During recent Ace Race rounds we had a question come up. Is hitting the pole below the entrapment cage considered hitting metal? I now live in the Birmingham, AL area relocated from Oklahoma. In OK, in games of 51 or Ace Races pole was NOT considered metal. But I've found in talking to folks, it seems to be a regional phenomena what hitting metal is defined as.
What say you?

I learned to play disc golf in Dallas/Fort Worth and we always played 51 as basket and higher....pole didn't count. As for the Discraft One Disc Ace Race (here in Pittsburgh, PA), we counted "metal" as hitting the target anywhere, pole included.

Basket and above generally eliminates the old "slide up and dink the lock" scenario being counted as legitimate metal.

Around here it's simply hitting the basket, even if you slide up on it and you get $1.

For those who don't count the pole, does that mean you also don't count the chains that support a hanging basket? :D

We've always paid for any metal (pole included) hit on the fly. For those close calls when you can't be positive that you didn't skip to the pole, the true sportsman will deny any payment. On the other hand, any deflections off of trees or other objects count for $$$.

Pole counts as metal, probally voting for Obama. Pole doesnt count as metal, voting for McCain. You see, people voting for McCain are limited thinkers and cant see the whole picture. Metal is metal. Let's not over think this, it's all proven chemistry. :D

No. All aces get paid! Indesputible evidence overrides lame, greedy arguments.

As was stated in the original post - there will always be variations from one place to the next. I haven't actually played in any of the ace races, so I can't speak to even what might be our "local" rules.
But as far as playing the standing 51 bet ($5 for ace, $1 for metal) I've only ever seen basket and above payed around here. Skips, deflections, whatever, all counts, so long as it's basket and above. Doesn't make it right, or better than those that count the pole, but the shots that hit basket and above are "generally" better shots, and "generally" had a better chance of going in - which in my book makes them more worthy of getting paid.

For Ace Races, we count any metal hit. However, on portable baskets used, we DO NOT count the base...everything upwards, starting with the pole. Its up to the group to decide the iffy situations...which are mainly skips up to the pole that you cant be sure of.

See..... even the game varies from place to place. I've always heard it called 51/50 - $5.00 Ace, $1.00 chains, and $0.50 for metal.
As long as you're playin', it's all good!

basket and above (except for Chucks silly example of hanging basket)... always play 51... never heard of 50 cents for hitting pole
i could understand for a discraft ace race playing any/all metal including pole or anything else only since the ace race i've been in there was only maybe 1 ace and not that many metal hits

In one of my first leagues ('98) I drove/spike-hyzered a shorter hole and bounced up hitting the bottom of the basket after hitting the pole. All 3 pro's on my card had a $1 in my hand before we progressed down the fairway.
So, (bottom of the) basket and above gets ya $1...aces get ya $5.

For that matter, Basket means you never stood a chance as well.
What is funny is it even changes from group to group. I was taught basket and above ($5/$1) and that is what I pay out and what I will accept money for. However, within certain groups they pay out "Any Metal", even the lock. I have played in some groups where "Metal" is not paid and you get $10 for an Ace.
What is even funnier is many people consider an Ace to be nothing more then luck. A few inches in any direction and you could be 50' past the basket. Why pay cash for luck.

I've wedged aces in the side of the basket and I've seen 2 other aces that way with the most famous one being hole 3 at the USDGC a few years ago, and watching the guy almost kill himself running down the hill to retrieve it before it fell out. :D
It DOES happen which is why I've only paid basket and higher, because they are the only ones that have the opportunity to be an ace, everything else is just close, but no cigar shots.

I've always done 51 as basket or above for the 1. Though after 4 metal hits and 1 ace in the last week and not seeing a penny from my cardmates, I'm about to give up on 51. Sick of paying it out to people that never pay back.

Standing bets are only good with people you confirm with. If you pay out voluntarily to people you don't have standing bets with well..............
If metal mania is a regular part of your game - get in the habit of either playing with the people who you know go for it - or ask the group before you start - KISS

Around here for 51 we play basket and above. On another note, If your shot is so far off that you are unfortunate enough to hit one of the many light poles in the park, you pay everyone on your card a quarter.

SO, If you are saying hitting metal....and you don't count the pole, would your pole be made of something other than metal?
Oh, and the McCain/Obama comment...it would come down to the political affiliation of the individual who hit the pole and the affiliation of others in your group. Because neither side has a mind of its own.

A basket doesn't always need a pole to be suspended at the right height. Would you count hitting the several chains used to support a hanging basket as "hitting metal"?

The only people that should get paid for hitting the pole are strippers and firemen... Basket and above - basically the target area.
