South Carolina's oldest tournament will upgrade to on-line registration this year. Registration for the 2009 Earlewood Classic will be at ZoneDriven.com this coming Tuesday, January 27th, at 9:00 A.M.

We will preload the ZD shopping cart to accommodate a waiting list. Each registration will be time stamped to the second to ensure that first come are added to the registration list first. All charges will be pre-authorized and not fully processed so that we may issue refunds to individuals that do not want to be on the waiting list. We will contact every individual that is on the wait list to determine whether they want to remain on the wait list.

Please note that all orders will automatically receive a confirmation of purchase. This does not provide any indication as to whether you are in the tournament or on the waiting list. Again, we will contact those that are on the wait list. The names of those who are in will be shown at pdga.com in the tournament section. A flyer for the 2009 Earlewood Classic will be posted soon at Columbia Disc Golf Club (http://www.columbiadiscgolfclub.com)

Thanks for your past and current support of disc golf at Earlewood.

Take care,
Harold

Steve, The registration items will be populated into the Zonedriven shopping cart ZoneDriven Pro Shop (http://www.zonedriven.com/proshop/) at 9 tomorrow morning.

Dave, I am told that multiple entries will not be a problem other than the extra time it takes to complete.

Thanks, Harold, for helping bring the Earlewood Classic into the 21st century. Having set a presumptive record for shortest time to fill a tournament by snail mail, we'll see if we can set the overall record tomorrow.

Earlewood fans should know that park construction projects will likely alter a few holes after this year's event. Perhaps for the better, but this is the last chance to play the course in its current setup.

....not to leave the impression that Earlewood will be completely revamped. The building will be torn down and replaced by one more than twice as big; how this will affect holes 1 & 10 is uncertain. (I gather the city kindly postponed demolition so we could use the building one last time). A paved walking trail will run through the park; anyone familiar with Earlewood can figure out that there's not a square foot of land where you can put a trail without affecting the course. Efforts are being made to make the amphitheatre more useable, as well.

It would be nice if everyone would pass along the word about online registration. We've tried to reach as many people as we can. Of course, we'll understand if you don't pass the word until after your own registration is confirmed!

David,

What are the ideas for the changes after the construction?

I just don't know how much land there is to work with out there....

I missed the last city/parks department meeting, but from the prior meeting:

The Parks department is moving their headquarters to Earlewood. Administrative offices, not the trucks & equipment. They will tear down the current building and replace it with one about 2 times the size, in the same general location. We've been told it won't adversely affect the course, but we're concerned about the hole 1 tee and hole 10---especially with the assumption that they'll put windows along the side of the building facing the hole 10 hyzer route.

On the other hand....this will give us better facilities, bathrooms (at least during the workweek), and perhaps better oversight of the park.

There is also interest in making the amphitheatre state more useable....which means staging areas off stage....which may compromise the hole 13 tee.

A separate project is a paved or rubberized walking trail, landscaped with native plants, running through the park. If we get some input, perhaps we can minimize the disruption, or even add some O.B. (picture a trail diving holes 1 & 9).

You're absolutely right that there is precious little surplus land at Earlewood. There's an area above holes 16/17 with room for a hole or two that we've used in local doubles and once in a tournament.

Of course, you know how it goes with parks departments. Disc golfers, like everyone else, have provincial interests in the course, and anytime parks departments start talking about changes, we're concerned. Sometimes merited, like Owens Field---sometimes the changes benefit us.

Which is about all I know or think I know. Again, I don't want to give the impression that it's a "farewell to Earlewood as we know it"....just that it's likely to be altered someone in the future, much as the amphitheatre seating took away the really severe rollers on hole 15, or the losses of some huge trees over the years softened the course a bit (hole 12 lost the last large pine that hyzer shots try to sneak around).

One improvement we should be able to make in the future, from the local end, is to get notice out perhaps a week in advance, not just on the discussion board but to every e-mail we have on hand, to make sure everyone has ample notice. It was intended this year but an assortment of personal issues prevented us from doing so. Apologies if anyone didn't find out about it until it was too late.

This was discussed and given long consideration for this year, to the point of kicking around probable dates. Unfortunately, we have only a handful of staff and could not commit to two entire weekends.

You're right that it would be the best solution, and hopefully one we can implement in coming years.

I recall some e-mails from James Lewismoss a couple years ago about expanding the course to areas on the other side of #18 and possibly near the railroad tracks where there is a SCDOT right-of-way. What ever became of that?

The event sells out in about 12 hours.

It sells out a month and a half before it begins meaning you have that much time to do all the behind the scenes work.Player cards, figure out payout etc.

Almost all the registrations were by credit card. No repeated trips to the bank for deposits and dealing with checks. You know know how much money you;re dealing with.

Trust me when I say that there are 800+ other TD's around the world that wish they had this to deal with.

As for am and pro weekends. It works. If you're worried about staff. Usually the ams help out when the pros play and vice versa. Plus I'm sure there are folks from out of town who wouldn't mind pitching in also.

As for people not knowing in time. If you're like me, I've checked this board and the Columbia club site at least twice a day since the beginning of January in anticipation.
I canceled a business meeting yesterday just to make sure I was at the computer at 9. Folks that want to play this event know that it fills quick every year. It's up to them to make the arrangements to get in.

And a big thanks to Zonedriven for bringing Earlwood into the 21st century. Keep up the good work.

James,

I'm not real sure, in either case.

I'm not certain how firm the beyond-#18 idea was; I think it was just speculation. Chris and I spent an afternoon scoping that area out, but it's (1) pretty swampy and (2) would involve a significant-size bridge crossing the creek.

I really lost track of the other-side-of-the-tracks issue. The neighborhood association was working on a project to put and walking trail, gardens, etc., in, and to coordinate it with disc golf. We would not be able to get permission to cross the tracks so, at least for official purposes (like a tournament), it would involve walking through the neighborhood for 2 blocks (probably between holes 7 & 8) to pick up the other holes. (In casual play I'm sure people would climb across the tracks....there was once a bridge there). That parcels a little tricky with roads and the railroad....it could be perhaps 6-9 tough holes or 9-12 easy holes.

Truth is, despite any impressions to the contrary, I don't have that much to do with Earlewood any more. Stoney Hill takes up most of my time. I am (1) still the club treasurer and attend meetings and (2) the only person who does so and is on the discussion board----so I appoint myself as message board liaison and pass along what I can.

We definitely know how lucky we are to prefill. On the Saturday morning we don't have to deal with registrations, checking PDGA status, etc---just quick sign-ins, and a handful of no-shows being replaced off the waiting list.

Ed's marvellous organization and experience masks the fact that there's just a few of us and, at least at this time, most of us have outside-of-disc-golf issues that prevent us from attending two separate weekends. Perhaps next year.

I agree that their should be a Pro event and an AM event would help out a lot. This is part of the SCDGO point series yet majority of the South Carolina players, who want to play, are not able to even get in. Splitting it up with include everyone, who wanted to play and would benefit the club more as well as those looking to enjoy this tournament.

The drawback to having seperate weekends is that it makes traveling and accomodations more challenging for the participants. On the bright side, I wouldn't have to arrange for a dog sitter. Happy Day at Earlwood Chad!

davidsauls
Jan 30 2009, 03:53 PM
It is a consideration, though minor, that if we split the event then Pros & Ams who wish to travel together, can't. Until the last 2 or 3 years, before demand skyrocketed, more players were coming from farther away and we knew of some who needed this travel arrangement. Probably less of an issue these days, or less important that the people who wish to play, but can't get in.

Separate weekends would give us the option to limit each event to 72 (no fivesomes), and give some of the better advanced players the choice of playing either event. I guess someone could play both if he really wanted to.

As I mentioned before.....this was given consideration this year, and perhaps we'll be able to have split events next year.
