Come one, come all...registration for The 2009 Memorial presented by Discraft is now open!

As usual we are expecting this event to fill a couple of months early so get in soon. We are again going Thursday through Saturday after a great response in March. Also, with the amazing player packages http://www.spinnersdiscgolf.com/i/Pics/tn_1_Package_Bag.JPG and awesome trophies http://www.spinnersdiscgolf.com/i/Pics/tn_P3080130.JPG we'll be doing the same thing for the Am's this year!

For the National Tour Professionals, you can enter here (http://www.pdgasignup.com/Qstore/Qstore.cgi?CMD=011&PROD=1225443791).

For the A-Tier Amateurs, you can enter here (http://www.pdgasignup.com/Qstore/Qstore.cgi?CMD=011&PROD=1225444506).

Lodging information will be posted shortly but you can always contact our friends at Sun King Travel (http://www.sunkingtravel.com/) to get some great deals.

Once again you will need to be a 2009 current PDGA member to play this event and if you haven't renewed by 1/15/09 then you could be moved to the waiting list.

Feel free to contact me with any questions at spinnersdiscgolf@yahoo.com.

Keith,

The 2009 Memorial has opened registration but the PDGA has not yet posted the 2009 NT Sanctioning Agreement, so the membership does not know what standards apply to this event. Here are the most important questions:

1) The most recent version of the 2009 NT Agreement (posted in August and subsequently withdrawn) decreed that NT's would be Open-only, but your signup page also offers age-protected divisions. Is that a mistake, or has the PDGA changed its mind?

2) The 2008 NT Agreement mandated that the hosting club add at least $4000 to the total purse. What is the figure for 2009?

3) The 2008 Agreement funneled added cash preferentially toward Open divisions according to the "triple-share" formula. If other divisions are offered in 2009, is that formula still "triple-share to Open", or has it been changed?

4) The 2008 Memorial capped some divisions. For example, MPS was initially capped at four. What will be your cap policy for 2009?

I believe the Board voted to use the 2008 agreement as the template for 2009 unless they made some changes since the Summit.

Thanks, Chuck. That helps a lot.

If so, it answers all my questions except the last. As I recall, the 2008 NT Agreement let the clubs decide about registration caps. Keith, what will be the Memorial's policy on caps?

I know you mean Discraft Keith (now Spinners Keith :D), but after seeing the proposed 2009 NT agreement for myself, and saying there's no way most TD's would go along with what was being asked, (OPEN men and women only - everyone else in a conjunctive A-Tier, upping the REQUIRED added to $8000, along with other additions) it seems like no one else liked it either and they went back to 2008 standards.

On the home page for the Memorial there is this that may help get you an answer faster: <font color="blue">
You can also send an email to the 2009 Memorial Staff at info@2009memorial.com.

Hello Peter,

While there are technically no caps per division we do need to keep it even. If there's four then that's one group, next would be six to keep it to two groups of three and so on. As the event gets closer to filling and there is only four people signed up in a division then usually we decide if we think two more will sign up or if we should allocate those for a different division.

And as Keith mentioned, please use info@2009memorial.com for questions, thanks.

Any idea when a registration list will be available? I want to make sure my arm (which I broke in october) is on track to be near full strength when I play. I intend to sign up, but would prefer to send my entry in after I have some money from returning to work and after my rehab has progressed a little.

If you put four to a room that is only $37 bucks a night. Plus, this is a decent rate for Scottsdale during the peak snowbird season. A quick search on Orbitz shows most rooms in the Scottsdale area (that will sleep 4) are over $120.00 a night.

Personally, I think it is worth a few extra dollars to have a room overlooking the Vista course. You can walk to the first tee (and Duke's). Plus it is easier to hitch a ride to the Fountain course with other players so you can save extra money by not renting a car.

the rooms at the 3 palms are kinda smallish too, but very nice. But being ON the course just cannot be beat. you have to drive only to the other course, and you can carpool fairly easy for that. Grocery store and a walgreens? are &lt;1 block away, dukes(where everyone hangs out all week) is a 2 min walk. there are other restaurants nearby too.

We are adding 1 hole to the south side of the course using part of the 1000 ft hole from 2 years ago. we are going back to having 18 be the hole after the dam hole heading north. This will allow us to combine 2 of the par 3 holes on the west stretch, similar to 2 years ago.
Everything else will be essentially the same as last year.

Barley or I will post maps when they are done.

e-mail from Keith to all non current players:

You must be current by 2/2/09 or your spot may be given to someone on the wait list who is current. You can renew easily online at www.pdgastore.com. (http://www.pdgastore.com.) Once you have done so, please e-mail us the confirmation e-mail you receive and we will make sure to secure your spot. The PDGA website will not show you as current until Weds. the 4th but by sending your confirmation e-mail you will be fine.

By the way if you renew on 2/2 (disc golfers are notorious to wait until the last minute) you will not show current until 2/10. This was info from Addie today, I spoke to her on the phone today. SO send your conformation e-mails as soon as you get them to:

Keith,

I would like to request an American Sign Language interpreter for the award banquet since there will be 5 Deaf players to play the Memorial tournament. It would be so much fun to chat with hearing players while having an ASL interpreter around us. Please let me know if you can provide an interpreter for us. If you cannot, then I can ask PDGA to send one.

Thanks!

Looking forward to throw disc there!!

Hey Tan, are there any signs us hearing golfers could learn to help in order to have a more enjoyable and/or easier round communication wise? My sign language skills are limited to about 15 signs mostly used with infants (hungry, more, milk, etc.). I know I would appreciate a heads up as to which signs you think would be useful for me to know on the course. I think I could probably pick up 10-20 between now and tournament time.

Hey Rory,

Yes, it is easy and fun to learn several signs that related to the courses. If one of us happen be in your card, we will teach you how to sign, "birdie, par, bogey, OB, in water, and etc" unless you are seriously focus in the game. Frankly, this year is my fourth time to play at the Memorial, I know several players do not want to talk with me or tell me whats going on during the rounds for their own reasons. It frustrated me sometimes but I tend to leave them alone and focus on myself in the game. Anyway, back to the point what I would like to request about interpeter since 2007 AM World in Wisconsin, they provided the interpreters there and I enjoyed every moment :) Hope TD Keith will provide it and if not, then I will ask PDGA or Brian Grahan to send one.

Wow! One month to go!! Imagine that Ive not thrown the disc lately... Been busy with work at Arizona School for the Deaf plus being coach with boys football and boys basketball. Cant wait to get my rhythm back asap :)

Vista del Roller - short skippy grass, wide open, lots of OB sidewalks along with creek / ponds
Fountain Hills - water, rolling hills, wide open with a few trees

Control your skips and you will be good - miss by 100 feet to the right and you'll skip ob on the left side of the fairway at Vista. If you can throw a midrange straight and 300 feet, you will DOMINATE!

Feb 13 2009, 11:54 PM
I suggest bringing some backup disc's. Fountain Hills seems to suck them into the lake last time I played there. I have had them skip 75' or catch a edge and just roll into the water.
Placed your throws well and you will be ok on Vista.

milldog
Feb 14 2009, 02:22 PM
Just played Vista, 2/13, the skip will be a factor. I wouldn't worry about running out of plastic, Spinners has inventory of just about everything. If you offer Dann-o the right amount, I know he has boxes of vintage and very rare stuff if you catch him in the right mood.

Everyone is invited to the first installment of the National Tour Clinic Series on Tuesday, March 3rd at 4:00. The FREE disc golf clinic will be at the newly installed Los Olivos course just minutes from Spinners, Dukes and Vista.

The clinic will be two hours and feature:
--World Champion, Dave Felderg on Mental Approach to tournament play

--World Putting Champion, Jay Reading on Consistent Putting
--The Technician, Joe Mela on Trick Shots and Saving Strokes

We are here performing for you all and the local disc golf scene as a way of saying thanks for supporting disc golf so help spread the word. A big thanks to Zach Walker of 4 Handz and Dan, Sue and Keith of Spinners for helping make this great addition to the event happen.

Vista will be open with the Memorial layout, baskets should be in this weekend! I would suggest playing Moeur (Papago) Park, fun 18 hole course or Los Olivos, where the NT Clinic will be. It's a fun 9 hole course that plays through olive trees.

Mapquest from the hotel you are staying at to Fountain Hills, and it puts you right at the fountain(which is where the course is)

It is about a 20-30 minute drive depending on lights, form one course to the other.

We can't wait to again host the first NT Clinic of the season!

There is an easy way to Los Olivos from Spinners, I just take McDowell west to Scottsdale road and turn right heading north. You take that to Indian School and turn left, that goes right down to 28th street and you turn right and the park is right there. It usually takes about 15 minutes to get there from here.

Negative ratings are theoretically possible. If someone shoots more than 150 on an 18-hole course with an SSA of 50, their round rating would be negative. I think a round rating of around 100 is the lowest we've seen thrown by a young junior player.

ninafofitre

Chuck can you do me an experiment for me?

Do the ratings per each division without scores from the other divisions as a variable. The Memorial's ratings are always inflated for the men cuz they can crush it over the water. The women &amp; GM play a course that is &gt;800 feet longer because they can't throw it over the water on many holes. It just doesn't seem right to hold a Women &amp; GM scores as the same as mens at those courses.

It's just an experiment, but my guessis the Mens ratings would be lower and the Women and GM would be significantly higher.

Come on Chuck, humor me :D

We've done it before and there wasn't much difference in comparison to the difference that might occur from wind from morning compared to afternoon. Here's what we've got for Round 1 comparing the average rating for the division with their average round rating. Your theory holds true for Round 1 assuming wind was constant over the day. But it looks like the Masters Women were able to "crush" those water holes...

MPO 978 982
FPO 900 879
FPM 866 875
MPM 965 961
MPG 951 935
MPS 909 894

Ironically, the popular theory out there is that you want to play in events with high rated players because you'll get better ratings. These results would tend to discredit that theory.

ninafofitre
Mar 06 2009, 09:47 AM
Traditionally the top players shoot about 30-40 pts higher than their rating every year at the Memorial...The same guys don't shoot 30-40 pts higher every year at other NT's. Of all the number crunching you do, you got to see that there a drastic bias in ratings at the Memorial every year. With as high total players count, if you just determine the MPO &amp; MPM ratings as group A, FPO, MGM, FPM ratings as group B then the ratings would be a little more accurate. Hey The Memorial is an awesome event, it's the best NT every year, it's kind of like a mini Major. It's our Daytona 500, the best one is first. If you want to give a little 10% bonus for the guys that's cool but the women are getting hosed

LETS GO DUDE! Devan the DUDE tied for 3rd, the young Lefty could make some noise this weekend. ;)

cgkdisc
Mar 06 2009, 11:17 AM
I've done some checking again and your claim doesn't hold up. Fountain has more treacherous water carries than Vista and the Women's ratings average no worse relative to Open. The Advanced Women are even better than the Advanced Men at Fountain in 2008.

keithjohnson
Mar 06 2009, 11:41 AM
It's probably EXACTLY for the reason Kevin described that the ratings are accurate. Because the women AREN'T trying to clear the water, they are scoring mor pars, wheras the lower rated men are getting lots of Extra strokes by going O.B.(I can personally attest to this, at the Memorial and Vegas) the better rated players go OB 3-4 times in 3 rounds, I go OB 11 times in 3 rounds, we throw only about 3 THROWS different, but show 50-60 ratings point different each round.

Plus with the pros playing Vista del Roller for the first round, all you need is a 300 foot straight shot to score 14 down.

bazkitcase5

I think you do get better ratings by playing in tournaments with all highly rated players, but not because of the calculation itself, but because most players at the top level have slowed their improvement rate and are much more consistent

take for example the T-Town Winter Warm up, C tier on January 24th... I know several people in that tournament who are rated 40-50 points below their true skill level because they have only been playing a year or 2 and are improving very rapidly - we know that the ratings of rapidly improving players will lag behind a couple of updates, but what happens when you play a tournament with several of these rapidly improving players?

I'd be interested to see the ratings of those tournament results on the 24th if each division was calculated seperately

cgkdisc
Mar 06 2009, 12:12 PM
We've taken that improvement factor into account with an adjustment added to the formula a few years ago once we had enough data to determine it's effect. However, if you're betting on whether a 940 Grandmaster would win against a 940 amateur head-to-head, bet on the amateur with the possible exception if it's a really wooded course.

bazkitcase5
Mar 06 2009, 01:13 PM
I don't doubt that, but I would say the improvement factor is limited, being some players improve faster than others, especially in different areas. Here down south in the Southern Nationals, most players play a lot of tournaments in between PDGA events, so when there is a PDGA event in the area, there are a lot more players than normal who are playing at a level much better than their rating indicates. The adjustment that was made can not take into account this large # of people playing much different than their actual rating.

Playing in a bigger tournament, like a NT event will usually generate higher ratings because there are enough high rated players to negate the effect of these few low rated good players who do attend... Its not always a huge difference, but its enough to be noticeable. After all, I went to the Players Cup and played bad, yet averaged above my rating...

ninafofitre
Mar 06 2009, 01:56 PM
These two courses are perfect examples of, How do you measure a hole? There are several holes that I look at a hyzer out over the water duece, that some are looking at a dog leg around the lake par 4. On top of that how many holes are in the range of 360-450, it's perfect for the kids, I think one of the youngster funksters could still this one this year.

I love the two courses, perfect stroll through a city park with lots of nice scenery, getting the first tan of the year :Ddamnit I'm [censored] I'm not there ...wtf...next year the return to the PHX feeeeer sure. :D

cgkdisc
Mar 06 2009, 02:38 PM
Kev, I had the exact same question you have about 6 or 7 years ago regarding the water carries on the Fountain layout impacting ratings. So we did a test and compared whether the SSA produced by the propagators at different rating levels would be different. As it turned out, the SSA produced by the pro divisions averaging around 975 rating was slightly higher than the SSA produced by the amateur propagators averaging around 875. That's the opposite of what you would expect.

Our only explanation which Keith mentioned upthread is that the higher level players who can and do go for it more agressively over water take just enough extra OB penalties to offset the longer routes with fewer OBs that many of the lower level players have to or choose to take.

Hello Folks,
I'm hoping that our membership enjoyed the hard work and long hours put forth by Terry Roddy and Jason Siemer in the desert, as they shot and edited coverage from all three rounds of The Memorial.

This project is the start of what will be a dedicated effort to bring our National Tour (and other high-level events) to our membership in a timely (possibly even LIVE!) manner throughout this 2009 dg season.

Since we launched the Memorial Preview last Wednesday, our entire package of four clips has been viewed over 4100 times! That suggests that you are very interested in having more video on the site...and our PDGA Media group is dedicated to making this happen.

You can watch all the coverage from the front page video player on The PDGA's Frontpage (http://www.pdga.com/) .

Thanks for your support, and please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or comments.

cgkdisc

If someone doesn't even start, they don't count for points. If you look at the Masters, you'll see players included who DNF'd after playing at least one round. They don't get points but they do count for those above them who did earn points. Those rounds will also get rated that they completed before DNFing.
