Let's look at the team...there are 4 reasons why this team is better than last years team

1. JJ is playing great golf right now. Hofmann, while a great golfer, struggled during this event last year. I'm not saying JJ is better than Hofmann or Hofmann is better than JJ, I'm saying that JJ will play better than Hofmann did last year.
2. Some of the worst golf I've ever played was at VTI last year. I'm starting to get my confidence back and I know I will perform better
3. Love to Kirk to death, but Carlton is a HUGE improvement over Kirk in masters.
4. Terry Gallops is the hidden jewel in the tournament. He is the best non wiggins amatuer disc golfer in NC right now. His style of play is PERFECT for this course. He will be dominant.

Team RADL getting the jug!

I think its safe to say that JJ will give RADL a huge boost as compared to myself. I've put myself on probation for my poor play last year. Tizzle was on the team last year so he's not replacing me. Stronger then last year? Yes. Will they win? We'll find out in March.

Team Spotsy VTI Team Tryouts will be held on Sunday 22 February at 10 AM at Hawk Hollow. We will play all 27 holes, more than likely split it up (play 15 holes, break, play 12 or play 12 holes, break, play 15 holes)

Requirements for tryouts:

Member of Spotsylvania Disc Golf Club (Dues are $15 and must be paid prior to start of tryout round)
In order to raise money for the club there will be a $10 fee to participate in the tryout which also must be paid prior to start of tryout.
No payout upon completion of the tryout.

I am assuming rules for VTI 2009 will remain the same as they did last year. If that is the case:

At least 6 of the 8 male players must be from the Spotsylvania / Fredericksburg area. Additionally the masters division is age protected so at least 2 of the eight players must be at least 40 years of age on or before 31 December 2009. (So this means if there are not at least two players of masters age that qualify in the top 8 positions, then the top two masters players regardless of how they finish on the day of the tryout will be on the team.)

The following players are "grandfathered" as previous members of team Spotsy: Lugo, Todd, Clements, Hasnain. "Grandfathered" players means that if they decide to tryout for the team, then they are considered a local player, it does not mean that they are on the team - they still would have to compete and win a spot on the team.

the following was sent to captain's this morning:

Virginia Team Invitational 2009

March 28-29 Hawk Hollow DGC, Spotsylvania,VA

(in addition there will be a One and Done singles tournament Friday 3/27 pros $20 ams $10- 18 holes, players may tee anytime between 1 and 3 p.m as long as they have a minimum of a threesome to play in)

Beef:
HHome
PADE (defending champs)
Free State Flyers (Baltimore)
NOVA
Seneca
Newport News

Dairy:
Cowbell (Charlotte)
Unitty
RADL
Calvert
Spotsy
Blue Ridge

Entry fee is $40 per player. Payout will remain the same as in previous years. (First and second in each division, first and second overall, individuals with best record per seeding per division.)

Tee time will be 10:00 on Saturday and 9:00 on Sunday. Format will be the same as last year with divisional play followed by 2 teams from each division in playoffs. Tie breakers are head to head first followed by total individual wins, and thirdly holes remaining in individual wins.

The last place team from each division will play off against one another for the right to return in 2010. The loser of this match will be eliminated for 2010 and be placed back on the waiting list (likely 7-8 years). HHome Team and Team Spotsy are EXEMPT from this requirement. Should either of these teams finish last in their respective division the 5th place team will be placed in the elimination match.

Teams will consist of the following:
4 Open
2 Masters
2 Advanced (or pro with player rating at or beneath 955- see below*)
1 Lady

Ratings will be based on the late January update so what you've got now is it.

* Players registered with the PDGA as pros may play am at VTI up to the 955 cut-off. Players registered as ams may be of any rating. Players who have re-classified from pro to am will be subject to individual review. Players who have accepted cash in pro divisions and are rated above 955 will be ineligible regardless of reclassification.

6 of the 8 male players must be from the geographic area/course represented by the team or be grandfathered in by virtue of competing in VTI 2005.

Grandfathered Player List (only includes players without a direct tie to the teams geographic region as those players from each given region are eligible either way)
Home: Ellis, Bonday, Mullins, Zadareky, Hysell
Spotsy: Lugo, Todd, Clements, Hasnain
Seneca: DeLeonardis
UniTTy: Williams, Sheffield, Reiser, Cahill, Buono
Baltimore: Jernigan, Mela
NOVA: Sonderfan

If you have questions about players eligibility contact me.

***New Substitution policy***- Each team may make one sub during the course of the weekend. Subs may not be players who have competed for other teams during the event. Players must finish the weekend in the slot they began it. Contact me if you need clarification.

Each teams coach seeds their own players within division. A match consists of each player on one team playing a 9 hole match against the player of their seed on the opposing team. Players gain one point for their team by winning a match and point for tying. Team with the most points wins the match.

I will also get team shirts done once again- cost will likely be roughly $8 per short sleeve t-shirt, $10 per long sleeve t-shirt, and $25 per sweatshirt They will bear your team name on the back in athletic style print with a large 09 beneath and some variation on the attached VTI design on the front. Deadline to order garments will be March 12.

Shirt colors available will be: white, ash gray, sand, light blue, and gold.
No choice will be given this year on ink colors due to the nature of the design.

We will also have lunch available at the course- Vegan Rays excellent smoked pork BBQ- current plan is sandwiches will be $3 each or 2/$5.

Just curious about somethings...

Are subs allowed for any reason including player A doesn't want to play so they put his sub in or the sub has a better chance of beating a particular player? Or does it have to be injury, illness, emergency, etc?

Is the sub rule like basketball (the player being subbed for may return) or like baseball (the subbed player is no longer allowed to play)?

TIA

they were originally allowed because ed w. beat up schwebby at the hotel and steve j. came up to take his spot on sunday. also were used by the hhome team last year as neither hysell nor i was healthy enough to play the whole weekend. (hell, i wasn't healthy enough to play the whole day)

sub may be for any reason- i'm not going to be put in the spot of judging what is "valid" and what is not.

once subbed for you are done for the weekend- to go back in would be a second substitution and each team is allowed one.

since the pdga is updating ratings prior to the event this year (hasn't been until april in the past) i am allowing teams to go by EITHER the january update or the march one to determine am player eligibility for pros and former pros. in other words, if your rating is 950 in january and 960 on the update 2 weeks prior to the event you are eligible, likewise if it's 960 in january and 950 on the update prior to the event you are eligible. 955 or below- one update or the other.

Hey! It's tomorrow and you haven't replied yet. Trepasso hasn't called me back either. You Virginia guys hate me. Where is Chris Hysell. I want to rub his big old fat fuzzy head. And another thing, does Glenry still carry that big old cup around with him all the time?

you NC guys are so needy... :p
hysell's fuzzy head will be at the vti.
i did not notice that glenry had his cup last time i saw him, although he's beginning to look like he may have swallowed it.

I meant just ask Glenn. He will tell you. Glenn is VERY old (just kidding-I hope I am that competitive in my later 50's) and his old cup was VERY heavy. So heavy that he doesn't carry it anymore. Rob as far as his smaller cup being half empty or half full, that depends on what hole Glenn is on and how far away is Kelly's car! :D

Zilla
Mar 19 2009, 06:06 PM
I think he'll tell you its half empty, that way he can fill up it again

My favorite Glenry memory is at a Duck golf one year. After lunch we went out to our hole, I think it was a temp hole out near the entrance to the park where you threw out of the woods across an open field. Glenry sat down, with his cup, and was not feeling too well. I noticed that he had picked a plant to chew on while sitting in the shade (4th of July weekend). As I looked closer I realized that the chew stick still had leaves on it. Poison Ivy leaves. I brought it to Glenry's attention and he said, very nonchalantly, I'm not allergic to poison ivy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You big old fuzzy, you.I can't wait to hang out with everybody there. I am looking forward to match play, but more looking forward to hanging out and catching up on old times and new times. See you soon and get the forecast downgraded from those 50% chances of rain. 2 days before our tourney we had a 30% chance and got over an inch. Grrrr!

unfortunately a member of the freestate flyers had a death in the family. we need to replace him. if you can make it this weekend, let me know (pm your phone # to me). we're about ready to go with the highest rated available player. you can be from anywhere because we have an open exempt slot. we have a few local takers but we'd like to get the best player available.

i have a cabin with some space available so we can put you up fri/sat nights.

free food, beer and lodging if you are over 990!

Thanks John for hosting such a great tournament!!!

Thanks to the Spotsy & HHome crew that get the course ready every year!!

Vegan Ray's BBQ was also a big thumbs up!

Although the course was a bit sloppy, the rain missed us all weekend! The course was playing as tough as ever. Sunday the wind picked up a little bit, and made things really interesting.

Great job with the BBQ Vegan - it made it a lot easier not having to leave the course this year.

Thanks to all my RADL teammates for the fun and laughs!

thanks guys.
congrats crowntown and shreds.
congrats spotsy on your first win- team gets stronger every year.

i will be going fishing for discs this evening and let you know what i find.

once again i will say that this event is by far the most gratifying to run of any i have ever dealt with (which has gotten to be a lot). when i left last night there was not one bit of stray trash anywhere- everyone should be proud of that- the disc golfer's continued conscientious use of the facility is one of the things which allows hawk hollow to be what it is.

thanks for the tourney, john. ray, the bbq was great as was the slaw.

there's no other preasure like the walk of shame to play out. i'm happy that baltimore will return stronger than ever next year and hopeful to be a part of it. the cup will return to MD sooner than later.

Virginia hospitality is incredible. Thanks to Mike Trepasso for allowing so many people to trample all over the Grange and to camp and sleep everywhere we could find. Thanks to you John for the Hawk Hollow course and the VTI event. Schwebby told me it was his favorite course and I understand why. I am sorry I waited so long to enjoy your masterpiece. The creeks and fences made for lots of exciting shots with high risk/reward consequences. The terrain covered the entire spectrum of uphill and downhill shots, open and wooded holes, and my legs will remember them for quite some time. The format was the most fun I have had at a tournament. Even thought is was a competition, it was like playing in 7 different events over the weekend in a very laid back atmosphere. I met tons of new people and reconnected with many others. Charlotte's hat is off to you and your crew. We had a great time in Virginia. If only we could have a little bit more wind on Sunday next year! ;)

Great time had by team RADL, for sure, just don't like being "edged out" of the playoffs again...

Amazing course, and the closest I have played to the "Wild turkey open" Radley course some of us played a few years ago.

I would only improve on the event by (somehow) making it a 3 day deal. Reason being the "awesomeness" of the whole thing goes by too fast.

Congrats to all that won and played well, and particularly Tim Barr, whos demolition of me has inspired an adjustment to my training intensity (I figure I better start actually practicing vs. just thinking about it)

Thanks John, Hometeam, and Team Spotsy for all you did and do,

Mike Gordon - RADL
