TitleDISC is pleased to announce the Holiday Break-Away!

In town for the holidays? Maybe you just need to get away from the kids and inlaws for a few hours or an entire day :D. Sandwiched right between X-Mas and New Years, The Holiday Break Away is here to help!

This tournament will use our now-famous 1-day-Sunday C-tier format. Flex-start doubles all day on Saturday the 27th and a two-round PDGA-sanctioned C-tier on Sunday the 28th. We're hoping to play the "Expanded Beltbuster" layout at Greenbelt park. This is 20-21 holes (depending on field size) that use the existing Greenbelt baskets... BACKWARDS! If we are able to close the course for this event, we will use that layout. Otherwise, we'll use the "GB Gold" layout that plays the normal direction, but skips around just a bit to incorporate some more difficult, championship-caliber shots. Either way, it won't be your usual easy greenbelt!

I am limiting the field for Sunday's event to 80 players. That's 21 holes with 4-person cards maximum and a 4-person cushion. The preference will be for some divisions to have 3-person cards in some places, so I will make good use of that cushion. We're going to start early on Sunday (9:00 tee-off) to be sure that we get both rounds in before dark. As usual, it will be pre-registration-only. We will take online registration through Saturday the 27th and in-person all day during the doubles event.

As usual, TitleDISC will be bringing a great selection of gear and discs. We still have some of the new TitleDISC Longsleeve t-shirts available, and we should have some hats, beanies, and hoodies in stock by then. Of course, plenty of awesome Innova and Millennium discs. Maybe even some Discraft :)

Registration will be up on TitleDISC.com tonight!

See you all in Carrollton!

Registrations have started coming in. I know of quite a few people who are planning to attend, and I will have signup forms with me in Tyler this weekend at the Piney Woods Pro-Am.

Still looking for sponsorships, so if you want a great opportunity to advertise while at the same time supporting the local DG scene, hit me up soon!

Update: we have permission from the City to close the course for this event. That means that we can play the BeltBuster course!

4 people already signed up. If you'd like to be a sponsor for this event, please let me know ASAP. We won't be having any custom-stamped discs, but we will be printing up sponsor tee-signs. Sponsors will be taken care of, as always :)

The ADGA just let me know that they're in for sponsorship - who's next?

5 players signed up now and at least a dozen or so who told me this weekend that they intend to play. Looks like another great turnout!

We will have some more of the TitleDISC longsleeve tees, in a few new colors! I'm also hoping to have the TitleDISC headwear in stock by then... we'll see how the holidays slow things down. Either way, there will be plenty of cool gear alongside the hottest discs on the market

baldguy

7 players now.

Looks like we won't have any headwear for this event, but it will be ready in January. We will have the longleeve tees, though! I'm ordering Innova plastic tomorrow. If anyone has any special requests, please send them to me by the end of the day today.

yes, my PM box is overfull. They lowered the limit from 500 to 200 for an unknown reason. I have too many messages that I don't want to delete, so email works better for now - jdann@discgolfportal.com

Anyway, we have a few more signed up now with a couple weeks to go. Some of the local group was kind enough to give some feedback and thoughts this weekend out at Greenbelt, so I think I have all the holes laid out exactly as we will use them in the tournament. Several good par 4 holes, several good par 3 holes, and even a few deuce-or-die holes for good measure. This is a really good course!

baldguy
Dec 17 2008, 10:56 AM
15 players now, and 10 days left to sign up! The number is climbing more quickly as we get close to the date and the weatherman predicts warmer weather :)

I am still accepting teesign sponsorships, if anyone would like to get in on that action. $50 per sign is a great deal!

To clear up a few questions I have been asked recently: Doubles on Saturday will have 5 divisions. Masters, Open, Advanced, Intermediate, and Rec. It's flex start from 8:30am till 2:30pm so that everyone is finished by dark. Cost is $20/team for all am (plastic) divisions, and $30/team for all Pro (cash) divisions.

The Open, Masters, and Advanced Men divisions will play round 1 from the longs and round 2 from the shorts. All other divisions will play both rounds from the shorts. I may need to change this up a little bit based on pre-registration, to be sure that everyone gets ratings for both rounds. If we get a small turnout, Everyone will play longs then shorts!

Any spots left open that have not filled online by early Saturday morning will be available in person. On the off chance that spots are still available after doubles, I will open online registration back up for a few hours saturday evening. As of now, there will be no walk-up registration on Sunday because cards and hole assignments will already be made up and ready to go on Saturday night. This hasn't been a problem yet anyway... we've pre-filled all of our events so far this year and this one has a lower cap.

The weather, the course, and the players are all shaping up to make this a really fun event. Get registered today!

I wish I could make this one and had planned to sign up, but I took a fall yesterday and after 4 hours in the emergency room I learned there was nothing that could be done for my back except to take it easy. TitleDisc was one of the Piney Woods sponsors and with their help, and others, we managed to collect ~$13,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Please consider this tournament and goodluck to all!

This layout is subject to change, especially holes 12-15. We'll be playing them casual tomorrow to see how they flow. Enjoy!

map has been updated to more accurately reflect a couple points.

24 players now. Several more that I know are planning to sign up on Saturday. Weatherman has improved out outlook for this coming weekend. No rain, and great temperatures!

On a side note, anyone who finds my blue Mesquite Open Boss in the creek just past (normal greenbelt's) #1 basket will get a free disc of choice in trade. I lost it this past weekend and would love to have it back

Did you know that if you hover over the tee box on the map, it shows the length of the hole?

Hey Josh, is that length calculated on the map or did you measure the holes?

Dec 22 2008, 03:26 PM
Me and a couple buddies played the course yesterday in the cold using the map. Couple questions and comments for you.

1. #12 on your map, looks like the basket is on the wrong side of the creek.

2. #21 on your map, looks like this is GB#18 basket, which has been missing for about 2 months now. It was still missing yesterday.

See you at the tourney, I am going to sign up now!

baldguy
Dec 22 2008, 05:30 PM
you are very observant :)

#12 will actually be using a temporary basket, so you are correct, it is on the other side of the creek. We'll also be using a temporary basket for the one that got stolen (bastards!).

So, how did you like the layout?

Those hole lengths are calculated by google and should be accurate to within 10 feet. I'm also looking for a way to put in a list of the hole lengths somewhere other than the mouseovers... we'll see.

The layout is great! We each got one birdy, one on #2 and the other on #10. What I love about GB is the variety of baskets, tees and direction of play. It makes it easy to play through with others on the course by skipping/adding holes to complete your game. I hope when JP opens up again, we can leave a few extra baskets.

Played 19 of the holes again today +3 score, no double boges. Thats good for me! And another new birdie from way up on the hill over the creek to the GB#11 basket was AWESOME!

Are we playing the same Beltbuster layout for doubles also?

baldguy
Dec 25 2008, 10:51 AM
Yep, still planning on being there tomorrow. All are welcome to join! I'm planning on bagging some unused baskets and playing the layouts one more time to be sure there aren't any more changes necessary. I might even go ahead and bring a temp basket to play for #12.

Doubles will be the short layout for all divisions.

Tournament update: If we get 10 players in Open, I'll add $200 cash to that division! Right now I'm adding $100 to split between all pro divisions and I'm adding a DISCatcher Traveler basket to the Advanced Division, as a prize for 1st place!

Have a Merry Christmas everyone. See you this weekend :)

Here's the weather forecast:

Today: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 79. Windy, with a south wind between 20 and 25 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph.

Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly after midnight. Some of the storms could be severe. Low around 64. South wind between 15 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Saturday: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before noon. Cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly sunny, with a temperature falling to around 61 by 5pm. South wind 15 to 20 mph becoming northwest. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 34. North northwest wind between 10 and 15 mph becoming calm.

Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 64. Calm wind becoming south southwest between 5 and 10 mph.

Looks like doubles might be played on a soggy field but that's about it. The only rain we're looking at should be over with by the time we get started tomorrow. Even if some does happen in the morning, you gotta love flex-start doubles... folks can just wait till the sky clears :)

baldguy
Dec 27 2008, 12:56 AM
We're up to 56 players now!

I'm going to be out at the park by 8:30am like I said I would be, but I'd like to make sure we don't start doubles until we know that any rain has mostly stopped. The majority of the rain is supposed to happen before 8:00am. As soon as it's clear, we'll set everything up and I'll start putting out tee signs.

I increased the number of available spots for Sunday to 90, because it's looking like there will be a couple of 5-man cards. I will stick to mainly 4-man cards so that we get everything done in a timely manner. I also shortened the cutoff for online registration to noon tomorrow because I've heard from at least 10 or so people that they will be signing up tomorrow during doubles. This thing just might fill at 90 :)

See you all this weekend!

76 players as of now, including the 15 that signed up in person today. I'll extend the deadline to 10:00pm tonight, but that's the final cutoff. At that point cards will be made up so they can be ready to go in the morning.

We had 25 or so teams for doubles, and all of the cashing advanced scores were at least 4 down, even in that crazy wind! I will get doubles scores posted later tonight.

See you all in the morning!

We had a great time this weekend putting on this tournament! A huge thanks to everyone who came out and enjoyed the weather :).

Grats to JD for another runaway victory! Huff wins masters, Shabookie Wins advanced, Barry Wayne wins Av. Masters, Machen wins intermediate, Huss wins Rec, and Mattie Newton wins rec women. One ace on the day - $300 to Nathan Tisdale!

What a day! The first round, THREE (count them, 3) grandmasters players shot better than any of the open guys (or anyone else for that matter). Skeeter turned in a 57, which would have been leading open by three strokes! JD blew away the shorts with a -14 49, and Steve Parker took the cash and turned PRO!

I'll post scores on Monday... I still don't have the event password from the PDGA to use their online form. As soon as I have that, we can see some estimated ratings, too. I think JD's final round (49 on 21 holes) is going to be about 1065 or so.

Another big thanks from the TitleDISC crew to Mitch Branick and Adam Murphy who helped us tear down all the gear including teesigns and baskets. If not for those two I might still be out at the course :). I wonder if I can dial up some more 60-degree weather for next year's event... :D

scores have been uploaded, but the ratings for round 1 (and the to-par calculation) were figured incorrectly the first time... since the PDGA has implemented this wonderful caching feature, it will take about an hour for the ratings to get fixed. round 2 is good to go, though. enjoy!

baldguy
Dec 29 2008, 05:30 PM
actually, the ratings are good now. didn't take as long as I thought it would...

how 'bout those grandmasters shooting in the 1000's the first round?!? Yes, they played Masters. But, in Skeeter's own words, he's "old enough to be [my] daddy" :D. the fact that he's 6'5" and baldheaded might lend some credence to that idea...

once again - great times! Thanks to everyone who came out. We can't wait to do it again!
