Any word on the course layout? I heard there may be some changes due to a wedding at the park on Saturday. Will all 4 rounds be played at Hampton Park?

Can't wait! Thanks Craig for the heads up!

It was a personal choice to not create a post on this board for the classic. I feel that this board is a joke and I don't want to use it anymore for official business. At the same time I am compelled to check it everyday. Terrible situation

I apologize to everyone who feels like they did not get a fair crack at registering for the tournament. It is my intention to seperate the Ams and Pros next year and play 2 courses. While this will disappoint some players it will allow for a bigger better event with a more challenging format using Trophy Lakes as the second course.

sorry you feel that way. for some of the content on this board that opinion might have some validity, however this tournament info section on the board is one of the most used & recognized mediums to relay tourney info to disc golfers nation/world wide.

its unfortunate your personal feelings kept some in the dark about this great tournament. maybe next year.

good luck to all competitors on one of my (and im sure a lot of others) favorite courses.

This is 100% correct. Jonas i have played multiple Charleston classics and traveled over 3 hours to do so. the temp course is one of my favorite courses out there. there was no malice in my post what so ever just disappointment in my lack of preperation. see you next year!

Jonas is not unique in this regard....many TDs do not post on the discussion board, and either the events don't show up at all, or the posts are started by non-TDs (frequently myself).

I'm one of those missing it this year, but no complaints here. I was surprised to find it filled so quickly.

I figured this would lead to it being a crosstown in the future. Which is the right thing to do, of course. But it's a little disappointing, in that Hampton Park is such a special course and you can't play it other than at tournament time, so I'd prefer to get as many rounds there as possible. On the other hand, if it must be done, Trophy Lakes is an excellent 2nd course.

Hampton is an amazing slice of property and the course design that Harold started is awesome. We play local monthlies on it 2-3 times a year. The course should be up Thursday afternoon, I hope. Come and play it! Hang with your friends in Charleston. Play it after official rounds are over. Play Trophy Lakes during our official rounds. We have fixed that course up so much over the last year you may not recognize most of it. Come play West Ashley, our newest 18 hole course (Tidal Creek). It is a tight wooded layout that has some choice holes, wildlife and scenery.

I would rather play 4 rounds at Hampton myself, but the calling for this event speaks for itself and we need to let more play it, even if it means only 2 official rounds. The official rounds are the shortest and most frustrating part of it for most of us anyway. Play disc golf!

David i would have to dissagree with you. i think many TD's post here and promote thier event here. i know we have and the azalea disc golf tournament is a lot like Charleston and earlwood with respect to it filling quickly. i use this board to it's fullest extent to promote my tournament and get information out to the public to keep them informed. I also find it strange the way you guys are refering to the Chalreston classic having to go to a cross town. it has only been 4 rounds at hampton for the last 2 years. My first Charleston event was a cross town using trophey lakes and i thought many before where the same way.

Dave---

Personally, I use the discussion board to promote my events as much as I can (Stoney Hill Challenge, March Madness, plus occasional non-sanctioned events).

But I'm playing the Upstate Classic in 26 hours, and there's still no thread for it. If the past is any indication, it will be full or close to it.

I post to the discussion board for Earlewood Classic & S.C. Championships, of which I'm a minor part of the club running them, and I don't even play the latter. The TD for these doesn't post on discussion board. At least I can pass along the information I have, which is mostly accurate.

I sometimes start threads for Chapin's Crooked Creek Classic and S.C. Disc Golf Championships. The TD doesn't post for these, either. I can't add much, other than general questions for those who've never played Crooked Creek.

I prefer TDs to post, so general questions can be answered to a wider audience....but Jonas is far from unique in preferring not to.

As for the "crosstown".....Charleston Classic was originally Hampton only---then Hampton/Trophy Lakes for a while---then Hampton only a couple of years---and looks like will be Hampton/Trophy Lakes again. As a "crosstown" it's a great event; as "Hampton only" it's even greater. But if this many people want to play, going back to crosstown makes sense. Though it is a lot of extra work for the locals.

i haven't read all the posts but want to chyme in and say that I got an email about the flyer as soon as it went up (because I joined the charleston club out of support earlier this year)... I registered shortly after and posted a thread about it on the charlotte discussion board and was going to create a thread here but I think this was during the time when the board was up/down on and off and I couldn't at the time.

Also by the time I registered it was already getting pretty full and even people on the Charlotte board that saw my posts didnt get in and are on the waiting list. by the time this board was up and running smoothly the event was full so I never bothered to create a thread but have come back time to time to see if anyone else had.

I was hoping by at least getting it on the charlotte board that people might see it there since we saw a lot of extra traffic while the pdga site had issues... especially from the guys that are saying they missed out. Sucks that a lot of the people that missed out are guys I would love to play a round with too.

Order of events...
-Tradd made the flyer @ 4p on 10/10
-Jonas sent email to Charleston club ~5:30p on 10/10 and I posted on Charlotte board soon after
-over 1/3rd full by 10/13
-filled by 10/15

again... i haven't read further than the first couple posts so maybe some of this was said already. If i repeated anything sorry.

and if you havent done so yet... get on the wait list... i think its a long list but you never know... lots of sally's might pull out if the weather is less than perfect that weekend. (i actually might have to pull out because of work :( so there's 1 spot ;)

also... plan on playing the next weekend instead now and patron a great event (that i've still never had a chance to attend) @ TUPELO!!!

Unofficially.....
Mel Shuman shot 40-40-41-46 to win.
Mike Jo shot a 37 (!) in the final round to pull within 1.
I think Matt Dollar and Brad Hammock finished 3rd & 4th, or 4th & 5th; can't remember who the 5th person in the top 5 was.

To drift back a little, Upstate filled with no Discussion Board notices at all. Charleston, too. Apparently a lot of disc golfers did get the message. I suspect that most disc golfers, at least in South Carolina, rarely if ever visit this board.

David,
good for you guys. my tournament will fill a month before the tournament if not sooner. but what i will still do is put up a thread so if anyone out side of your little area would like to attend they will know about it. i give players form all over the region oppertunity by letting them know, not just locally. by the way at my tournament it is impossible to shoot anyhting in the 40's and only one person (brian schwebberger) has shot 4 rounds in the 50's (upper 50's) in the 8 years it has been held.

From Peckham on the Charlotte discussion board..

Mel Shuman wins -48
Johansen shoots -17 last round to lose by one stroke (closed the gap by 11 strokes last round) -47
Orrick -44
Dollar
Hammock

I got last cash at -30

Sarah Stanhope wins Open Women (dominating... ok, she was the only one)

Hey, I'm with you. For my own tournaments, I use the discussion board....and e-mail clubs and anyone else I can find within 100 miles or so....to get the word out.

But I'm reluctant to criticize TDs who are doing the heavy lifting so I can play. Especially the one who's setting up a temporary course---a big undertaking---and offering to run a tournament on 2 courses, 1 of which will have to be set up and taken down, next year.

Also, I'm just pointing out that the assertion that almost all TDs post to the discussion board is not supported by the facts. I'd prefer that they do, but they don't. In addition to those I cited before, Augusta holds many events with nary a mention on the discussion board.

Nor is the assertion that this should be a pimary means of communication sustainable. It seems most disc golfers, at least around here, rarely if ever visit this board.

And one or two posts on this thread rather prove Jonas's point. No wonder he's not a fan.

As for Upstate, Timmons Park is what it is---a very short, but fun, course. At my Stoney Hill Challenge, no one will shoot in the 40s, either. Nor at March Madness, I guess, since it's match play.

bgwvdave

First of all David i don't fill that my 7 word post was much of a criticisim and i made that very clear in the post following Jonas comment about said post. secondly i made no assertion that almost all TD's use this forum. i said it was my belief that many do. lookin at the number of threads in here i will stand by that opinion.
wether jonas is a fan or not he has his right to his opinion. but if you take the opinions here at face value some stand up people (i am not including myself in this list) have voiced there sorrow of not knowing about this great event extremely professionally. this is getting a little silly!

Regarding the Gazebo, there are a number of ghosts of former holes at Hampton Park, as the layout gets tweaked a little every year. There has been the straight-on shot with O.B. all around and, usually, wind.....and a big anhyzer shot (RHBH) out of the gazebo.

Regarding Trophy Lakes in December, promises to be a little cooler than the June tournament, with less chance of Armageddon-class thunderstorms. Also, going crosstown next year should mean no more fivesomes, always a benefit.

Interesting to see that after all the turmoil, everyone who wanted to get it in and showed up, did, and apparently there was room for a few more of us.

Dec 10 2008, 01:35 PM
We had 2 extra spots that we couldn't fill because it was just too late for the wait list peeps to make/change their plans. No wait list next year is a good thing.

The gazebo hole is pretty sweet. We will probably have a couple tweaks next year also, hopefully they will go over well. We will test them out at our January monthly at Hampton Park (date TBD)
We have had 19 holes (last year), I am not sure about 20. My first classic was in 2004 and this was played on 2 courses with only 18 holes each. 2005 was 2 courses also. I think 06 was 2 courses and the last 2 years have been Hampton only. So we'll see how it goes.

I noticed a few small cahnges this year. Tee on #10 moved up. Liked it...brought OB in play for the big arm. Seems the tee on #6 was moved up and to the right. I think. Liked this also... created a sweet little tunnel shot.

For what it is worth, I love TL, and if the CDGC and Trevor continue to make more improvements, we are all in for a treat.
What are the changes being considered?

Hope to see the whole gang from Charelston in Savannah. Also we would like to see the entire Sauls clan as well! Flyer posted at savannahdiscgolf.com, and on line reg should be up at ZoneDriven soon!
