able to accomplish in payout and extras. We hope to be able to continue to make the King's Cup one of the finest events in the state and region. Thanks again for coming out and playing and I hope to see you out soon.
