Welcome to the fifth annual Piney Woods Pro-Am V, a benifit to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation! Our fifth year running a B Teir event, with growth each consecutive year, this year should prove no different! This is the premere Disc Golf tournament for East Texas, with two courses, each with multiple tee placements and many holes with multiple pin placements you will not grow tired of these courses.

As in years past, this tournament benefits the (JDRF) Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. We hope to raise over $11,000 again this year and would like you to assist in doing so. Each entry will include a $3 donation to the JDRF, but fear not. Ever year the payout has exceeded 150% of entry fees. If you cannot enter the tounament, but would still like to contribute you can reach me at and I can arrange for you to pick up a CFR disc with the full color logo, shown above, or you can become a tournament sponsor.

As in years past, cards will be limited to 4 players per card, with an allowed total of 144 players. I mention this because I will not over fill this event. Due to divisions there may be some variance, but for the most part it will fill at 144 players. I have to do this for several reasons, the main reason being time of daylight available. We have to run the rounds quickly so that players do not have to finish in the dark.

Don't forget, this is pretty much the last event for the year to gather those much needed points to make the World's cut off and since things are tight this year, entry fees and disc prices will remain the same as last year. Start watching www.titledisc.com (http://www.titledisc.com]www.titledisc.com for the entry to open. The first entry, as in years past, will be given a CFR disc from the event. Also a CFR is always given to the player that travels the furthest. So sign up quickly on <a href=) and I will see you in December!!!

I am in need of sponsors and donations. If you are interested in sponsoring the event, please contact me and I can get you info on the different levels of sponsorship. TitleDisc (http://www.Titledisc.com) will be setting up an option to sponsor the event, so if you are interested, please go on over to the site.

I am also in need of merchandise. Each year there is a CTP given to every card with a dollar value of $25 to $35. Last year I gave away over $900 worth of CTP items. Quite a bit of that comes from the Rose City Disc Club, but a lot of it also comes from donations. So dig deep and pull out some of that plastic or maybe a teeshirt that you never wore and donate to the PWO V.

Just a reminder, www.titledisc.com (http://www.titledisc.com) will have the Piney Woods Pro-Am up for registeration within days. The first person to register will receive an Incolor CFR disc, regardless of division, so keep checking TitleDisc. Also, as in previous years, pre-registered open players will recieve a full color mini. You can either ask for a registeration form and we can handle it by mail or you can go online.

Early in the year the Piney Woods was shown on line as being December 13-14. This had to be changed due to conflict. If you have the Flying Disc magazine or the final issue of Disc Golf World it is wrong in both publicans. Please note the date of December 6-7. See everyone in 6 weeks!

You are indeed the first!

I will now take the next 50 and will select a player at random to receive one of the hot stamped discs. I have asked Josh to add a field for sponsorship. Since you are already registered, send me your e-mail address to and I will send you a sponsorship form. Can I also send you a tournament circular to post in Nac? Thanks for entering.

In years past I have always had someone donating money specifically to the Open Women's division and I suspect that will be true again this year. However, this is the first year I have had someone donate specifically to an am division. This year I have over $200 of added merchandise being thrown in specifically for the advanced master's division!! If you are an advanced master, you want to make this event. With the additional $200 plus the percent payout will be increased so that there is a deeper payout for that division.

Early registeration can be done at TitleDisc (http://www.titledisc.com/eventDisplay.php?eventid=371) and please help out by doing so early.

I have the first of the full color discs in and do they stand out! If you cannot play, but are still interested in sponsoring the event, please e-mail me at and I get one of these discs in your hands.

Thanks and in five weeks we will be playing!!

Friday sign ups from 1:00 PM until 7:00 PM and bring your own doubles will be played at that time. I would suggest starting no later than 4:30 to ensure you finish in daylight.

I am working on hotel deals right now. I will get back to you.

Signups are now on www.titledisc.com (http://www.titledisc.com) Please assist me by pre-registering. This makes the tournament run so much easier which benefits you and me. More news coming!!

Less than 4 and a half weeks and with www.titledisc.com (http://www.titledisc.com) registeration and local regs I only have 127 slots left open, enter soon so that you don't miss this event!

As in years past I will be pulling a large crowd from out of state. I have even had players come from British Columbia and Australia. That would make this a world event, right? The player that travels the furthest to make this event will be receiving a CFR disc to remember the tournament with. Visiting East Texas from Maine? Traveling from Japan and wanting to try your 150 class discs in East Texas? Don't be left out, enter today!

We are now down to less than 4 weeks away. I have a gut feeling this is going to fill this year. Please pre-register if you are traveling to assure your place in the tournament. As I have stated this event is a benefit to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and you can help to make this a success. I am looking for sponsors and if you are interested your sponsorship will help quite a bit. You can help by either sponsoring the tournament directly with cash, merchandise or by donating directly to the JDRF in the tournaments name.

I need to know by days end November 11 if you wish to have your name on the back of the tee shirts. If you don't care, you certainly may donate at the event, but I would like to see you recognized by adding you to the tees. If you are strapped for cash then donate discs. I do not resell the discs or use them for pay out, they will either go into a raffle to raise money for the benefit or will be handed out as CTP prizes. Last year I handed out over $750 in CTP's and all that came from sponsors, Innova Discs, Discraft, Millennium, Gateway, Sistem Sue, Racket and Job, and various individuals. Thanks for considering this event! Contact me at

If you are interested in sponsoring, please contact me today. This is the last day I can get your name on the back of the tee shirts. I would like to do that if you are a sponsor. If you cannot make the event and would still like to help, but you are unsure how, consider going over to www.titledisc.com (http://www.titledisc.com) and purchase a CFR disc. This year they include the color logo and I have several options. I also have Discraft buzzes and surges, but you will need to contact me to get one of those. If you buy the CFR disc on line, please leave your mailing address so that I can get the discs to you.

Typical east Texas is short pants and long sleeve tees the first weekends in December. I know of several Oklahoma players coming down, it would be good to see a few more. Drag one or two if you can.

For those of you keeping track and new info:

I looks like I have over $1000 that will be added to the Pro divisions. I am pretty sure we will top this number, but until I have all cash in hand I cannot give the total cash added.

All pre-registered pro players will recieve a full color mini for the event. You can either register at www.titledisc.com (http://www.titledisc.com) or email me at and I will send an entry form and you can mail a check.

$200 worth of merchandise has been added to the advanced masters division. It is not often you see this much merchandise added, if you are an advanced masters player, don't wait, register now!

All am's will be receive a long sleeve tee, as has been my practice for the last couple of years. The longest traveled player will be getting a CFR and as of right now it is a player from Nevada. I also promised a random draw amoung the next 50 to pre-register. If you want in on that you should consider registering by this weekend at the current rate.

It also looks like we will exceed 150% payout, including CTP's again this year.

See everyone in 3 /12 weeks!

Is there any camping allowed anywhere near the course? If not, any special hotel deals?

I'm trying to make this event, but got no other takers from Texarkana to split the travel/hotel cost...just looking for any way I can stretch my dollahs :D

Looking forward to the event! I've heard only good things and from what I can remember, the courses were very fun!

Ladies and gentlemen,

If you wish to camp the best place is at Tyler State Park see http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/tyler/ for info. It is a great park. Maps of the park can be found at http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/pwdpubs/media/park_maps/pwd_mp_p4508_039d.pdf Costs are as follows:

Camping:
Maximum 8 people per campsite unless otherwise noted. Applicable daily entrance fees are charged in addition to the campsite or facility fee.

37 - Tent campsites with water:
$12 per night

20 - Campsites with electric and water hook-ups:
$16 per night (Cedar Point Area)

57 - Campsites with sewer, electric and water hook-ups:
$18 per night (Big Pine - RV only - no tents)
$20 per night for Premium Multi-use (tents allowed) in the Lake View Area

35 - Screened shelters - 6 of these sites are adjacent to the Group Dining Hall

For those of you wishing to stay in a hotel, I have asked around and the best rates offered are not any better than you can get from Expedia, with the exception of the following:

America's Best Value Inn (formerly Day's Inn)
(903)877-9227 speak with Patel and tell him you need the Frisbee tournament discount rate which is:

Single: $45.00
Two bed:$60.00
King $55.00

I have not seen this hotel, however a couple of players stayed at it last year and told me it is a good hotel. It use to be a Days Inn. The address is 12732, Hwy. 155 North & I-20, Tyler. It is about 20 miles from the course just off of I-20 and I would guess driving time will be 25 minutes to the park. Web site http://www.americasbestvalueinn.com/bestv.cfm?idp=1449

Once again, I have never been to this hotel, but they do serve a continental breakfast and I have been told their rooms are nice. As for hotels closer to the park, there are quite a few, but I could not broker a better discount rate. Driving time for the majority of in town hotels will be between 10 to 15 minutes with maybe two exceptions.

This year it will be a little different than in the past. On Saturday all pins will be in the long position and the Int/Rec/Jr divisions will be all short tees, all long pins. Open/Adv will play all long tees/long pins. Sunday all pins will be moved to short positions and all divisions will play short tees/short pins. I do this on Sunday so that everyone can get out by 4:00 PM. As for new holes, while we are developing a new course, have the money and baskets are to be bought soon, there is no way we can make the tournament. Next year, assuming of course I continue to be foolish enough to run this event, there will be three courses and we will possibly move to an A/B tier, with A for Open and Adv and B for Int/Rec/Jr. The only holes in question are 3-15 alternate on the red course.

I was wondering if someone would ask that. Of the first fifty preregistered players a CFR is gong to be randomly handed out to one lucky individual. For Channon and any other pre-registered players, if I do the register now for lurkers and you are pre-registered just post on this thread, your name will be thrown into the basket again for additional chances at that CRF. I am thinking about throwing another goodie or two in as well, but only time will tell.

www.DiscGolfBuzz.com (http://www.DiscGolfBuzz.com) has approached me to allow them to bring a petition to the event to add Disc Golf as an exibition sport to the Olympics! If anyone wants to see this sport take off, this is a great time to get involved. You do not have to be coming to the tournament to sign the petition, you can do it online as per instructions at www.DiscGolfBuzz.com (http://www.DiscGolfBuzz.com) Please go over and sign up today. We are now just over 2 and a half weeks from kicking off and TitleDisc (http://www.titledisc.com/eventDisplay.php?eventid=371) has offered a random give away. From now until Friday at midnight, a TitleDisc (http://www.titledisc.com/eventDisplay.php?eventid=371) tee shirt will be given to one random entry who signs up before Friday at midnight. Just to sweeten the deal, a Piney Woods Tee OR full color mini, your pick, will be given to another random entry of all the pre-registered entries, so pre-registered players are included in the random Piney Woods Tee give away as well. As I did last time, if you post or e-mail me that you saw this, I will throw your name in the bucket for a second chance at that CFR disc (and for one, a third chance), but I am very close to the 50 pre-registered players so that may be closing soon. This offer for the Tees ends at midnight Friday so, for you lurkers, it is time to sign up!

Tournament Played: 2007

Pro: Well organized and on-time. Electronic spreadsheet used for scoring worked well. Scores were posted in short notice and made the transition to the next round smooth. Courses were in immaculate condition which reflected the effort of the locals in preparation.

Con: Except for a misunderstanding on tournament format for Advanced Grandmasters (where I played) there were no cons...unless you want to count those [censored] sticker-ball-things on that stuck on my towel, socks, skin and other places.

Overall: I will play this tournament every year for as long as it is conducted and I have spread the word in Shreveporthoping to bring a few more people with me this year. Great tournament put on by a great crew.

Alacrity
Nov 18 2008, 12:08 PM
Thanks Alan, and I am sorry for the format changes with the Advanced Grandmasters. As I explained in my e-mail I will not allow this to occur again this year. I thought that I had asked if it was okay, but after thinking about it I may have simply stated this was what was going to happen. I take the responsibilty for not communicating better.

By the way, I did talk to the PDGA about the situation that occurred. The PDGA was aware of the issue, I take full blame for it, since I allowed it to happen. Thank you for the feedback.

Played: All but 1 (I think I missed the 2nd one)

Pros: Organized, on-time, great courses -- prep-wise and difficulty, solid staff/local club, charity tie-in.

Cons: Four hours from Houston, I don't play well from the Red short tees. :)

Overall: The place to be in December for a Texas DG event.

Piney Woods Pro-Am III - 2006
Intermediate division

Pros: I like how Jerry does a CTP for every card during one of the rounds. Payout was handled expediently and all division winners were announced by name. He caters to both Pros and Ams.
I remember there was a Junior division card that was running late on the last round. Some people were complaining, but Jerry explained that they had just as much importance as the other cards.

Cons: Those dang monkeys on hole 10 - Blue Course. I think there are like 10,000 of them. :D

Overall: Jerry and the locals make everyone feel very welcome. The courses were in fine condition. The rounds started on time, and payout was sweet.

Note: I want to thank Lee (discboomer) for being my doubles partner back in 2006. I learned much from that round that hopefully has made me a better doubles partner.

I can do nothing about the moneys or the dreaded sticker burrs. We talk to the city often about the sticker burrs and they try to knock them back, they just come back with a vengance. Just be thankful you are playing in December instead of July.

As for the monkeys, the players are responsible for those!

I think I'm going to make the trip down to Tyler this Saturday morning to get a feel for how long the drive is and check out the courses before the tourney.

I've played both courses before, but it's been 2-3 years...so if there are any locals who want to play a couple of rounds with me I could really use a tour guide :D

Thanks!

Speaking of Barbeque, we have two players that will be providing lunch at the park for $6 a plate. $2 of that will be donated to the JDRF, so if you don't want to leave the park, we will have lunch both days.

I believe they promised brisket on Saturday and sausage on Sunday. This will include beans, etc.

I might have a few and will check to see how light they are, but the only vendor in town sells Innova and he will not sell discs for the most part during the tournament. Beyond that, I cannot say.

Hey Jerry,
I'm now up to a 50% - 50% chance of making it...
Really want to come but still need to wait for workload to lighten. (Thought I had to attend a wedding of someone I don't know but it's the following weekend - oh joy)

As far as past memories of your tournament - it's a must play if you can make it. The TD has loads of experience both as TD & as a player so knows what players want & bends over backwards to accomodate. Expect things to run on time. Scores & tee times to be posted. Awards & payout to be generous and effeciently run. And of course, this tourney also raises money for a great & needed charity.

I've played only the first in 2004. Had a super fun road trip w/Yeti & really want to return again.

For all Pro Men Sn. Grandmasters: I am adding a division, so if you are looking for an event that pays out to all Pro divisions, interested in playing with your peers and want/need points you can either contact me for a registeration form or sign up on www.titledisc.com. (http://www.titledisc.com.) Please select Pro Men Grandmaster and in the comments sections note that you want to play Sn. Grandmaster. I may also be running a Legend division! Please let me know if you are interested.

It should be up shortly, however if you want me to e-mail you a reg form, you can fill it out and mail it with a check, money order, cash etc., or pay via paypal. Please call me at (903)312-7776 or email me at and I will send a form out that day.

titledisc will be back up this afternoon. my colo had a major issue last night and it took my server down hard... but I'm working on it as we speak. Jerry - I think we should extend the window for the TitleDISC longsleeve t-shirt to Saturday night, in light of the downtime.

BTW - AByrd, I was thinking of bringing my wares with me to sell, if Jerry will have me. I'll be competing in the tournament though, so I would only be set up between and after rounds :)

Alacrity
Nov 21 2008, 04:34 PM
I was thinking about extending the tee shirt give away as well, so we will extend it until Sunday at 10:00 PM.

As for selling discs, I would prefer discs be bought from the tournament first, but if it is a disc I don't have, I think it would be fine for you to bring discs. The local Innova dealer will be doing the same thing.

baldguy
Nov 21 2008, 04:44 PM
I'm an Innova dealer and a Millennium dealer... but I don't need to hawk any wares that will get in the way. I just didn't remember tournament discs being available in past years, other than the fundraisers. Up to you, Jerry. I'll be there primarily to play, not to sell :)

Alacrity
Nov 21 2008, 06:09 PM
I have always had tournament discs for sell, I just try to cut it close so I don't have anything left. Please bring your discs over, just ask the players to look at tournament discs first and if I don't have what they are looking for I will certainly send them your way. If you can help abyrd I am sure he would appreciate it, I don't have anything that light.

Hopefully we'll have a couple of the Senior Grandmasters ( Marvin McVay and Joal McKenzie) from Shreveport with us so they can get registered.

Gary, I'll take a look at the ones you talked about....there's just something about those Orions that I like.

I thought the wind would bring it down...but it didn't. If anybody here finds it just hold on to it....I'll be there on the 5th.

It is about this time every year I mention the feeling I am experiencing, but a picture is worth a thousand words! We now have less than two weeks to go, registration is currently above what it has been at this time in past years at almost half filled. I am waiting on the PDGA to pass me info on logging on and posting regged players, as soon as I get it the players will be added.

Current forecast for December 6-7 is for highs in the mid 60's and sunny. Early December in East Texas, gotta love it!

Please consider pre-registering to assure your place in the tournament, you can either go to www.titledisc.com (http://www.titledisc.com) and register there or you can go to www.rosecitydiscclub.com (http://www.rosecitydiscclub.com), go to the tournament link and download a form, fill it out and mail it in with a check, money order or cash.

One last call to all you giving souls, I will be running a silent auction at the event and all proceeds will be going to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. If anyone has something unique to offer up, please bring it along. So far amoung the things I have include a USDGC Champion Roc, a 1986 Innova Aero from the Freestyle Players World Championship held in Ft. Colins with I believe a hot stamp of John Houk free styling, a beautifully died Dynamic Disc stamp, and a Texas 10 Crush with a Texas 10 stamp, etc. Any thing else would be much appreaciated and remember it goes to a good cause. Just a reminder, I will be closing www.titledisc.com (http://www.titledisc.com) online registeration this evening at 10PM. If you want to make sure you are in, then you should register today. Assuming there are any spots left I will be taking registeration at Lindsey Park Friday from 1 until 6 (or so) and Saturday morning from 7 until 8:30. As of today, I have about 10 spots left in each pool, give or take a few. I am off to pick up the last few promised sponsor checks and items and then to the park to do the final clean up work, see everyone in a couple of days.

You have a couple of us from Waco heading that way tomorrow morning... Looking forward to it.
Were you able to locate some maps of the courses?

Yes I am sorry, I was so busy I did not get a chance to e-mail them. I will get them out shortly. If I do not, I will be at the course, I have printed maps.

I have closed on-line registeration, I will be taking registeration at the park tomorrow, but I am very close to filling. I thought it would fill tonight and I am close. I have 3 spots left in the Open/Adv pool and 5 in the Int/Rec pools. Actually I would be full but I had several drop today because of family or health. If you don't think you can register until Saturday, you probably ought to call me by 8 PM Friday Evening to see if any opening are left.

Piney Woods Pro-Am is full. If you have not spoken with me, or pre-registered the tournament is full. If you waited to sign up, there is no room left. I have a couple of players that need to pay, but they have already made arrangements.

Thanks for considering the event and next year with the expected three courses, this should not be a problem. Later all.

Jerry - FYI - the courses aren't set up correctly in the prelim scores. ratings won't be accurate. Of course, even if you were awake right now to fix it... it would take an hour for us to be able to see it. stupid unnecessary caching. I'm going to bed.

Thanks Jerry and all Rose City Disc club members for putting on a killer tourney. I had fun all weekend and was impressed that you were able to follow through on your word that everything would be wrapped up by 4:30pm on sunday.
I'll see you guys either at a mini sometime or Ice Bowl.

So the weekend is all but over and PWO was successful in many ways, I believe everyone had a good time and we successfully raised a fair amount of money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Due to club help I actually got to play this weekend as well. I have decided all TD's should get to play their event once, just to see things from the field. Anyway, scores are posted, but it may take a while to update and I will post the amount we raised in a couple. Once again thanks to everyone that came, to the great sponsors of this event, Rose City Disc Club (and their young ones) for the help, City of Tyler for letting us have this great park to play my favorite sport in. Later.

Watching you play that last round was both fun and scary. You were just a few strokes off from setting or tieing the course record and I was sitting back hoping to see you hit it and fearing you were going to. It was a joy playing with you.

Thanks to everyone for letting me play. I do believe I could have done better, but the drama of the tournament and home life was a little wearing. For those of you that care, my son is home and has apologized for loosing his temper and the dog is hobbling along well. You guys/gals don't know how close you were to having Kyle run the tournament......

Jerry,
Thanks agian for all you do to run his tournament...there must be hundreds of hours spent organizing, chasing sponsors, working on the courses, keeping us updated online, coordinating the JDR charity donation, creating the trophies & purchasing payout product - THANK YOU!

It is great you were able to play...I have always felt a TD should be able to play if at all possible. The fact you were able to compete with all the chaos at home & also run things is a fantastic juggling act. Glad the boy is O.K. - I have been in his shoes in the past & we all must live & learn and make our own mistakes.

Also an extra thanks to the Rose City DGC...I'm sure there is several members that really stepped in to make things great for the players & easier for you.

Your Sponsor list is long but I must mention the geat donation to your charity from the Owen family. Very nice.

There is a great group of guys that play in he MPM division & it was nice to meet a few new players this past weekend...all top notch players, gentlemen with integrity, humor & skills that I'm looking forward to seeing & golfing with again.

A big shout out to David Kitner (Kinter?) for his amazing 1045 rated final round - WOW! Also props to my friend Ron Silliman who posted a couple +1000 rated rounds on his way to winning. Sweet shooting - it was fun to watch.

Super weekend & looking forward to seeing the third course next year...I'm sure it'll be awesome considering what you have already designed.

I have one more thing to give away and shall do so within the next couple of days.

Until then a little info. I have not completed the full calculations yet, nor have I picked up the last few checks, but it looks to me like we may have raised an additional $3000, above the $10,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation making our total $13,000. You guys and gals were great in assisting, both players and sponsors. The last couple of years we have managed to raise something shy of $2000 each year. I will be honest with everyone, I don't know how it was done. I don't sell or payout merchandise that is given as sponorship. I may trade some discs out so that I can vary the payout, but I give away what is given. It is given away in the Sunday morning CTP's. This year we gave away about $900 worth of merchandise Sunday morning.

And then, I also gave away another $100 practice basket to an innocent bystander, plus the Chili's coupons. Once I have completed the calcs I will post the total number, but I believe it was substanially better than the previous years. We did raise almost another $150 with the silent auction and it helped that some idiot bought a Champion Roc for $55 :) :o

I did NOT bag the am payout this year, but I believe it was as generous as in previous years. Rose city Disc Club did sponsor a portion of the tee shirts again this year, donating about $3.50 per shirt in actual money and another $1.50 in value for a total of about $500 sponsorship. If anyone feels their am payout was light, please PM me and let us discuss it.

Once again, thanks one and all!

Hey Jerry, I was looking at the Discraft site and they had me listed as takign 4th at your event and then noticed that Farnham was listed as 3rd and I was 4th and I just wanted to ask if we would be listed as tying for 3rd or not when the TD report is sent in,

Thanks
