you dont need to, but the answer is to accumulate lots of points by going to the Bowling Green event. if you dont go there its tough to get enough points. for lots of us its easier to just wait for open registrations then write a check.

Be a current amateur member of the PDGA and pay your entry fee at the time registration for Am Worlds opens up to any member, usually in late May.

How does one qualify for AM Worlds?
You get a certain number of points (the multiplier) for each person you place ahead of in a tournament. The more people you beat, the more points. A-Tiers have a higher multiplier than B-tiers which have a higher multiplier than C-Tiers. In addition, playing Advanced has a higher multiplier than Intermediate.
Long story short: points. I don't remember exactly, but I think Advanced Men had to have 1000 points last year. (Also, there are other ways to qualisy, but this is the biggie.) There is (was) a document somewhere on the PDGA web site somewhere that spells it all out.
As has been mentioned, after the registration period for invited players has ended registration opens for all members. I don't think players have ever been turned away because it was full.

If you want to qualify on points, listen up. I'm the World's Foremost Authority on Piling Up Points. :D Seriously, my daughters and I are all getting points obelisks for 2008. These are the points pointers:
1) Play Bowling Green Ams.
2) Play in the division where you can beat the most people. It does not help to have a big multiplier if you're finishing on the last card. Or the only card in some micro-division.
3) Play Bowling Green Ams.
4) Play the big A-tiers and Majors that don't offer Intermediate. A lot of intermediates play these and you can beat most of them. Worlds, Am Nationals, the Memorial and for the rest you just have to check last year's attendance and this year's divisional plan.
5) Don't forget: Bowling Green.
6) Play a lot of tournaments.
7) Did I mention Bowling Green?

I know several Ams who play intermediate, and don't usually finish top 5, or even top 10, but they qualified for worlds because they play a ton of tournaments.

Only problem, Chuck, that's qualifiers for the 2008 events. I did a (real quick) web search but didn't find anything any more current, but I know that qualifying has already started for this year ... Savannah Open last weekend was a qualifier.

I realized that. But that link has remained the same for years so it will be where to find the info when they've finalized it for 2009.

I'm guessing they didn't have any qualifying tournaments in fall, as they did in late 2007, so you have 5 more months to qualify for this event (if the qualifying events get posted), 2.5 of which are in winter.

This is incorrect. Qualifying for AM Nats began as soon as it is ended last year in June. Many events throughout the summer and fall were qualifiers. I would email the TD (
[email protected]) and bug him to update the website.

The site was updated a while ago. The problem is most tournament directors don't schedule their tournaments until the last minute, or have to change dates due to the PDGA schedule.
Phil had a hard time with this this year.

The BG Ams is an AM national event as well, just finish in the top 1/3 of Advanced.
And get an invite to the worlds as stated above!
