I think you should split the tourney up into 2 days. Pros and Int on one day, everybody else on the other. That way we could play the lake course twice instead of playing LL woods.

Hey, glad to say I will be making this one. I have some room if someone needs a ride from Austin.
I am considering a 1 round C tier on Sunday Morning but not sure where yet. WACO???
I'll call Gary and see what I can set up
Anyone out there know if I can throw one at cedar hill? love that course
My picks would be Grapevine, Crowley or Waco but you tell me what would be the best for a one round tournament.

You would need 18 temp baskets. It's my understanding that the baskets are not in yet. There's always a huge mini at The Vet on Sunday morning.

One round C tier was a good idea by my_hero came up with a better and cheaper way of having fun Sunday morning.
What are the details on the vet mini?
my_hero
Jan 15 2009, 06:02 PM
Ha! Mini starts at 10am. Sign up @ or before 9:45am in the south parking lot. The ace pot (by then) should be somewhere ~$200, unless it's hit before then. You must be an ADGA member to shoot at the ace. Membership is $20 if that interests you.
Open $11
pro Masters $9
Ams $7
Take $2 off if you are not a member and are not contributing to the ace fund. We usually have 40-60 people there. Looking forward to seeing you. Cheers!

I'm not sure what you're talking about here, smitty. what about titledisc could possibly be any easier for the player? And how is this easier? I'm always working to improve the site (including a compete overhaul that is just now in its infancy. Any suggestions are of course welcome. unless you were just trying to be snide...
Smitty2004
Jan 27 2009, 10:16 PM
Not being snide at all. Simply go to the Dynamic Discs web-site, make 3 clicks and check out. No loging in, no passwords to remember. Plus it is a Dynamic Discs event, so I think it is cool that Jeremy is finally putting his website to use.
curt
Jan 27 2009, 11:04 PM
I would have to agree that the new site design is a little confusing. I don't remember having to log in to click on a register now button in the previous edition. I had to go all the way to the FAQ to figure out how to register for an event. (which, to be honest, is something I rarely do on website) It would be much more convenient for the player to be able to click a register for this event button and then log in.
Nothing against you guys over at titledisc, I think you're doing great work and wish you the best of luck. Just a little bit of constructive (hopefully) criticism.
baldguy
Jan 27 2009, 11:28 PM
smitty: Titledisc could be linked to just as easily as the cart that jeremy set up. plus TitleDISC is really designed for TDs that don't have their own sites or that want to be listed with a bunch of other tournaments, regardless of sanctioning.
Curt, I do appreciate the feedback. It's true that I added one step to the process, but the intent was to clean things up a bit. Many players felt that having the form on the same page made the page too big. I also had people complain about not being able to find the form there... so I dunno. I added the login feature so that people could save their player data and not have to enter it over and over again. This was a very common request from lots of players. I also have implemented forums, comments, event ratings, and blogs - all of which will require a login to use. I already had the ability for TDs to login and admin their events, but now I can add more event management features. Soon TDs and clubs will be able to create and edit their own events (including ones that aren't up for online registration - like minis). I may re-introduce the ability to sign up for an event without having to log in... I haven't decided yet. It's certainly possible :).
the new site is an overhaul, yes... but it's also a major upgrade. the platform I built it on allows for so much more to be added in the future. coming up very soon are course descriptions and reviews. that will enable players to do all sorts of cool things related to the courses. What you see now is just the beginning. TitleDISC isn't just for registration any more :)
Curt, if you or anyone else has some feedback like this please send me an email or log into the new site and post it on the forums. I want TitleDISC to be as good as it can be. Your input will make that possible.

This was a great weekend. It just amazes me that Rusco can get 195 players to come out for a 1 day event. For the first time at one of these events, I just sat back on the steps of the Double Dizzle RVizzle and watched what was going on. I saw people laughing and enjoying themselves. Isn't that why we really play this game? I never hear a single person complain about the event, and they are always happy and pumped for the next event. The dude is taking events to the next level, just to bad that most of the people in his home state don't know or understand what is going on. He host the best event in Kansas, and we never have to worry about turning people away. I hope that some of you Texans can make the trip to the sunflower state for the Glass Blown Open, I guarantee you will add it to one of your cannot miss list. I love playing in Texas and am counting downl the days until the next trip.
Thanks a ton Texas for letting us invade your territory and not shooting us.

Super D here just wanting to say thanks for an unforgettable weekend. I played my heart out in ADV and some how managed to BLOW IT UP in the end once again. The LAKE has it in for us Lefty's. I will be back once again to regain my confidence at the LAKE. Still can't believe Nick didn't take it away after that awsome first round! Thanks to everyone on my first card for witnessing my wonderful putting skills. Who needs a drive when you can crush a putt from 60-90 feet out.
BIG thanks to the DD crew for showing us how it is done! I hope you will have some 1080's next time around.
Another BIG thanks to all the locals for being so cool! Dallas is a breeding ground for exceptional disc golfers.
Sean Kitchens and Miles - send me a PM some time. I see you guys are going to the Memorial in March. I'll be out there with a few friends from TX (Keith Russom and the Avalos Brothers).
And to all you OPEN players, watch out this year for ProPutt aka Keith Russom. He just played his first official open tournament for his first official year as an open player and the SOB cashed! Call it what you want but this kid is going places, literally!

Well, after a couple days I have finally come back to my senses! After a tournament, I usually fall in to what I call a TD hangover. This hangover was previously from being completely exhausted and sleep deprived; now it is on somewhat of a different diagnosis-slight depression. I have so much fun at these events hanging out with friends and making new friends that I don't want to come home and get back to the grind of what really keeps DD operational.
I can't say enough good things about the players who made it to the event. 196 players pre-registered on Friday though the website, phone, or mail is something that I would have never dreamed of happening at a DD event. I did my best to keep up with the emails and phone calls but there were so many that I lost track somewhere along the way; I even had to increase the cell phone plan to accommodate for the constant phone calls.
There were a few minor problems that happened in the morning that won't happen again. I apologize again to Dakota Mason for changing his starting position and also to Gregory Mosley who was not able to play with the right grouping of players according to score because his score was wrote down incorrectly. Unfortunately we are all human and mistakes will be made from time to time at almost every tournament.
After each trip on the way home we keep ourselves awake by talking about what we can do better at the next event. We decided that we need to take a few extra minutes to split the pro ties in to separate envelopes and also decided that something different needs to happen for the amateur payout. For the next event (with a large amateur turnout), we are going to have the players go through the line according to place. So all first place finishers will go first, 2nd, 3rd, and so on. We tried this in Crowley but it didn't work because we didn't form a line or have someone in charge to officially 'police' players though the line. I think this will be a good idea and help avoid the 'mad dash' to the line. As Smitty said, "Someone could get trampled and die in those few seconds." I think he is right and think a change is necessary. We also thought about pre-packaged discs for payout but I think more players would like to pick out exactly what they want instead of getting a bag full of plastic that they might not use.
If anyone else has other suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. Post them on here or send me a PM. The only way these are going to get better is with the help and input of as many different opinions as possible.
Again, I want to thank all the players who made this happen and for all the positive remarks that you guys are leaving on the discussion board. Without you, these events wouldn't be anything and I truly mean that. They also couldn't happen if I didn't have such an amazing event staff who are all players and all sacrifice their playing ability to make sure these things run as smoothly as they do. It isn't easy to tally up 195 score cards, put them in the computer, shuffle the cards, grab lunch, sell merch and get prepared for the next round. Some where in there they have to skip out on one of those steps and it is usually getting ready for the next round.
I am just trying to give back what I would want if I were to play in a tournament. Seeing so many happy players is where the true joy is in it for me. Think about where these things are going to be once we get some more sponsors on board!!!! I know that sell-out attendance is something that will catch the eye of potential sponsors. A $100-$200 sponsorship here and there will really start to add up. This event had a $150 cash sponsorship from Chris Tyler (Super Nice Guy), $100 cash sponsorship from Jeff Ohnesorge, and Innova CFR plastic! Sell these events to potential sponsors, get a $100-$200 sponsorship for the next one and see these events take off in to the next level where they fill up a week in advance and everyone goes home with more than they ever would have expected from a B-Tier. Right now for the May 9th DD B-Tier in Lewisville, Old Man is on board with a $250 sponsorship, Lloyd Sitkoff -Try Tone records is on board to be a sponsor with more in the works! These events are going to step up to the next level because of the support that you have shown and I couldn't be more excited!
See you in McKinney Feb 28th for the Harmony Hill Huk and March 1st for the Towne Lake Pro/Am. Both are DD events, both are B-Tiers, and both are expected to fill well in advance. Lets make this another one for the record books! Registrations are coming in steadily for the HHH and registration for Towne Lake will be posted shortly.

I have thought about doing payout by place finished in division and agree that it would be a great idea! Even though I might always be the first in line :oI also agree it sucks to get paid out in a pre picked fashion! Maybe if you dont post payout and call each player in order of place and hand a voucher then send them into the line. Otherwise you will have a mess getting people in line in order. Besides it would be kind of nice to give a round of applause for anyone that placed in there respective division! Thanks again and in the future I will try to be patient or place better :D

I would recommend doing the AM payout just the opposite last to first. They guy who only gets to spend $20 will be in and out of there faster then the guys who is spending $200. also the 1st place guy (bagger Usually) will be scooping up all the prime plastic which he probably does not need anyways. Since most AMS around here have garage's full of -plastic :D

Good call on backwards, but still tough to get 100+ players in a nice line :) I fully agree though as I cash at most events a play (not in bagger place) and just wait until the whole line is gone
I have more plastic than I can use, as do most of us and I will never leave a tournament that I didn't cash it. We should all stay and congratulate the winners and others...since we spent the weekend or day golfing together.
Now that DD is running pretty well with their website and ebay sales also...I have always wanted to see a TD that would accept a players payout voucher at their online store or website.
Do you currently offer that or thought about the feasability of something like that...during the TX10 days, (thanks to being tight with Chris) I just continued to roll my payout from event to event and just cashed out one day that we were both at the same place and he had some time.
Online may be a good way to go as many events as you will have through the year

Doing payouts using online stores is possible. The question is whether or not it is possible with the eBay store. Basically at the end of an event you'd have to have a staffer free to give a coupon ID to people that want this option. After the event is over the staff would do a quick input of the coupon ID along with the value.
We'll have to look into this in the future. :) I don't know if it is possible with eBay stores, but if we get a more integrated store script it could be very possible.

I like the feedback here. I also like the idea of going in reverse order but if you got first in the event wouldn't that make you kind of upset that you got punished for doing so well? Maybe I'm looking in to this and the player doesn't really care because he won the event. I could also just give away larger prizes for first like a traveler or sport basket and say, see you later!
The online voucher thing is a good idea as well but this could create headaches for me. Also, since payout is figured on the tournament pricing of the plastic, these prices would have to be consistent whether online or at the event. We could make out vouchers that would be able to be used at future events for those who have to leave as well.
Keep the ideas coming!

rusco, im not sure how many events you are running this year and their proximity to each other, but in columbus we use vouchers for the ams, they are good for the calendar year at any of our events for merch. they have the tournament, place, amount, and date on them so that we can add them up just like we do the cash and know how much is still out there. this makes the post awards dash for plastic, easier on both sides of the table, and people can save up for bigger and better things if they wish. it works really well for us, and the players are all happy with it. we run 10+ events in the same city in a year, so even if they are from out of town they will probably have a chance to redeem it in the future if they want.
order is always a crapshoot because some think am1 deserves first pick, but some think that am4 needs it the most. if there is an easy way to go from last to first, but give the first guys a chance at merch first that would be ideal, sometimes too much of a headache.
i find myself just waiting until the next event when the club makes another order and there arent 40 other people to deal with. if the players that place higher, and are announced last, are smart they will do the same... and wont complain.

How about allow everyone to pick only one item at a time. If they can pick more items, they need to go to the back of the line first.
Or, split the merch into two sections. Have a smaller group of the top winners go to one table and the rest of the bottom winners go to the other table. Once one group is finished, both tables open up.
Or, have a single queue of people and two tables. Allow only 2 people at a time per table and alternate people from the queue to each table as the people leave. Limit people to 2 minutes or they have to go back to the end of the line.
Lots of ideas to try!! I wish I could have played this tournament Rusco. But I was busy snowboarding. :DSee you guys soon.

Hey Jeremy,
Your Tourny's are great, and all the work ya'll do behind the scenes pays off with smooth start times and not bad back ups on Tee boxes. The other TD that I thought ran a smooth gig was John "Gimp" in Houston with Team Disaster. And he had issues with Payout lines for Disc. Matt H might remember more of what he did, But i thought when he realized the line always backing up and becoming a pain. I remember for 1 he had about 4 volunteers he trusted watching payout with only 2 of those people handling money. Also he had the tables where two lines could pass from either side. So it doubled the speed of the line. I dont quite remember in what order he did payout..... I think he made Pros wait a while so as to start the pay out line for Am's.
But with 100+ people rushing a shopping line, not much can be done. Stay organized and try to anticipate the rush with volunteers who have authority, not just watching, but being in charge. Gimps helpers were "barky" and made people listen, but the lines ran smooth.
Just some ideas, hope it helps.
But Jeremy and Team DD are doing a great Job and I would vote you TD of the Year....

Rusco,
For Am payout, you should give vouchers for merch at your online store.

I've been working on ideas for online payout for years... it's hard to make it work. The biggest problem is tournament pricing versus online pricing. Plus, online orders need shipping, so that complicates things even more. I've designed and built at least a dozen trial-run sites that could handle it... but none of those models was perfect. It's not as easy as it seems.

Josh knows what he's talking about. Vouchers seem so easy but they aren't. Payout is calculated based on the pricing of the merch at the tournament. Most of the time these tournament prices are slightly higher than the online prices (but less than the online prices with shipping). The 30 extra minutes that it takes to shuffle everyone through the line is easy compared to the extra hours that it would take to fill all the online voucher orders. We bring so much stuff to the tournaments to keep everyone happy and to ensure that everyone will have a wide variety of things to choose from whether you are at the front of the line or at the very end.
I think all TD's who are reading this are appreciative for all the suggestions and feedback on how we can make this process better for everyone so keep em coming!

I would still love to see a tourney give all the AMs, a players pack worth the price of their entry. That way all the AM players at the event would get something back, not just the top 1/3 who win all the stuff all the time. They could pick this up when the checked in for the event.
Then they would be playing for a trophy and points.

Feb 06 2009, 10:03 AM
some tournaments do that... see the Memorial for a great example. I think it works well for a few events per year, but most ams still want the opportunity to win a bunch of cool stuff. This is especially true when payouts are high and baskets, bags, and other big-ticket items are available in payout.
Just like DD, I try to make sure that my players have a great selection no matter where they are in line. Ladies first is a good rule, but beyond that I think too many people would get their feelers hurt if you let one group go ahead of another.
I generally have no problem letting players pick up their payout at a later event, or even meet me somewhere for casual golf and get it then. It adds a bit of paperwork, but it's not as much of a headache as it would be to try and get all that stuff put into a database (so it could be referenced by a website).

I am really appriciative of the info considering my tournaments last year were not focused on payout, rather to have good competition and a chance to have good ratings to boost the year end scores.
Now that Waterloo Disc Golf will be doing my payouts and I will not be playing my own tournaments I need this sort of coorespondence to perfect this years events.
The only idea I could come up was to have all out-of-towners pick and go first, announce the ace and pro standings. That way they can get home at a reasonable time. Meanwhile the AMs should take this time to write down what they want for payout. Especially on Sunday's. Next I would have the ADV division pick out in placing order, from 1st to last place cash. Since there are less people that usually get paid out in ADV this would start the line being small. Then drill down to the Rec which will have less value to pick with and more in line.
If you have a good staff, an order form could be submitted to a staff member for them to find their request considering they already know where most of the plastic is. (I always know what I want before I get in line.) So while some are picking because they are indecisive, the others will have their order picked and brought over to them.
and that's my two cents

We ran our event in Abilene that way a few years ago. We gave the Am's a players pack that was worth 200% of their entry fee...plus 2 free meals. I think its a very cool thing to be able to give EVERY Am some good stuff right off the bat, just for signing up. I ran our event more normally this year mainly to let Discrazy benefit from the payouts and support his efforts in this region, but personally I think no payouts for Am's should be the way to go EVERYWHERE. I understand how and why Am payouts started and continued...and Am's are so spoiled on it now that you couldnt reverse that mind set very easily. However it is encouraging to see a very well known tournament like The Memorial handling Am payouts in this manner.
DD events are starting to remind me of the Texas 10 series in the way it has grown and become a popular, well respected company and set of events. Looks like your doing something right....keep it up!! I hope I can make one of your events this year.

AM payouts with 100% or 200% of players entry fee? That's like playing football and not keeping score and everyone wins...For me a players pack would be a souvernir for the tournament..Then when you place you get what you EARNED...More satisfaction in the accomplishment..I understand the wait at getting your stuff...Just have some patience...Those who rush probably just miscalculated how much beer the needed... :)

Well I think charging 20-30 for AM divisions with a disc in one pack (Int) and a disc and shirt in another (adv) would work just fine if you give the top 3-5 trophies.

Do trophies really mean much to anyone??? I mean dont they end up in a box in the garage anyways. I think most ams would agree that they would rather take that money put toward trophies and purchase something useful for themselves...maybe something they can throw or something they can throw into. Also, not many like to get a pre-picked package that contains disc they would never even throw to their dogs. I think that the entries should go toward a payout that the winners get to choose and waiting to get that pick is just apart of getting that option. It is always better to let the players choose where their money goes, instead of determining for them what % of their money they get.
DD does such a good job, every TD should be required to attend one of Rusco's touraments kind of like a annual seminar to learn how to do things.

I have quite a few REAL cool trophies that I keep around. As long as they are cool I don't think there would be a problem and what is wrong with getting to pick a disc, getting a free lunch, and having a chance to win a trophy for $20 seems like a good deal to me.
At least it is better than paying $50 in ADV when you likely will walk away with nothing.

"Do trophies really mean much to anyone???"
Speaking from the experience of having run dozens of PDGA tournaments and having actually surveyed our players more than once on this topic,
Michigan and Illinois amateurs tend to like cool, inexpensive, player-made disc golf themed trophies. Our dyed disc trophies and basket sculpture trophies have been fairly well received. They are less receptive of payout sucking professionally made plaques and "bowling trophies" even if the little man on top is throwing an ultimate lid.
Pros are 50/50 on trophies and there is no relationship between a pro's coolness factor and his trophy-cash preference. Mark Ellis and Kirk Haggadone, for example, both have 1000 rated coolness, and are polar opposites on trophy preferences.
One of my TD-happiest moments was when a pro showed up for a trophy-only-only tournament totally unaware of the format. He was disappointed and getting ready to leave. "Then he said, "Wait, those are the trophies? O.k., I'm in."

The other thing I meant to add was, I won't play a sanctioned tournament if I know there are no trophies, or if i do play it, I'll make a trophy for my division. One of my favorite trophies is one I commissioned my daughter to make for the Open division at a small unsanctioned series thing I was playing. I won it. My only Open win ever.

The only problem here is what tournament nowadays is there a $20 entry? Also, when is the lunch ever worth it? I could dig on lunch and a cool trophy if they were worth it, but a crappy lunch and a piece of wood is rarely worth what they take out of everyones entry.

No entry is $20 because the AMs are playing for too much merch. You can cut the price in half if you do player's packs and trophies.

The IOSeries offers a $20 trophy-only entry fee that gets you the player pack, PDGA points and ratings, CTPs [we do a LOT of CTPs] and of course, a shot at the trophies for your division. It is an optional entry fee. You can pay $30 and be in for prizes.
We rarely do lunch because most of our park districts won't let us without a food service license. So our lunch is usually worth the price: nothing for nothing!
