Thanks to Steve for finally having it when I wasn't running my own Event or putting it the weekend before Worlds. :D

Even though I'm 1 year away from being able to play in the elder division, I'm hoping to make the cut by playing 2 solid rounds, so the trip will be worth the massive expense, by getting to play the third round.

Your math is correct with what is posted in print at the website, but with myself and at least 2 others signed up it shows there are 75 spots left "in stock" - so maybe some creative hysteria to make sure that it sells out in 24 hours. :D

I wouldn't worry too much, you will find someone once the reg list fills. The one thing you will want to plan for is to get there on Tuesday, so you get the full experience. In terms of $$ you really don't spend any money while there, except for food(plenty of cheap options within 5min too). There is a lot provided, and always some bonus extras(like the Z Xtremes and made the cut got paid T shirts)

btw I am refusing to let that donkey vegan ray win the poker tournament again this year :D

ChrisWoj

You mean you're going to sit there and watch as I win the poker tournament, Luke? ;) I'll make the cut, get paid at the poker table while I'm there haha!

But yeah, I agree I want to get there good 'n early. I really hope to leave straight from the Kingston in Norwalk on Sunday and head straight for Massachusetts. I'd love to make the most of the opportunity to play this event. I'm already pumped and I can't imagine thats going to wane at all over the next months as I wait to play it!

Happy 2009 everyone!

Don't worry, it will be well worth the trip no matter how many rounds you end up playing. Last year it was wet, I lost my favorite disc, and I still had the best time I've ever had at any tourney ever! I can't wait to get back up there and try to find that Rhyno again. Hopefully it washed in a few feet towards the shore so I can find it with my toes.

Used to be whole, then 2%.
I'll get a gallon tomorrow,(later today actually) and time myself during halftime of the Dolphin game.
I haven't done it in like 25 years or so, but used to do it all the time in my teens and 20's when milk was still under a buck a gallon. Switched to Pepsi when milk got expensive, and never looked back. I have only had probably 2-3 gallons combined of milk since then, mostly at the breakfast buffets in Vegas.

- They have high speed internet in every room and a business office
- They have free local calls and complimentary USA Today
- They have an amazing free breakfast spread (waffles, yogurt, eggs, cereals, juices, etc.)
- Rooms can have two doubles or one queen bed

StevenDodge

I talked to Jason about camping at Pyramids and he said, "no campers" (meaning people in tents).

Maple Hill will have limited camping. I need to talk with Tom and Karen and determine what the word "limited" means. Anyone camping at MH needs to be unseen by neighbors and the road and be pretty quiet (or at least not heard by neighbors) after 10.

Regarding places to stay, we have a good deal with the host hotel this year ($80 / night, up to four people to a room) and we are getting a list of folks that can put people up. I expect to be sending out an email with more details early next week.

Yes, you've got the gist right. Folks in off the Five Spots Wait List will have two weeks to complete their registration. At which point I will henpeck for one week. After that, they will be bumped to the bottom of the wait list.

So far, 43 unclaimed reserved spots and 41 on the wait list.

Matt,

you made it by 24 hours and 12 minutes. Folks need to register by June 1st.

It was odd the first year we put in a deadline like this, because we MEANT before June 1st, but it became clear that the wording was ambiguous and we had to err on the side of caution and give folks the extra day. Now, we finally mean the ambiguity and celebrate our misapplied nomenclature.

PS. Less than 18 hours to reserve your spot, unless you are on the west coast.

From what I understand, he won the A-tier up here the year before we ran the first MSDGC. I had a similar dark horse thought, especially with the way he is playing right now.

Just curious, how many holes/pins/tees have been or are being changed for this year?

And yeah, Tyler should play well up there. Will he throw a spike-hyzer over the trees on #3? The thing with Tyler is that he has such a solid drive, combine that with great putting, and the ability to throw giant spike-hyzers with ease, and the only time it ever looks like he is even trying is when he is putting.

Can I get another 2 on Hole 6 again this year? Kind of weird looking at the stats from last year, I think that hole was only birdied during the 2nd round and there were a handful of them. Crazy.

StevenDodge
Jul 01 2009, 12:11 AM
Only three holes are slated to change for this year's Vibram Open:

Hole 1: We have pushed the pin 60 feet back and into the woods. To card the birdie three will now require the necessary distance and enough accuracy to put you in the opening with a look into the woods.

Hole 3: We have pushed the pin back about 80 feet. Drives that fade left early can no longer expect to card the three. A conservative drive will give you a tricky up and down for the three. An aggressive drive (successfully executed) will give you a fairly easy three.

Hole 15: Currently leaning towards using the old Hole 15 layout (which is currently the White layout). This is the 305' straight shot over the laurel valley. IMO, a much better shot and challenge.

ChrisWoj
Jul 02 2009, 06:01 PM

My hope for Patriot Act 2: http://www.campaignforliberty.com/

Hi Mikey,

Great to see your fingers inaction again. (no one knows if that was a typo or not, not even me.)

The Five Spots Wait List is as follows:

Derek Hopkins (Five Spots - 01) 31966 Yes 983 Carmichael CA USA
Ruben Alaniz (Five Spots - 02) 31881 Yes 985 Santa Cruz CA USA
Jeremy Koling (Five Spots - 03) 33705 Yes 994 Charlotte NC USA
Buddy Tritt (Five Spots - 04) 29535 Yes 976 Charlotte NC USA
Patrick Blazek (Five Spots - 05) 25325 Yes 1004 Palmer Lake CO USA
Patrick Barnett (Five Spots - 06) 31866 Yes 954 South Glastonbury CT USA
The Chad Francis (Five Spots - 07) 30662 Yes 935 Centennial CO USA
Jeff Cahill (Five Spots - 08) 20090 Yes 1002 Norwalk CT USA
Daemon Stahlin (Five Spots - 09) 24185 Yes 982 Ann Arbor MI USA
Erik Pleso (Five Spots - 10)
Jeff Chauvin (Five Spots - 11)
Chris Vilmorin (Five Spots - 12) 17519 Yes 1017 Chula Vista CA USA
Eric Kevorkian (Five Spots - 13)
Henry Childres (Five Spots - 14) 24834 Yes 972 Charlotte NC USA

If someone drops out, then the folks at the top of this list will move in to the tournament. Anyone left on this list will be in the Five Spots tournament on Thursday (http://www.maplehillopen.com/players.html#fivespots). The five top finishers in the Five Spots tourney will take the final five spots in the tournament. My guess is that three or four of these folks will get in off the wait list, a few of those not in will not come to compete in the five spots and we will have 10 or so people playing in the Five Spots tourney.

Never have been there - is later tee times better, same, or worse than mornings tee offs? - discounting the sleep part - is there more wind? If so, better for me - Is it a drier course? If So, better for me -and if nothing else at least knowing if I play like crap I only have to get up early 1 day. :) - well that's also better for me.

So to sum it up - WHOOOO HOOOOO!!

See everyone in a few weeks - I've got Worlds this week and weekend, TD'ing 2 Events next Saturday and Sunday then flying to Baaston on the following Thursday - It's gonna be a GREAT 3 weeks of Disc Golf!

Later tee times should yield a dryer course, but you can probably also count on more wind as well. Although many of the holes are not affected that much by wind (4, 6, 7, 9, 14, 15, 16 are all fairly well protected by woods)

So I just spent a long weekend in Maine and Bob, the fellow that put together the live coverage last year - including following the lead card on Saturday - has developed an amazing live coverage page. It will feature

- One live video feed covering the lead card
- One live video feed with hole reviews, Billy Crump commentary, and player interviews
- Live scoring coverage of the top cards and standings in real time
- Tabbed viewing of PDGA & NEFA discussion boards
- One click access to Twitter and Facebook updates

Tell everyone you know. The Vibram Open will be setting a new bar for live disc golf coverage and you will be able to access it all at

The mad scientist is creating yet another more deadly potion. SWEET! Let's get some multi-angle action on the DVD this year, as well.

On another note, looks like I'll be carrying both the VP (floppy rubber) and the Summit (X-Link firm) in my bag for the foreseeable future. Tested the Summit extensively all last week in western NC & quite like it for point-and-shoot approaches (as long as it's dry), as it holds pretty much any line very gracefully all the way to the ground. A little slippery when caught in a tornado-ish downpour, but what isn't, I suppose. Firm plastic just doesn't work for putting for me, but I'm sure there will be those who love the easy release & predictable flight of this disc for that purpose. My kingdom for a floppy rubber version . . .

Nice!!

Blackberries are in full bloom at Knob Hill and Moraine. Too bad the black raspberries are done :(

We have a patch of 500+ high brush blueberries near my house, guess I'll just have to pick some to bring up with me.

Those blueberries at Maple Hill were such a nice treat last year.

I hope you get the live video issues resolved, but with that broadcast, the live scoring, the scoring system on the website (that compares everyone's round with the field averages, etc.), you're blowing worlds away! This is how disc golf should be covered!

Defending 3X PDGA World Champion Val Jenkins got off to a rough start with a double bogey 6 on the treacherous 760' pro par four starting hole#1, while Sarah Stanhope took a par 4. Through five holes, Sarah has continued her hot start and now leads both Elaine and Val.

As for the North Carolina thing? The years of TONS of GREAT players in NC is over, There used to be a lot of GREAT players in NC but most of them are in Masters, even GM and there are some REAL LEGENDS in NC. Now there is only a handful, obviously Swebbie is and will always be great, MJ is great, but after that there are just a bunch of really GOOD golfers.

Had a GREAT Time in my first visit there, and I will be waiting at Midnite on JAN 1st to sign up as a Grandmaster for the 2010 VIBRAM OPEN - where I may be able to make the cut. :)

There is nothing quite like it anywhere I have been - the Events in Virginia are a close second.

The only thing I wish would have been different - especially for those without Internet access this weekend - was that there would have been a mention or moment of silence for Tim's passing, instead of seeing it on the home page as a blurb that will get buried under the Vibram Open links when I arrived back home today.

It was certainly sad that NO ONE I spoke with this entire weekend even mentioned it when he passed on Friday Morning - something should have been said as the players were getting their tee times or have it posted at the shack, or at least afterwards before the side action games that evening to acknowledge one of the kindest, warm hearted and greatest MEN in Disc Golf, whom treated probably 50-75% (probably more) of the players that were at the Vibram Open with kindness and generousity whenever he would see them.

Sorry to him go, and I'm VERY GLAD I got to see him again at Worlds.

Rest in peace Tim!

Your Friend Always,
Keith

Thanks for the GREAT Writeups and updates all weekend Jeff!!!

The work you and Gentry did with the scoring with all the scorecards being updated was first class! The scorers and videographers being all over the course during the Event was something ALL top Events should aspire to.

I'm glad to see something was said/done about Tim, and I'm just sorry I wasn't there to be a part of it.

It was great seeing friends I hadn't seen in a while, and it was outstanding to finally get to play another round with B O B and it was disappointing to make the errors on the course that kept me from playing another round with him or the other friends I had, or had just met while there this weekend.

NEXT YEAR - Year of the Grandmaster!!!

Scooter, if tournament disc golf for you is all about return on your investment and a money-making proposition (and we know it is) then with possibly the exception of the USDGC, there is no better tournament on the schedule than the Vibram Open. Using your example from the Worlds discussion thread:

Barry: 1st place for $2500/161 throws = $15.50 per shot
Nikko: 2nd place for $2000/168 throws = $11.90 per shot
Uli: 3rd place for $1600/169 throws = $9.47 per shot
Jerm: 4th place for $1300/171 throws = $7.60 per shot
10th place: $680/177 throws = $3.84 per shot
20th place = $480/182 throws = $2.64 per shot
27th place = $370/185 throws = $2.00 per shot

Place in the top 27 and you are still making more than $2 per shot. With a total purse of nearly $50,000 for 177 players, you can't afford NOT to come to the Vibram Open next year!

Especially when they can do it with a much lower entry fee! Also if you ask me this event is MUCH easier to cash at than worlds so your right I won't be missing this one.

I would have gone this year had it not been so close to Worlds but luckily it worked out and I still had a good time this weekend.

Not really sure on the hole by hole scores on the final four but I do know that Jeremey deuced 17!!! He had a huge drive that got a little lucky cutting thru the woods to land halfway up the path, impressive, then an awesome putt from a good 50 feet out!

Nikko missed a relatively short come back putt and took a 4 on 17. He knew that Paul was close and did manage to hold him off by one stroke for second.

Barry was just consistent thruout as you would expect.

Jeremy didn't Deuce 17, The Mad Bomber, Henry Childres deuced it. Followed up by the most massive drive perhaps ever thrown on hole 18 ever. Henry was in the second to last row of christmas trees, throwing an easy thumber straight at the basket. It was pretty much the perfect finish.

Did we fail?

The goal was to give away $50,000 at the Vibram Open and I just ran the books.

Vibram Open Payout
Tournament $44,419
Dubs $3,000
Pie Eating $300
Long Drive $300
Putting $300
RPM/MPH $400
Poker $680
Table Tennis $60
Candle Pin $26
10 Down Bounty $354
Total $49,839

By my count, we were $161 short of our goal. Can we count the value of the canned goods that are going to the Worcester Food Bank? That would put us over, or would that be morally bankrupt, so to speak. Or perhaps we could include the value of the KICKER ear buds from Twisted Flyer. What are KICKER ear buds worth? These things are sweet.
