Any comparisons from people who have thrown both?

Thanks.

I've thrown both and found that Champion Whippets are overstable but not nearly as much as the Z Xtreme. All Whippets I've ever thrown usually fly flat for about 100-150 feet before starting the break to the left and skipping another 20-30 feet after hitting the ground. Xtremes on the other hand pull to the left right off the hand and always skip weither you want them to or not (i use to be able to skip these thing 50-70 foot after a drive as long as there was a ton of spin). Whippets i use to get a little over 300 foot in distance without alot of effort... Xtremes I would have to crush it on a anny line to even hope to get 300. I hope this helps

would a champ whippet be a good thumber discs? The z Xtreme is the best thumber disc on the market.

Champ Whippet-x is the mother of all thumber/tommie discs!

I'll 2nd the Whippet as a great Thumber disc. I love to use thumbers and the best I've thrown are : Whippets, Banshees and Firebirds.

Whippets - Distance and high thumbers.
Banshees - Shorter more controlled Thumbers
Firebird - Somewhere in between

I know there are Discraft/Gateway alternatives and I've tried a few but I'm just not as consistent with them.

Glad to see someone else shares my disc selection. I throw primarily Forehand with some Thumbers thrown in.
I carry 2 KC Banshees, 2 Pro(candy) Firebirds, a Star Whippet & a Champ Whippet. I always like having backups in the bag. Firebirds & Banshees also double as forehand roller discs.

I have been playing for a little over a year now and have enjoyed throwing a Star Whippet X as a Thumber....

In reading through this thread, I did not realize there was a Champion Whippet X.

Can someone give me some clarification? Are all Champion Whippets an X?

As you all know, the Star ones are a bit tougher to find as there are CFR discs only....unless I'm again in the dark?

Help!

actually, the champion whippets are much tougher to find. they are no longer being produced (and haven't been for years).

yes, they're all X molds.

There was only one run of Champion Whippets. So along with being out of production in that plastic they are also really limited in numbers. On average they go for @ $30-40 online. The Star is the same mold, sans the unpolished underside the Champions possess, but they do beat in faster.

Is this the new BDGA thread??

I love Whippets as well. Got my first ace with one a couple weeks ago. Anyway, I just got a new Star Whippet and from my first impression, it is awesome. Thrown flat, it will hold a line for 275 before a HARD fade left, then skip finish. Thrown with a bit of hyzer, it will go left the whole way, then skip big at the end.

I use Whippets for short hard hyzer approaches, ship shots, headwind approaches, < 250 ft. sidearms, and of course overhands. (I have taken out my KC Banshee since adding the Whippet).

BTW....KC Pro Whippets are soon to be extinct.

Wow you got a deal. Either that or I got jipped 3 times.

The reason I asked the question is I have been using a Whippet X for a while, but I still turn it over sometimes for forehand shots, so I bought a Z Xtreme. If the Xtreme is truly more overstable (and roughly the same other flight characteristics), then it may replace the Whippet (and I have to change my screen name :()

I had a champ whippet and it was great for thumbers but I didn't like throwing it backhand. I like the feel and flight of the Z Xtreme much better but I throw a lot more Discraft than I do Innova so I might be a little biased :)

I haven't really found the need to carry a disc as overstable as the Xtreme unless there is a huge wind storm. I carry some of the old Z preds (before the new logo) that are plenty stable enough :)

If your "flipping" a Whippet your probably putting too much arm speed into it. You'll probably run into the same problem with an Xtreme.

It is definitely a technique issue. I basically only throw forehands for hyzers. Every once in a while I will hold on to it a split second too long which turns my wrist slightly resulting in a flight that is S-shaped rather than hyzer. I believe a more overstable disc will reduce this, but definitely not eliminate it. Obviously, I need to get a more consistent release as well.

It is OOP, but the mold was dusted off and used to produce "a substantial amount" for the MSDGC. I think Marshall Street still has them available.

Poor Boy discs had a large amount of them as well at a tournament in late October that I went to. They had at least 15 of them in their stock.

So then the next question is ...
Are they as overstable as the First Runs...
Any Difference at all ???
The Z Extreme has a very predictable and most overstable disc for me.
Never tried it as a thumber.
Still have 3 1st Runs in Stock.

No way. No how. Never.

The Z Extreme is the most overstable disc ever produced PERIOD. You could run it over with a dump truck and throw it into a tree 1000 times from 3 feet and it would still be overstable.

I've never thrown anything but the 1sts so i'm not qualified to answer. Luckily i have enough 1sts to not worry about it. However, i REALLY doubt that there would be much of a flight difference in 1sts and laters. I mean, even if the laters were a little less stable, they'd still be waaaaaaaaaaaay over stable.

Thanks for the heads up Dodge! At that price i will be purchasing several.

Any comments on the Champion Viper ???
1 Run as CFR's about 5 years ago.
They have a much wider nose !
They are slower !
I don't think they turn quite as hard as a Z Extreme though.
Definitely more overstable that the champ whippet X.

i have one of those champion vipers from 2004 oklahoma open tourny. it is definately along the same performance as the zxtreme that i have .
there flight patterns are nearly identical when thrown into a headwind with 2 finger sidearm deliveries, neither one will go farther than the other.
the viper appears to settle better after contact with the ground,i was throwing test on an asphault parking lot at about 200 ft target.

depends on the run...i have a few that are flat, a few that have a little dome and some really stiff ones that are extremely domey...this doesn't affect the stability they all go left

not the stability that i'm worried about. i want to try them for thumbers and i can throw thumbers really smooth and more accurate with a flatter disc.

Around here, (on the discraft side) the Z Xtreme and the Z Flick seem to be the disc of choice for the thumber shot.

For pure distance I personally like the z-flick the best, then a flat top firebird, then either a star whippet or xtreme... I have a xtreme in pretty good condition if anyone wants to trade or buy.

great topic., i was just thinking about this. I currently have a DX Ram which acts like a Z extreme. But as it wears i know i need a replacement. I like Whippets, but They will not replace the Ram near as good as the Z extreme will. The whippet is more of a Overstable Mid on Crack...slow and left turnin with skip..But the Z extreme you can get more distance and skip around corners. The Z extreme is a great disc to up shot with in Bad Wind. Its accurate cause it does the same thing every time. I wish and hope they will produce more....

How do the X-Xtremes compare?

Z Xtreme = the best thumber disc ever. They turn very slow which allows for maximum time in the air. They work great for shots 275' - 325'. Or just throw it side arm scobby flick style for a sweet 200' tunnel thumber.

How do the X-Xtremes compare?

Not as overstable to begin with, and after a couple of thumbers they are not very overstable at all. I'm not sure why anyone would waste their time with an overstable disc in X plastic b/c I think the discs that glide make better straight/turnover discs. Maybe if you wanted a thumber that flipped all the way over and came back left...

Kind of what I figured.

The Z-Xtreme in my bag is sick overstable...and is fun to watch someone think they can throw it very far. I use it for short flick/approach/get-out-of-trouble shots...and it is almost too predictable in its overstability. lol
